This is a perfect introduction to Shaw. It covers so many of their different approaches. Black Magic is a great appetiser for SB’s horror output too. Your number one gets massively overlooked as well, especially considering how innovative it was.

Great picks Will, Legendary Weapons is batshit insane that final fight jaw dropping, Gordon Liu is amazing in Eight Diagram Pole Fighter what cracks me up is the ending when the monk says "were driving away wolves" it just always cracks me up. Kingboxer i only recently watched on Shawscope Vol 1 & i loved it, i hope future Shawscope releases include One Armed Swordsman films & Brave Archer its such a shame Alexander Fu Shang passed away he was able to combine martial arts, humour & drama so effortlessly. I also just watched Mighty Peking Man on Shawscope Vol 1, i thought i mixed up my bipolar meds it was mental in a good way 😂😂😂

Excellent list of some 'overall' SB flicks... as a longtime fan of their movies I def prefer the Chang Cheh ones most of all. If you do a follow up video be sure to add Chinese Super Ninjas, Clan of White Lotus and Heroes of the East plus wait did you actually not include 36th Chambers? ahh as you can see I like the Gordon stuff!

I almost put Five Elements Ninjas on here, but it's so violent I decided to leave it off in favor of stuff that might be more palatable to general audiences. I think that's a super fun movie but it's so ludicrous I would imagine it's hard to take for a lot of people. Heroes of the East is one of the first Shaw films I saw, I love that movie, and it was on my list of about 30 that I whittled down to make this list. I also almost put Executioners from Shaolin, which honestly I prefer to Clan of the White Lotus. I picked 8 Diagram Pole Fighter over 36th Chamber.

My top 10 essential Shaw Bros: 1. Master Killer (36 chambers of Shaolin) 2. Brave Archer (based off a popular comic book story) 3. 5 Deadly Venoms (essential) 4. Cripple Avengers (Venoms Part 2) 5. King Boxer (Five Fingers of Death) 6. Kid with the Golden Arm (great fighting) 7. One Arm Swordsman (classic Kung fu from the 60’s) 8. Executioners from Shaolin (story of Hung Si Kuan, and wife Wing Chun create the Tiger/Crane system to defeat Pai Mai) 9. Fist of the White Lotus (great comedy flick) 10. Hero’s Two (the story of Hung-Si-Kuan, maybe a more historically accurate version)

I got into Shaw a lot later than Golden Harvest, Jackie, Chow Yun Fat, John Woo, all that stuff, so I'm right there with you. It's been so great seeing all these new releases of these classic Shaw films. I'm hoping to get my hands on that Arrow set soon, and I'll definitely be picking up Legendary Weapons of China from 88. I'll have to be judicious about what else I get because I'm gonna run out of money eventually!

I appreciate your list! I ordered a couple of titles based on it in fact, and today I just watched Death Duel (horrid title tbh, but perhaps it sounds better in Chinese), and I absolutely LOVED it. I loved the set design / artistic style and I prefer these movies with more story & character development over weapons & over-the-top action. I had already seen 5 Deadly Venoms (as a kid), yet One-armed Swordsman was my reintroduction to these films rather recently, and I loved that story and look as well. Looks like I'll need to check out more of those films you mentioned by Chor Yuen. Thanks again, as I can tell which films from your list wouldn't be for me, and which ones will be!

Definitely Avenging Eagle! Sun Chung is a great director. Deadly Breaking Sword is a good one of his as well. Well, and Fistful of Talons, but that's not Shaw Brothers. Chang Cheh's The Assassin is one of my favorite of his films. That and Boxer Rebellion. The Water Margin films are dope too. How can you neglect to mention Five Element Ninjas?!
@hkcinemasociety
@hkcinemasociety 4 жыл бұрын
Five Elements Ninjas was definitely on my short list. I came very, very close to putting it but it's so violent, and I was attempting to do a list for more general consumption, thought that movie might turn people off with the dismembering and stuff. Personally, though, I love it. It's so over the top. If I do a second list like this, will definitely include that one. Nearly included Masked Avengers as well. Deadly Breaking Sword is a great movie. I don't think I've seen Fistful of Talons, and I don't remember whether I've seen The Assassin. I tend to watch Shaw movies in bursts or 10 - 20 over a few weeks, and I sometimes get them confused and forget which ones I've seen. The Water Margin is a great movie.

There are some people who don't like Come Drink with Me because it's not a nonstop, bone breaking, bloodletting extravaganza, more of a plot and character driven film with a lot of martial arts in it, but I love that movie. It's so much fun, and when you watch it after having seen other Shaw films, you really see how influential it is. It's great. Dragon Inn, by the same filmmaker, is probably even better, but I thought Come Drink with Me would be better to include because it came first. I know what you me about the watch pile! Yo, quick question. Im trying to find a film. I dont remember the full plot, i have vague memories of it. It starts off with a drifter who is a vampire or demon, and he goes to brothels and steals life energy from the women. When he turns, theres like a group of smaller demons who jump around the room. He has to feed them in order to keep going. See what you can find for me. I know ive seen it on youtube before, just dont remember where.

I think you've underestimated the impact of King Boxer and over-estimated Enter the Dragon. As "5 Fingers of Death", King Boxer hit #1 at the US box office soon after it's release and it was subsequently joined in the top 10 by such movies as Lady Whirlwind (Deep Thrust), The Duel (Duel of the Iron Fist) and Bruce Lee's own Big Boss (Fists of Fury) and Fist of Fury (Chinese Connection). Enter the Dragon may have been the king, but with Kung-Fu fever infecting the box office several months prior to its release, it had quite the royal court preceding it.
@hkcinemasociety
@hkcinemasociety 4 жыл бұрын
I'm very wary of trying to create revisionist history as clickbait because I see that as a major trend on a lot of platforms and websites and it usually lacks subtlety or insight or value. So yeah, you are totally right that all those movies did well before Enter the Dragon came out. But as best I understand it, and as I said before the videos, I'm definitely not a film historian, Enter the Dragon was really the landmark moment that created the cultural zeitgeist of kung fu movies in the '70s. I'm wary of saying all of that was due to King Boxer and being a little misleading. I feel as though the films that came out before paved the way, but Enter the Dragon and Bruce Lee are really the ones that supernova-ed. I kind of think of it in terms of Alice in Chains and Soundgarden and Dinosaur Jr and other bands like that existing and having success before Nirvana, but Nirvana really being the band that took it to the next level. Enter the Dragon being Nevermind and Bruce Lee being Nirvana in this analogy. But if I'm wrong about this, which is totally possible, because I didn't live through it I just read and hear about it, please do let me know.
@trsniffy
@trsniffy 3 жыл бұрын
@@hkcinemasociety Warner Bros--who was co-producing Enter the Dragon with Golden Harvest--used King Boxer as a cheap way to test the US market for kung fu movies. King Boxer was given a limited release in March of 1973, while Enter the Dragon was still being shot. In only 3 theaters in its first week, 5 Fingers of Death made nearly $700,000 and was the No. 1 movie that week. It went on to earn $3.8 million in the United States and stayed in the top three spots for six weeks, despite playing only in an handful of theaters. Warners (not to mention Hong Kong) was utterly shocked at the film's success, and it most definitely caused Hollywood studios to begin importing HK kung fu movies rather than just producing their own. It also changed Warners' treatment of Enter the Dragon, which at that point was a pretty troubled production--Bruce Lee refused to work for two weeks because his script changes weren't used, leading Lee to write a letter to the Warners Studio head, and the American and Hong Kong crews struggled to work together. What was supposed to be a low-budget film shot on a tight schedule was becoming a headache, but the unexpected success of King Boxer led Warners to not only support the film, but to develop a massive $1 million marketing campaign that was unusually aggressive for the time.

It's a shame that the vast majority of the Shaw Brothers back catalogue was locked away until a relatively short time ago. Over here in the UK we had home rental releases of several SB movies (King Boxer, The Killer, Boxer from Shantung, 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Legendary Weapons of Kung Fu, Five Superfighters, Executioners from Shaolin, Shaolin Challenges Ninja....) all Pan/Scan-English Dub. So, for me SB movies have been a part of my life since 1986 (when I was 10 years old). The remastering and re-releasing of the entire SB collection has been fantastic.. Except for the fact they are almost impossible to get Region Free on DVD/Blu-Ray meaning what we have over here (officially) is a small fraction of what is available in the US or Hong Kong..... As for my top 10: 10: Heroes Two (1974) 09: Blood Brothers (1973) 08: All Men Are Brothers (1975) 07: Five Venoms (1978) 06: Challenge of the Masters (1976) 05: Martial Club (1981) 04: My Young Auntie (1982) 03: Legendary Weapons of Kung Fu (1982) 02: The Killer (1972) 01: King Boxer (1972) Honorable mentions to all the other films listed in the 'rental section' above!!

Yeah I've been terrible about it this year, too busy with nonsense. I'm hoping we'll have two lists for this Shawtember within the next 10 days.

Are the Basher Box films Shaw films? I should rewatch those again because I’ve been wanting to. Andy Lau’s birthday is also on September 27 so I have to watch a weeks worth for him as a huge fan! I can’t leave him out either! So much to do!

The Cave of the Sikken Web is based on Journey to the West. The same story inspired Toriyama to create the Dragon Ball series.

Here is a live broadcast of Andy Lau during a birthday celebration. It was broadcast today for his birthday 9/27/20. It would have been probably 5am or so where you are so if you’re interested it is posted on my channel community chat and here is the link as well. live.awc618.com/live_vod.html

Nice list, seen maybe 1/2 of them? All readily available on Prime with sub or to rent. But man the English dubs make me cry. Why, why? :( Gonna honorable mention The Lady Hermit. Good one.

Most of these top 10 essential films are so obscure...no Life Gamble, InfraMan, The Magic Blade????
@trsniffy
@trsniffy 3 жыл бұрын
Most of them are definitely not obscure. 2 Champions of Shaolin was an odd one (its a underwhelming Venoms film), but the rest are well-known and his top 6 are among the best Shaw brothers movies ever made have reputations far greater than Life Gamble (another minor Venoms Mob movie), Super InfraMan (a goofy b-movie), and The Magic Blade (my favorite Ti Lung movie, but my fav doesn't = essential).

This year 2021 I watched several Shaw movies: Lady of Steel Ambush Village of Tigers Heroes of the East! All great films and I definitely recommend each of them! Great action-packed finales!

Heroes of the East is such a classic movie! I was going to do another list like this for this year and time just got away from me, but Heroes fo the East would definitely be on there! I haven't seen those other ones, I'll have to check them out.

Guy 🤨?? Other than Lo Leigh in King Boxer & The 5 Deadly Venoms NOBODY else is paying attention to those C to D level films!! That Venom Mob 📽 "Heros from Shoalin" wasn't even a best Venom Mob film. The 📽 film was 1 of THEE last of The Mob' films
