Improve your downpicking with these 10 Riffs! Many of you guys wrote to me what you can do to get better at downpicking, so I tried to put the "essential" tips together along with 10 Riffs (plus one) you can use to get better accuracy for your downstrokes. Hope it can help you as guitar beginners or advanced players!
This is kind of a new video type where I merged a tutorial together with a riff list. Let me know in the comments whether this is useful or not ;)
Here are ten downpicking guitar riffs for you guys! We are looking at some true classics such as Megadeth, Slipknot, Pantera, Disturbed, Rammstein and others like Sum 41, Amon Amarth and Bullet For My Valentine! I wanted the bands to be various which is why there is only one riff per band in this riff list! Also the tunings vary and yes, I played everything on that guitar. How is this possible? Check my gear ;)
Tell me what other riff lists you want to see in the comments below!

Injuries from not warming up properly or pushing yourself to much. At it's worst Carpal tunnel, Tennis Elbow and frozen shoulder. The least muscle strains and tears. I have met musicians over the years that have developed these injuries. I myself have Tennis Elbow in both arms although it's gone now it still recurs if I don't warm up. I also have a skeletal defect in my right shoulder and is further forward. this cause back and shoulder problems so correct posture is also a must. Thank you JJ for bringing this subject to light.

I like that rather than throwing people into the deep end, you picked out some riffs that are slower downpicking and amped it up from there. It’s so much more fun to be able to play along and have some intermediate goals along the way

Awesome video and a great idea too. Down picking is harsh on your body. It is so important to stop when you hurt and not try and push through. I have done this so many times and paid the price. I have suffered with arthritis from the age of 15 (juvenile arthritis) inevitably progressed and now also fibromyalgia. If any of your followers read this it is super important to listen to your body, I can push through for a few minutes and not be able to play for a week because I’ve aggravated existing shoulder or neck inflammation. Looking forward to you doing a video on sweep picking….I just cannot wrap my head around it !

This was a great idea for a video. I'd love to see more of them. A really good balance of explanation and playing, and the close-ups were very helpful. Your downpicking is so good it's unreal. Everyone would benefit from learning from you. \m/ Some excellent advice here. I do struggle with snapping the palm mute on and off at speed. Too much movement in my picking hand, I think. This will be a great list to practice with. Raise Your Horns is so fun. I have to try that one. I never thought about learning The Hell Song to practice downpicking, but it looks really helpful. Technique tutorial riff lists are a good idea! Your explanation was clear and concise and the close-ups of your downpicking at different speeds and employing different styles (i.e muted-non-muted) is really helpful! I can downpick, but when it gets to a higher speed or transitioning into an open string or an alternate picking phrase I mess up!

Hey Jassy - Thank you for the video. The tips were really helpful! One question that I have (especially now that you mentioned you use .09 or 0.10 strings): how do you get it tuned so low without getting the strings to be too floppy? I assume it is a matter of adjusting the guitar, but how do you manage to get the same guitar and strings tuned in E but also Drop C and Drop A? I have been trying to get my guitar to be tuned lower, but I think I need to go to a luthier. Thank you in advance and I hope you are doing well 🧚🏼‍♀️

if one is picking with the weak hand (lefty playing righ hand guitar - my case), do not stop when you feel pain, the pain helps to connect to your weak hand doing the picking onslaught. But make sure you do effective stretches for your wrist arm, back and shoulders which work for you when you take a 3 to 6 minute rests between sets. Or relearn guitar so you use your dominant hand for picking. What right hand people say about lefties (having advantage) playing right hand guitar is only based on their assumptions. I and many other lefties speak from experience. You can test yourself with how easily you can coordinate movement from the wrist using your weak hand. So anyone starting out being left handed, please learn left handed guitar. Otherwise prepare for fast but SHORT term fretting hand development and then you hit a wall and certainly wont be able to play fast palmuted heavy metal stuff any time soon if ever. It will take you many years of shear determination, sweat and pain and injuries to acquire the delicate united movement in your weak hand. After 25years of various aproaches and forcing myself doing everything with my right hand I decided to give downpicking a chance before shitching to left hand guitar after so much time and effort beyond imagination spent playing the wrong guitar. With downpicking I can see and measure my progress. Finaly something works for my right hand. 3 years on and I am almost where I want to be with my downpicking. Play to metronome above your tempo, aim to match the speed and only then figure out how to make the movement more efficient and clean it up of unnecessary tension later. Every set increase your metronome by 6bpm. good luck everyone

I was always wondering about the implications of being a left handed, playing a regular right hand guitar like I do. I got my 1st as a gift, regular right handed guitar, so didn't had much of a choice in the beginning. I remember having a lot of doubts, must admit if I can learn like this, which I eventually did. But I wondered quite often if it affects your style and learning. After all, it's not just the hand , it's the wiring, being a bit different for us too. I'd love to hear more about your experience, cheers

@@johndediu6892 Hi, my first guitar was my dad's acoustic. It was right handed and thought me being left handed I'd had an advantage that my dominant hand was doing the fretwork and did not pay much attention to my picking hand, I thought picking hand was such a simple thing. Yes maybe, for strumming at the camp fire... This year I have stopped learning to play left handed guitar, because my right picking hand has acquired a new level of speed and precision. Still at it after 3,5 years of downpicking hard work. However, the right (weaker) picking hand can still be a bit temperamental or fragile to execute the fast stuff, but I am getting there, improving maybe 0.1% every month. When you get to the point where the fast development halts, the progress with better is only incremental and feels as if no progress has been made, so it is important to implement a bit of "good time" into the hard work. When doing the fast stuff, the activity feels at the back of my brain, dream like state of mind, feeling high without drugs

Does the string guage really bother people in terms of of down picking ? I've always been able to use any gauge but mainly use 12.

Pretty much anything from The Ramones is great down picking practice too.

Yeah especially on bass due to the thicker strings you need like a big stubby pick to downpick using thicker bass strings like hybrid slinkys.

Great idea and great video. Great explenation at the start and no it wasn't to long :-) . I am not a guitar player so sorry i can't make any suggestestions today :-( I noticed that the camera that filmed from the top right had the focus on the headstock and not on the fingers, making it hard to see something you were playing. Keep on the great work and thank you for making videos for us

so it is not necessary to use fatter strings for lower tunings if you are not comfortable with them?
