@@lutzaby1997 SquareEnix is a company that doesn't try to innovate anymore. Even Final Fantasy is a generic action game. Kingdom Hearts, Valkyrie Profile, etc... all generic action games. It would be one thing if SquareEnix knew how to make good action games, but they make the most middle of the road games that for the most part are painfully easy.

@@rdrouynriv All of the veterans left of got pozzed. Nomura was never meant to be so high up in the company for example, but he did because he was one of the few who stuck around and played ball with the money people. Both Sony and Square are too tied up in appealing to western interests now and have too many deals with western capital and western brands, even working with western devs. thats how you end up with crap like forespoken or the latest flops from Square enix. The next dragon quest will be a generic action game too btw, they already announced it.

really shows how down game devs have gone and are nowhere close to what they once were. Nowadays innovation is coming from Indie makers like wtf is that, it was unheard of for in the 90s and 2000's indie devs. Man they made so many good games during the ps1 era Im disappointed I didnt try out so many of these gems in my magical youth days.

I lived through these days and it's pretty awesome to see all these games laid out in chronological order. It really helps to clarify and contextualize just how wild and experimental the PS1 era was. Sadly, I doubt we'll ever have that kind of "wild frontier" feel again. The industry has calcified into something much more mercenary and calculated in recent years. I still love a lot of modern games, but I truly miss being able to buy a game based on the publisher and be confident that it was going to be quality.

parasite eve, xenogears and dino crisis are three games i would love to see in remake form. Sadly it won't happen or wouldn't be handled with care, Xenogears most likely is outright impossible because of licensing issues and Xenosaga existing. They have never even re-release Xenogears in any way for any platform, there's no way of playing it currently other than on psx or emulating.

Fun fact: Dewprism was actually made as a spiritual successor to Brave Fencer Musashi (before Samurai Legend). The lead designer even put some easter eggs in there related to Musashi's armor pieces which were actually just junk. Dewprism was also supposed to get its own Manga series but instead they ended up going with Negima.

Seeing all these amazing games in a row really makes me want to go play them, several of these I didn't know much about like Tobal, Bushido Blade, Cyborg, and Racing Lagoon, I need to also give these a try at some point.

@Clancy I got a large in in the "classic" style. I've bought a few shirts from them and they're pretty good. Neck is a little tight, but a different style might fix that. Not sure if the shirts we get in Aus are made by the same people as overseas, but the patterns have lasted a lot of washes and low heat tumble drying. Only problem I've found is that the stitching on the bottom hem of the shirt can come loose, but it hasn't really bothered me.

The Brave Fencer Musashi soundtrack is fantastic, and in context it's even better. It's super cool how leitmotifs weave their way into your brain over the course of the game, so that by the time you reach the final dungeon's gauntlet of enemies between the last few bosses, when the BGM (appropriately titled "Midair Giant Playground Battle") kicks in the phrase of the main theme that's been present since the first playable section, it feels triumphant and totally earned. Tsuyoshi Sekito still works with Square, regularly contributing to the Kingdom Hearts series; listening to Black Powder from BbS side-by-side with Musashi, it's funny how his characteristic style is still present even with higher fidelity samples - you can almost be sure a song is his by the use of sleigh bells as a flourish when some other instruments drop out for a phrase. I'm not smart enough about music to put it into words, but he has a style, and it's very good. What's curious to me is that one of the illustrators for the game, Koji Matsuoka (illustrator alongside Tetsuya Nomura - looking through the key art, it's pretty easy to tell which were done by Nomura, so the rest are presumably Matsuoka, and it seems like he might have also been character designer and illustrated the in-game cut-in pictures when you absorb enemy powers), seems to have disappeared entirely out of the industry. He illustrated for Musashi, some PC-98 games, and seemingly nothing else since. If I'm wrong about this, and he's still out there, please let me know. The Chocobo subseries is great, and I sort of hope they take another crack at it since the switch port of the wii sequel seems to not have made a huge impact, but who knows.

NES, SNES, and PS1 are the golden era of gaming and the happiest time of my life, I don't have 3 hours right now but I'm going to give this a watch at some point. The PS1 changed my life, and made me realize what a game could be. It's sad that my parents refused to let me pursue game design, but that's a story for another day. Maybe this video will help me remember what could have been. To quote Papa Jeff, don't just see the world for what it is, dare to dream about what it could be.

Your asessment of Final Fantasy IX really hits the nail on the head for me, it's 100% spot on and exactly the reason why I consider it the very best Final Fantasy to this day, with a very close Final Fantasy VIII being second. It's brimming with detail and gameplay and you can just see, feel and maybe even smell how much love the developers have poured into this very best iteration of Final Fantasy. It also in my opinion contains the very best scene of any Final Fantasy ever, when somebody who had absolutely no clue what Final Fantasy is would ask me to describe it to them with one single scene, then I'd start up this very sequence and tell him or her: THAT is Final Fantasy. And what scene that is? Only 4 words: "You Are Not Alone"

Seeing all those Final Fantasy ports in the video was quite a throwback, considering that this was how I've kind of... played through the first nine FF games, via PS1 Classic compatibility on PSP (with a brief detour to the FFIII PSP remake, that is). And I just had to pause during Soukaigi and go listen to the Quake track again. So catchy. le nerd moment: getting to FFIX's Pandemonium and realizing that it literally was FFII's Pandemonium but slowed down was like being gifred forbidden musical knowledge

Great recap! 50 year old woman here and big gaming fan that’s owned every PlayStation console. Parasite eve 1 and 2, I adored!!! I disagree with your opinion on parasite eve 2. To me …parasite Eve II WAS A first of it’s kind. It was 4 discs and although no voice overs, it was a rare game that took me almost a year to complete, and extremely challenging. You really had to collect items wisely and personally at the time it came out ; some of the most advanced graphics and sound effects I had ever seen and heard. I also learned about mitochondrial DNA! I was so obsessed I played every moment I could. Such an advanced story line that I truly loved, creepy hard beasts to fight and a game where you really had to plan your strategy and master your arsenal. No internet for cheats either at the time so man…. many a time I would have to restart a battle over and over and over. I will never forget hearing a person speak (albeit briefly) in a cutscene where you enter a zoo of sorts “welcome to neoark”. I remember being so blown away at how realistic hearing a persons voice made it. Lol. Perhaps it’s a game you could only appreciate at the time and era it was released. Seriously though…. Parasite eve holds a place in my heart of being in my top 10 RPGS…. Along with final fantasy series of course!!!

Seeing the ratio of releases from Japan, to North America, to Europe made me even more depressed 😭So many outstanding games, so little time to bring em' over here I guess. I'd genuinely love to know the thought process behind some of these not making it over here. Incredible effort and video mate. Particularly loved how you covered FF7 - such an important game that still holds up in my honest opinion. It helped make JRPGs viable worldwide, not just in Japan/US! And for my money, the Materia system has never been bettered! What's your favourite game out of the lot? Mine would be a tough call between FF6, FF7 and Parasite Eve.
@SeanSeanson
@SeanSeanson Жыл бұрын
I think the simple answer is that Square didn't have a publishing arm in Europe for most of the 90's, so the few games we did get early one where ones Sony wanted to directly bring over like Tobal / FF7 etc. that and the process of translating them for an EU market was a ton of work! It's something we often take for granted nowadays. Oh tough call... any of the three mainline FF games could be my favourite depending on what day you asked me, but out of all the games I played in this video I'd say Parasite Eve, Racing Lagoon and Front Mission 3 are the ones I want to go back and finish!

There was a good part of that though, is Japan's charm comes from appealing to their own domestic audiences I think, especially in the 90s, when you got some kind of import, and especially before the digital age where you can hold it in your hand, it was something that words couldn't describe, just a special moment in a kids life 🤔
