Harry potter and the chamber of secrets pc is a great mitroidvania It might not have a Huge map but every time you learn a new spell to go to a place you couldn't teach before

@matt Says all the better games that have released since Prime 3/Order of Ecclesia. Why aren't they Asylum-likes or Hollow-Knight-likes when those games handle exploration and progression better than Nintendo or Konami's series? It's a bad habit to use 'game x-like' as a genre label anyway; the fact Dark Souls is on this list proves how silly it is.

I would rank many of the older Resident Evil games as very metroidvania-like in there design and probably the last one to really go back to that was Resident Evil Revelations which is one of my favourite entries because it combined the more action based gameplay of the games from 4 and after and being in a cramped location where you had to go back and forward exploring. I would love for Rocksteady Studios to go back and make another more confined game like Arkham Asylum but it would have to be with another character now as I feel that now they have went open world with Batman related games it would be hard to go back.

I think is simpler see them as "Game that progress by Area". So just looking at maps game, if is divived by area and you can go back anad forth, you can tell if is a metroidvania or not

I really enjoyed Darksiders 3. It was different but beyond the hack-n-slash combat DS 2 was also different than DS 1 as well (I always thought DS 1 was a lot more Zelda-ish). That's one of the things I've liked about the series, each game is similar but very different at the same time.

Could someone please explain to me what defines a "Soulslike" game as it's own genre separate from Metroidvanias or other action games? Because it seems like the defining trait is "hard trial and error game", and that doesn't seem like that's a good definition to me.

Basically what you mentionZ is a going that is really tough. You have to learn enemy patterns, know when to roll and strike. People find them fun because you they are in fact challenging.

Usually in soulslikes the way areas connect is due to shortcuts or one use items. Classic Metroidvanias use abilites to gate of areas, abilities that ususally new special attacks or movement options.

I think I would be remiss if I didn't at least suggest, Alien Isolation. Not only did it have this kind of "metrovania" exploration but it's tense and a case of risk/reward to backtrack is frequent as The Xenomorph hunts you down for a midnight snack.

Actually, if you want a more true to form Metroidvania game that has all the prerequisites of one, and uses the Alien IP, you should play Aliens: Infestation for the Nintendo DS. That game is definitely a full Metroidvania game (and one I wanna play one of these days).

I feel like "3D Metroidvania' is just a semi-open world or open-world game, considering the player is forever traversing back and forth in those genres anyway.

So its old school doom a metroidvania? Theres plenty of levels that are non linear and you need to back track and find secerts. Or even resident evil games

Prey is an Immersive Sim (like System Shock), not a Metroidvania. God of War and Control are not Metroidvanias. They try to be in the sense that you do get new abilities, but those are only used to access optional areas. The main critical path is linear and the next area only opens when the story says so. Same problem Alien Isolation had, actually, and also games like Psychonauts. Dark Souls is not a Metroidvania. There's no utility gating, and that's the main criteria for a game to qualify.

I feel like, if God of War is a metroidvania, then the first darksiders is too. they both fit and dont fit into the genre in the same ways. if one is, they both are and this video already declared one isnt, so shouldn't count the other either.

None of them are Metroidvainia in any sort of way. There is literally no reason to go back to an area after you've left it, you don't leave until you've done everything in that area and everything you need is in that area.

The 1st two are more like Zelda with a big overworld and dongeouns throughout it. The way bosses work in D1 is also very Zelda like with using the dongeoun item to beat it

Was there another version of Fallen Order I missed? Why do these channels keep describing it as an "exploration" game? All you did on each planet was start on one end and work you way to the other end, then go back to the ship the same way you came in. There were a few little secrets off to the side but it was nothing like exploration. Your average Doom game has 20x as much exploration as Fallen Order.

uhhhh, did anyone at the office play Dark Souls? In New Londo Ruins, the item you need to attack the ghosts is at the beginning of the area called Transient Curse. In Tomb of The Giants, you find a lantern right at the start as well. If you are a sorcerer you don't even need the lantern. DS is not a 3D metroidvania.
