I seem to recall that the Master as a child was the Doctor's best friend. The Master went mad in the process of becoming a Time Lord, but still has that sentiment - shared by the Doctor.

Well he even comments on regretting it at the end of the episode. Personally for me I view his actions there as the spark that eventually lead him towards TLV, so seeing it pop again here, I had a feeling it wouldn’t end well

I mean, the River in the astronaut suit was an earlier version, and she only drained her weapon pack so that she could buy the Doctor enough time to think of a solution, and he couldn’t tell River he was a Tessalecta at the lake because he knew the Silence were watching and listening. If he’d told her then Kovarian and co. would know that the assassination had failed. There are lots of other examples that would have been better.

Except remember he didn't wipe her mind really. He suppressed it with an extremely fragile cap. Any reminder would blow the lid off it and possibly her literal head. The dumbness is that the Doctor would be able to find a more permanent cure that would allow her access to at least her personal memories.
@blackleopard555

Except for two words that make wiping her mind pointless that we'd seen earlier in the series...The Chameleon Arc. A bit of Time Lord tech that can change a Time Lord into a human and suppress/restrain a Time Lord's knowledge. The Doctor only needed to do the latter for Donna to be able to stay with him. Or at least in theory... We'd have to find The Doctor in order to ask... I'm cool with that! XD

but when the watch was taken by Tim, didn't the Doctor specifically tell Tim to wait? that definitely was in the story. there was a line about that. Tim spoke to the Doctor in it. he could have told Tim to bring it back to Martha as soon as the crisis arose. it could have saved lives. also, would it not have been wiser to make sure that if ur going to change who u r and erase ur memories and change ur persona, shouldn't u make sure that u r not sending ur companion to an environment/time where she is going to be oppressed, demoralized, incapable having the resources to protect everyone in case a crisis does occur, also suffer bigotry, be mistreated... and in a time where hate crimes could easily happen and no one would raise a finger to do anything about it... and then never apologize to her at the end of of the story for putting her thru that? it just seems... heartless and like a bad idea.

@@gisela_oliveira exactly. that one concept just made it all not work. and if they came to the present, it would be easier for Martha and the Doctor to solve the problem if the family of blood did catch up to them. more modern advances and chances for self-defense. and this way, Martha wouldn't have to be subjected to a time where she easily would, could and DID suffer abuse. And then barely get appreciated for her efforts. and what's even worse is that it all could have been prevented if the doctor had just stood his ground and decided to defeat the family, as he had done with many foes before them. after all, we saw how easy it was for him to have destroyed their ship and left them stranded. that way, all those people wouldn't have died. it's one of those stories that looks great on the surface, but the second you think about it, it falls apart and u realize that u are watching the lead character make all the wrong decisions and never actually apologizing for it. i just wish they had thought of another way for the doctor to have wound up in that predicament, i.e. where he intended to send Martha to a better place where she could mount a good defense in case something happened, and his human self could help her, but the tardis was damaged when it was being chased and it wrecked its navigation. but no reason was actually given, alas!

I can actually understand the last entry. Personalities such as The Master/Missy, with their megalomania and narcissism, literally need someone to lord their achievements over. The so-called monologuing, as mentioned in both Who and The Incredibles, is merely a symptom of their psychological conditions. It's not simply an easy way for writers to get their ideas across, it is an essential component in their make-up, ie they need someone to know how clever they are, or their victories are meaningless. As such, having the Doctor, particularly one in a reduced state as we saw in Last of the Time Lords, is the only thing that, for The Master, makes the whole thing worthwhile. The fact he had achieved one of his life-long goals, domination of the Earth, was a minor detail. The only thing that held his interest was having the Doctor there to rub it in his face that he (the Doctor) had lost, and without him there, the Master would likely have grown bored and abandoned the planet shortly after conquering it.

exactly! finally someone else points this out. 11 never committed genocide there. he also told the silence he did this right after he did it, which means they could have left after their plans were foiled... so if they stayed behind to keep terrorizing humanity, technically, they put themselves in that position.
@bheast86

and he was just letting the Silence speak for themselves: The killing was what they said when it was enough to give themselves away on film (problem with that episode is the 'dwarf star alloy prison', which would have been too dense to build).

Didn't the Doctor strongly suggest that humanity would keep rewatching that video for millenia, even as they fly out into space and become various Bountiful Human Empires? Maybe it isn't genocide to the point of extinction, but it is certainly a good attempt at it.
@philadelphiawhovian5641
@philadelphiawhovian5641 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidharshman7645 but the Silence also told him to do that, in an act of intense hubris. literally, he followed their advice. since those particular Silence made it very clear that they would never stop devastating the human race, the doctor had to maintain a constant self-defense mechanism within them, making sure the Silence (or the chapter that broke away from the original priesthood) would never continue it, or reestablish it. if the Silence were to come in peace, which the original chapter did do later in series 7, the Doctor always could (And evidently did) change how things were. after all, he had done such a good job of erasing himself from history throughout 11's era, the Silence's apparent strong existence later on indicates that once they were no longer torturing the human race, there was another great shift. what i'm saying is, from ur perspective, their are too many factors that indicate that it still was a good attempt of extinction (that never actually came to be, from a factual standpoint. but still it was a good attempt at it, to you), but from the other side of the argument, there are too many factors to show that genocide not only didn't happen, but that the Doctor didn't cause that. both sides of this argument have many 'what if'/unknown factors to it. but one thing is certain: by the Silence making their own choices, they actually destroyed themselves. that's the risk u take when u seek to manipulate and destroy others. live by the sword, die by it.

One bullet point in and this already feels like it was made by somebody who didn't actually watch the episode... The Doctor had to wipe Donna's memory because her body was burning up and her brain was glitching out. She was dying in front of him and didn't have very long at all left -- he didn't have any time to try anything else or to search all of time and space for a cure, he had to do it right then and there to save her life. He had incredibly limited time to work with and it was *literally* all he could do to save her.

9th once replied to Rose's question "why don't we fly closer?", he said "I don't wanna risk the TARDIS, it's a Time Lord hi-tech", or something like that, so not summoning into a battlefield, or sticky situation, if not really really necessary. And besides Key summoning wasn't invented until much later (11th Doctor). Showing Weeping Angels move - I totally agree. That was a dumb move from Moffat, he created them and in their next episode he ruins them, great job. Rose was missing for 12 months, that's a whole year. Micky complained, that the police interrogated him, because they thought he kidnapped her. How did you miss that? It's in the episode. Also not checking the date, you know, the Doctor actually never thought he could overshoot, he thought, that he brought Rose home, there's no need to check the date, not for someone so confident as the Doctor.

I still can’t help believing that Donna might have had enough Time Lord essence in her to regenerate and thus develop a brain capable of holding the Time Lord portion of her mind. River was Time Lord enough to regenerate just being conceived in the Tardis, so Donna should be able to. But the Doctor’s actions as his own regeneration nears show that he equates regeneration with death, the death of himself, the version of the Doctor that he is. He could have helped Donna to regenerate instead, and maybe she would have done so naturally, but prevented this because he didn’t want Donna as he knew her to die, even though Donna in essence would live on.
@Croftice1
@Croftice1 3 жыл бұрын
Donna couldn't regenerate. She wasn't made Time Lord, her body was still human but with a Time Lord's mind. Like META-10 Doctor, he also was fully human, one heart and stuff, but had the original 10th's mind. The only difference between Donna and META-10 was their creation. While Donna absorbed the essence of a Time Lord, META-10 was "born" with it (or rather from it and absorbed human DNA instead), so for Donna it was unnatural, forced, while META-10 was already adapted to it.

Definitely not. If you paid attention, the Master blocked his regeneration and made him older and older and older, til the Doctor was really really old. You know, how old people tend to hunch their back, the spine can't hold that well anymore and the skin gets all bumpy and stuff. The Doctor was actually beyond a typical human old age, so his body regressed even further, till it was very small. Since he's not human, this could be (as the Master claimed) how old age would look like for a Time Lord, if they never regenerated.

Though I do agree with some of these, half of them are only "dumb decisions" because you don't like them and you "are sure there was another way". If the show says it's the only way and doesn't retcon itself to show that there was another way all that time, than it IS the only way. The Donna wipe isn't a dumb decision because they haven't retconned in another way to keep her going as a companion (at least so far). Also, a lot of these moments help establish the character (the 10th being too afraid to immediately pull the trigger (not literally) on his enemies, the 12th being too cold and willing to screw people over, river being too naive and rebellious with time and the hard things that come with it, etc.) They aren't stupid decisions unless they have no point for it happening

The Doctor has been given the choice of saving mankind or saving an innocent and rare alien life before, _The Beast Below_ being the prime example, so in _Kill the Moon_ him choosing to let humanity make the choice for once is a completely logical one. He wants humanity to make the hard decision he would usually have to make, not even for the guarantee of their survival, just better odds of it. He's cold to Clara in the episode, but that's because he's tired of making this decision.

Rose absorbed the Time Vortex from the heart of the TARDIS, but essentially it was just energy in her head, while Donna was fused with Time Lord essence from the hand, basically backed into her DNA, I think. It wasn't that easy to get it out, because Donna became METAcrisis, like the half human META-10 Doctor. The only difference between Donna and META-10 is Donna absorbed it, originally human absorbed the Time Lord DNA, it wasn't natural for her, while META-10 was created, so his human body already adapted. But they were basically the same form of creature, only Donna was forced into it by touching the jar with the hand.

I wonder if we will ever see the Master become a companion but he/she is still evil basically showing us what would have happened if the Doctor kept the Master imprisoned on the TARDIS after Series 3. Over the series, the Doctor slowly becomes more evil and eventually let's the Master go and the Doctor realises what they have done and have to stop the mad bull they've just released and it turns them good again. The best duo this can be done with would be Tennant/Simm but Jodie and Sacha would also be good as he is pure evil and she has an evil streak she keeps hiding away. It will be cool to see an evil incarnation of the Doctor especially since 13 is meant to be a goodie-goodie so it will be a brilliant contrast. Guess we'll never see it now since Series 13 is coming this year so no chance. Just hope the next duo can pull it off.

From the very beginning, it was established that the tardis has a mind of it’s own; it takes the Doctor where s/he needs to be. So in Human nature/ Family of blood, blame the tardis, not the Doctor for jamming up Martha. The ninth Doctor, having just emerged from the time war, believing he had destroyed his own ppl; was desperate to save everyone. He wanted to forgive & forget (especially after Rose brings him back to himself in Dalek). But number 10 is past all that. Too many took advantage; now he’s just pissed. You crossed him; no mercy. NO MORE. Finally to cover that episode & many others you mentioned; let’s face it, the Time Lords aren’t exactly paragons of wisdom & have shown themselves capable of making some pretty dumb decisions. So why are we holding the Doctor to vastly higher standards? As the old adage says, No one is perfect.

People complain the Doctor became too godlike but complain when he can't solve universe shattering or soul destroying problems in an afternoon. Just for reference, I love Donna-she is my favorite companion. Also, one way the metacrisis theme can be reimagined for the 60th is that Donna is complete without the Doctor and doesn't need him to make her great. I hope whatever happens to Donna, she has some agency this time and we see that she has had a fulfilling life.

But I think for most enemy's including the daleks the doctors reputation kicks him and most enemy's are scared to kill him but they should! This is why I think the BBC should scrap the children show thing, it's more of a teenage on-words show and would benefit from stronger stories. Just look At Torchwood! Sure, the Joker "tries" to kill Batman whenever they meet, but he'd clearly be *devastated* if Batman ever actually died--he really just likes toying with him and would absolutely *hate* to see his favorite hate buddy actually die for good. Same with the Master. He "hates" the Doctor (so he says), but his actions don't mirror his words.

Watch it aagin from that perspective and tell me I'm wrong. The Doctor didn't "wipe out the Silence" he just rid the Earth of them. The Silence still exist in the universe. The Master isn't actually the Doctor's worst enemy. Ultimately the Master doesn't want to kill the Doctor, he wants to prove to the Doctor that they both have the same darkness inside them. Mummy on the Orient Express was so boring (Listen was good) to me whereas I loved In the Forest of the Night and Kill the Moon wasn't too bad either. I loved him leaving Clara behind to make the decision for her planet (while he defends the Earth a lot it's not his planet so makes sense letting the 3 humans he left behind decide) The Doctor not informing River about the Teselecta is such a typical TV trope of miscommunication lol Ugh Amy trying to get with Eleven was def a dumb writing decision NOT taking the Silence out the way he did would have been dumb. One of the reasons I love The Doctor is that, despite his kindness and willingness to save everybody, give 2nd chances, etc he is willing to do what's necessary, even kill, when he has too. Hate the hero trope where the hero can never make the tough choice and can't fight back successfully bc "Omg we are the goods guys we can't kill/hurt/capture/etc" 8:55 Every main/major/recurring villain in every show ever (and a lot of times vice versa of hero never killing the villain)

Gonna update as I see them. Tl;dr. Agree: 9, 8, 4, Disagree: 10, 7, 6, 5, 3, 2, 1. Well better than most lists I suppose 10. Okay so not a dumb decision then. Let’s say there was a place they could go. Can you ensure Donna would be alive by the time they arrived, let alone explain what’s going on and get the kit to save her? And without crossing anyone’s timelines to do so, since at that point no one should ever really die in DW. 9. Completely agree. Extremely odd decision made by the Doctor here 8. Yeah Adam was a dumbass 7. IMO not a dumb decision, but a incredibly cruel one especially with no warning. He basically waters of Mars’d her, making her effect a pivotal moment in earth history, but she didn’t go into it thinking that, it was forced on her. 6. Really? I mean technically sure, you could argue sacrificing the world to save the one is a bad decision, but in DW we’ve seen multiple times the Doctor willing to sacrifice multiple people to save say Rose or Clara. Also yes, tell River who at that point was going to be captured again by the silence he had a way to cheat death so they could work around it 🤷🏾‍♂️ 5. Not a dumb decision, but again a cruel and logical one. Knowing they simply have to wait 3 months for the family to die off, and simply hiding until they do is a dumb decision? Really? 4. Agree. Even Moffat agrees is dumb. 3. Do I even have to explain why this isn’t a *Dumb* decision 2. She though he was *Dead*, she didn’t want to leave him in some foreign place, so she moved his body to his “home”, which as seen in Name of the Doctor, isn’t the first time that happens. She hoped he was alive but assumed dead. 1. 🤦🏾‍♂️

Just like the META crisis Doctor, human body, one heart and stuff, but a Time Lord's mind. It works for META-10, because he was "born" like that, while Donna was forcibly fused with Time Lord DNA. The Chameleon arch can reprogram a Time Lord, but I doubt it works on a human, who just fused with some Time Lord DNA. Also the pain. The Doctor isn't a sadist. He underwent that himself, it was his decision, seeing that Donna didn't want to change, he would have to force her. Think of that. As a side effect, it also rewrites the Doctor's personality, memories and stuff completely (save for some dreams), so would Donna still be Donna in the end?

I don't see that killing the members of the Silence who were on Earth, and/or forcing them to flee Earth (as it's implied that most of them will leave instead), constitutes genocide. For it to be genocide, ALL of the members of the race known as the Silence would have had to be on Earth, with no way off the planet. And since we see them hanging around in "church" in one of the spaceships around Trenzalore, we know that they WERE a space-traveling race. And the Silence still had the best defense mechanism, where no one could remember them unless they were looking at the Silence.
@Croftice1
@Croftice1 3 жыл бұрын
Before anything else, they aren't a race. They are genetically engineered priests (as Clara walks in front of one in the church, he hisses "confess" at her) and the Silence was later declared by Mother Superior, Tasha Lem, for the Doctor down on Trenzalore never speaking his name. The enemies known as "Silence" are in fact a faction, that broke apart of the church, the Kovarian chapter, going back through the Doctor's timeline trying to stop him. So the execution, that the Doctor broadcasts with the Moon landing was only to erase those on Earth (and perhaps on human colonies in the future), not the whole "species". Thus it can't be viewed as genocide. The priests of the Mammal Mainframe were actually fighting alongside the Doctor's allies in the final battle.
