It's so good to find people who are also going through this, life with a non verbal toddler can feel very lonely sometimes. My 3 year old is still babbling like a baby, he doesn't say any words. We have had 3 sessions of SLT and so far have gotten nothing from it. So sick of people telling me he "must be autistic", as if they're all experts. Thank you for this.

It is very lonesome. I have 2 boys and we just started speech therapy again. I agree people are so quick to label them as autistic. They've actually made some progress in the past 12 months (prior they wouldn't say anything at all). It really makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only one whose child has these difficulties and gives me hope. I'm optimistic for their futures.

I’m so glad to hear that you’re feeling more positive this week! That tip about choices could definitely be expanded to kids without speech delays too. Sometimes I find toddlers really hard to understand if I haven’t spent much time with them and I’m not familiar with their speech patterns.

I can't address enough how very helpful this video and many of the videos you have posted have been to me and my family. I am a stay at home mother to my 9 month old daughter. I first came across your videos when she was gagging and chocking when nursing as a newborn, and realized I had a fast let down when I saw the video you posted of you and your daughter. Since then I have subscribed and watched and enjoyed your baby name videos, and your tips on being a stay at home mom, but this video really hit home for me and I found myself getting emotional right there with you. My daughter was diagnosed with hearing loss. As of six months she has received hearing aids and is just starting her journey of listening and speech therapy , even though she is just learning to talk. She has been very visual since birth and we have been helping her to notice the sounds in the environment around her. We have to explain to many people in public what her hearing aids are and why she is wearing them. While this is something she is having to deal with, and is very noticeable to people when meeting her yet, it is only part of the bright eyed, clever adventurous girl that she is. I greatly appreciate this video for tip on speech and listening that I can adapt to her level to use at home, and for the ideas of how to explain her disability to her in the future. Thank you so much for what you do, and making a difference in our lives.

Thank you for this video SJ. My three-year-old was a late talker and didn't say 'mama' until he was 20 months old. He's now catching up without help, but still won't speak at all in certain environments such as nursery. I totally understand how you must feel and that this is very emotional for you. Finn will get there eventually even if it takes time ans patience. I find this video really interesting and insightful - I will try to apply these with my 10-month-old in the hope that he won't have any issues.

I’m so happy things are looking so positive for you guys now! This video was really helpful! Lots of things to take away and start doing with Oscar. I’ve found I’ve now started using some of his words to him, I don’t know why, maybe a bit of a comfort for him to use his words. But I’m going to stop and make sure I stop making him repeat things as well. Thank you! Xx

Thank you so much for sharing the advice and techniques...this made me feel so much better about my own son's speech delay. This definately put me as ease and calmed me because this is an emotional issue for us mommas. :)

Great video SJ! I can see how emotional this is for you but also how positive you are being too. Some really good tips and as you say some things that are good to introduce anyway so will be doing a few of those suggestions with my 10 month old who is just starting to “babble”.

Thank you so much. My little girl is 2 1/2 and she is now having a hearing test to see if she can hear ok but my HV thinks it's her adenoids and tonsils that she needs looking at seven on a long journey but we think we've got the answer, x

I totally agree with being honest with them about their speech and turning it into positive encouragement! Tommy knows he's deaf and understands the situation a lot more now that he's 6. He's actually got a t-shirt that says "I'm not ignoring you, I'm deaf...or you might just be boring me!" 😂 We've got the same cushion as you, so much love for IKEA haha! xxx

I work as a nanny and when I first started one of the children (she’d just turned 2) was being raised speaking a different language. So when I came along she became very frustrated that I couldn’t understand her. Without even knowing I actually used quite a few of these techniques :) I especially didn’t want her thinking she was wrong if she was saying it correctly ...but in a different language. So even though she was still very little I tried to explain the different language thing in a very simple way...and she did seem to get it. Now she’s 3 and chats away in English, but will also tell me things in French if I say ‘how does mumma say....’

That’s funny that your son starts everything with “ka” because my daughter starts everything with “ na na” I guess it’s whatever letter or sound there confident with they use lol

My son is 3 on the waiting list for to have his adenoids out and grommets out. My son finds it hard to breathe and talk at the time we ve been waiting over 2 years for his op. He can only say 4 words I give up ☹️
