You might have mentioned that living at home in your 20’s gives you the opportunity to help your parents and deepen your family relationship. Helping parents with yard work, cleaning, etc.

I’ve been focusing on buying only what I’ll consume. It sounds obvious but I found that I would buy too much at Costco and lots would go to waste. It was a false economy for me. They also charge a $65 annual fee. I switched to Aldi, buy only what I will consume, and have cut my grocery bills by 30%.

We built a house in 2021 and kept handing the plans back to the builder asking him to make it smaller. We ended up with it being just a little over 1200SF, and it’s perfect for us.
@GwenMotoGirl
@GwenMotoGirl 7 ай бұрын
I live in 1200SF, too, and it’s just me and it’s great. It was a restaurant before and about to be condemned when I bought it along with the already condemned 400SF outbuilding. I lived in 1 room in the restaurant (now a designated residence) while mostly DIYing the outbuilding renovation into a 1 bedroom guest house/long-term rental/income property. There were so many times I wanted to give up and questioned my sanity and abilities, but I’m so glad I stuck it out. My guest house/rental more than covers all my carrying costs including my home, insurances, and property taxes. I live in a small town by a university, and I usually rent to undergrad students, and I keep the rental rate reasonable. I’ve been very lucky to have great tenants.

@@GwenMotoGirl That’s very cool. A lot of work but sounds like it’s paying off. We live in the middle of nowhere (on 32 acres in the mountains), so finding good tenants and renting would be more difficult here!

How attractive will 1,200 sqft be to buyers when you sell?
@cs4849
@cs4849 7 ай бұрын
@@ReddingRed I don’t feel like it’s ethical to build a much bigger house than you need just for re-sale value. And my hope is that I die in this house. But if we need to sell it, it’s a beautiful three bedroom two bath house with big windows, a screened in porch, a two car garage, wood floors throughout and a big stone fireplace. All that on 32 wooded acres in the mountains. I don’t think we’d have a problem selling it.

Definitely, I am already on the frugal train- small house, low bills, modest supermarket shopping, eating at home or cheaper on the go, all generic brands, waiting for discounts if I have to buy something, public transportation only… it’s doable, as well as quite enjoyable 😊

I get a kick out of being frugal aswell. Stick two fingers up to the money grabbing corporate companies who try to take more and more from us, selling us stuff or plans or subscriptions we just don't need. I like to think I can see through it all now. Having that emergency fund is also very empowering especially like me, when you are single, self employed, and live alone
@AnaViolinViola
@AnaViolinViola 8 ай бұрын
I would say that frugality is the only way for normal people with modest income to achieve some degree of freedom. The paradox is that by not needing/wanting much you actually realise how much you have and how little you need to be comfortable in life😊

Great video, as always!!! Totally agree that living with your parent(s) longer, will give you a financial advantage. My sons lived with me until they graduated from college. After that, I sold the house and downsized to pay off the mortage. My younger son, a mechanic, works full-time, and often late. He has his own place, but we live in the same neighborhood, so he stops at my house after work for dinner. Home cooked healthy meals, ready when he arrives after a long work day- and we get to spend half an hour of quality time together. If there are leftovers, he takes those for Lunch the next day. He checks, maintains, details, and repairs my (18 year old ) car whenever needed, and it will probably last several more years. Very economic solutions for both of us, but the most important thing is that we spend time together, and also support each other...

I agree living at home is great if you have the option but to also remember that it is not feasible for everyone. Many people in the US live in households where you’re expected to pay rent as soon as you’re old enough to work, many of those same households are also abusive. Not everyone has the privilege of living at home longer to save $.

Excellent video, Austin. Unfortunately, these trends all reflect the growing impoverishment of a large portion of our population. As with most things, one can find positives here: less mindless materialism, appreciation for a simpler lifestyle, living lighter on the planet. But as someone who grew up in the Sixties and Seventies, it saddens me that so many of us can no long enjoy things my generation took for granted, like not being forced to shop in a warehouse environment, or being able to find a cheap apartment right out of college, or being able to afford higher education without onerous loans. We all want to survive and it's important to develop the skills to do so, but there's something sad about the no-frills lifestyle for the vast majority, particularly when we know that the top 1% are wealthier than ever.

You are very lucky to have had the option to live at your childhood home for an extended amount of time! Unfortunately, I was not permitted to, and did not want to, stay an extended amount of time at my childhood home because I was not wanted there and it was unsafe for me. Long story short, being forced out had negative effects on my health and completely rerouted my education and career path in a direction I did not want. Thanks to the love and support of my partner, I was able to go back to school in 2017 and I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in environmental science last year (2022), just a few months before my 30th birthday. The love and support of family (and lack there of) has serious impacts on the lives of their children.

I live in a small house. It is 690 ft.². It was built in 1900. I love it. I recently updated it. And one thing about it is it is very solid and well-built. These new homes are huge, and they are not built well at all. When I bought this house, I got it inspected. The inspector told me that this house will still be standing in 100 years. And the new ones that he was inspecting the day before would literally be falling down in 50 years. so people, go out and look at those older neighborhoods and look for those older houses. Yes, they're small, maybe a little chopped up compared to the huge wide open spaces that modern houses have, but they are worth it.

Stealth Wealth, interesting term. When we became mortgage free several years ago we celebrated modestly by dining out (something we normally don’t do) why? we’re frugal. The downer was that although we wanted to shout from the rooftops that we were finally “Mortgage free”, we instead decided that bragging was not cool. ❤ I like the stealth wealth term, resonates. 😊

It's an embarrassment that Australia has the highest house size. We copied the US and then got carried away.🤦🏼‍♀️ My house is about 1000sqft, 3 bed, 1 bath, no garage, built in 1980. People keep knocking down the small houses and building giant monstrosities then complain about how much they cost to buy and run.

Nice video, but I myself am not a fan of everything being a "budget option"; aesthetics does, after all, impact people's well being. The same goes for restaurants - maybe it is because I'm European, but why would you go to a restaurant, if it does not have a nice atmosphere? To me going to a restaurant isn't just about being fed, but having a good time. Otherwise you might as weel just cook at home. Eat out less, but better... Same goes for most things in life.

Back in the late 70s early 80s a book named Winning Through Intimidation became a best seller. All I remember is that it promoted, in a general sense , the ideas that are being put forth in this video. It helped me be successful and not tied to appearances. My basic understanding of living a good life is knowing what is enough and not letting other people, I mean nobody, make me live for the sake of impressing others. The best security I have is the knowledge I’ve gained in life and the fact that money although very important, will not fix all types of problems.

Love your videos but I truly believe that leaving parents’ home at University’s age is the best thing you can do in order to progress in life (compassionate towards others, resilient etc). I lived in a students’ residence and while I learnt a lot from Univ and now I can have a good, I grew up so much by giving myself the opportunity to live with other people at the age of 18. In my country we don’t have students’ loans per se, we have tuition fees and we work to pay it, so I can’t totally relate to you or other people who struggle later in life to pay loans, but I would recommend everyone to leave their parents home when starting Univ. It’s so important and more than a good job, those living skills you acquired by living with others are so important for your life.

I think one more thing you could have added is the increase of people living in Vans, RVs, or even cars. The amount of people doing this by choice is increasing rapidly. It is a great way to avoid paying a landlord while saving a huge portion of your income.

Agustin, can I draw your attention to something that has started here in the UK that I view as a bit of a scam. Lately at the supermarket checkout I'm asked if I would like the receipt. I guess it's an eco effort to save waste paper. However, I see it as a SCAM!! Without checking the receipt you can't tell if offers have been applied. For example I often buy quick sale items which are on or approaching their use by date, these often have 30% off stickers on them, or even bigger savings. Some items are 3 for 2, some half price limited offer etc. But I have noticed that by checking the receipt, sometimes these offers do not get applied. Always get the receipt with your grocery shopping so you can check all the money saving deals have been applied. Without the receipt, there's no way of knowing and you are wasting your money paying full price for produce about to expire

Nice video! I would say though that food trucks are expensive. Where I live, I can get an entree at a food truck for the same price as many restaurants in the area. Very few food trucks have reasonable or cheap prices. So unfortunately that won’t save a ton of money if any in my area.

I can't possibly afford to buy a house, and I'm on my own and don't want a large house but possibly I'd be in a position to afford a very small house, and I'd be very content, but they don't dont build them. I've always thought it's because there's nothing in it for 'The Man'. Utility companies won't make as much money, building insurance won't make as much, the banks won't make as much... It all stinks. I'd love to build my own tiny house, but more red tape stops you building a tiny house to live in here in the UK, even if you own the land!!!

Have you ever tried flying Frontier? Unless you’re going with nothing but the clothes on your back, the fees start to add up.

I fly budget airlines almost exclusively. A regular backpack is considered a "personal item", which is free. You can fit enough clothes + a laptop for a weeklong trip. You don't need to pay luggage fees for short trips. The "FEES" you're referring to are all OPTIONAL. Luggage, bigger seat size, seat choices, skip the line, etc. I only pay a $10 fee each flight bc I always choose to skip the first boarding group.

Hi, I'm Brazilian and amazes me why you americans need so much space, here 1200ft its like a house with 3 bedrooms wich can easely acommodate a 4 people family. I live with my wife in a 600ft house. 2 bedrooms, kitchen, parking space etc... and that seize its perfect, we can always keep it clean and well organized. We can afford a much bigger house but why? Maybe one day when we have a child or two we need more space but for now its perfect.

Businesses don't want your cash... You have to count the money, prepare a deposit, drive to the bank, wait in line, and it's a security risk that those two $200 bills that you put in the register one of them might just accidentally disappear. Or what if the customer comes back 3 days later and wants to return it and want you to give them their money back? Now you've already taken it to the bank and you have to cut them a check? Versus just swiping their card and issuing the credit...

Seeing this also in health care. 'No frills' health care (many health care providers) giving good health care for an acute problem (say, urinary tract infection) but then getting them to FOLLOW UP on the problem is like pulling hen's teeth (appointments available....in a month? two? Lotsa luck.) problem patients? maybe they just disappear/die. R.I.P. 😑
