I was issued a signal by my company when I worked assisting US troops several years ago, it is an excellent multi-tool. I broke the pocket clip and need to order a new one, but the tool is phenomenal. Also, just wanted to point out that the Zippo typically uses lighter fluid which is similar to kerosene. It is not a butane lighter unless you buy specific butane inserts for it.
@micahsexton428111 ай бұрын

@EverettVinzant11 ай бұрын
The Leatherman Signal is great for bushcraft gear. For EDC, I'd recommend a one-handed American made Leatherman like the Arc. Zippos suck. They LOOK good. Unless you are a smoker, they will be empty when you go to use them. There are inserts you can put in a zippo body to make it use other fuels. Do this, and you will have a Zippo that has fuel in it when you need it. While I like the look of the Stanley hip flask, I learned to use a Platypus instead. It's flexible (so it's impossible to visually detect, I've also had it missed in a pat down), doesn't set off metal detectors, and carries more.

Genuine question- i've never understood what people need to use a blade for in their EDC. I don't think I've ever come across a situation where I need to use a blade for anything other than opening a package. If i'm camping/hiking then I might take a swiss knife. Same applies to a zippo for non-smokers (I would recommend being a non-smoker.. lol)
@hz220417 күн бұрын
this comment is underrated
@andrewgonzalez71434 күн бұрын
Honestly, it really depends on what your daily life looks like. If youve got a desk job or only use a blade for opening the occasional package, then obviously a blade isn't for you. For other folks, a blade can be useful. This then opens up discussion for "well, which blade do you use?" Personally, I'm a blue collar worker, I used to work in construction and landscape, and I'm usually the package opener around the house and office. I always have a blade on me, whether it's a cheapo little razor blade, a keychain Victorinox, a budget folding knife, a 200 dollar knife, a pocket fixed blade, or any combination of the above. I fully understand it's not a universal commodity, and each tool has an appropriate (and inappropriate) environment. I'll use a blade daily, whether it's for cutting my meals into bite size pieces, prepping cardboard for recycling, cutting packages, trimming loose threads, making clean cuts in paper, cutting zip ties, or anything in between. I find my blades incredibly useful, and I'll likely never stop carrying a knife of some sort. But I also recognize that it isn't a universal experience. That being said, "EDC" itself isn't universal either. It's a concept, not a literal list of tools that everyone is required to carry. Some folks don't carry a handkerchief. Some folks don't carry a lighter. Some folks don't even carry a wallet. And yet, some folks (myself included) carry all of these things. There is no right or wrong answer, as long as you stay legal, safe, and use what you carry. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask more, it's how we communicate and learn.

@@EvanEdwards I've done a bottom seal AND put it in a sealing body. STILL doesn't fix the problem (I get a few more days, but not a month like I have with other sealing/peanut lighters). Zippo DOES make inserts that use other fuels though (the flame is like a blow torch). These DO make it last.

Honestly, I have to say that choosing a Zippo is rather questionable. Sure, it’s made of metal and very durable, but let's be real-maintaining the wick and fuel can be a hassle, and if it gets wet, you’re out of luck. Don’t get me wrong, Zippos are wonderful; I have a collection myself, but purely for display. For practical purposes, I wouldn’t rely on one. If I’m heading to a pub and need a light for a cigarette, I’d bring a Bic or a Clipper. They’re simply more reliable in every way.

I briefly carried my keys on a similar (anodized) inline foldout key carrier which seemed like a cool, brilliant idea. Then I discovered the downside of carrying something that is ostensibly innocent and more or less harmless i.e. keys, in an outward container that looks somewhat more like a weapon i.e. a folding pocket knife. So.... by attracting attention, it got closer inspection which became more of a problem with other non-key tools or special keys that I like to carry among my keys. I went back to my keyring and problem was solved. As much as I love my trusty, old zippo (the lighter I bought at the PX in Alabama when I was in Basic), I reluctantly recognize that there are now much better, more durable, more reliable, more feature laden, less maintenance fire lighting solutions out there. Mine is titanium, absolutely waterproof, lights in all conditions, actually smaller than a Zippo, and glows in the dark. It even has a ferro rod on the lanyard as a backup.

I don't know if the Keybar is really as nice as the Keysmart. My Keysmart is a lot slimmer and elegant looking but has last me a really long time. On the recommendation of a client from Switzerland, I bought a Ridge wallet and continue to use it a decade later. The elastic that holds it together is a little worn but shows no signs of failing. The simplicity of my Stanley cup is really nice too. There are very few moving parts. In general, I have always loved things with very few moving parts and found they last a lot longer than other more complicated items. For example, Campagnolo bicycle shifters are incredibly simple and lasted forever compared to Shimano shifters. The Shimano shifters have some interesting designs that can give a competitive advantage but for every day use, the Campagnolo shifters are king. Lights have been improving every year. I have some Surefire lights and find them okay but there are a LOT of better lights coming out of Asia and they are improving every day. I would never recommend any light as a classic. I would also recommend looking at what is available when you are looking to purchase. Even Surefire is coming out with better and better lights every year. I have numerous lights that are as good or better than my Surefire plus the brightness of lights bought recently are leaps and bounds better than older lights. My first, small light from 17 years ago was 110 lumens. Last light I purchased in 2019 was 3000 lumens. I wouldn't be surprised if today's lights are 4500+ lumens.

I personally like my bi-fold "slimwallet" wallet better now than any just card holder-only type design. Ridge makes the sorting and searching through cards impossible and if you have embossed names, the cards will scratch and damage the magnetic strip on them like anything. The slimwallet is also thinner than buffway slim wallet and they provide a lifetime warranty for the cloth/material of the wallet. I personally love that material and wallet vibes in minimalistic looking cute colors as well.

I have some overlap with this choice set up…the only difference being the brand-or a homemade minimalist wallet, etc… Thnx 🔥 I have, for example, a bladeless rebar; a crafted skeletonized equally sized fixed blade; a small one battery torch light… it’s same same all the way to the lighter. I had a zippo leak lighter fluid on me once (ouch)-fool me once… Now I carry a bic, and a backup fire rod as a pendant. I also have one useless thing, that stems from tradition…my marlin spike. It’s more than necessary but I can’t seem to retire it…yet.

I’d probably swap the flask for a metal water bottle. Haha.

In real practicality no one will carry all that gear everyday unless they are batman who needs a swig off cheap whiskey. A good quality multi tool and bic lighter for everyday suburban carry. For gear that you can trust your life with is going to cost you and this stuff shown is not that.

Most of thesd are overpriced with highmarketing costs with much cheaper equivalents that are of equal quality. Especially the Ridge and Leatherman.

Zippo i useless. For a lighter I use the UCO Gear Stormproof Lighter. It is amazing. Doesn't leak. Always ready for work.

I'm sure they're nice and durable, but "engineered to military specifications" does not give me any extra confidence 🤣

Can somebody give me a fair assessment of the Ridge Wallet? To me, the handling looks cumbersome; you need to fumble around to get the one card out, you need to pay with, and then awkwardly pry it open to put it back in.
