This is what it's like as a Black man walking 10 hours in China.
Living outside your home country isn't quite easy, but living in China is a little different. And especially that my skin color is different, I get a lot of reaction from Chinese on a daily basis.
This is Day 8 of my 10 hours of walking in China challenge.

The conversation you had with the little girl shows real humans are when they meet someone that looks different. She said “ you are so black “ she made an obvious observation and she was curious and you were so cool to educate her. In that exchange you have shaped her view of black people in a positive way and possibility for the rest of her life. Much respect to you bro. You are inspiring and courageous 🎉👍🏾

I am Chinese, but in Mandarin saying "black" or "white" does mean "tan" and "pale" as well. It doesn't necessarily mean skin color, or race, but also skin tone. For example, Chinese people will call other Chinese people "black" or "white" to say things like, "You look tan" or "You look pale." There are actually no words in Mandarin to describe being tan or pale.😅

I am a Canadian Chinese man, retired Social Worker; my best friend at work is a Black Jamaican woman. When I was 8 years old, I had the same reaction as with that young girl meeting you the first time. It was pure innocence and curiosity. Communication and cultural exchange are the best way to build relationships and develop friendships. Keep up the great work. Don’t feel discouraged when you experience negative encounters, your beautiful smile and positive attitude and energy are the best qualities that will help build a strong relationship and friendship! In ancient times, there were African Decedents Chinese in parts of China. We are all one big family, God Bless🙏 (Resources: from Black Jade Journal in KZbin.)👏❤️from 🇨🇦👨🏻‍🏫👏

In China, its not common for the Chinese to see any Black person in person. They may have seen them in TV, but not in real life. So they'd feel surprised, especially among the young kids. Similarly, Blacks in Africa are surprised if they first time ever encounter a White person.

99.9% of Chinese people say that black people are black without any malice, so don’t feel sad. Chinese Han people say they are yellow, and we don’t feel racist when others call us yellow. Chinese people seldom come into contact with black people, and they are very conservative about unknown people. More communication can enhance understanding and friendship. Wish you a Happy New Year.

That is true. And the sense of what is "personal" or "sensitive" is much narrower among the Chinese (maybe other Asians too). For eg. they think nothing of information like age, weight, illnesses, marital status. People may feel annoyed with the person for being a busybody, but not because it is a subject that must not be talked about. People who has had too much of the sun, they say "you are so black. where have you been?' People who might have had some illnesses, they say "you are pale as a ghost. you need to eat more". Overweight people might get described as "fatty" and that is a common nickname for them. There's even a patriotic song that reminds the chinese people "whereever you go, don't ever forget our black hair and yellow faces". Most things are fine if people don't get overly sensitive and feel that every sentence or statement has racist overtones to it,

@@kriztoppa He's saying YOU don't know what they're thinking. It's a fact that this dude is different -- he's black in China, which makes him different -- and people almost universally will be curious when they encounter such a stark difference, especially in a country where foreigners aren't as prevalent. Even the lady in the beginning who shunned him might just not wanted to be on a video, as many people don't, so there's no need to jump to the "racism" conclusion, like every fucking moron Liberal in America.

So, i would humbly like to recommand u to interact more with them in ur videos and show us more about their culture. You are a sweet, kind soul, and a very good explorer/diplomat. It's true; there are few black people in China, and I see a lot of heads turn! Your Chinese, and your politeness are great conversational starters. I got lost in the iron market in Port O'Prince, Haiti. Trust me, I was the only blonde-haired little white girl there. LOL The crowd conversed, and they then found the only other two white people there and got us together! The market crowd was HUGE and dense, the fact that they found us and returned us to each other so efficiently was awesome. Wish I could have understood Haitian French. (I carried a pencil and pad of paper and drew what I wanted) I LOVED visiting Haiti, eating the food and talking to people. Never felt the least bit nervous or in danger (this was 40 years ago, not recently) I wept to hear the iron market was destroyed in the last earthquake.....not so much for the destroyed palace, ahem. Such kind, happy people, such poverty, such art...the music of steel drums....it opened my eyes as a child. I LIKE "other" places! Thank you for sharing!!!

When you greet the older Chinese folks, you can ask "你吃饱了吗". If you greet them by saying "hello " , they may not understand. Or you can greet them with "你好".
@pizzatime9565
@pizzatime9565 Жыл бұрын
Correction: "你吃了吗?" means "have you eaten?", and ""你吃饱了吗?" means "are you full?". They are very different. My personal advice though - even though "Have you eaten?" is known to be the more common and less formal way of saying hello, the tone and the almost formulaic responses are EXTREMELY hard to master, as it kind of has a culture tie to the last generation Beijing natives. For example, depends on the time of the day or the place you meet, you might have to say "I haven't yet." or "I'm about to." (If you say you already had lunch at 11AM, you are probably lying.) At which point, the other person would invite you to have lunch with them as a courtesy. But almost all the time, you should politely refuse and thank them for offering because the other person was probably not serious about the proposition to begin with. So now you can probably see why most young people would avoid doing this. (This informal way of greetings are ironically too formal at situations.) "你好", "hi", "hello" would be the the better greetings in almost 99% of the time, quick and simple.

Fantastic idea you had to film a vid like this! It's sweet that the little girl starts to sing the "ABCD song“ after you asked if she studies English at school. Must be the only thing she knows of English. The woman who refused to talk to you, I think probably it's because she doesn't speak English, not out of bad intention, and when you switched to Chinese she felt ashamed because she didn't answer you. Let me here put a word for this kind of silence: very often it's not done with malice, it's really different the understanding of the SILENCE in China. Trust me that I am a Chinese who used to live in Europe and every time I go back in China I also get hurt by some silence of my own people only because I'm used with the western mentality somehow. But with time i understand more it's really about the way of interpretation, to understand the real intention behind it. Sometime is about avoid to make mistakes, but if interpreted in a bad way can look kinda impolite and I feel it. Wish you good life in China.

Quite interesting. I have been wondering if China is a racial society, cause people see few foreigners here and not much experience or knowledge about it. Admire your courage!

I think sometimes black folks are really sensitive about their skin and culture which is understandable due to the history, I'm sorry for this, but if you are in China, don't be scared or think too much of it, because China never had this racial problem, people who were looking at you, they are just curious because obviously you are different from them, if it's a white people they will look at him the same way, so take it easy and try to learn the local language and culture, try to be one of them, and then you will be able to enjoy your life there, otherwise it's just too hard thinking everybody is starting at you as you are black. Good luck to you!

@@dexulosi9866 Yes, sometimes it's different,people's views towards black people are also changing because of what's happening in the world and USA,but to be honest you can't change everyone's thoughts, and forget about all of the differences, now you are in a different culture and world, don't be too alert and connect everything with your color. Work hard and learn the local language and culture and history, be one of them not a stranger. Only this way, you will be able to have a happy, meaningful and fruitful life.

If not only do the history but it's also due to current events. We deal with racism and discrimination everywhere we go. We don't know if people mistreat us because they are jealous or racist. We don't know But if we get treated differently compared to people who aren't black who are within the same establishment then you will hear us say, "Is it because I'm black"? So, yeah, we are quite sensitive. Did you know that at @12:38, non black people do this to black people often , and especially in New York? I followed two black guys who were walking on the sidewalk and videotaped the reactions that non black people have and every last one of them did what this girl did. Or how some chinese speakers will pretend not to understand the Mandarin black people use or they will blatantly ignore them ? Or how some chinese people will be irritable and short with black people in their restaurants but smile and speak politely to Caucasians? It hurts our feelings, you know ? Of course we will be sensitive . I remember before the pandemic, people seemed friendlier or maybe I was naive since I hadn't experienced racism but once or twice, until the pandemic hit. But I agree with learning the language and culture. I find that SOME Chinese speakers are SURPRISED AND AMUSED by foreigners learning their language. I've met good people and even consider some ladies whom I've know for about three years as my Other family. They were always so kind to me no matter how I looked or dressed and they always treated me well. I wanted to donate a couple $1000k to their business but when I visited last week, I found that it was closed down. 😥😢 I think good people are hard to find in any race. It's just that blacks have to deal with racism more than Asians. Asians use to deal with racism in America too

@@nicoleraheem1195 I am truly sorry for black people that have suffered so much in the history and nowadays, it's so bad, and me as a Chinese living in Australia have also experienced discrimination and racism. But I also know that other people's thoughts towards Chinese are very much shaped by their media and governments, I can't really change anything about it, it just doesn't worth it if I only can change 1 or 2 persons mind on the street, if you do want to do such things, you have to prepare to get hurt millions of times before things get better. Chinese know that only when our country is powerful then they will start to respect you and treat you equal,that's why black folks still has a long way to go, cuz people's thoughts towards them are mostly shaped by America. You can't blame people outside of your country care less about you, because to be honest people only care about their own business, they can pretend to care but eventually you have to fight for your own life and race and country. Before that, take care and try to experience and explore more of other wonderful things in the world.

I believe wholeheartedly that perceived hate is much more than the actual hate in this world. Sure there are a few that hate with all their being, others hate because thats what they know but most hate isn't hate it's just the person perceiving and assuming that they're hated. When I went to school in my small mountain town we only had one black person in the school. The first time I saw her I had a crush on her. I asked one of the adults why her skin was black and I got scolded. The adults thought I was being mean because she was different. If those adults would've just answered my question I would have known the answer and if they had taken a second to stop and think maybe they wouldn't have gone right to hate. The adults perception made it "Hate". I actually had a crush on the girl but I was made to feel like a monster for asking the question "Why is her skin black?".
