Interesting mix layering! I'm a chronic underwaterer and could not keep an alocasia happy until I started using self-watering pots. I use PON at the bottom, then a well draining but not too chunky potting mix to which I add water-retaining granules. It's been about a year now and they're doing well! Your Frydek is stunning!
@indoorplanthings10 ай бұрын
Amazing, what you're doing sounds like a similar concept to what I said in this video too! Alocasia's definitely thrive with more moisture 😁 Thank you 💖

What is in your potting mix??
@kylefisher48836 ай бұрын
I guess I'm confused on the pon. Do some people use all pond and no potting soil? Or is this the standard when it comes to pon?
@Dwynfal6 ай бұрын
@@kylefisher4883 I've seen people do it both ways but when I looked at the Lechuza website they specifically said to use PON and soil together. A lot of people I've seen using PON only had great results in small pots but struggled with larger ones. My guess is PON can only wick water up (even when using cotton wicks) up so far before gravity and evaporation win out.

I don’t use Moss layers, but I use Tree Fern and Peet Moss (100% Sphagnum Moss grinded up) mixed with bark, perlite and charcoal. I have repotted all my Alocasia’s into Naked Root Planters I actually have a video on it if your interested in seeing it. The only downfall I see is water sitting in these reservoirs to long bring mosquitoes 😮….so now I have to refill them every 2 days and only put in 1/2 inch of water so they have access to it and it then can dry out. Always something. All that said, I 100% agree with this video these plants and Anthurium want moisture.

These started showing up everywhere lately around here it seems. They must be very popular because Nova Scotia is pretty much on the opposite side of the earth and we have cold winters with nasty snow storms. I'm going to try one anyway. Thanks for your video and for being so attractive.😊

I have a poly almost 2 years has not lost one leaf. I use chunky soil moss on top. I water when top inch dry. I never let it dry out. Have a stingray 9 months given 6 new leaves. Lost none but cut off those oldest 4 because I didn’t like the leaves and will cut off 3 more when more leaves fill in. Same watering. Just got a silver dragon and want a Jacklyn and green dragon. Someday variegated Alocasia I will get

Hi there, great video and care tips for alocasias, thanks so for sharing. I recently discussed that my alocasias are doing well in semihydro set up. Have you ever grown them fully in inorganic media such as pon?
@indoorplanthings10 ай бұрын
Thank you! 🫶🏼 I have in the past, however I'm just not a huge fan of semi hydro and the method in this video is probably the closest I'll get to doing semi hydro haha I have heard alocasia's do fantastically in semi hydro though! I like to keep all my houseplants in generally the same media so they can be cared for the same. Keeps things easy when you have a lot of plants!

My biggest worry with this soil and watering system is fungus gnats. The soil will probably stay quite moist throughout the week. Do you ever have a gnat problem?
@indoorplanthings9 ай бұрын
I NEVER have them! Gnats are attracted to decaying matter, so if your root system is healthy and not having root rot you won't have a problem. The soil mixture you use for this method needs to be really chunky to allow drainage. The soil doesn't retain much water at all. Hence the need for a reservoir to keep some humidity throughout the week 🙂 I might have to do a video on gnats one day 🤔
@JaarongayАй бұрын
ok, so a chunky potting mix would not be applicable for this method of alocasia watering? What would you suggest as an alternative to my chunky. coco chips perlite worm casting and orchid bark mix? thank you love, beautiful plants!

How long would you wait after bringing a plant home to repot out of the nursery soil to your layered method?
@indoorplanthings8 ай бұрын
Id personally give it a few weeks or a month. It's a big shock for a plant to go from a nursery to your house. If the plant looks happy in your environment after that month then repot 🙂
