A lot of the problems with rating Starcraft factions compared to others is that their units don't make a lot of sense because they're simplified for gameplay reasons. Carriers can't have point defense guns because that would make them more complicated, Battlecruisers can't carry strike craft and mount sort of general purpose point defense weaponry, that sort of thing... not to mention that this is a universe that has a sniper rifle in it that can kill a battlecruiser in two hits if you take the campaign missions as 100% cannon, which I consider more... cannon embellished for gameplay reasons. Likewise the factions probably have more unit varieties than is implied through the gameplay alone that just don't make it in because starcraft's balance would be worse for it. It's a story that has to take liberties to allow for gameplay, and that's okay.

Here is one I can weigh in on due to experience with the Protoss. - The Protoss value individual skill and craftsmanship. If you happen to be really good, you get some accolades. One of your points is ill-conceived, that one. - Their main enemy, the Zerg, may be budget Tyranids, but they are no less dangerous or wily. The Zerg evolved many forms to deal with certain threats. The Scourge are known as Carrier Killers, as well as 'anything flying killers'. If you have an air force and the Zerg deploy Scourge, well, you may wish to rethink your strategy, and the Protoss often do that where the Zerg are concerned. - Their robots are a mixed bag, so I'll let this one slide. - Since we are including Legacy of the Void, some of your points are now not as relevant. The Nerazim are back in the fold, the Purifiers are equal partners. The Taldarim, well...They're weird. As long as you don't mess with them, they will most likely not mess with you. (The Taldarim leader is voiced by Q, so he's cool in that respect.) - You should have included shields as a flaw as the Terrans are well accustomed to fling EMP charges. That's only one race, but still a flaw. All that being said, I still think as a cohesive force the Protoss do rank decently high. They are not OP by any measure, but I'm not looking at OP potential. I'm looking at the realm of what is reasonable. With Amon, they were forced to change; the Khala was a liability, and the Nerazim rightly could be smug about saying that now. Perhaps they'll learn not to shun that type of non-conformity ever again.

also destroying the psy matrix only slowed down the armada a few days at most so they dont rely on it as much as you think, they can still hyperspace but it is slower without it. my reasoning is that because of the amount of zerg and protoss on aiur during lotv artanis probably wanted to free them quickly to make finishing amon quicker and less costly and the armada was said to be "across the korprulu sector' when the daelaam attack aiur but the whole fleet was back in time for the final battle.

@3456353565 жыл бұрын
Mark Zimmerman the Yamato cannon is essentially a nuclear detonation contained within a field and then shot at a target like a projectile. I'd wager that attack is so powerful it would even be lethal to 40K ships. It does, however, require considerable energy to use and some charging time, and Protoss/Terran ships can evade it by doing a well-timed micro-jump. However, if the shot hits, its guaranteed to either cripple or outright destroy an enemy ship, unless said ship is Protoss and fully shielded of course, in which case it zaps the shield and in most cases damages the ship, letting the fast-firing turrets on the Battlecruiser do the rest of the work.

They found the corpse of great heroes who have won many battles before butthen failed in one. If they are able to bne rejuvenated (their brain is still living) they will place their brain into a machine so they can keep a venerated warrior on the front lines. Both in game and in the books/comics this is considered both a blessing and a curse as it means they are forever marked as having lost once, but also still able to fight for AIUR. This is why you'll see protoss put into machines being FAR MORE deadly and take more risks as this second death is seen as freedom from a curse, and if they survive, they have regained their honour from the 'lost' honour from their first death.

I have to digress with several of your points: Point 2: At the end of the LOTV campaign the Protoss head towards a new Golden Age where the Templars, Nerazim and Purifiers are united as one. Only the Tal'darim refuse to join the alliance and head towards their own part of the galaxy, but they leave peacefully and even allow some members to join the new Protoss. Point 3: You contradict yourself here. "The Psionic Matrix is a flaw because if destroyed everything shuts down, yet the Golden Armada was only delayed after the main source was destroyed..." . While many buildings require it to function, all ships posses some form of "long range connection" to it. Otherwise it would have been impossible for protoss vessels to even explore the space in the first place. Point 5: Lack of skilled crew members? Do you know Protoss Zealots train for DECADES to be the "front line soldiers"? It is only logical all crew members train, at least, as long as Zealots or even longer than them to operate the Protoss spaceships. The key aspect of the Protoss is "Quality>Quantity". They are few, but you can bet they are damn good at everything they do. Point 7: That is true, but again you seem to ignore the LOTV campaign where the Protoss accept change and start taking steps towards a better society in the future. Point 8: Why is this even a point? Didn't you just show Selendis from the Templar? Point 9: Robots rebelling against them? You ignore, again, the LOTV campaign where The Purifiers join the Daelaam (new Protoss alliance) as equals to the Templars.This is a major point that further solidifies their new Golden Age. Point 10: How do they fare against other than the Zerg? They have waged war against several Terran factions... one can argue the Inmortal is a direct response to the powerful Terran Siege Tank. There are only 3 races in this universe so... that isn't technically "their fault".
@stewartb10195 жыл бұрын
Actually, there are canonically many other races the Protoss have fought, but we only have canon information about one of them: The Kalathi, who "fought" the Protoss a couple centuries before the events of the game. The Kalathi were so severely slaughtered that they ended up back in the Stone Age, barely any Protoss casualties. The Protoss looked at the outcome and decided they didn't need anything as powerful as the Colossi after the war, and so the Colossi were deactivated.

There is one massive weakness completely skipped over. Lack of versatility in their technology. Protoss can't fix things... once a ship is damaged or armor scratched, they must replace the whole thing. Though yes they have grand understanding of advance science and theory, it was heavily narrowed by ripping off Xel'Naga tech, as a result they don't know how a lot of their stuff works, they just replicate it by rote, not by understanding. Though new units have sprung up as they gear more towards war against the Zerg, they stick to old methodologies and wasteful designs that are costly as oppose to focusing on efficiency.

I'd actually argue that the Terrans have a better-designed fleet than the Protoss. I mean a Carrier is good when working with other ships and all (that's where the Protoss fleet shines, when you put a bunch of them together to cover each other's strengths and weaknesses), but it's practically defenseless on its own, while a single Battlecruiser will give any opponent a hell of a fight, win or lose. Hell, the Zerg Leviathans are a better designed "warship" than most Protoss capital ship.
@seancarroll98495 жыл бұрын
True, but I do love the variety of craft at the Protoss' disposal when mixed properly. Corsair (ground suppression), Tempest (long range bombardment), Scout (multirole fighter), Arbiter (specialized warfare), Mothership (an outright combat vessel itself), Shuttle (transport), Warp Prism (transport and warp zone), Phoenix (air superiority), Void Ray (pinpoint beam attack), Oracle (specialized recon craft), Carrier (Interceptors galore), Observer (cheap stealth recon)....Even the freaking 'Spear of Adun' Arkship at the center of the formation for C&C. An entire army and fleet can warp in without a moment's notice. (Yes, I play stinking 'toss.)

And as for the Sons of Korhal/the Dominion... Tarsonis, and Mar Sara. They were responsible, in-game, for using the Psi Emitters to lure the Zerg to Tarsonis to wipe out the population, and THEN killed the Protoss who came to try to kill the Zerg, to make sure that the people of Tarsonis would die to the Zerg. And get Kerrigan killed, because Mengsk had a grudge against her that he'd been harboring for some time. And in the expanded lore, they were also the ones who actually used Psi Emitters to bring Zerg to Mar Sara. The Confederacy just capitalized on the Zerg's arrival, and the Sons of Korhal capitalized on their idiocy. Then the UED was straight-up trying to control the Overmind, and as we saw in the intro cinematic, were quite happy to witness a Zerg attack on a colony, again using it to judge their effectiveness, without helping the colony. Weakness N° 10 isn't really fair though. To those that don't know, the Xel'Naga is the Starcraft equivalent to a hybrid between an Old One and a Chaos God, coming from the Void, a parallel universe made of energy (similar in some ways to the Warp). When Amon, the evil Xel'Naga tried to invade the Starcraft Universe to purge it and replace all life with things in his image, the 3 main races (lead by the Protoss) first kicked his ass 3 ways to sunday in their dimension, then went to the Void to kill his ass in his home turf (imagine the Eldar race of 40k uniting, pooling their tech in to warp shielding, then charging in to the Eye of Terror to kill Slaanesh in the Warp itself with a little help from their own gods, and maybe the Imperium and the Tyranids/Orks. That's what the Protoss did in the face of a new, godlike enemy). What this shows is that the Protoss are adaptable motherfuckers (especially with the support of the other two races) and are willing to forge alliances of all kinds, sacrifice anything, and go to some very creative lengths to archive victory.

If memory serves, the issue with the Purifiers wasn't that robotic warmachines are inherently treacherous - rather, the Purifiers were an attempt to make mechanical Protoss, even to the extent of giving them a collective consciousness, since it was felt that a Protoss without some equivalent to the Khala was no Protoss at all. Having done this... they went on to treat them as disposable robot warmachines. The Purifiers didn't rebel because they were treacherous robots, they rebelled because they were proud Templar.
@TankHunter6785 жыл бұрын
Which can be interpreted that as a society a big flaw they had was that any mind not connected to the Khala was one that a Khalai Protoss fundamentally had a hard time understanding and would subconsciously commit prejudice against. Which is what happened with the Dark Templar, and why they treated the purifiers so bad. They simply could not understand them because they could not just look into their mind to feel how they feel to then correct themselves. This naturally hints at an inherent racism, especially with how they saw other races as lesser unless that race put up as much of a fight as they could. This is why Protoss who fought alongside the Terrans saw them as worthy, while Protoss who had never encountered them, such as Rohana, still saw them as lesser. Though in Rohana's case she was in stasis at the time many of the protoss fought alongside the Terran and by the time she was woken up many of those Protoss had already cut off their connection to the Khala or were being mind controlled so she could not update her history. With LotV and the Protoss being cut off from the Khala they have to learn how to act without the training wheels and come to grips with how they treat others now that they are standing in the same shoes.
@stephenwood66635 жыл бұрын
@@TankHunter678 Precisely! To my mind, the biggest irony of Legacy of the Void is that the Purifiers are the last "real" Khalai left. It's also, in no small part, why I like the Purifiers so much: the Khala is absolutely central to Protoss society. Artanis may have won his war, but he's lost the culture he was fighting for in the process.
@TankHunter6785 жыл бұрын
@@stephenwood6663 In truth he was not fighting for his culture when you look at it, he was fighting to save his species, his people, from extinction. The direct cause of that extinction was the very source of their culture: The Khala. Without the Khala Amon could not control his people like a hive mind. With the Khala his people were nothing more then materials to be used up for Amon's plans. So to Artanis the pain of developing a new culture, one not Khala based, was acceptable in exchange for saving his people from an absolutely terrible fate. He had also already seen in the Dark Templar and Terrans that it was possible. That it could work. It was Rohana who was the one who fought hard to try to preserve the culture, since the culture and history was her everything, literally. It was why she was the one who took the longest to decide to do the cut. While everyone else who were given the choice choose quickly. Those in the Golden Armada experience for themselves the results on not choosing to cut. So ultimately Artanis won the war on all fronts, hit all his strategic objectives, and put changes in motion that would allow his people to salvage what was left and live on. With everyone more as individuals instead of a collective he instilled the mindset through example that if you have the skills you can go beyond the limits of the cast you were raised in. He likely got the idea from the Terrans. He probably saw Engineers who fought with the same bravery, ferocity, creativity, and skill as any warrior, which is what gave him the idea that his own engineers could likely do the same.
@stephenwood66635 жыл бұрын
@@TankHunter678 To be fair, the Protoss caste system had already been heavily eroded as early as the fall of Aiur: large numbers of the Judicator had been killed, and the Templar were picking up the slack (conversely, some Judicator, like Kizrath, demonstrated a far greater warrior spirit than their place in the caste system would imply). The precedent had already been set, it just took the Protoss some years to formalise it. It... remains to be seen whether the society forged by Artanis has the strength to last. During the war, the disparate elements of Protoss society had a very compelling reason to work together: mutual survival. Individualism is in many ways a very laudable thing, but championing individualism makes the formation of a stable society harder, especially if you have to do it from scratch. The Khalai were an empire. The Daelaam is more like a loose confederacy, and, at least for the time being, Artanis is probably the only leader whom all of its component peoples would accept.

to be fair as someone said, the society itself does cause issues with the fleet. But on the same token, they didn't do research nor included books/comics that pointed out things like there are far more than what we see in Sc 1 and 2 in population, Carriers do in fact have point defenses, and that the reason they use robots is to compliment their numbers and lower their overall losses in wars. Because loosing 10000 robots and 200 members of the species is far better to have happened then to loose 10,200 members of the species.

That said, females in the Khalai military do appear to be few and far between among frontline troops anyway, though that may be more of just a gameplay thing.
