I personally think all mobile games who makes such deceptive ads should be completely banned from any app store (but won't happen because money) And one of the worst parts of these ads, when called out the companies try to say sh*t like "the ads were made by a 3rd party so we didn't know", that's comple BULLSH*T, NOBODY would release an ad without having it reviewed first, no matter if they made it themselves or had some cheap 3rd party make it.

There's not really another way to do it unless it's a release trailer. You can't expect to see accurate gameplay footage six months or a year before launch. It's never been any different. Game publishers have been doing this forever. Game Devs hate doing it. It takes time out of development to put together something they can't possibly predict at that point. It's impossible to do it properly six months to a year out from launch. It's always been the same, as long as I remember (and that's a long time). Game publishers love doing it to hype up a release (understandably) but Devs hate it. It takes a whole bunch of people out of development for a decent chunk of time meaning more crunch or changing game design if they are pushed to do it too much. Watch a Tim Cain video and he'll say that the whole team could lose a month getting things ready, a month they couldn't really spare. I'm not suggesting it doesn't get taken too far. But it's not unusual for graphics to be downgraded or whole areas be cut for time or, realistically, budget.

Seeing all of these examples begs the question: how can developers and marketing teams be punished for misrepresenting their product so they don’t do it anymore? And one great way is this channel. Particularly with the ‘before you buy’ series. Those reviews are great for exposing any flagrant lies in a marketing campaign, which influences real purchases (including mine). So shout out to y’all for making the video game space better for consumers.

Oh man I love your first point! If there is no come up for the ad companies, they will continue it. Players, you have the power in your hands. Don't only follow the game development you have wish listed, who are doing their ads? Who have they partnered with, who is funding ect.. Keep track of these other points and on any disappointment try to track the source and Red Flag if another game you want is going through those same paths. You have the power to change this, with the only vote that really matters to them, your wallet.

Except for the last of us 2 in this video, which should never have been included. None of the gameplay shown was fake, it's story is one of the main reason people play it, they are hardly going to show you massive spoilers. Given it's so central to the plot trying to keep it secret with misdirection is what you want.

Who did that fool. Its a CGI trailer, which are generally there as a proof of concept. You have to be an idiot or very new to video games to see a CGI trailer and think it is indicative of the gameplay. In most cases the CGI trailers are not even done by the devs, they are completely outsourced. Me as a more veteran games, in most cases I completely skip CGI trailers. Though there are a few games of established franchises I will watch them. Most of the time they are a waste of time watching. Seeing actual gameplay is all that matters.

Sometimes a reddit post would just say some shit and it became cannon. Internet historian has an amazing video on it. They were pressured by so many things. The Force Unleashed 2 and Ghost Recon Future Soldier. TFU2 has multiple trailers showing Starkiller encountering Vader (including one on a planet that wasn't in the game) to give this sense that Vader is actively hunting him. Instead, Boba Fett gets hired to do it. GRFS had a whole live action trailer based around the original gameplay shown. End product cut down on the tech the Ghosts used and the level shown in the reveal was removed from the game.

So funny thing about FFXV. They quite literally didn't have a clue the direction for years because Nomura was notorious for constantly changing his mind, seemingly on a whim. When they were finally settling on what ended up releasing, he wanted to change it AGAIN after seeing a play about Romeo and Juliet. SE basically banished him to KH3 just so the game could finally come out.

@@yudeltraThey will, but in much different way. Remember back when GTA 5 have the DLC Main Story expansion from GTA trailer??? Where is the Main Story expansion after years passed??? NOTHING!!! Even RDR 2 have worse issue than GTA 5 where no expansion for Contents etc and all they did was focusing on GTA Online because it was much more profitable than RDR2 itself. TakeTwo and Rockstar right now tried to redeem itself by making GTA 6 as good as GTA SA and GTA 4 did but from the way they did in trailer was HUGE MEH and reused assets from GTA 5. Dont get me wrong, I played ALL GTA games and GTA 5 by far is the less favorable despite their huge success because they just making the game even worse than previous GTA series (except for GTA Advance which is total trash game). I prefer playing GTA Vice City and San Andreas again because they are the most fun to play despite it was already 20 years old but it still has huge fans compared to GTA5.

They at least had the understandable excuse of having their game destroyed in a natural disaster. For a small studio, effectively having to restart from the beginning of the development stage had to really strain their budget. I'm not a corporate apologist, but as excuses go, that's pretty good. Especially since they did, in the end, largely live up to (and I think in some ways exceeded) the original promises. Most likely they released it when they did because if they didn't, they'd run out of money. Looking forward to Light No Fire.

Borderlands 1. It originally was shown with a much more realistic and gritty texture and more serious in tone, but 75% through actual development they were advised and shifted away from that to remove comparisons to Fallout and the eventual Rage game that had been shown off not to long ago from a particular internal meeting. At this point they pivoted and started work on their much more comical style abd cel shaded texture we know now.

Looking back, and this technically isn't a trailer, tho it was likely featured in the trailers as well. But in the Insomniac Spider-Man games, mainly the 1st game & Miles Morales. In the 1st gameplay look at Spidey PS4, the helicopter chase & crane sequence just has a random enemy as part of this group, in the helicopter. But in the final game, it was Mister Negative. Miles Morales was less deceptive in this regard, because in both the initial showcase gameplay & the final product, it's still the Tinkerer on the bridge. Except in the final version, the scene is altered to reveal who the Tinkerer is. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart did a slightly different approach to this. Mainly skipping a few Nefarious lines, and the Duo getting warped to all these dimensions, then separated, before even engaging Nefarious in the 1st boss fight of the game. In the final game, all this happens after the boss. I get why these things are done, and it does work. Either to prevent spoilers, or because certain parts of the game aren't ready to be shown.

If I had known I was going to be playing almost the entire game as Raiden, I wouldn't have bought it. They even had a demo out, which was the starting mission on the ship, where you play as snake. But that's the only time you play as snake in the full game. Such lairs.

This one's kind of obscure, but the trailer that really fooled me was the Nintendo Wii Red Steel game (E3 2006 trailer III). Watching the enemy character animation being so fluid and life like only made me want to buy the Wii that much more. Then I get the game and realize that the Wii is severely underpowered and the character animations were jank.

@@Shiny101 While not fake trailers (that I know of) but certainly fake outs. Between finishing and restarting various works to being the father of both “not my final form” and characters ignoring deaths on planetary scales, Toriyama wielded misdirection and lies like a master. He also did it to enhance his works...for the most part, unlike the trailers in this video. An example of things done right.

I had no idea that Dragon Age had such marketing before release XD I picked it up in 2011 or so and I absolutely love the game and don't understand why they would try to portray it as an action game. DA:O was absolutely awesome the way it is!

That's exactly what they want. They want you brain to get frustrated so that you click on the ad to prove you can do better. I caught myself thinking those thoughts once and -- luckily -- stopped myself in time. It's the same thing with facebook posts going "name a word other than xylophone that start with x, I bet you can't". Those I call boomer magnets.

Speaking of mobile game adds. Anyone remeber that ridiculous Game of War commercial with Kate Upton during the Super Bowl 😂. I'm not even sure it showed any part of the game at all. That's been a while, but that was so funny.

A slightly misleading trailer actually got me to discover my favorite game series and genre lol. One of the fallout New Vegas trailers just looked like a straight up shooter, set in post apocalyptic Vegas. I didn’t know anything about RPGs at the time. So when I got my hands on it I was SO lost and confused. I had no idea why i had to talk to everyone for so long and do a bunch of running around lol. But once I got the hang of it and got sucked in to the story I was hooked forever. I’ve played every Fallout game now. And I’m a huge RPG nerd in general. Thanks slightly misleading marketing!!! 🎉

I love how every one bags on cp2077 it wasn't nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Played it launch day on pc and had no glitches or bugs outside floating trash bags. Great game on launch day I loved it. Just like anthem was another great game, it had pc performance issues but was fun to play.

Diablo 3 cinematic trailer was the one that got me. I had no introduction to the franchise previously, so when I saw the trailer I was so pumped. Then I saw Diablo game play and it wasn't anything how I pictured it being haha.

The funny thing about lying mobile game ads like all the fake game modes that Evony or Garden Scapes promoted, is that it did spawn a new mobile game market. As in new games with their ads starting showing the fake trailer of Evony, and then saying that their game is just like that fake ad. Some of those have become popular due to offering that mode you been teased for ages and could not find.

Gotta say I was shocked to not see No Man’s Sky sitting at the top spot, though those mobile game trailers, really unsolicited ads, are so bad. I don’t know the number of times I’ve seen that same “lava or water” puzzle that looks pretty cool, and I’ve yet to see a game have that in it.

Bruh I still remember one video game trailer when I was KZbin had bits from Omori, blood, Pokémon monsters, creepy ass music. But when you go download that game it’s nothing like what you see in the trailers lol

It's weird how my personal experience with games often differs so much from the general consensus. For instance Cyberpunk 2077, I played the game at launch, it had performance issues, but I never experienced a single bug greater than like some dead NPC physics glitches and the few car pathing ones. I saw the videos, so I know they definitely existed, but not for me. Same with the Jedi games. I played both at launch, and I heard so much about how much of a buggy mess they were, but I never encountered a single one. Then there are a few games that I will apparently be the only person on the entire internet getting a game-breaking bug and literally no one else anywhere has had the same crash code as me.

Didn't Sweet Baby Inc work on TLOU 2? Considering a hallmark of their narrative consultation is a protagonist abruptly acting uncharacteristically, I wouldn't be surprised. Joel walking like a lamb to the slaughter was a slap in the face for a protagonist who was battle hardened beyond most other video game anti-heroes.

I think some of the trailers for Expeditions: A MudRunnter Game eluded to a lot more depth. As well, I do realize it is in early access, KSP2. That first trailer that came out. I expected next gen graphics and physics. No so much. Feels like 2016.

Despite its flaws, I don't think The Last of Us 2's Jesse/Joel trailer should pass as false advertising. It needed to protect the narrative and, even so, it got ruined by the leaks .

I remember at that time I was still holding on to a bare hope for that scene of Joel even after he's clearly 6 feet under (because I thought there was no way they remove the scene). And they were just coming by replacing Joel with a side character that I don't even care about or have any connection to, it's just... Dang it, I'm still hurt by that nasty lie 😂😂

Examples might include the anti-mobile game game you shared in this video, I recall there was an MMO designed to showcase the absurdity of P2W mechanics that came out a few years back... Surely there are other good examples!

I have been playing Cyberpunk 2077 from the beginning and I really love playing it. There were a few small bugs at the beginning, but I don't think they were anything serious. Love the gameplay and the story. I think the part about building weapons is very complicated and you can collect far too much "crap". But I see it as a kind of futuristic GTA. I'm not disappointed with the gameplay compared to the trailer. The game was very hyped up and thought it was a shame people experienced so many bugs. But I was not disappointed when I finally got to play it.

I saw a trailer for some mobile game (can’t remember the name) but the video they showed was straight up Nier Automata lol. I couldn’t believe it, and the ad was right on KZbin. I wish I I could remember its name. It was insane though lol.

Cyber punk was supposed to be driven by choices the player makes. There are not many choices at all. The website gave in depth descriptions of all these faction. You cant join any. They said repeatedly it wasn't GTA in the future and it very much is even after the major updates. We got lied to and then they polished shit up and people act like they added anything they said it would have other then vehicle combat

Before game trailers were even a thing, a lot of deceptive advertising existed in the form of "bullshots", which were touched up screenshots used in advertisements to make a game look better than it really was, or in the worst cases, they were completely fabricated. A close cousin was when a game released for multiple platforms would often show the best version on the box, so. for example, the box for the Commodore 64 version would feature screenshots from the superior Amiga version.
