I spoke to a Vampire: The Masquerade Dev a couple of years ago and he kind of felt that Activision screwed them on the game. The reason the game was released in such a buggy, clearly unfinished state was that Activision wanted to release it at the same time as Half-Life 2 so they could publicise that it also ran on the Source engine (which was also part of the problem) Then when the game flopped they turned around and said "What did you expect? It released the same day as Half-Life 2".

Also for Vampire: The Masquerades free battle royale flopped because of the insane bugs like your gun not shooting or reloading and they kept it in the game without patches for weeks, killed their entire 30,000 steam players/ 80k+ psn player count. And then they were hiring ambassadors on twitch to showcase the game and got into some racial controversy with the main developer of the Bloodhunt Battle Royale, game is barely holding on today , couldve been the next biggest battle royale

@@nonpondo_ the game had mad potential, had apex type movement but better and more fluid, shooting mechanics were nice when they worked, the graphics were sick too, and the mix of powers with gunplay made it a dope game, i think it definitely had potential to be big just how Naraka is now, but that wave done passed now

Prey is one of my top 5 games of all time. That game is a masterpiece. It does take a little bit to get into it but once the game flips everything upside down on you the game grabs you and pulls you in and doesn’t let go. Great story, great environments, tense gameplay - I’m very surprised Prey didn’t sell more. It’s an amazing game that more people should play and if you haven’t played it yet you’re totally missing out.

Prey, in my opinion, was a love letter to System Shock 2. If you have ever played it and then played Prey you can see a lot of the same beats in environmental storytelling. I loved Prey and the only reason I haven't played it as much as SS2 is because SS2 has been out for 20 more years.

yeah I count it in as one of my favourite games as well it didn't have anything extraordinary (which is probably the cause for it not being noticed) it was simply well made game with interesting setting and story in games and movies, there are some that make you go WOW and years later you remember that there was something like that but you don't feel like watching/playing it again (you are already accustomed to this WOW effect) and there are some that you really enjoyed but you don't really remember why and nostalgia hits hardest with these ones

I used to work in a target electronics dept for years and I can tell you when it comes to the first Mario and rabbids games success came down to the fact that it was often on sale for $15-20 and parents/grandparents not knowing it's not a traditional mario game bought it up for their kids instead of mario odyssey that was always at $60 and never on sale. I'm 56 years old and can honestly say I've been a gamer since I was about 10 with the very first arcade games. I've never stopped playing so I've seen a lot from the first home computers and consoles to VR. Enslaved is one of the most memorable games i have played in my life across all platforms and genres. the evolving story and relationship between monkey and Tripp, is so involving. the voice acting is so on point and the story Arc gripping. I think it was ahead of its time. as a teen I LOVED the crazy Japanese TV show Monkey Magic, so was already versed in the legend of the monkey King. although the show and the game bear little resemblance. a crying shame it didn't get a sequel, would have been an instant buy for me. If there's a game that needs a high quality reboot, it's Enslaved. I think the scene is ripe for it, got to be a sure thing if it's done as thoughtfully and thoroughly as the original was.

Enslaved was one of my favorite games when it came out. Such a fun adventure and I really loved the characters and the futuristic take on an age old allegory. Prey is definitely on my list of games to play but I feel for Arkane who begged to name it something else, but I feel like it’s assumed relation to the 2006 game of the same title is why it flopped. Prey (2006) WAS a heavy action FPS and, while they were both sci-fi, functioned nothing like Arkane’s vision for their project. Awesome list as always, love the perspective and context you give for gaming history!

As someone who absolutely loved my time with both The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2, I'll always be saddened by just how little recognition Shinji Mikami got from making such fantastic horror titles! Classic RE4 definitely had a lot of influences for these games (obviously basing on its main creative lead/head alone)... and even the remake of RE4 honestly takes a whole lotta cues from the mechanics in The Evil Within games. And not saying that's a bad thing at all. I just wish more people could have seen the potential of The Evil Within as another survival horror franchise worthy of competing alongside the likes of Resident Evil. Part of me feels like both games came out before this current era where people are just so thirsty for survival horror games that actually have mechanical depth and challenging difficulty.

I think its because re7 and tew2 both came out in the same year which people got captivated alot by compared to tew2 since re7 took a new turn by not just returning the series bwck to its horror roots but changing the formula for a new by bringing into first person whereas tew2 just solely improves on just the general mechanics of the first game to make it match the time aesthetics. Overall, both games were and still are amazing standards in the horror genre and i do agree with the fact that tew2 is a brilliant sequel despite under selling, i do wish it was more well known and i also wish tango games comes together with an idea for a 3rd game.

Blur was a fantastic game. I worked in retail at the time and if I remember rightly it released certainly in the UK within weeks of another great racing game called Split/Second. This was a similar arcade racer where you could use the environment to give you an advantage. At the end of the day there's only so much money to spend on games so customers ultimately had to choose one or the other.

I think one of the main reasons Vampire: the Masquerade Bloodlines failed upon initial release is that it was horribly broken and buggy. The opening cinematic showing your 'turning' was out of sync and missing several key animations/effects, and there were game breaking bugs that would corrupt save files, result in endless dialogue loops, etc. It got reasonably good reviews but the average player experience was extremely frustrating. It became a cult hit because underneath all of that was a very good story, excellent voice acting, and interesting game mechanics, and the community worked to patch that game for literally ten years. These days by some magic you can buy a patched version that has the unofficial community patch in it, and isn't really what the game looked like at launch (but it's what Troika wanted it to look like). They usually have it on sale for very cheap, highly recommend it to those who've never played it.

Gravity Rush 2 was such a big upgrade from the first installment it blew me away! The setting, all of the explorable areas and collectibles you could find by shifting gravity accompanied by the beautiful soundtrack and amazing cell shaded graphics all made for a very nostalgic feeling game but one that stood out on its own as a force to be reckoned with… or so I thought :( Really hope by some divine powers we’ll get a sequel someday.

I remember I got Gravity Rush 1 when it was a free game back when Vita was pretty young. There wasn't anything specifically stand out on Vita yet and I wasn't in the mood to play the playstation games I already owned from PS3. So I decided to go "Why not? Its not costing me money," and I remember getting so engrossed in it and was upset that it was over so quickly because I wanted MOAR. I was stunned that it was getting a sequel though I admit I haven't gotten around to playing it just yet despite it sitting in my library forever but it is a heartbreak it didn't sell well.

Gravity Rush 2 was amazing. Overall, its an open world game that stands on its own and there really is no other game to compare it to. The gravity power is unique. The world setting was unique(at the time). The story was unique(at the time too) and the soundtrack was awesome. And the combat was great even to today's standards. I just think that releasing it on playstation and locking it to the console was the only reason why it didn't do well. They didn't promote it much and when they did, it was mostly about the ability to use the Vita and playstation's motion controls which was not actually needed to play and it was much easier without it. So they screwed the game over by focusing on self-promoting Playstation features instead of the game itself.

@@mariopot789 well the interesting thing is that the control scheme isnt that novel. It just works and the movement in the game is great! Other games you can easily get stuck on a pebble on the ground or some slightly uneven floor stopping you instantly on your tracks and breaks your immersion but in GR you rarely get that. The movement is pretty clean and "fluid". At first, the gravity power controls throws you off but you get used to it quickly and pretty soon your soaring across the world and finding hidden side story missions.

Sunset’s issues might have also been heightened by the poor launch of the XboxOne. Prey has a big backstory behind the game. The original Prey was a fairly early 360 game that was a bit of a cult classic. A sequel was announced and as more information came out it was highly ambitious. It was supposed to come out 3-4 years (maybe even more) before the second Prey finally released but the ambitiousness of the project kept causing problems and delays. They eventually scrapped the game and said they weren’t going to make another. Then almost out of nowhere, probably because of Dishonored success, the IP was handed to Arkane and they fairly quickly released the newest Prey. Which, while great, is pretty different from the original and VERY different from the planned sequel. All of that probably contributed to the lower sales.

I've heard a pretty different story around the development of Prey 2 (I'd suggest watching Civvie11's video about it) there was a lot of backstabbing that went on with that whole situation. Also I'd say Sunset Overdrive's biggest failing is taking a beloved studio that only released on PlayStation for most of their existence and having them make an Xbox exclusive in a time where people were superrrrrrrrr pissed at Xbox for wanting always on DRM physical copy games that are tied to the system they're first played on (so no game sharing or resale) and were pushing really hard for Xbox to be a normie device with lots of casual games and a focus on TV shows and their insistence on making the Connect a required attachment that you have to buy and always have hooked up. People seem to forget what a hot mess Xbox was during the Xbox 1s launch but it was far more than just the lack of exclusives.

Definitely for me the best game that flopped was Lemnis Gate. No game has ever bent my mind more. A turn based, time travel, first person shooter, strategy game, it’s impossible to even describe to people how it works but it is an absolute beauty of a game. I just remember after playing it I would be stuck thinking in the games logic and I wouldn’t think of time as linear in my normal life. I think it’s a game that really helps expand the way you strategize about things in real life. I wish it had gotten enough attention and had a better matchmaking system to make sure you had comparative skill levels in a match but alas it just never was able to get a big enough population for the game to actually stick. I think Number 9, The Evil Within 2 kind of shows the difficulty with determining actual sales figures when companies have very little incentive to disclose specific digital sales. EW2 looks tot have sold about 1.5M copies on Steam alone, it also sold 43K copies on PS4 in Japan in a few days, being the 3rd best selling game, so it did okay. A comparison is Evil Within 1 was released in 2014 and only 2% of it's sales were digital. The difference between 2014 and 2017 when it comes to digital sales might as well be 100 years.

I enjoyed the Evil Within but the reality is they are not the best. Very Twin Peaks surreal which makes it difficult to explain or understand the story, lots of jumping between timelines and twisted imagined worlds it's hard to know what is going on, confusing even when playing. The game also starts incredibly difficult and forces you into stealthy careful play, which only alleviates after many upgrades and new weapons to your character throughout the game. Finally it's just very brutal and gross out in it's horror, most people prefer a bit more sanitised or action hero feeling. Horror games just don't sell well, Resident Evil is an anomaly.

@andrewshandle
@andrewshandle Жыл бұрын
@@IISuzakuII I have no idea, but given that all their peak traffic was the first two weeks it was released, it looks like most were full retail price, but it's not the point. When the first game was released only 2% of the sales were digital (which is incredibly low even for 2014), when the second was released in 2017, 79% of games sold were digital across the entire industry, so not having sale figures that include digital is just speculation. For example, if 75% of the sales were digital (not a crazy number), those 211K copies sold its first week becomes 844K which matches the original. I'm not arguing that the game was a financial success, just that we don't know how poorly it sold. Given we haven't seen a third game, it fair to surmise that it didn't make much (if any) profit.

You sometimes get games like that. Star Control 2 was not a success on release but was a slow-burn throughout the 1990s (even as PCs got gud). Then it got released for, um, free. And now every gen-xer has played the thing by now.

Yeah but like always, the company only cared about how much profit they made, not the impact the game actually had. They could have had one of the greatest series of all time in my opinion. First half good. Ending good. The middle is terrible, Piggsy is a terrible character, a hideous pervert we're supposed to like "because he kinda looks and behave like a typical loved character" but the guy's character design is very bad and his behaviour is cringe as hell, he's almost an hentai character who suddenly drops into the game - also, since he appears, the game environments becomes made of junk and grey / ugly green areas mostly...the charm is mostly gone for a good half of the game. I thought previous Heavenly Sword and later DmC were not perfect but much, much, much more solid than Odyssey to the West, which was half likeable, half "meh / cringe / ugly / boring / souless".

Gravity Rush 2 was pretty good. I loved flying to other islands. I think it was just a bit too open, lacking a little direction and a slightly limited scope story - but really cool to play for a while. The perfect game for a demo, to let people taste it’s coolness.

Split/Second is my favorite racing game. It only sold 86k in the 1st 12 days according to google. On ur 1st playthrough of the campaign, every race is an intense and epic experience. The Map Change Events were the most genious idea i have have ever seen in a racing game! One second ur in a normal race, and the next u have building collapsing around u. The adrenalline u get from barely out running the map change is unparraleled to any other racing game. And then for the rest of the the laps, u have to take the new path as the old one is destroyed. When u move to Online play, and learn the maps there is no better feeling than a perfectly timed bomb drop or map change that wipes out half the opponents while u take the lead. Or make a crane lift a path someone is heading down, causing them to fall into the water as u make a sharp turn and take the other path. Or in the same path, have the crane lift the path AS u get to the platform, prevent the opponent riding ur tail to fall as u make it safely to the other side. The control u had over the map in this game was crazy! and this was back in 2010. Imagine what could be done with the current development technology! I just think the game released ahead of its time. ppl were more into slow RPGs back then. Now-a-days with everyone looking for the next dopamine hit, a Remake or sequal would probably sell extrememly well. But it was made by a Disney developer, so I doubt we will ever see a Remake or sequal with Disney only caring about established IPs.

I didn't even hear of Prey when it first came out. It came with a Dishonored bundle I purchased on Steam. It sat dormant in my library for a long time. As someone who ranks both Pillars of Eternity games amongst their favorites, I can see how Pillars 2 didnt do so well, being that it isn't as easy to jump into narratively due to it being a direct sequel to a game that had very dense lore to begin with. Crpgs can be the sort of genre that a lot of people pick up out of interest, but sees a lot of retired playthroughs and I think that rings very true for that series.

Well tbf the reason why we didn't get any Sunset Overdrive sequel is because Sony acquired Insomniac. Though they did publish the game, Microsoft never owned the rights to the Sunset Overdrive IP, Insomniac owned it themselves. Prior to being acquired by Sony, Insomniac did say that they wanted to make a Sunset Overdrive sequel after doing Spiderman, but the acquisition basically killed any chance of that happening. If Sunset Overdrive ever does come back, it's because Sony would have to greenlit since they own the IP now.

So weird seeing System Shock 2 and bloodlines on this list. They both had instrumental mechanics that pushed forward shooting rpgs to what we have today. System shock man. My childhood was trying to get a navy man to the end with hacking and door slicing. Bloodlines introduced multiple ways to finish quests whether through dialogue or skills or just murder hobos until your attacked by slayers These games literally redefined a whole genre from doom, quake, duke nukem and brought us into stealth based shooter rpgs.

When talking about Deadfire vs. Kingmaker/Original Sin 2, the biggest issue to me was that Deadfire was real-time on launch while the other two were either turn-based or had that as an option. They eventually implemented it, but it was worse than Kingmakers dual mode system. As you had to choose Turn-based or real-time at the beginning of Deadfire (locking it in) rather than switching between the two on the fly like Kingmaker.

Bethesda really did Prey Dirty. Both the original and the one by Arcane. The original Prey was released in 2006, was a big success commercially, rave reviews, fans were clamouring for a sequel. Bethesda bought the rights to the IP and just kinda sat on it. When Arcane came along with a great looking game in development Bethesda said, "You have to use the name "Prey"." When this new Prey was announced and had nothing to do with the original, it immediately made a lot of gamers furious.

Interesting thing about the developers, they Pillars 2 was put on that one crowd funding site that you could also buy shares in games rather then just give them money. Since Pillar 2 never made a profit people who owned shares lost money but the developers decided to give shareholders a cut of the DLC money even though they were only obligated to give a portion of the base game sales.
