About Komodo Dragons: They have venom and their mouths are incredibly dirty so if the venom doesn't get you, the bacteria will.
@JustSomeGuywithEpicGrasses Жыл бұрын
They're amazing and terrifying creatures.

That's actually a myth. To quote the researcher Bryan Fry: "After they are done feeding, they will spend 10 to 15 minutes lip-licking and rubbing their head in the leaves to clean their mouth ... Unlike people have been led to believe, they do not have chunks of rotting flesh from their meals on their teeth, cultivating bacteria." Further, studies of their saliva have found the bacteria that is there to be similar to what is found in the mouths of other large carnivorous animals {i.e. it's not a clean mouth but not unusually dirty either). The idea that Komodo Dragons intentionally have prey die of sepsis is based on misunderstandings of things like water buffalo getting their wounds infected by getting in dirty water, and eventually being fed on by other dragons that likely didn't even cause the wounds. Typically a animal attacked by a komodo dragon that doesn't escape will be dead within a half hour from blood loss, venom (possibly), being torn up, etc.

I love Casual Geographic's explanation as to why the Hippo is not in Africa's Big 5. Africa's Big 5 refers to the 5 most dangerous things you can hunt in Africa. Reason Hippo is not in there...is because no one's dumb enough to try hunting one. XD
@edim108 Жыл бұрын
You can try, but unless you have something that'll put down an elephant your chances aren't that great, even if you manage to find one before it finds out you're in his hood... Same reason crocodiles aren't on that list despite being responsible for over 3k deaths a year in Africa- no one is dumb enough to go out looking for them, unless it's a specific one

That and anyone who actively tries usually gets got for it

I think it's important to understand that the vast majority of predatory animals lack the means to safely kill their prey before eating it, so they kill it by eating it. Heck, it may well be quicker than waiting for it to bleed out. Further, such prey is often in a state of shock, so how much it is suffering is debatable (heck, I've heard it's not unusual for people attacked by a large predator to not even really feel pain from the attack until later, as adrenaline, shock and so on tend to numb that). Not to mention how well animals deal with pain in general (I once saw a dog get a quarter of his ear bitten off by another dog and he was barely bothered, acted more like it itched than hurt).

There was an I shouldn't be alive episode with a chimp that got out of a military base and proceeded to attack tourists in a vehicle. The four guys got separated and I think only two made it out. One guy ran off by himself and got "dismantled" by the whole group of them.The original target of the escaped one only lost a few limbs because his friend didn't abandon him to his demise. They are still friends to this day.
