I watched FBAWTFT twice and, while the reveal was less shocking the second time, it still ruined the film for me. I absolutely loved the book and still haven't made up my mind if the movie was any good at all. It did one thing amazingly well. I have to agree with everyone's comments. The twist was excellent but Johnny Depp just somehow doesn't seem cut out for the role, everything seems a bit disjointed when Depp is seen in the film. I just hope we'll get to see Collin Farrell again because I thought he made the film so much better when he was in it and would have worked perfectly fine as a villain without Rowling throwing Depp into the mix and ruining the film (slightly)!!

I just want to see more of Colin Farrell as (the real) Percival Graves. His role was charged with allure and edge, and he now has major stakes in the fight against Grindelwald, who presumably kidnapped, imprisoned, and tortured him, stole his identity, and shattered his reputation and career as Director of Magical Security. We know Colin Farrell can play all kinds of characters, from quippy action heroes to frightening psycho killers to sympathetic tragic fathers. Percival Graves' story has so many compelling possibilities (revenge, rehabilitation, just simply trying to *find him* as a goal) almost all of them linked to Grindelwald, whose story the next films will cover, but it appears there is no plan to see Graves' story, which is a real shame.

He's ripping on it because it's Johnny Depp. That's why a lot of people ripped on it. All because of Depp's off screen personal issues. It was one line and all of two minutes tops and I didn't even know he was in it until the end credits. The cameo was nether smart nor dumb good nor bad it just was. Hell there were other twists in the movie you never saw coming. But of course people are panning things about the movie because they can and because they want to rip on the way Eddie acted and how they claim Newt had now dimension to the character.

i think its just because graves character was actually really good, however it was pretty obvious he was grindlewald.. i enjoyed collin farrels portrayal, and depps 2 lines were actually so bad, hopefully he can pull it together in the sequels
@oddellis48988 жыл бұрын
I have to agree 100% with +Paulo Faria. Going from an actor/character like Collin Farrell/Graves so suddenly to Depp/Grindelwald just threw me for a bit and made the ending seem slightly disjointed. I watched the film a second time and the transformation wasn't quite so shocking, but something still felt a bit off just from those two lines. Just my opinion though.
@user-qz2ld3vt2d8 жыл бұрын
tbh, two lines and 1 minute of screen time is not that much to act in. I think this is more to blame on either the director or rowling for putting it in. It might have worked as a cliffhanger if they stopped the movie after the reveal. (basically letting everybody forget, then the argument and then the transformation). I am willing to give depp a chance, he is usually really good in outlandish characters, but i hope he won't overplay it. Grindalwald isn't meant as pure evil but as a mirror to what dumbledore could have been. Let's hope he can show us that.
@momosaku168 жыл бұрын
I personally didn`t like it, cause he just doesn`t fit into the universe, into the role. the makeup would look good on him if he lost some weight from his face. even after the first shock from his appearance I had a glimmer of hope that he could make it up with acting, and then he said that one sentence in his characteristic smuthered voice and I was like nooooooo. let`s face it, Jonny Depp used to be a good actor, but nowadays his speach just stopped on Pirates of the Carribean. I really hope that he`ll make an efford to talk with a proper british accent next time, cause he is supposed to be british. and just imagine, that he`s supposed to be dumbledores lover *facepalm*. if they just would have found someone who looks like the older version of the actor they used for Grindelwald in the Harry Potter movies...

Loved the first one, and I enjoyed the twist with Ruffalo. It was well played, in that it hits you out of nowhere, like it's supposed to. Having him be the main person we're following was also a nice touch, since it naturally lent itself to making us trust him for the later twists.

It's not a good idea to give the spoiler at the same time as the movie that's being spoiled. I get the blanket spoiler warning, but it's useless when I don't know what movie is going to be spoiled until it's already spoiled.
@Lionheartwolf1358 жыл бұрын
While I do agree that it's a little to late to let us know we are getting spoiled when the movie title is revealed I don't think there is any easy answer. Knowing that a movie has a twist is a spoiler in itself so any mention of a movie you didn't want to spoil will still ruin it to some degree, not to mention that listing all the titles that are going to get spoiled is a needlessly complicated title. At best it is probably still up to the viewer themselves to err on the side of caution when they are made aware that the list is specifically for movies that were released in the year 2016. You should have at least some knowledge of what movies you have yet to see that year, and if you are willing to risk being spoiled for the sake of watching an arbitrary countdown of what other movies in said year have awful twists than you really have nobody to blame but yourself. Of course if all of that seems needlessly complicated then all you really need to know is that this is a list of horrible twists. As the narrator makes clear even not knowing the twist does not improve the movie.
@JCArules137 жыл бұрын

I watched Fantastic Beasts and I thought the plot twist itself was pretty decent. However, I did take issue with the twist requiring a change of actor. Colin Farrell is perfectly capable of being a bad guy and would probably pull off the required level of malevolence really well. As opposed to Depp, who seemed more content with the idea that Grindlewald should simply be a sober Jack Sparrow. It's a shit implementation of a decent twist.

I was searching for words to explain the way Depp said his line. `a sober Jack Sparrow` hits the nail right on the head
@chocolateyes6137 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree that Colin Farrell more than proved, he could bring the right amount of charisma and malevolence. Casting him as Grindelwald would have been such an unexpected choice. Especially, since he usually gives his better performances in small films. Switching the actors is pointless, unless the real Percival Graves does not make a surprised appearance, during one of the sequels. The producers pretty much shot themselves in the foot. Johnny Depp, who was great actor, seems completely miscast as Grindelwald. It is now another one of his pale, eccentric weirdos. It is just such an uninspired and cliched direction, to take the character and franchise in. Calling Depp's Grindelwald "sober Jack Sparrow" is perfect. It sums up why all his former fans are so frustrated, with his acting choices during the past decade. For an actor who used to be unpredictable, he has become a caricature of himself. Why WB would cast Depp, in such a pivotal role, is beyond me. Are they really that desperate to one up Disney?

i agree, Farrell's performance was such a redemption that I'll be severely disappointed if he's not used in the sequels (mind you, I'm automatically disappointed just by Depp's casting in the first place)

the first one, while illogical, was entertaining imo. entertaining enough that I could suspend my disbelief for the "he was behind it all along" and just enjoy the music and atmosphere and action and pretty trickery ...the second one, however, made all motivations, characters and actions completely meaningless and idiotic. it post-ponely made the all emotions, plots and tricks in the first one irrelevant, as well as destroyed the characters themselves (cunning observant and detailed character suddenly obvlivious and short-sighted) as well as more even more meaningless - (replace-horseman anybody?), and even managed to be so absurd and contradictionary that nothing in it mattered anymore because nothing made sense. Ruffalo suddenly wasn't actually in the eye? he was just a messanger? how did he have so much power in the first movie then - such as inviting the 4 horseman into the eye? and after he invited the 4 horseman (end scene 1st movie) it turns out they didn't actually get into the society? so what did they actually do in that scene in the first place (taking meaning out of the ending scene which was supposed to be the most epic and promising and magical and you've-become-a-real-deal-magician scene)? the way they went about aquiring that chip, as well as how the evil duo dealt with it and the captured horseman was just stupid. a lot of their tricks were plain impossible (e.g. _everything_ about the hypnotism, which was hugely important for the plot) not checking the magician safe after trying to drown a magician in it and then thinking that the guy's dead. hell, the idea of that all-powerfull-chip in the first place. and more and more and more. it's been too long to remember all of it, but I kinda hated the sequel not just because it was so bad, but because it retroactively _destroyed_ the first one :|

1: Blair Witch was significantly better than the original, which probably isn't saying much. But I do agree it had a ton of potential that is miserably fell short with, and it wasn't that long a movie, barely over an hour. 2: I feel like that's trying to explain The Conjuring 2 too much, I think they just wanted to keep the scary nun in the movie longer, who cares if it was actually a demon and not a bitter old man ghost. either way it looks a little too similar to the plot of Insidious Chapter 3. Still a great movie. I can't believe we're getting a movie about the nun (which i am totally down for) and not the Crooked Man, i thought they teased the crooked man a shit ton in that movie.

I wasn't even surprised by the Inferno's plot twist, because I'd read the book far enough to remember there was something off about the good doctor Brooks... Well, neither did the rest of the film surprise me. And she really was boring as a character.

The real issue with the fantastic beasts plot twist was that in the trailer a character says "This is related to Grindlewald's attacks in Europe", followed shortly by Graves saying "I refuse to bow down any long" (sounds evil) and then fighting Scamander. When I watched this, I assumed that that character was Grindlewald, and was a little confused in the movie when it was not. And then in was. So good job trailer.
