I remember wanting a pair of fishnet tights when I was a child. They were all the rage among the girls in my class. My mom refused to get me them because she said they tore out too fast & were a waste of money.

The baby doll dresses had high waistlines that rested just under the breasts, and were also called empire waistlines. Often, the bodice would be poker dotted while the skirt would feature vertical strips in the same color scheme. I had a couple of those in the sixties, and found them appealing.

The big step forward was the introduction of panty hose eliminating the belt contraptions to hold up stockings and making the miniskirts possible and even acceptable in places where stockings were to be worn. I remember my young son being fascinated by the plastic egg that one brand came in. In one decade women gained a lot of freedom in the clothes that they could choose and many 1940-50 conventions disappeared.

Bikinis came out in the late 1950s. I know, because I was around seven or eight when I overheard the mother of our next door neighbor exclaiming, "You're NOT getting a BIKINI!" That would have been 1957 or '58, maybe '59.
