10 English Grammar Mistakes that are Accepted in Casual Speech

There is a difference between how people should speak and how they actually speak. Language is democratic. This means that the community of people who speak a language ultimately decide which words and structures are accepted in that language. Let me be clear: YOU SHOULD ALWAYS STRIVE TO USE CORRECT GRAMMAR, especially in formal situations such as work reports, emails, and academic essays. However, in casual, everyday situations, almost everyone makes mistakes. And I don’t just mean people who are learning a new language - I mean people who speak that language as their first language. In the case of English, there are many grammatical mistakes which people make, but which are accepted in informal situations. I look at those mistakes in this video, including the technically incorrect usage of “there is” instead of “there are”, “lay” instead of “lie”, “less” instead of “fewer”, “me” instead of “I”, and more. Watch this class to learn the correct usage in all of these cases, and to learn how many people actually speak in casual settings. Test your own grammatical understanding by doing the quiz at engVid - and don’t worry if it’s not perfect! You’re probably not alone. www.engvid.com/10-english-gra...

"There is a lot of..." is actually correct. "A lot" is singular. Here, "lot" is a singular noun meaning a group or set of objects. That is why it uses the article "a". "There are many..." is plural.

Hola. If you can do one video about this mode of listening English and waiting the feedback from people for add another one. Thanks for you help.

If I say my friend and I are going to go to grocery store, is that correct? What if I say my friend and I am, is that accepted? I'm asking this because I usually make this mistake. Thank you for the video ❤️
@engvidAlex
@engvidAlex Жыл бұрын
In this case, "My friend and I are..." is the correct form. You're saying "We are." If you use "or," the verb agrees with the closest subject. For example, "Julia or I am going to get the job." But even in this case, "Julia or I are..." is accepted. "My friend and I am..." sounds weird and isn't accepted...at least, not where I live, and not in the areas I'm familiar with. :)

Hi, Alex. I am a stickler for grammar accuracy. As a result, it always surprises me to see English teachers, some of whom are natives, making these mistakes while teaching.

@6:41 If we're going to be pedantic then it should be "She is the woman *whom* he married," not "She is the woman *who* he married." If we're going to be correct, let's be correct.
@engvidAlex
@engvidAlex 7 ай бұрын
The use of “whom” has been being phased out of sentences like this one for decades. You’re right, of course, but popular usage eventually becomes the rule. I advise my students to use “whom” correctly in formal writing and speaking, but in everyday situations, most native speakers have no clue when they should use “whom,” so it’s not fair to expect learners to know when to use it either except as a didactic exercise which satisfies curiosity. It would be wonderful if everyone knew how to use it, though!

Ha! What a question. :) Not really, no. As I mentioned, good grammar is always preferable to technically incorrect grammar. If you do make these mistakes, though, it's not a massive deal in a casual setting (unless your friends are grammar jerks!).
