After having issues with our rv project it wasn't looking like it was going to be ready in time for a summer road trip with the family so while we were waiting on our new computer in the mail we decided to do a 10 our road trip to buy a really clean survivor grandma car 92 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser station wagon. Now you guys know I love my station wagons but the reason why I wanted this specific model was because my great grandpa took my grandparents and my dad on a trip out west in the summer of 1976 in a 72 Olds Vista Cruiser station wagon that he also purchased a week before they left. Is this wagon going to be god enough to buy? Will is make it on the 5 hour road trip home? Can it make it all the way across America on a 7000 mile road trip? Let's find out.

(Mind, I haven't seen the whole video yet. You may be talking about when they just arrived, but I have a point to make:) If you've never driven in an old Station Wagon before, you might be surprised just how *uncomfortable* modern cars often are. This old beast can let you drive, sinking in to the car seats. The suspension is soft enough that when you get out of the car 2 hours later, you feel like you had a refreshing nap. I've driven a 1990 Grand Marquis Wagon long enough to learn that. Also, this car has a wide wheelbase, and the wheels are 15s, so the *tire* absorbs more road feel. And try the steering - it's very easy to turn. Too easy if you're not used to it, actually. You can literally turn the steering wheel with your pinky finger, _and that was common even back to the 60s._

I know nothing about cars, I accidentally watched an episode on last year RV trip and can honestly say the time your family spends together is irreplaceable keep up the positive words and showing them how to deal with set backs. Todays world doesn’t show the negative for fear of offending someone you embrace the set backs as a family and come through stronger on the other side.

Nice ride Josh… Yup looks like you scored on that one. The cruise control issue might be as simple as brake pedal sensor. Try holding your foot under the brake pedal and hit some bumps to see if it cuts out. Worth a try. Best of luck with the car and you vacation.

The holder above the glove box is for holding maps. Before GPS they had these square papers that told you how to get places so when traveling cross country people would put what ever map of whatever state they were driving threw in that holder so it could be pulled out and opened up fast to find your destination. Also keep up the great content! Me and my son love the channel.👍

Sweet ride! I owned a 1967 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser. I loved that car. It had the high compression 330 CI 320HP 4 barrel. It was definitely a sleeper. Years later I got my hands on a 1978 high performance Oldsmobile Rocket 350 with stainless steel exhaust herders. I pulled it from a 1978 Oldsmobile 98 & it cost me $100.00. I dragged it150 feet over rocks at a u-pull-it on an engine hoist. I dropped it into a 54" stretched Cadillac Limo. Yup, another sleeper. Watching you brings back all those memories.

I have just stumbled upon your channel. You are amazing, what you are doing is amazing, what you are doing for your kids is even more amazing. I say this from personal experience. I was born in 1995 and I am obsessed with anything 50/60's. We bought a beat up old '67 Triumph Herald in 2011 as my first car at the age of 16 and we restored everything on that vehicle. My dad taught me everything I know about cars and from fitting new pistons and valves to cutting, shutting, welding, filling and finishing bodywork. It inspired my love for the things that others my age would find quirky; spending my weekends putting back together a vehicle 3 times my age whilst my mates were out smoking and drinking. I went on from that to go into engineering and get a 1st class honors degree, from those days in the garage to walking across the podium in my cap and gown, i owe it all to my dad and the love and the things he taught me. I can tell you that those memories you are making with your kids will live with them forever. I watched your other videos with your daughter and her VW type 1 and it came flooding back to me 12 years later - the excitement of getting the car home, that look on her face when you got it to turn over for the first time is the look my dad said he remembers the most on me and the look that made it all worth it. This year I purchased another 1967 Triumph Herald, now being 28 and all independent, because I want to do it again and give it a go myself 10 years after we finished the last one. When I look at my 'new' Herald its a little reminder how much my parents did for me; money is the least valuable thing I think a child could ever get. Keep doing what you are doing, I have the absolute most respect for you and your family! You've earned yourself the more sincere sub I have ever given - much love from across the pond in the U.K. :)

Love the new wagon! In my state of California, when you purchase a vehicle from a private party, you have ten days to get it registered in your name , so getting a ticket is no worry within that time period, so long as you can provide documentation of the date purchased, to the officer that pulled you over.

Everyone needs a good station Wagon! I bought my 1957 Oldsmobile Fiesta in 1985 that was sitting in a hay barn since 1969. It had 87,299 miles on it I replaced all the brakes, break lines, shocks and flushed the engine cooling system and re-cored the radiator and heater core. Because it was parked because of an overheating problem. it now has 109,500 miles and runs like new. I will never sell it. You take care of the old Olds wagon and it will serve you well for many years to come.

So glad to hear of your Plan B. You are so correct to buy a Station Wagon for a road trip. Although my stable is full of Ford Crown Victoria wagons an Oldsmobile should do the job quite well. I took my 1987 on an extended road trip to Florida in 1991 via Wilmington, North Carolina to visit U.S.S. North Carolina BB - 55 a World War # 2 battleship. I got 22 mpg with the 87 and it performed flawlessly even in heavy Florida rain storms. I took my 1991 Crown Victoria to Norfolk, Virginia to visit U.S.S. Wisconsin BB - 64 with a side stop in Camden, New Jersey to visit U.S.S. New Jersey BB - 62 in 2002 and got 23 mpg with that one. Most every year since 1988 I have taken one or the other of my wagons towing my 18'-0" Starcraft boat to the Lakes Region of New Hampshire for vacation. Unfortunately no boat trip this year due to a back injury. However I look forward to videos of you and the family on your road trip. May God bless you on your journey.

There was five of us little brats tagging along with mom & dad on all our vacations from the 50's through the 70's. We were a Chevrolet family with our first factory new car being a 1955 Chevrolet Station Wagon! As soon as they made a nine passenger one with the seat facing the rear, we had to get one (in the early 60's). From then on all the way through the 70's we always had the nine passenger model. We all would fight over that facing backwards rear seat! I truly loved those cars! Sure brings back great memories seeing the Sleeperdude Family in one. And you got the grandaddy fanciest one of all. The Buick Roadmaster Vista Cruiser!!!! That was just a little to steep for our blue collar family style. But I sure remember drooling over the thought of having one. Of course, we did have an Uncle that had one! Didn't everybody!? This is just Too Cool!

Chrysler Corp called that the astrodome gauge package. Electroluminescent (whatever that means). The first car I ever got to work on when I was 14 was a 62 Chrysler 300 sport. Made it run, and that's as far as I got. But it was pretty rusty. Floors, trunk, brake lines.....all gone. Alot of the dual carb setups were 413ci instead of the 383, single carb setup like mine. After I Made it run, I traded it. and used the money to buy a Caprice classic. But I still wish I had it back.

Great video. Nice wagon. When i was a teen, my family took vacations in a 76 Ford Grand Torino station wagon, copper colored. This was back in the early 70's,so it was legal to ride in the back unrestrained. My dad pulled a 24 foot camper up and down Pikes Peak. The hitch broke on the way down. It did hold until he found a welder. So much fun.

I am Soooo, Happy to see a RV video. Im invested in the series. I watch all your videos multiple times. It was a total bummer when the computer decided to cause issues. I was really hoping to see this years trip in the camper since you all put so much work and time into it. However I'm glad you were able to find another meaningful way to travel this year in the wagon. Im looking forward to watching the upcoming videos. I know you will get the Mini Winnie going soon and i hope we get to see you travel somewhere in it like burnout competitions or something. Safe travels and positive vibes to the family. Have fun! 🎉

Had a 12 foot rowboat that we used to fit in the back of my dad's Ford Galaxy Wagon. Riding in the back seat shots remind me of me and my brother riding in the bakc facing backwards to visit my Grandpa just about every weekend, Our nextdoor neighbor had everything covered in clear plasitc in her living room, including rug runners...

I learned to drive in a ‘64 Vistacruiser. My Dad loved to drive fast in the mountain roads. My Mom didn’t like for the A/C to be on very high because her knees got cold. The two kids in the back seat got sick because of the windy roads and heat. Did like the view from the roof windows.

I practiced for my drivers test on a worn out 67 Ford Ranch Wagon. It had slack steering and brakes so it was tricky to drive, but it was at least power steering and brakes. My younger siblings had to muscle around a manual steering Maverick.

Our 1970 Ford Country Squire, (family truckster) had 2 jump seats in the back facing each other. I like this rear facing much better. I would sit there to get away from my 2 sisters, who where both younger than me. It was tight for a 15 year old. Go Ralphie!

This brings so many family memories. We bought a new '92 Buick Century wagon as our family car when our twins were 7 years old. Couldn't afford the full size wagon land yacht. The kids lived in the rear facing third seat. On the first trip we took I realized that all the truckers were honking from the kids doing the same thing Ralphy and Wa-Wa were doing. That wagon hauled so many kids on youth group trips, school sports trips, etc. They all wanted to ride in "Drew and Lydia's dad's car" because of the third seat. That car hauled each of our kids back and forth to college beginning in 2003. Upon their college graduations in 2007 (and no more tuition payments!), we replaced it with a new 2007 NIssan Altima "mommy and daddy" car. Ended up giving the old wagon to a fireman friend.

Hey now, that is one sweet new ride for the trip! I'm not from the US, but I'm a fan of American car culture, and thus your channel, and I have always been a fan of the station wagon - it's a very distinctly American car form factor. It's particularly cool to see that you got a wagon that has reached the zenith of it's development (read: near perfected). I have to say that the space that opens up when you lay down the seats is astonishing. I really hope the vacation goes well, can't wait for updates! The fact that you got the whole family to wear the same shirt for the trip, particularly the teenager, speaks volumes about how great parents you both are. Most other teens would no doubt not do anything that might associate themselves with their parents, but Wawa seems justly proud to be part of the whole family. All of the kids are super cool and super smart as well 🙂 Oh well, next week's episode will answer the burning questions: Who will be in the rear seat; what trouble will they get up to; and, how long before the car needs its first adjustment (I don't believe there will any major issues as it's a very solidly built unit, but it will need some things tightened up I'm sure). All the best to all of you! Edit: Just came back to show you the perfect camper for your future trips. See the first one in this video, it's completely insane 😄: kzbin.info/www/bejne/maDNkoqdmMtgbaM

Nice looking wagon! That was a good find! When I was a kid, our family car was a 1960 Pontiac Catalina safari wagon. That thing was huge! It did not have the backward seat, but that didn't stop us from riding in the back. I still remember the road trips from Florida to Maine, plenty of room for mom, dad, four of us kids, and two Italian greyhounds! I wish they still made station wagons instead of suv's.

Hey, about your air suspension... I heard the compressor running a lot...take a wheel Schrader valve and some fuel line hose clamps with you on your trip. If the air bags are OK and the leak is in the lines or compressor you can cut the line close to the air bags (or shocks), cut the rubber off the Schrader valve and clamp it into the line. Then you can manually put air in to make the suspension work. I've done this twice. Gets you home. Enjoy your trip!

Went for many a trip in the new 65 Chevy station wagon when we were kids, all over Texas. Pretty amazing. No phones, paper maps and basically my dad and mom knew where we were going because they looked at maps before we left and in the motel when we got there. Then while we(the kids) were in the pool and they were having a cocktail sitting by the pool, watching us. Just total trust in the car and that we would get there. Great memories. Thanks for sharing. Going down the road in my Merry Olds. It's such a thrill sending chills up my toes. Love the wagon, my first car was a 1965 Ford Galaxy County Squirer with a 289 engine. I was seventeen and I drove it all summer until the engine died. That was back in 1973. That old wagon had over 100,000 miles and I only paid $100.00 for it. Back then when a car had that many miles it was only a matter of time before the engine would die. I took it to the Junkyard and got $30.00 for it. Man those where the days having fun with your friends and not a care in the world.
