It's so interesting to hear peoples' vastly different experiences with plants! I have a large philodendron tortum myself and I accidentally ripped off its ENTIRE root system when trying to repot it a couple months ago. I ended up just sticking the whole plant in a vase to reroot and it didn't even bat an eye. Gave me one large leave and two flowers back to back, no yellowing, no crisping, no nothing. On the other hand, I couldn't keep an anthurium clarinervium happy even if my life depended on it.

I feel what you're saying about African violets about then not being that exciting. I got one because my mum used to love growing them, but she always struggled to keep them alive. I bought her one for her birthday once and told her it came with a lifetime replacement warranty. It ended up dying and I never replaced it. My mum past away nearly 7 years ago. In the past 18 months I've readily got into house plants. I ended up getting an African violet. It's not mine though, it's my mums and I'm just looking after it for her. I... don't find then hard to grow? Put them in the right medium, and fertilize then regularly with an African Violet fertiliser, and bottom water like your said and they seem happy. My one plant has given me 3 more, with 4 more pups and leaf cuttings currently in my prop box

Hi Memo, really nice jumper - it suits you. Alocasia reginula Black Velvet: I recommend trying its hybrid Ninja instead - it´s blacker, velvet, embossed thicker leaves, has cooler veination, and generally it is stocky and seems to get bigger leaves. It´s one of my favourite plants because it´s so pretty (grows well in pon and a self-watering pot). Peperomia: I have been struggling for 3 years with Peperomia argyreia (watermelon), water propagated cuttings growing in pon. I spent excessive amount of hours trying to solve what it wants to thrive. It has been my most difficult & frustrating plant. It´s alive but doesn´t look great, although it has good light, fertiliser etc. Then I had an idea when a leaf broke off - I propagated it in water, planted it in Soil Ninja´s Ficus mix, put it on a northern windowsill and a miracle happened - it is growing in it like weeds - it looks amazing, grows fast, finally gets big leaves that don´t crack. I think the soil mix is what makes the difference - also maybe it needs mycorrhizal fungi in order to grow well. It did taught me a good lesson on importance of the right substrate - I swear that it makes all the difference. Anyhow, in spring, I´m going to chop my old peperomia to pieces and put them all in Soil Ninja´s Ficus mix - it works wonders :-)

I find it so interesting to hear others opinion on what they like or what they do well/struggle with! Thank you for sharing. I purchased a mature Audrey Ficus tree in July. I put it directly in my South-Eastern window and it gets a lot of direct sun. It ended up growing like 7 new leaves and a new branch. I also have a ludisia discolor which I actually adore and it's growing well! I agree with you on the Amydrium Medium being a no go. It did grow fairly quickly for me, but the tips won't stop browning and I can't figure out why!!

It was a really fun video Memo! I find it so silly that you have to (and most plantubers) disclaim that this is your opinion and please people don't be offended if I bash a plant you like. It's just plants, people need to chill we all have different preferences and growing conditions why be offended if I say I don't like some plant? So weird.

Cissus discolor: I recently saw it in a botanical garden, where it was climbing and crawling on the walls of the greenhouse, its pipes and everywhere it could like a weed. It was gigantic and mesmerizingly beautiful. I wish I could grow it like this too - it is such a spectacular plant

A. Silver is a tad slower than green form. I have about 7 different plants, 3 on cedar planks, 4 on Thiccly poles. They need constant strapping, quite snug, of the stem after each new leaf is pushed out to the pole or plank. It must be pretty snug, I use plastic wrap which looks terrible but it works and it pushes out beautifully fenestrated leaves. Sometimes the internodal spacing is about 4 inches, but try this. I does require constant attention and you can't miss strapping after every new leaf is pushed out.

I’ve been lucky with the one selaginella I’ve tried in my terrarium. It’s the Ruby Red one (so pretty). I just barely stuck the end in the substrate so it’s really just surviving off of the humidity I guess. It seems to be happy but it grows slowly. 🤷‍♀️ And there are no critters in there to trample it. 😂

I'm with you on Peperomias. They're just so small and kind of don't go anywhere. They're not going to climb or spread out into a big mat. They just always look like a cute little picture of a potplant. I think they're cool if you imagine them as minatures ... like, if you had a doll house, a Peperomia in it would look like a huge Alocasia, Anthurium or Philodendron ... quite cool in a terrarium too, but there are usually other plants in terraria that I get more excited about. African violets have pretty much the same neat shape too, so I can see why you're underwhelmed by both. I think their velvety leaves are kind of cute, but yeah, there are other plants I'd go for. With you on Ludisia too. Macodes is amazing ... you need it in a terrarium with good air flow though. The petola used to sprawl all around my terrarium. I also had selaginella in there and it was perfectly happy and I think it's an air movement issue.
@Houseplantygoodness
@Houseplantygoodness 2 ай бұрын
You nailed it-they’re adorable but always feel like they’re stuck in “miniature mode”! 😂 Macodes sprawling in a terrarium sounds stunning, though. Maybe I need to give Selaginella another try with better airflow! 🌿

Wow. I bought seeds of Ficus benghalensis around 2011. So many seedlings. I kept 1 and got huge in my apartment. Summers out on the fire escape in full sun. Such an adaptable plant. I then sold them as I collected seeds of other banyans in Mexico and Florida that now excite me more, like Ficus obtusifolia, which grows even faster and puts out more leaves. Ficus are underrated.

Haha, when I saw the title I immediately thought brandtianum! Great video. Agree with most, just not amydrium medium (not tried the other varieties of amydrium) - agree it's slow, at least initially. Mine took about a year from 1 leaf snip to put out it's first leaf and then to realise it had a moss pole (that believe me I strapped it to tight to force it's node against the moss), but this year it's made 5 leaves, all progressively bigger. I changed nothing in its care, in fact it's a feral plant for me. I'd add spider plants to my list (just find them boring) and possibly paraiso verde - easy to grow but takes up far too much space and I've only managed to get 1 variegated leaf.

This was so versatile! Things you didn’t like Things that don’t work But still enthusiasm, very enjoyable 🌸 I have grown a cissus discolor, I purchased a started plant not one of those large ones, it grew quite easily, stopped growing in the winter and picked right back up in spring. I gave it to a friend and it grows well for her as well. They propagated easily in moss for me. Things I wont grow (again) (for now): - medium to large Alocasia… I can keep them alive… but not in the places where I want to put them and I cannot adapt those places to their liking and I refuse to have an “Alocasia tent” 😅 I am keeping 3 smaller ones in a cabinet but I am not buying more of them. - peperomias… just don’t do it for me, not the right vibe in my house (though maybe Ill get that fuzzy one someday) - African violets… I am with you… NO 😂. I do have an Episcia that I adore 🩷 - Large plants on stakes/mosspoles: my living room can only take about 3-4 of these and I don’t want them in other places in the house, they would be bumped into or otherwise in the way. So I have a few, but no more will enter the house (and a lot of them left the house to friends and family) - “rare” Scindapsus. There are still a few Scindapsi living in my house but in my opinion… If theres a splashy one and one or 2 different silver ones “you have them all” 😂 (I had about 10 of them at my Scindapsus peak). - Cane Begonia… they take up soooooo much space or have to be cut back soooooo often (and I don’t like binning cuttings, so they lead to sooooo many propagations) - anything finicky (except for some Hoyas): I look after my plants: water and feed them regularly, repot when needed, keep them pest free…. But I just cannot be bothered by plants that want a specific circumstance that requires a lot of equipment to keep it alive, I say NO 😅 (though the Hoyas did get a tent which is why they are the exception) - Succulents…. my mom has many adorable succulents 😍, but they are not meant for my house (old house, high humidity) I think thats it 🤔😊
@Houseplantygoodness
@Houseplantygoodness 2 ай бұрын
Thank you! 😊 Loved hearing your thoughts-especially on Scindapsus. “If there’s a splashy one, you have them all” is SO relatable. 😂 Also, no shame in refusing an Alocasia tent-it’s a lifestyle choice! 😅🌿

@ hahaha they entered my house as cuttings…. Took forever to root and start growing…. I grew them out and realized I got bored with “the same plant everywhere” 😅 There are subtle differences though and I understand that people who like to collect can really appreciate those…. But for me… one or 2 (or 3) is enough… One hanging, one on a pole (it stays small so its not in the way)… wait, why do I have that third one again!? (I think it was to line a shelf but never got around to implementing it)

Hi, thanks for sharing the video. I have most of the plants you show in the video, I live in Florida. Begonias need to be kept moist at all times, as do African Violets, ground orchids, and Alocasias, except I mix in some soil with pebbles or sand and coconut fiber. I have had the climbing begonias for a year now, and they go dormant and then grow back every year. Keep this whole group of plants in a very bright spot, not in direct sunlight. Keep them in one spot at all times, do not move them.

A little black Alocasia sounds like the perfect cure for a little black heart. 🖤🌿 Good luck filling that spot in your collection! 😊

It surprised me that the monstera amydrium medium made the list. Mine is growing well (it's on a moss pole), though not quite as fast as my other monsteras. I consider myself a beginner planty person, so it always surprises me when the planty peeps I admire aren't having as much kuck with a specific plant as myself. I think I just assume you guys know more than me and therefore are like planty magicians that can grow anything super well 😅

I used to think the same about African violate until I came across these Russian and Ukrainian varieties. Big flowers that almost look like medium sized roses. My biggest flower from an African violate is as big as 3 inches wide. I also find the trailing varieties interesting as I could shape them into like a bonsai.

Oh, peperomia. I agree that it depends on the growing conditions, but they look way better on SM than in my home. I've owned Watermelon, Red Ripple, and Frost. The Watermelon is long gone, Red Ripple (2+ y.o. and looks like a garden weed in my care at this point) is almost on its way out to find a better home. Frost is the last peperomia standing, thanks to its unusual spiky blooms. Underwhelming and too fragile? Yes and yes for me as well.

Hello Memo, hearing you talk about the Ficus I immediately remembered "Little Shop Of Horrors" which I recently watched again. Have you ever tried.... I hope you know the movie or the play. Plants which I would not buy anymore: Some varigated plants which are absolutely not stable as Monstera Adansonii, M. Siltepecana, M. Karstenianum or Raphidophora Tetrasperma. Also Philodendron Burle Marx was a pain in.... (full green or full "white"). At least the last one grows very fast and you can cut it with a chainsaw and start it again. Because of their growth pattern I would also not buy again Philodendrons of the Erubescens type (Pink Lady, Red Anderson, Strawberry Shake and White Knight, Wizard, Princess....). Not recommendable P. Brandtianum. Or P. Melanochrisum (Gigas seems to grow better!) and P. Verrucosum. But at least the last one is so pretty that I just bought an "Amazon Sunset" again.These plants are tricky to grow. Perhaps the Verrucosum needs a little lower temperature at night? Keep on feeding your mealybugs! Gerd

Brandtianum grows nicely ut doesn't size up, not to bad because I dont have space for it if it does. I enjoy these types of videos because it sheds lights the vast variety of experiences we have in the hobby. Plus, we all have those plants we despise 🙄 For me the Pink Princess Philodendron: I have bought that plant at least 5 times (or more). I’ve bought cheap specimens, more expensive specimens, big, small, medium; it all resulted in the same disappointing experience. I’m simply done mentally and physically with the Pink Princess. I would much rather continue to struggle with my Alocasia Jacklyn and its spider mites. At least the Jacklyn is growing… alongside its spider mite friends but it’s growing. Lol The Pink Princess was just never rewarding: it was stagnant, grew distorted, horrible. Like, what does it want?! It’s tragic and a fraud, in my experience.

To be honest, there isn't a plant I met that I dislike. For me, it is more about the environment I live in. It is not conducive to certain plants thriving. I live in the desert end of California-dry as a bone. I also have limited space so it is not like I can just bring in "whatever" into my place. I don't bother with plants that require a lot of space. Philodendrons require a lot space as do anthuriums. Sometimes it's a matter of knowing which battles to take on. There is a certain Hoya... H. archboldiana that I tried twice. It is not an inexpensive plant to acquire, but I may try one more time... because flowers. It's the same reason I bother with orchids. That Alocasia black velvet, its more the look of velvet rather than the feel of velvet... Haha.. It is a small plant. This one I can keep and I do have one. I also like African violets I have 5 some of which produce ruffled blooms. I also have a Streptocarpus, another African violet relative. For that moss-like plant... it is related to moss, treat it like moss. Use distilled water. If you must use tap water get water conditioner, the same as used for keeping fish aquariums, to get rid of the chlorine in the water. Use fertilizer intended for the same.

It looks like you did not try to find an info from real African violets growers ( not KZbinrs)!!! The rules are easy. 1) It has a thread-thin roots. Therefore, the size of the pot can be only 1/3 of the diameter of the rosette. 2) the substrate is peat/perlite, nothing else. 3) You have to repot/ re-root it TWICE a year. 4) Bottom water or have it on a wick. 5)Pinch off the suckers between leaves. That's all. I had had about 300 varieties years ago. Now I have only about 35-40 really favorites.

Audrey, among 14 other types of my ficuses is the easiest. I grow it from a starter plant. Now it is too big, and I'm going to cut it. Due to our crazy seasonal room humidity, it grows long aerial roots (it is by the window). It's been on a fridge by the window and this spot is too dark for most of my other plants. Gives me 1 leaf in month or 1,5 months. Now I know that if I want to stop it somehow, I need to put it in semi hydro. It is in peat + perlite 60\40. It likes to get dry. It didn't get thrips (from 5-7 times). It had a bit of spider mites once. Have only 2 Peperomias left (from 6) both with very succulent leaves. I can read my Alocasias like a book, but can't read Peperomias somehow. My Black Velvet feels velvety, but it is still juvenile and not that black, just deep green. Before I forget. If you'll ever want to get another Alocasia try Puncak Barneoenis. It feels you may like the look of it, and it is forgiving one. I love the colour of Brandtianum but it gives me small small leaves only. I enjoyed this video a lot. Thank you!
