Great list. And we have the same top 2. In fact, my two favorite bands in High school both started with "X". (XTC and X) Cheers.

X was one of my favorite bands in the '80s, along with the Replacements, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello... (Their 1986 documentary "The Unheard Music" is absolutely terrific -- and finally got a Blu-ray release in 2011.) I moved to LA from Seattle in 1987 and I will never forget seeing Billy Zoom buying a chainsaw in the hardware department at the K-Mart on 3rd & Fairfax, across from the Farmer's Market. He was smiling then, too. Doesn't get any more LA than that...

Hey Tom great ranking! Totally agree with your Elvis, XTC, REM, Beat, Crenshaw selections. I’d prob include the dB’s Repercussion, and the Church Blurred Crusade in my list. Cheers! Matt

I remember 1982 as the year I got into Hip-Hop after hearing The Message by Grandmaster Flash. I also fell in love with Mission Of Burma's first full length and was introduced to Richard And Linda Thompson. And Prince's 1999 was the first of his albums to make an impression on me. You also mentioned Chronic Town By REM. I was pretty impressed with that, as well as the Hibtone single version of Radio Free Europe from the previous year (still have it in my closet). My list is below: 1) Richard And Linda Thompson: Shoot Out The Lights 2) Richard Hell And The Voidoids: Destiny Street 3) Prince: 1999 4) Flipper: Generic Flipper 5) King Sunny Ade: Juju Music 6) XTC: English Settlement 7) Mission Of Burma: Vs. 8) Ornette Coleman: Of Human Feelings 9) Captain Beefheart: Ice Cream For Crow 10) English Beat: Special Beat Service

Love that super deluxe version of English Settlement you have there.. I might have to see if that's still available. Yeah Imperial Bedroom took a half dozen listens to get into, but it soon became an all-timer for me. I've seen Steve Wynn a few times but Dream Syndicate flew under my radar in the early 80s. It is a great album. The only other one I'd include that you didn't mention is Time And Tide by Split Enz.

Definitely a time of exploring new music, since I was not into punk and so many of the old bands were just not putting out great stuff. My buddy brought over that same single version of English Settlement, and that really started a shift in my taste in music. Imperial Bedroom was another really important record for me and still gets played regularly. Everything you showed was great, but then Chronic Town reminded me what an impact it had. So cool you got that signed. I found a REM fanclub live show from the Fables tour. Must have been great to see them live before they really broke. Take care!

REM were great in that early to mid 80’s period. The indie scene at that time was exciting.

I've been watching your top favorite album vids since I realized that we have similar tastes and the fact that you obviously are REALLY in to it ! I have been discovering a lot of cool bands from yesteryear thanks to you ! Curious, I am of the opinion that the 60's and 70's were by far the two most prolific decades in music history and judging by your favorites lists, I believe you help validate my opinion.
@tomrobinson5776 Жыл бұрын
You are correct. 😉 Pretty hard to beat those two decades for innovation and quality. Thank you so much for watching. Much appreciated.

This is a great group of records, and I love all of these, especially your #1. I have a provisional list, but haven't done a 1982 list yet, but you mentioned some that are on my list. I am sure that I would add Bauhaus (I subbed your channel).

Time and Tide by Split Enz. Australian album of the year, it charted in North America, England and Australia/New Zealand. Proggy pop. It had to be a great album to beat Circus Animals by Cold Chisel and Primitive Man by Icehouse, two superb Australian albums of that year.

For a minute I thought we were going to have the same number one, but nope, XTC wins out over X in your ranking! Our lists for this year are quite different, though in addition to X I also have Peter Gabriel and Elvis Costello. Shoot Out the Lights by Richard and Linda Thompson would be in my top ten, along with Night and Day by Joe Jackson, All theBest Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes by Pete Townshend, Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen, 10-1 by Midnight Oil, Another Grey Area by Graham Parker and The Blue Mask by Lou Reed, the album where he really found his voice as a solo artist after meandering about somewhat in the 1970s. The '80s are an underrated decade, and this year is one of the reasons why. So much great music.

The horse on the XTC is near to Oxford so soon I will get my mate who lives near there to help me see it . I don’t drive. There are others I have seen down in the south of England. Listening to the settlement lp the ball and chain track … I thought it was the Beatles getting better track

@tomrobinson5776 their best work is between the album Cool For Cats and East Side Story. Singles 45 and under was my introduction to them, like it so much that I went through the back catalog. I found the album tracks to be better than the singles. They deserve a second look.

Not my favorite year music-wise, but there were none-the-less some good albums made, as you've shown. My list would probably include New Gold Dream, Lexicon of Love and Hex Induction Hour. Cheers
