We’re *definitely* finding more great runes in DLC. It isn’t only Ranni’s rune we’re still missing, Miquella’s still has yet to be found. Considering how much is left in the air surrounding Miquella, and all the theorizing that we’ll get a Painted World-styled “Dream World dlc, it wouldn’t be surprising if we find his great rune in a future expansion.

Radagon reforging the Moonlight Greatsword after leaving Rennala is heartbreaking, especially considering how much it shattered her. It also further solidifies Rannis resentment of the Golden Order. Such fantastic writing in such minute detail.

I hope it turns out that Radagon was forced to leave, true it's a lot more tragic with 2 broken hearted lovers, but I think that would be a neat story arc I can't quite wrap my head around Radagon being Marika, I wonder if she didn't just forcefully take his body in preparation for the shattering to try to escape the wrath of the Erd Tree/Elden Beast I should point out I haven't progressed more than halfway through the game yet either, so I'm probably getting things wrong on a foundational level

@@TiddyTwyster Me too. It's just so weird that radagon left rennala all off sudden without a warning when he seemed head over heels for her and did so much to marry her. In my head it only makes sense if: 1) radagon never truly cared about rennala at all and seduced her with the sole purpose of conquering liurnia, or 2) he really did love rennala and was forced to leave her (I kind of lean towards this bc he left rennala a great rune and kept his moonlight greatsword)

@@SaSa-gn3rr From what I've been reading, I think Radagon was split from Marika in order to conquer the Carians. In some item descriptions I'm pretty sure it's stated that the Carians were one of the only forces able to stand against Marika's conquest of the Lands Between. Fighting against the power of the moon and the stars wasn't working so Radagon successfully won Rennala's heart instead. As for why Rennala is so messed up now, my guess is that she realized that Radagon and Marika were the same and suffered some consequence in some way. Or maybe she's just that heartbroken, we've all been there lol

The crucified bodies are hung up by the tarnished hunters that I think Varre warns you about when you first talk to him after leaving the Chapel of Anticipation. A lot of the crucifixes have sentries sitting beneath them or camps nearby. There's also usually golden runes found at their base, signifying that they were tarnished tortured to death and have dropped their runes now.

Have we considered the Erdtree was literally grafted onto the base of the Great Tree? Looking at the Erdree's trunk where the doorway inside is, there is a large, stark triangular cut where the color is darker instead of golden. Tree graftings can look exactly like this when cuttings are forced to grow onto the base of another plant. This would make sense with the "symbiotic" nature of roots of one tree feeding into the branches of another. Where they meet is where the player enters, and where both Marika and Radagon are housed simultaneously. Maybe Godrick's grafting idea was pulled from the tree.

Going to paste my other comment: i think that the erdtree is probably not an actual living being, but a spiritual entity conjoined with the previously existing greattree, which provides the physical body. I think the fact that the erdtree interrupts without a clear end, exactly like the ones you see during the Elden Beast fight, shows this. Its also impossible to see where it ends in the ground, while it is possible to see the complex of roots of what is probably the greattree in the underground locations, where godwyn's body and fia are. And as you correctly said, where the erdtree "cover" isnt present, the normal tree you see is instead, imo, the greattree.

In the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending, when the Erdtree is being consumed by the Flame of Frenzy, you can see a trunk is left behind, much darker in texture and color, a bit more similar to the roots in Deeproot Depths. Maybe this is the trunk of the Great Tree that the Erdtree was grafted onto?

Many people are rightly pointing out that the Rune of Death curves downwards, and that Marika's "seal" or the crucifix curves upwards. Not sure what to make of that yet, but I should have mentioned it. Compiling some current theories I've seen posted below: Delphyne Null says "Marika’s seal isn‘t quite the same as the Rune of Death, the arc turns downward in Destined Death but upward in Marika’s Elden Rune. Perhaps the similarity owes to the fact that it’s the rune kept by her empyrean shadow and half-brother Maliketh" Swag Yolosmith says "We have seen that siblings tend to have complementary runes. Melina's rune of rot and Miquella's rune of abundance, in addition to Morgott and Mohg's runes being mentioned as being twins as well. Maybe marika's great rune is the rune of Life, which is why it's so prominently featured; her blessing is the promise of eternal reincarnation and life through the erd tree for the worthy. It makes more sense that it would be in iconography if this was the case." Paraphrasing Quelaag: "It could represent the marriage of opposites which is a common theme in Elden Ring (see: gravity, crucible)"

Something I have noticed is that the “misbegotten” enemies share a lot of design elements with the crucible knights. The misbegotten have tails that look like the aspect of the crucible: tail, a misbegotten lion fights alongside a crucible knight, and those lions even share a move with the crucible knights (one where they stomp on the ground and do two spinning slashes). Additionally, the misbegotten themselves look like a bunch of creatures mismatched together, almost parroting what we know about the crucible, the fact that it was a time when all life was together. Crucible knights and misbegotten also have massive feathered wings. There are so many similarities. I think the answer to the question of what the crucible is lies in the link that is between the crucible knights and the misbegotten

It’s also worth noting that there’s at least two Great Runes that another Tarnished (probably Vyke) held. Finger Reader Enia mentions that she’s seen somebody else with two Great Runes before. My theory is that there were a lot of more minor Great Runes, held by weaker Shardbearers, but since the Shattering all of these have since been claimed, leaving only the strongest Demigods in the most advantageous positions. That could be part of why Margit is guarding the route to Stormveil. Godrick is the weakest demigod remaining, so Margit is using him as bait. As to why we never see these lesser Great Runes, I’m not sure. Maybe they’re just so relatively insignificant that they’re absorbed as regular Runes? EDIT: Damn, apparently doing edits removes hearts, lol. Updated the comment to include more of my thoughts, and lost the heart that Vaati gave it.

The sign of the Fell God is the face-torso. Considering Prometheus symbolism, the traitor Trolls obviously had the influence of the Fell God "ripped" from their abdomen. This would be like Prometheus' torture to Aquila, Zeus' Eagle. The giants in the graveyard, killed by thorns...obviously killed by Death, all have these faces. There are also tablets of some form within each troll's torso, which might be in relation to the stone tablets made in the Queen's Bedchamber. Considering that it looks like the body has taken to these tablets as if held in by roots might be the evidence.

The crosshatch could be a sign of Radagon's commitment to the order the Elden Ring represented. Like a net, binding the law together, or even chainmail protecting it from being broken. His work in reforging the Elden Ring would fall in line with that commitment, and provide added symbolism to the crosshatch: stitching it back together.
@redmarch8
@redmarch8 2 жыл бұрын
This is a great theory-the shape of the hatching also seems like a visual reference to skin grafting, which would also place the concept of "grafting" into the world more solidly, as a sort of bastard-version of the original reparations/perfections Radagon made to the Ring. Might also give some understanding as to why there are things like misbegottens and demi-humans if Radagon's "grafting" of the Golden Order had some sort of trickle-down effect on the biology of the Lands Between. Animals became enmeshed, "grafted" together into these winged half-humans.

One thing I found interesting about the Great Runes; All of the runes have a circular design, which often represents chaos (or something natural). On the opposite side, straight lines often represent order (or something man-made and/or unnatural). Radagon’s great rune is the only one that does not have a circular design. So it could be a hint that he was actually created rather than born. Created by Marika or the Greater Will, I’m not sure which. But I found it interesting nonetheless.

Marika’s seal isn‘t quite the same as the Rune of Death, the arc turns downward in Destined Death but upward in Marika’s Elden Rune. Perhaps the similarity owes to the fact that it’s the rune kept by her empyrean shadow and half-brother Maliketh.

We have seen that siblings tend to have complementary runes. It makes more sense that it would be in iconography if this was the case.

Yeah I think the rune of death is on the opposite end. Marika's rune being the one that confines her, or maybe hers is "life" since she gave birth to the rest of the great rune holders. Maybe since she is so powerful, her own rune is the only thing that can contain her and the Greater Will had Radagon leave Rennala to go seal themselves in the Erdtree.

Yeah, that actually bothered me a little. Not in this video but in the game. Kinda want them to look the same since it would make sense in some way. I think that it's highly possible that Ranni may have given her great rune to Vyke. Gideon says that Ranni casted aside he rune and Vyke was the closest to becoming Elden Lord before the player. And the 2 fingers forbids you from going to the capital until you collect at least 2 runes. And Vyke clearly made it to the capital and even further, to the mountain of giants because you can find him imprisoned in an evergaol there. And when you get 2 great runes and speak the the finger reader in the roundtable, she will state that she has only ever seen 2 great runes in one place one time before. Considering that Vyke was the closest other person to Elden Lord before you, I think she could definitely be referring to Vyke also collecting 2 great runes. So I personally like to believe that Ranni gave Vyke her great rune, and he may have collected a second great rune that we haven't seen. Possibly Miquella's, since we haven't seen theirs. There could also be some other great runes that he may have had and we just haven't heard about. Some more lore and theories on Vyke and his story with the frenzied flame for those that are interested: Vyke was the closest to becoming Elden Lord before the player, which is stated by his armors description. Also another interesting fact is that Vyke is on the cover of the game. Though, I think the cover version of him is before he became frenzied because he doesn't have fingerprints on him from what I can tell. The exact description of his armor reads, "Iron armor singed and blistered by fingers. Worn by Vyke, knight of the Roundtable Hold. No other Tarnished was closer to the throne of the Elden Lord than Vyke. But without announcement, Vyke traveled far below the capital, and was scorched by the flame of frenzy. Did he make his choice for his maiden, or did some other force lure him with suggestion?" Something that is really interesting, is that when you first arrive at the mountain of the gaints, there's a possibility that you may run into Yura the bloody finger hunter. However, he is no longer Yura. It is actually Yuras corpse being possessed by the spirit of Shabriri. There, he will inform you that you will have to sacrifice Melina to burn the Erd Tree and tries makes you feel bad by basically saying that you are a shitty person if you make your maiden burn herself alive just so you can become lord. He then follows this up by offering an alternative that "spares" your maiden and allows to still become lord. So he gives you directions on how to reach the 3 fingers and sets you on the path of the lord of frenzy ending. Remember the item description of Vykes armor? "Vyke traveled far below the capital, and was scorched by the flame of frenzy. Did he make his choice for his maiden, or did some other force lure him with suggestion?" I think it's safe to assume that Vyke got to the mountaintop of the giants and was probably tricked by Shabriri into seeking out the three fingers because he wanted to save his maiden. There, he became the vessel for the frenzy and was set on the path of becoming the Lord of Frenzy... But he never became Lord of Frenzy. Or Lord at all. Why? well some believe he just went mad and was incapable of continuing on the path because of that. But you fight 2 version of Vyke in the game. You fight him at the church of inhibition near the frenzied village where he will use a bunch of frenzy incantations on you. And then you fight a second version of him that does NOT use frenzy spells at the mountaintop of giants imprisoned in an evergaol. evergaols are basically eternal jails where powerful and dangerous individuals are kept. As for what exactly they are, how they work, and who makes them, I have no idea, but I'm sure someone could do more research than me. The real question is why are there 2 versions of him? Well I think it's clear that the evergaol version his supposed to be the original version of Vyke before he became frenzied, because this version doesn't use any frenzy spells. Keep in mind that even though Vyke became the vessel for the frenzy and was set on the path of Lord of Frenzy, he still had control over himself. He didn't just go insane right then an there. This is evident by the fact that we as the player still have control over ourselves and our actions after becoming the vessel up until the end of course. It's because of this that we are still able to quell the flame by using Miquellas needle. If the frenzy had complete control over us and our actions right when we become the vessel for it, then obviously it would probably not allow us to quell it with the needle. SO. What I believe happened was Vyke was tricked by the spirit of Sharbriri into trying to "save" his maiden by becoming the vessel for the frenzy. After that he probably quickly soon realized that that was a BIG mistake. He didn't have access to Miquellas needle like we do, so he didn't have a way to quell it. And becoming Elden Lord was pretty much no longer and option anymore, so he probably went and either somehow imprisoned himself in an evergaol to prevent himself from doing so. Or it's possible someone else stepped in and forcefully imprisoned him (maybe even Melina). As for why there are 2 versions of him? Well I think it's simple. The evergaol version is the real Vyke, or more specifically, Vykes spirit or soul. And the invader frenzied version is basically what's left of his corporeal flesh and body completely taken over by what is left of the frenzy that was inside him. But that's just my personal theory on his story. As for who Sharbriri is and the lore on the flame of frenzy and three fingers itself, I'm not getting into that and I hope Vaati does a video on it because the frenzy lore is the most interesting lore in the game to me. Some other interesting things: There's what seems to be a recently dead maiden sitting in a chair in the Church of Inhibition where you fight the frenzied version of Vyke. (This is quite possibly Vyke's maiden.) Shabriri is mentioned a couple of times in lore related to frenzy and the wandering merchants. I can't believe how much frenzy lore there is. It's like a never ending rabbit hole. I didn't even get into the lore of the frenzy itself, the wandering merchants, Shabriri and his grape, or Hyetta and why she is a clone of Irina and only appears after Irina dies. This was pretty much just a miniscule piece of the total lore of frenzy and an even smaller piece of Elden rings total lore. Fuck, I love FromSoftware.

For example we can be almost certain that Gideon and Vyke held two or more "Shards" (Finger Reader Enia does expect us to do as well as "young Gideon", after we earn our second great rune). Talking about being "all-knowing" Sir Gideon Offnir calls himself All-Knowing and his armor is adorned with eye and ears. And, also some characters call him all-hearing instead (at very least Lutenna does that). I think there is a wordplay here. Gideon poses himself as the smartest man in the hold, clearly playing his all-knowing title as "The Wisest". His armor, however, betrays this meaning - it shows that he is actually all eyes and ears i.e. he sees everything and hears everything and this what makes him all-knowing. And, finally NPCs that don't like him call him all-hearing because he's not seeing anything as he just sits in the roundtable hold, while his agent move around lands between and he only receives their reports. i.e. only hears things.

Spoiler warning: Oh its very clear quite early on Gideon is a spymaster. As early as the village of abenuracs which you can visit immediately after killing Godrick, you can find his agents looking for the secret medalion (as it leads to Miquella's Haligtree and Gideon is obsessed with finding Miquella). He even sends his loyal aid (the edgy dude outside the door) to kill you once you find the medalion and claims innocence when you kill the aid. Later on you can find surcoats with his symbol in volcano manner which reinforces he has or had spies everywhere. Finally his questline revolves around you going to the Haligtree and looking for Miquella. If you read the item descriptions of the spells he gives you, its obvious he believes the Greater Will abandoned the world and believes the task of killing the Elden Beast impossible. He is looking for Miquella as Miquella is the only being who can save the world but it looks like Mohg ruined that as well by feeding Miquella his cursed blood and taking him from the Haligtree

Yup, the same thing could be said to the story trailer as well. The fact that it's Ranni narrating the trailer. It begins with the Rune of Death being stolen, showing Margit has a bigger role in the story, and the stalemate between Radahn and Malenia that led to Caelid's eventual demise. And then you've realized that all those things are connected with her. She was the one who "orchestrated" the assassination, she needs someone who can fulfill the role of Elden Lord, and the fact that her tone of saying “And so, we live in a fractured world.” is a subtle context considering Radahn is The Conqueror of The Stars and he has made sure that Ranni's fate has come to a halt.

The fractured world mention in the trailer was interesting. Age of fracture is also the default ending that you get when you finish the game without doing any of the ending related side quests, sort of signifying that nothing has really changed in The Lands Between. In fact all four endings where you become the Elden Lord are just variations of the same thing (you sit down on the throne and it's an age of something). It's only when you "break the cycle" and go against Greater Will that you see a different ending to the story, which I thought was a really nice touch.

Radagon is one of the most mysterious and interesting characters in the game and he influenced a large part of the plot, but at the same time there is so little information about him, his personality, how independent he is from Marika and his motives that it leaves a lot open for theory. Theory : I believe Radagon tried to repair the Ring as he concluded it would be the best way to save the lands between - as an avid servant of the order, he probably already knew the possible consequences of such a heretical act. Perhaps in his perception, Marika's decision to shatter the Elden Ring would not be enough to rid the world of the Greater Will ( and in fact it is not, only with our help, the protagonist ) and neither would it be prudent, so he desperately tried to repair the mistake of his other half but couldn't and was punished along with her. About him leaving Rennala - Well, as Marika said, he is : " the loyal hound of the Golden Order ", his life existence is tied to the duty he must fulfill, as we can see in his Soreseal's description: "Solemn duty weighs upon the one beholden; not unlike a gnawing curse from which there is no deliverance." But even so in the midst of it all, he still left his Great Rune and his red wolf with her. I believe that the reforging of the Carian Greatsword may have been a way for him to try not to remember his wife and fulfill his duty - symbolically putting duty above love as his purpose and curse. Great video!! I just discovered your channel but I really liked it!

What I love about the Rennala fight in particular is that you don't technically fight her directly. In her first phase, her children protect you from her and provide the magical shell she's hiding in. She doesn't fight back when you're attacking her, seemingly as unaware here as she is after the fight. Her second phase is especially interesting. There you aren't fighting Rennala, but her daughter Ranni. Whether it's Ranni herself in disguise or a spell based on her memories of Rennala, or even Ranni using some magic to make her mother lucid for a time, I'm not sure, but you are taking Ranni on here in some way in either case. It's an incredibly telling fight that speaks volumes for From's mastery of environmental storytelling.

My theory with the individuals crucified in Limgrave was originally that they must have been tarnished that arrived much earlier than us who were judged 'unfit for grafting', but also too much of a nuisance to be left around, with the whole continually respawning until their job is done. They only scream at night because whenever you die, you come back to yourself at the previous site of grace the following daytime phase from whatever it was when you were killed. Thus, the crucified victims are silent during the day after bleeding out all night, only to revive the following night still nailed up. That said, there are a few problems with this. The first is that I kill tarnished all the time, and for the most part they just kind of stay dead when I do? There are a few exceptions of enemies making repeat appearances, like Anastasia, and then there's the Milicent invasion. The other thing to consider is that everyone in the land's between who has grace is supposed to be immortal. "Abandoning their birthplace after the shattering, these undead wanderers are the pitiful product of unending life." It's enough to wonder if undead is even the correct English translation here, since the proper undead would honestly just be 'those who live in death'. One of my friends felt it's possible that Tarnished have special dispensation to kill people who are otherwise immortal - the whole hewing champions into the erdtree in the form of remembrances deal - and maybe the weaker enemies are hewn without really producing anything of substance beyond runes. So when Tarnished fight other tarnished, it's a bit like Highlander, and a tarnished can kill a demigod without using a rune of death. But that doesn't really hold up either, because it's not as though it's game over forever if Gideon or anyone else kills you.

The Deathbirds were servants to the older aspect of death, connected to the Gloam Eyed Queen and the Godskin Apostles. They were defeated by Marika and Maliketh who took the Rune of Death from them, the ones we see in the game being last hold outs of what was once a powerful force. Something I don't fully understand is that the Godskin Apostles were apparently an offshoot of the fire monks who discovered the godslaying black flame inside the fell flame of the Giants. But the Deathbirds seem like something that would have been around at least as long as the Giants. Not sure how that timeline works out.

The Black knife's are linked to them well enough and you can even find one near a hidden necromancer who found one of the old death hexes, Rancorcall. (Godskin) Nobles definitely came first, they were apparently around since the Primeval Erdtree and like the crucible they changed their form except its more serpent-like instead of horns, tails, and wings. One of the Blackflame Monks ashes you find says they fled from the giantsflame. They were probably afraid of being bound to it for eternity like the Fire Giants. Magma Sorceries might be linked to godskins because of the serpentine comparisons? Then again they also have Rykard's Rancorcall which could imply that its linked to ghostflame hexes. That being said, they're fire was stolen, but not the blackflame. Adan stole it and thats why they were in Liurna. My speculation of the Mega-Elden Ring in Faram Azula is that it the Greater Will had a larger more ancient Order during this past. Dragons had a massive presence and relevance in the time before the Golden Order, so my guess is that this was their version of it. I also speculate that there is a reference the Crucible of Life due to roots being highlighted substantially on the symbol which was also a great period of importance before the Erdtree. There may be a connection to dragons and the Crucible of Life. We do encounter 2 Crucible knights within the Faram Azula, the Crucible incantations are EXTREMELY Dragon-like; horns, tails, fire-breathing are all examples. This may have been the "Primal Order" as I like to call it. Dragon Placidusax , after all, was once an Elden Lord in an ancient past before the Erdtree as his remembrance states, "The Dragonlord whose seat lies at the heart of the storm beyond time is said to have been Elden Lord in the age before the Erdtree. Dragons also had a massive presence when Golden Order is just starting up invading the Lands Between. This is because Ancient Dragon Gransax invaded the Leyndell Capital and the Golden Order suffered a catastrophic and pyrrhic victory. For the mega elden ring, I’d imagine that at the beginning stages when the ring was formed it had more rings, but there was probably another discrepancy similar to the one in the story long ago where the rings had to be reformed once more, but the one who restored order was unable to get all of the great runes (or was just too lazy), thereby leading to the rings as we know them now. It would make sense for each reformation to have fewer & fewer rings since we know it’s possible to complete it with only 2 or 3.

It seems likely that the Elden Ring possesses many domains, pieces, that can be removed, added back in, sealed, etc. New runes can even be made and added to it, as with Fia's rune of Death ending and Dung Eater's curse rune. A rune is a piece of reality, something that can be made fundamental by cramming it into the Elden Ring. So, Outergods having their own seems quite possible.

Here's a theory: I was wondering what the game actually meant by Vyke being closest to Elden Lord, and well, it seems he didn't have any of the Great Runes, and it's unlikely he was in possession of a number of unknown Great Runes, so... perhaps he had a deal with Morgott, or some kind of leverage? After all, he made his way to the Three Fingers which is blocked by a seal placed by Morgott, which means he had to have passed this somehow. As well as this, Vyke sought the Three Fingers in order to save his maiden from burning herself at the Forge(I think) which meant he had to have known the Erdtree was sealed by the thorns. If he did not have an agreement with Morgott, which I think is unlikely because of Morgott's hatred of the Tarnished, which he repeatedly calls "foul", then perhaps Vyke had leverage. Namely, Lanseax. It states in Vyke's dragonbolt that he was most loved by Lanseax, and we know Leyndell had a pretty powerful dragon cult as a result of Gransax's attack, and that Lanseax was the high priestess of the dragon cult. Vyke might have been able to hold political power in Leyndell as well as the loyal support of the dragon cult, likely allowing himself some freedom permitted by Morgott. Feel free to pick this apart, anyone, but this is my theory as to how precisely Vyke could be considered closest to Elden Lord. 🤔

It didn't really make all that much sense for Morgott to hate Tarnished as we are pretty much like Omen (with how unwelcomed and unliked we are).. maybe Vyke was the catalyst for Morgott's hate of the Tarnished. 13:00 I have an idea regarding the Erdtree and the whole "parasitic" view on it, because I get what leads one to think of it. But the Erdtree as a parasite is misguided, but not wholly wrong, because what the Erdtree does do is that it "converts" or better yet, it "overrides" the natural order of things, into its "Golden Order". And it does so through forceful influence upon the land. This is why the Altus Plateau fauna and flora are completely golden. This is also why there are Golden Centipedes, and also why even the "Gold-Tinged Excrement" is gold-tinged to begin with. The influence of the Erdtree latches on to things and it doesn't let go.

It's also worth noting that the Farum Azula was built during the age where Dragonlord Placidusax was the lord of the lands between, before the greater will was present. Because that sign of the ring was made before the erdtree, I think it is almost definitely its previous form. Also, because the root resin description talks about how the roots were ONCE intertwined with the erdtree, I think the roots not being present on the elden ring now very likely has a connection to those roots not being intertwined anymore.

@gwen9939 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's very possible that the elden ring wasn't as much put in place of an existing order that related to the crucible but that it was originally an extension of it, and later on they were cut away. The crucible was removed both as part of the elden ring but also physically buried underground in the deeproots including the civilization built around it, and the additional rings was also sealed away whatever their significance was, much like Marika sealed away the Rune of Death. The elden ring that holds the lands together that we know was most likely part of something much greater and sealing those additional runes away, including the Great Tree/crucible, was maybe how Marika and her children, or maybe even the elden beast/greater will sealed away the dragons, the beastmen, the fire giants, and most importantly, the three fingers and their influence on the lands.

7:40 i believe these bodies that are hanging are similar to us as Tarnished. i assumed this becuase nearby at Stormveil is where all “grafting” takes place (where they basically horde and mutilate tarnished) . They have a huge thing against Tarnished so it serves as like a effigy or “threat” to other tarnished because you cant kill a tarnished but you can damn sure make them suffer 😅 11:53 “Cower in fear of the night… the hands of the Fell Omen shall brook the no quarter” this is like some “ye ol’ english” that i think you are interpreting with present day english. “cower in fear of the night” makes me think that hes just saying to watch your back, sleep with one eye open because hes not actually dead yet. We see him again disgused as an NPC in Altus Plateau. We also find out that Margit/Morgott are one in the same. “the hands of the fell omen” well he IS the “Fell Omen”, so i think its just his way of saying “you have conqured me” admitting defeat in a metaphorical sense. “shall brook thee no quarter” this is the biggest one to unpack, in Old English the word “brook” means to “tolerate or “put up with” “no quarter” in a sense translates to “Mercy” a literal translation would end up looking like: “watch your back, you may have defeated me, but i do not show mercy” you won but hes not done with you yet! my best educated guess as a long time Scholar of Vaati 😁

thats a good theory, but about the quarter part: in english and irish tradition you had the "quarter days", 4 mayor religious festivals that broke up the year into quarters (lady day, midsummer day, michaelmas and christmas in england). Those days have been used as sort of due date for debts and unresolved lawsuits, not allowing such things to linger onto the next quarter. "Accounts had to be settled, a reckoning had to be made and publicly recorded on the quarter days" (from wikipedia). In that sense, what he basically says is, that you should watch your back because he wont tolerate (brook) you a "quarter day", a day where the debt may have been settled/reckoned, so no matter how much time passes, he will always be after your -ass- back.

This may already be documented, but I found something curious in the naming patterns of the demi-gods: All of the demi-gods' names share the same first letter of their mother's name, except for one. Renalla birthed Rykard, Ranni, and Radahn. Marika birthed Malenia and Miquella with Radagon. Then we get to the curious part, with Godfrey, Marika had Mohg, Morgott, and Godwyn... I thought that was weird, they should all have "M" names since Marika is the mother, then I read Mohg's boss weapon "Mohgwyn's Spear". At a glance it seems like it could be Mohg's full name, but what if Mohgwyn went through a similar process as his father Godfrey and adopted a new name: Godwyn, and now Mohg carries his brother's spear.

I believe taking a look at the alchemical concepts that are a strong influence in the lore of the game might lead to further understanding of many characters. I always figured Marika and Radagon to never have been seperate entities; both are conjoined with the Elden Ring as a Rebus. Female, Male and Divine; three conjoined in one creating perfection. This also explains their shattered body; her strikes broke the Elden Ring just as much as their physical form as they are, in essence, one. The game references Alchemy in its themes quite a lot in regards to these two. The Red King, the White Queen; matches their hair. The Death of the three fathered (Marika/Radagon + Godfrey) Orion(Godwyn the Golden) at the hands of the Moon Goddess (Ranni). The child of the egg (Rennalas amber egg). Marika is in a crisis of faith as she sees a flaw in the Golden Order, just as Goldmask will countless years later. Her wish to be unshackled from the flawed Elden Ring leads to her abandoning parts of it and making it her own. Radagon seeks to find his peace by mending and improving, instead of abandoning it. The Greater Will wants no change as it deemed the unity of three to be perfect. A Unity of opposites. Doubt and unfaltering Faith. Shatter and Unite. As Marika betrays the Great Will with the Shattering she also betrays Radagon. Radagon, as the part of her that still believes in the Greater Will and its guidance, actively fights the Tarnished as it nears the Elden Ring. Radagon was always an individual; with his own goals, ambitions and even love in the form of Rennala. Marika used him just as much as she used Maliketh to guide the Tarnished towards bringing about a new age. Ranni unboud herself from the Greater Will by slaying her Two Fingers with the aid of the Tarnished. She wishes to free the world from the influence of the Outer Gods, thereby incidentally also freeing Marika from her eternal yoke under the Greater Will. In the end it was all one big plot by Marika to escape her eternal fate. At least thats my current understanding of what I puzzled together after 200 hours of playtime. And all that that does not even touch upon Destined Death, Melina as a daughter of Marika and her closed eye being marked by three fingers. It opens in the Frenzy Flame ending with her swearing to kill the Lord of Frenzied Flame revealing that she is in fact Destined Death or at least carries its power. I understand it as follows: Destined Death was released without her being burned as kindling in the path to the Frenzy Ending. This means she is alive as the Destined Death is released, thereby restoring her power. Is she a shard of Marika? An agent of fate to preserve the world in case of Frenzy Flame? The reincarnation of the Dusk-Eyed Queen who controlled the Godskin Apostles before her defeat at the hands of Maliketh? Maybe DLC brings answers; until then I can only guess.

As an extension of this, the journey of the tarnished is also representative of alchemy. We are tarnished, imperfect, like the lead base used in the alchemical process. In Gideon’s fight, he mentions how the tarnished are meant to struggle by Marika’s will. I believe that this is meant to represent the process of transmutation. By struggling, the tarnished go from a base metal, and they are transmuted into gold. In other words, we become a lord, as gold is the clear symbol of the Elden lord and Marika herself. Marika saw flaws in the golden order and took it upon herself to banish the tarnished, preparing to forge a new Elden lord who may be able to restore order.
@JinxedGhoul
@JinxedGhoul 2 жыл бұрын
@@trentschmeling3329 good take. I can definitely see that. The process of transmutation/ambition to change is a theme throughout most characters. The unalloyed gold needles Miquella crafts turn the curse of rot and the eventual ascendancy into a Aeonian Flower into strength. Many characters try to achieve perfection through flawed means like Grafting(Godrick)/Consumption(Rykard)/Rebirth(Rennalas scholars). And in the end the struggle to become Elden Lord is seen by Marika as an eternal struggle because achieving the Great Work would mean the end of all things. And she wants life to go on. Also btw. I believe Marikas Rune to represent Life as the Rune of death is a downturned T while hers is a T with upturned edges. Food for thought

In respect to the Erdtree, I can't take out of my head the fact that, when you approach it after you defeat Morgott, the glowing golden part of the Erdtree is enveloping a more normal, wooden-like tree structure. Furthermore, when you enter the chamber where Radagon is, you see it's made of stone (in fact, it's called Stone Platform) and the surrounding walls are made of wood. Since Placidusax was a Lord before the coming of the Elden Beast and (I think) he was linked to the Great Tree, it is my belief that the Erdtree took over the Great tree, enveloping it, but they both coexist, in a way. Also it is worth pointing out that Placidusax is waiting in a place beyond time for the return of the God that he served.

He could have made a new sword entirely to represent his new place in life, but he chose to use his first wife's engagement gift as the base. Regarding Margit's intriguing voice line: Margit appears to us first as as a golden remembrance, similar to the first time we fight Godfrey in Leyndell. As we are fighting a past version of him, it makes sense that he invokes his then faithful followers, the Night's Cavalry. As an tangent, I believe that Margit took the name Morgott when he crowned himself king (just like his dad changed his name when he was crowned). Every item which predates his coronation refers to him as Margit or the Fell Omen. Whereas his Remembrance or Cursed Sword refer to him as Morgott or Omen King. We know precious little of the Omen, but we know specifically that they are graceless, and it has been theorized that they are deaf or immune to the Greater Will. Instead I believe they are attuned to a different outer god, in Mohg's case the Formless Mother and in Margit's case the Fell God. His Cursed Sword specifically mentions him recanting his accused blood, which likely means severing his ties to the Fell God which perhaps played some role in his coronation.

It made me think, when you eventually fought him, he'd be a true boss version of the Misbegotten and fight with a tail and wings. Didn't think he would be the final boss though. That or Radagon was a dragon simply because his name's an anagram for "A Dragon" lol

I was reading item descriptions of rocks (smithing stones, gravel stones, etc) and other things, and I put together some interesting information, including that gold is an environmental toxin of sorts, once a source of ancient dragon immortality, and now a lot of dragon corpses are being mined. Just for background, the erdtree makes the surrounding ecosystem golden (golden rowa, gold-tinged excrement, altus blooms, gold fireflies) "Gold-tinged excrement is a highly stable substance; it doesn't dry out, nor does it lose its customary warmth or scent. For better or for worse, it remains as it is." Anything gold is excessively stable, like the Golden Order, as its "immutable". Immutability is kind of like immortality for matter. Several living things, trees included, adopt the gold that runs through the ecosystem, never decaying, just building up in organisms (ignoring scarlet rot for a moment). I was thinking, ecologically, that this build-up is most impactful to those at the top of the food chain (why we ought to be wary about toxins like mercury in the ocean). At first, I thought that would mean dragons turn gold from eating things tinged with it, like flamingos and shrimp. But... The drake talismans say ancient dragons protect their lord as a wall of living rock. Ancient dragons are rocks, and were immortal living creatures. Fortissax was even known as the "mightiest boulderstone". Placidusax, once Elden Lord before the erdtree showed up, has golden flame breath and lasers. This could be where the gold came from in the first place, the boon of being Elden Lord. The elden ring is kind of like the "philosophers stone", turning mundane matter into immortal gold. In this case, dragons. Unfortunately the Greater Will/Elden Ring/Gold decided to team with Marika and Radagon instead, leading the dragons to be ample repositories for the distribution of gold and smithing stones across the lands between, losing their immortality. Stones 5 and 6 are "mined near the foot of the erdtree". They are gold-tinged. Somber stones are described as smithing stones that are "drained of color" even 5-6 which were previously gold-tinged as normal stones. Somber 9, and the ancient dragon stones share a jagged edge, likely fresher scales. The "ancient dragon smithing stones" are scales of the ancient dragonlord, described as "dragonrock smithing stones". The regular variant is supposedly a "smithing stone made polishing a golden Gravel Stone". Golden gravel stone exists! Plus, this means that certain smithing stones are made from gravel stone. Actually, I'd say that the higher the tier of smithing stone, the better preserved a scale it is. (at least, 5, 6, 9, and ancient) What is gravel stone? "Such compound stones, found in lands once beset by ancient dragons, are said to be the scales of those very beasts." "When the dragons were born from their ancient kin, they lost their stone scales, which can now be used to cause them mortal harm." Dragonwound grease confirms that gravel stones are the scales of ancient dragons. Also, the Dragonscale blade hits us with "A weapon made by sharpening a Gravel Stone scale, thought to be the source of ancient dragon immortality, into an unclouded blade. Alas, the Dragonkin Soldiers never attained immortality, and perished as decrepit, pale imitations of their skyborn kin." Yes that's right! Ancient Dragons may be immortal because of their gravel stone scales, which produce lightning. Some lightning is kind of gold? This one is weird, but what if it's like, literally acting as electricity, powering the dragons forever? Idk! But gold and immortality are linked, which we will discuss later in this massive comment. If there is golden gravel stone used to make ancient dragon smithing stones, there should be golden dragon corpses, but there aren't. All dead dragons are grey stone. Looking closely at Placidusax, he appears tinged with gold on his wing membrane and wounds, he also blasts golden breath. Other Azula dragons have gold wing membranes. So living ancient dragons have gold in them. But what happens to it? Somber stones are smithing stones with the gold faded away (thus harder and better for smithing because gold is a softer metal), but how does golden gravel stone fade into somber stone, which all the dragon corpses are made of? I hope you're ready for the surprise wormface lore! So, there are a bunch of lesser wormfaces in Farum Azula. They drop GOLD TINGED EXCREMENT. YES. But Farum Azula isn't golden, you say! Where does the gold come from? The trees are red, not gold! Hah! I'd say that because it's a temple in the sky, the wormfaces would eventually lose the gold to gravity/vortex, and thus the gold is no longer there (aside from in their cloaks!). What do worms do? They burrow and often eat dead things! (wormfaces even inflict death status). What things are there to eat in the doomed Farum Azula? Dragons! Wormfaces are also on the altus plateau, in the valley specifically, which would be closer to whatever is underground. Trees in Azula are red because it is cold and bright, perhaps nutrient imbalances, and it is far from the direct influence of the erdtrees and so they grow like "normal" trees (though there is one illusory tree with a golden seed!). So, I believe that ancient dragons were at some point very golden, possibly due to Placidusax being Elden Lord, granted gold-powers. When a dragon dies, its gold seeps into the environment with help from wormfaces, who basically extract the gold from them by using death and excreting it, after which it ends up in the ecosystem, turning everything gold. So, where there are gold ancient dragon corpses, there is an abundance of gold. The capital and erdtree are incredibly golden, thus, big gold dragon corpse. Somber stones are simply ancient dragon scales that are no longer tinged with gold. Hence "drained of color". Immortality and gold are linked, hence the death of Godwyn the Golden is a huge deal, turning him into the soulless prince of death, the process creating the deathroot that allows immortality in death, as he was golden immortality in life. His "throne" in deeproot depths, by the way, has a scaled tail, and his cyst says he is the "scion of the golden bough", aka descendant of the golden branch, which I think refers to the erd-tree grafted onto the great-tree. Deeproot depths is right under the erdtree, featuring the lichdragon Fortissax in Fia's dream when she lays with Godwyn's "body". This dragon was bffs with Godwyn, taught him (golden) Death Lightning, and even tried to save him from Death. The throne seems to be a twisted and contorted body growing a scaly tail. Godwyn was very much related to dragons. As Godrick says, kindred, trueborn heir. I'd say the gold of Fortissax was absorbed by the erdtree. The ancient dragon apostle cookbooks suggest an ancient dragon cult existing in the capital, where the erdtree is, probably including a draconic tree sentinel dressed in golden attire using lightning (also found in Farum Azula). Godwyn the Golden befriending Fortissax apparently gave rise to the ancient dragon cult in the capital. I think these cultists would be seeking immortality, as the dragons achieved, by harnessing draconic lightning and gravel stone. Or, perhaps they wanted to redeem the dragons, who were ultimately defeated at the capital. Gold being immortality means that when elden lordship shifted away from dragons, the gold began to fade with it, and thus the fall of the ancient dragons and the doom of Farum Azula. But the gold persists as smithing stone, and is mined often. Plus all the gold in the environment. But, I think golden ancient dragons may have allowed the erd-tree gold stuff to spread around the lands between, kind of like honeybees and their legs. Additionally: - Altus blooms are "said to be a funereal flower in an era long past, before the Erdtree grew." It does not tell whether they were gold in the past. An era long past could refer to when Ancient Dragons ruled. Perhaps they are funereal flowers for ancient dragons, the flower then growing atop the body or grave and absorbing the gold. - Fulgurbloom apparently "grows in lightning-struck lands". It's a LOT of lightning. I suspect dragon-related reasons. Perhaps ancient dragon corpses lie under the patches of fulgurbloom. (I suspect gravel stone, as it's proven to have lightning properties) - Minor erdtrees spread the range of gold environmental effects. (see: golden fireflies) Could this mean that each erdtree grows atop a dragon corpse? - Golden sunflowers face the erdtree. Not the sun. I haven't even seen the sun, though it is referenced in passing, as if it no longer matters. For all intents and purposes, the erdtree has replaced the sun as the prime source of energy in the ecosystem. The clock features a sun, as does the dung-eater armor, and some other places where the sun is in eclipse. Castle Sol, for example. Need more info on this one. -Interestingly, Godrick considers himself to be "The Lord of all that is Golden", considers a dragon to be kindred, and desires to "return to a home bathed in rays of gold" upon death, wherever that is. Maybe we will get some expansion featuring a truly immortal golden dragon. That'd be real cool.

Dragons having been the source of all that was golden, which the Erdtree absorbed and took over. Sounds plausible to me, and I'm immediately thinking of the Elden Beast: composed primarily of night and cosmic properties but fights with gold, has veins of gold, and looks like a dragon, as if this Greater Will/Cosmic Creature is just a big copycat of energy, taking what's powerful in a given world and stealing it for itself. Interesting!

There is a very clear story under it all, but the story has already been told. It's not your story. You're essentially exploring the long dead ruins of a now stagnant world in an effort to either revive it, or put an end to it. Every single Dark Souls, Demon's Souls and Bloodborne are the exact same way. In all of them, you wake up somewhere strange, stand up and off you go, figure out what's happened.

I'm not a native speaker so I may not ariculate this well, but I have a theory. We know that Ranni is an Empyrean and that Empyreans are children from 1 God. My theory is that Ranni is not Rennala's biological child, but an adoptive ono, and that she was the Amber Egg that Radagon gave to her when he left. That wouuld explain why she is an Empyrean and why the Egg had a Rune, it being Ranni's Rune that she casted asside. My only "concrete" proof of that is that the Egg was the source of the "defense system" that Ranni left Rennala and that the Rune of Rebirth simbolizes well Ranni's Arc to be "Reborn" in a new body. PS: Since Rennala's and Radagon's children (Radahn and Rykard) became Demi-Gods when Radagon married Marika, i think that Melina and Miquella were originally only Demi-Gods, but when their parents merged into one God, they Became Empyreans. That would explain why Ranni has a Shadow but neither Melina nor Miquela has one, since shadows are born together with their Empyreans

just a theory I recently thought of: given that GRRM is greatly influenced by LotR and that the game has many references to the Silmarillion, I'm considering the possibility of a parallel between the Numens of the Lands Between and the Numenoreans of Silmarillion. Now, in the Silmarillion, the Numenoreans were a race of men granted extreme longevity by the Valars. The Valars raised a giant landmass in the middle of the sea (Numenor) for them to live in. Numenor lay between (The Lands Between?) Middle Earth (the mortal realm) and Valinor (the Undying Lands). In the height of their power, the Numenoreans knew no peer. The Dark Lord Sauron fell on his knees at the mere sight of the Numenorean army. In time, the Numenoreans grew proud and suspicious of the Valars. They wanted true immortality, and were convinced that the Valars withheld it from them out of fear of their growing strength. And so, they turned their back on the Valars, and started worshipping all manners of strange gods. Eventually, in their hubris, they put together a great invasion fleet and waged war against the Gods. It went about as well as u can expect. The Valars dropped a mountain on them the moment they landed in Valinor, and then proceeded to sink Numenor. Aragon's ancestors were actually the only survivors of that catastrophe, as they did not turn their back on the Valars and escaped as soon as the invasion fleet set sail. Now... we know Marika is of Numen born; we know the Numens are described as an ancient race from a far away land; we know Marika did not like the idea of death one bit; we also know that Marika sort of rebelled against the gods by first removing Destined Death and then shattering the Elden Ring; and finally and most importantly, we know that there is a city that lay beneath the Lands Between belonging to a long forgotten civilization that got banished there for waging war against the Golden Order... the Numens originally came from Nokron, they resisted the Golden Order, going so far as to create a blade capable of slaying the two fingers, and then got their entire civilizations buried under 600 feet of soil?

Just wanted to let you know you can see Radagons hair change to Marikas in the original teaser trailer it's hard to see but it goes from braided to straight hair like Marika back to radagons braid, the reason the hair is blond I reckon is because they hadn't come up with radagon red hair curse lore yet. I believe that this the original teaser trailer is the exact moment the shattering happened further proof is the Marikas hammer item description I quote “Stone hammer made in the lands of the Numen, outside the Lands Between. The tool with which Queen Marika shattered the Elden Ring and Radagon attempted to repair it. The hammer partially broke upon shattering the Ring, becoming splintered with rune fragments” I also believe the guy talking in the trailer is radagonntrying to convince Marika to stop “I doubt you could even imagine it” or “Dont tell me you can't see it, look up at the sky it burns”. Also also further proof is the we're Marika/radagon is in the trailer the place that is radagons boss room and is the location of the shattering! I realised after posting people might want to know exact times in the teaser so here you are 1:11 is radagon with the braid 1:20 is Marika with straight hair 1:32 is radgon with a braid 1:43 is Marika with straight hair 1:47 is radgon with braided hair I doubt Vatti will see this but I wanted to let anyone know that this is a possibility! Hope you all have a great rest of your day😁 Edit: I'm not sure the exact reason for radagons red hair I'm pretty sure I remember seeing a item description saying it was a curse. I've had this idea for about 3 weeks and a bit but after I read this item description I decided to compile all of my findings about this if anyone wants the pictures of the exact time I'm going to go get them now. Edit Edit: I have updated the post now with time stamps for the original teaser trailer and it's transition from Radagon to Marika, a something I would like to know is why we didn't interact with Marika in the final boss battle? Is it radagons great runes doing like how his rune is on the impenetrable thorns? I don't think we actually know what radgons runs does is it possible its sole purpose is to in-prison things it is after all at the bottom of the Elden ring like a foundation? I'm not sure that's just speculation 😂 my grammar is bad ok...... Ok everyone I'm not good at grammar everyone *insert sad face* 😭 Edit Edit Edit with some extra info: someone just commented with a good point when Godwin was killed it looks very similar to inside the eardtree but how is it possible for Godwyn and not to mention the black knife assassins to get in it does say that on the night of black knives the black knife assassins snook into the capital with a shard of destined death did Marika witness the death of her child in front of her killing the black knife assains and then shaterring the Elden ring in distraught after all Godwyn was the favourite child of Marika. Turns out from reading a comment that it is most likely that the lore hadn't been written yet for the fire giant lore here is the item description “Every giant is red of hair, and Radagon was said to have despised his own red locks. Perhaps that was a curse of their kind.” This is from the fire giants braid while this is confirming that radagon was born with red hair he is seen with blond hair in the in-game opening cinematic so it is up to debate on that part. Another thing that comes into question from this item description is that all misbegotten beasts have red hair are they in some way related to giants Vatti does say in the video that they all wield legendary weapons? Coincidence or not?

You can actually watch it happen in the opening of the game. In the first frame it shows marika (note the boobs) smashing the ring with her hammer, and the very next frame, flipped, is radagon (no boobs) trying to fix it with the same exact hammer. The boss fight itself supports this, because Marika is hanging, falls down, and then Radagon stands up, and once the fight is over, they're back to marika.

With how often the game "copies" certain areas, like dungeons or the roundtable, the idea that Radagon and Marika are connected could be explained by Radagon being a copy of Marika. Hence, him "returning to his roots" at the end of the game, and his original idea of order and restoring the Elden Ring whereas Marika has already had time to question those beliefs.

I don't think so, Rune Arcs description: "It is said that the lower arch of the Elden Ring receive its bounty, and this is a shard of one such arch." What is at the bottom of the Elden Ring in the promotional posters? A rune arc. The arcs we use ingame are pieces of that very arc. Going further, my pet theory is that Marika is in fact crucified to that arc as well, acting as the receiver or lighting rod of the Elden Ring's bounty. The roots on the one depicted in Farum seems to be something else, perhaps how it looked like when the Dragonlord was Elden Lord.

I think the rune engraved on the moon connected more to Rennala, rather than Ranni. The “Moon” itself seems to be one of the outer gods. If we look at the description of Rennala’s Full Moon: “Queen Rennala encountered this enchanting moon when she was young, and later, it would bewitch the academy.” Rennala met this Moon outer god, and possibly just like Marika was chosen to represent it and its faction. When Radagon and the Golden Order waged war against Liurnia in an attempt to conquer it they lost. So the only remaining option left was not to subdue the moon, but to make an alliance, therefore uniting Radagon and Rennala and embedding the moon rune in the elden ring. If you look closely at the elden ring, you can see this “Moon” rune right between all 3 rings, in the middle. Just my theory tho.

Great content Vaati, as always! here are my thoughts regarding the things in this video: When Sir Gideon says that "Ranni cast aside her great rune" , I interpret that as meaning the same as "she cast aside her mortal flesh". Since Ranni, was born/created from Radagon, as an empyrean, that means she is also a great rune, incarnate. Ranni even explicitly says this line "I have slain the body I was born into, and cast it away." Notice the use of the phrase "Cast away", Sir Gideon also says she "cast away her great rune" What makes Ranni an empyrean, was the great rune housed within her empyrean flesh, and by casting aside her flesh, and moving her soul to the doll, she also by extend chose to cast aside her great rune. As I see it, The elden ring, represents the logic of the world, or the laws of the world. So in elden ring, the primordial elden ring, is simply the elden ring, in its previous, more complete form. I shall call this the Primordial elden ring. Well, the primordial elden ring, had many great runes, housed inside, some are still there in the elden ring which is represented on the cover of the game, and in the game itself. I shall call this the Golden Elden ring. So the greater will, comes to the lands between, and it wants to extend its stay here, indefinitely. And how does it do that? By doing a little snip snip on the primordial elden ring. By removing the undesired great runes from the primordial elden ring, the greater will would be able to reign over the lands between for eternity, And thus the golden order/golden elden ring, was established, in the lands between. The most significant great rune that was removed from the primordial elden ring, is the great rune of death. We all know from previous examples that great runes separated from the elden ring, actually turn into living beings. Radagon was created by Marika by separating the great rune of order from herself. And Ranni was created from a part of Radagon. so the greater will had to ensure that it's Reign would last for ever, and it would do that by separating the great rune of death from the elden ring. And this is the plot twist. I actually believe that the rune of death was sealed away, by command of the greater will, NOT by the will of Marika herself. So the rune of death was separated from the primordial elden ring, so that death(destined death), was removed from the lands between. That great rune of death. What happened to that you might think? Well it turned into a separate being, just like radagon did, and just like Ranni did. But which being? that would be the dusk eyed queen. Also known as the gloam eyed queen. "Wow, wow, wow, hold on there" you might think, but let me list some points which I believe prove my theory: 1. The dead skin apostles, are found on Farum azula, where the primordial elden ring, was from, before the golden order removed the great rune of death from it. 2. Now why would maliketh know of Farum azula at all? What significance is that place to him? Why is he there at all? To just be a roadblock, to the player character? No my friends, he is there because of the significance of that place, the original place where the rune of death is from, the primordial elden ring. 3. The godskin apostles all wield black god slaying flame, the rune of death is depicted in the same black/white flame color, which was Granted to them by the gloam eyed queen. 3. There are some theories as to Melinas connection to the gloam eyed queen. She does say that she was born at the foot of the erd tree, which I interpret as meaning the "great tree/primordial tree". She was also given a purpose, by her mother (who at this point could be Marika. 4. Marika herself had doubts about the golden order/greater will, and their agenda. Why would she have that? They made her a God, gave her eternal life, blessed her followers, and gave her the lands between to rule over, as proxy for the greater will. Why would she harbor doubts? Well I think, that Marika came to the revelation, that this greater will, with its "golden elden ring", wasn't what the world was supposed to be. She wanted to strengthen her belief in the golden order, by researching it more thoroughly. And the revelation that the golden order with its "own elden ring, with death removed" was but a fraction of the primordial elden ring, Marika knew she was in trouble. She had the gloam eyed queen killed(previous incarnate of the rune of death) killed, and sealed away, by command of the greater will, so that they could control the lands between, and Marika for all eternity. More proof of this is described in the item "Marika's Soreseal", it is a talisman, that raises stats, but makes you take more damage, just like how Marika was granted godhood by the greater will at the cost of her having to suffer and serve for eternity. Even the item description, directly states this: "Solemn duty weighs upon the one beholden; not unlike a gnawing curse from which there is no deliverance." Her servitude, to the greater will, is a curse, she can't escape from. She did not want to be their eternal slave. So she had to devise a plan, to free not only herself, but all of the lands between of the influence of the golden order. And the key to it all? The Great rune of death. She would devise a plan so devilish, so elaborate, so long, and so smart, that not even the golden order would see it coming, heck even Sir Gideon was surprised when he found out the truth about Marika's intentions. Marika's plan was as follows: Together with rannis help, she would plan to get rid of the golden order. But she had to do this carefully. The rune of death kills a person, both in body and in soul, and in order to make sure Ranni, would only be killed in body, another person had to be killed in soul. This was godwyn. As to why Marika would slay her own son, is beyond me. But I do believe that Marika wasn't a very empathetic person at all. It is not like she showed any signs of love to another person ever. I also do not recall anywhere in the game that states that Marika loved her children. Godwyn was not Marika's favorite. Godwyn was the people's favorite. The love for godwyn came from the people, not from Marika herself. So I actually don't believe she had any problem killing godwyn. Either way, Godwyns corpse becomes infected, when he is killed, because one half of the great rune of death was injected inside his still living body. The body was buried underneath the erdtree, and from that wound in his corpse, death began to spread to the lands between, in the form of death root. Is that the only thing that happened, when godwyn died? Actually no... I believe that Melina was born around that time as well. Maybe as a reincarnation of the gloam eyed queen? She is also deeply connected with ranni, for obvious reasons, but I believe it works like this: Melina is born from one half of the great rune of death, which means she is the dusk(gloam) eyed queen, only half reincarnated. The other half of her essence is housed inside ranni, and this explains why they are so deeply connected. We clearly see that she has a purple(gloam) eye, in the flame of frenzy ending. BUT, SHE ONLY HAS ONE PURPLE EYE, and that is because she is only housing one half of the rune of death. She is not fully reincarnated. For that to happen she would need the other half from ranni. She talks about her purpose, being introducing death indiscriminate, back to the lands between, and that purpose was given to by her mother, inside the erdtree. It was given to her by Marika perhaps, when she buried godwyn at the erdtree, and from that burial Melina was born? Either way, Marika knew the golden order would not react fondly of this, and to stop the golden order from ruining her plan, she had to distract them, or immobilize them. (Them being the golden order). And here her second part of the her plan comes to fruition. She has to rid the elden beast from her body, and kill herself in order to rid the world of the golden orders influence. She planned to exile all the tarnished from the lands between, by robbing them of their grace. She planned to shatter the elden ring, so that the golden order would have to employ the desperate tarnished, with the lure of grace and the title of elden lord. She knew, that one tarnished would have to collect all the great runes, slay the elden beast inside of her, and thus rid her of the influence and duty to eternally serve the golden order. A new elden ring would be created/remade. The original one. From Farum azula. One with death indiscriminate. My proof of this: the 2 fingers and the finger maiden at roundtable hold, clearly says that "we should spare the demigods no mercy, and kill them all" so we can brandish the elden ring, and restore the golden orders golden elden ring. Everything went according to Marika's plan, and she would soon be killed and be freed from the influence of the golden order. But radagon saw through her. He would seal the entrance into the erdtree where Marika is held prisoner, so no one can enter and kill her and the elden beast. But Marika, knew that radagon knew! So her next step of her plan was to have the tarnished burn the erd tree down, with the giants' flame. The rest happens as we know it, the tarnished walks in, slays the elden beast, and basically frees Marika from the elden beast/golden orders shackles. Her plan worked. And you, as the player character, are nothing but a lowly tarnished, not even fit to graft. Your only role is to do what Marika wants and free her and thus the world of the golden order and it's golden elden ring, so that things can be restored to the way they were before, the greater will arrived in the lands between. So, all I can say is, please put out that flame of ambition of yours, you are nothing but a mere puppet, in this plot. Let me know what you guys think.

@@sharpfang You're theory seems less of a theory and more just a piecing together of a bunch of lore from gameplay, speech and item descriptions. Most of the speculation is just you putting it in your words so it's more understandable and personalized like I can't even argue with it. Plus it fits mostly with what siuan said.

@@sharpfang very interesting theory. I like the part, with the erd tree being a soul harvester. Might I add something to that theory? So you mention that originally, when people died, their souls would be reincarnated, in a cycle, but when the erdtree, and golden order were established in the lands between, they stopped this cycle of rebirth. Instead all souls would be returned to the erdtree, to be harvested. The game even says that they get imprinted into the erdtree as remembrances. And we all know that remembrances are something the player character acquires, after defeating strong opponents/bosses. Maybe these remembrances were always supposed to be harvested/absorbed by the erdtree, but the death of godwyn made sure, this couldn't happen anymore, and that is why you as the player character is able to acquire them for yourself, after you kill a boss. This also ties in nicely with the fact that remembrances can be used to craft Unique gear, Or be consumed to gain a lot of runes. Remembrances are powerful essences of powerful people who have died. They house a lot of runes, and the erdtree was made to absorb all of those, but because of godwyn, you are able to keep their power to yourself. Though I think it's an interesting theory, you have, i don't believe I see any mention of the erdtree being a soul harvesting entity, anywere in the game. So I am skeptical on believing that it is. Though if you think about it does make sense, somewhat. In the age of the erdtree, when the golden order was at its highest power. The erdtree bestowed blessings, aplenty, to the people of the lands between. Those blessings have to come from somewhere, and that could easily be the remembrances from people who have died. They are being used as literal compost for the erdtree so that they can be turned into blessings for other people. You can even see bunch of corpses stacked on top of each other, at the boss room of almost every mini dungeon/cave, in the game. Those corpses must be the compost/nutrients for the erdtree. That whole process was halted somehow, by removing the rune of death, so people would live for ever. And with eternal life, the erdtree wouldnt have any remembrances to feed on, and thus the blessings of the erdtree became fewer and fewer. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on that. I like that theory, and will try to dig deeper into it. Not quite convinced of it, yet.

Another point here @VaatiVidya You mention the the rune of death was removed by Queen Marika, but this is not true. It was the greater will that ordered the removal of the rune of death, and I found more proof of this, from the dialog from finger reader Enya. She describes the rune of death like so: The Rune of Death goes by two names; the other is Destined Death. The forbidden shadow, plucked from the Golden Order upon its creation... Unleashing the rune now would be unthinkable... The Fingers would never permit it. Nor would the Greater Will. She clearly states that the rune of death was removed, upon the creation of the golden order/current elden ring. The rune of death was ordered to be removed by the greater will, from the primordial elden ring(the one found in Farum azula, on different walls), so that the greater will could create their perfect golden order. An order without death so that people's souls/remembrances could be fed to the erdtree, so it could keep bestowing blessings to the lands between. This would also enable the greater will to enslave Marika for eternity as she would not be able to die. That is her whole motivation for betraying the greater will. To free herself from their shackles. Why else would Enya specifically say that the fingers, and greater will forbids the release of the great rune of death. If the rune of death was originally a part of the elden ring, then they would have no problem having the rune returned to the elden ring right? It is because, they want the rune of death sealed away, so that the erdtree can keep bestowing blessing, and so that Marika can keep being their slave God, for eternity. Marikas betrayal was not the removal of the rune of death from the elden ring/golden order, since she didn't do it in the first place. Her betrayal was using it to kill godwyn, burying his corpse and spreading death through the roots of the erdtree. And she did it, so that death would be possible again, so she could die, and be freed of the elden beast. Ty for reading

Hey Vaati, here’s a Random Elden Ring fact I realized: The only remembrance boss, without a cutscene somewhere associated with them is the Regal Ancestor spirit. Palcidussax and Astel both have a pivotal transportation cutscene needed to immediately access their boss fight. Other bosses such as Morgott have an intro cut scene, while Radhan has a after battle cutscene. Also Rykard and the Flame Giant have a mid battle cutscene. Note that Fortissax does have a cutscene that is disguised as a black screen that can be skipped therefore technically qualifying it. The Regal Ancestor Spirit’s remains transports you in a similar way to how you are transported to the Audience pathway before battling Rykard where a loading screen is utilized, therefore the argument that validates Fortissax’s cutscene can’t be used in this circumstance. Sadly, once you battle and defeat the Regal Ancestor Spirit, no cutscene is shown. I wonder if this is a sign of the boss fight being rushed or maybe a corner being cut? It would be cool if an intro cutscene is added in where the Tarnished finds the Regal Ancestor spirit watching over his fellow spirit animals grazing. Once the Regal Spirit notices the Tarnished’s presence, it would let out a howl announcing the battle’s commencement and alarming his fellow spirits that it might need their help.
