Bigdaddy: It has compression - about 40 psi at top dead center and then shoots up to 135 at ignition. It is a fully functional four stroke cycle engine. The big difference is that it has a "Low" compression ratio of about 3.5:1 and is fueled by illuminating gas rather than gasoline and ignition is by Hydrogen carrier flame rather than spark plug or ignitor - Wayne

Wayne, seems to me you had to crank a lot more this time... The pause at 5:00 reminds me of the one we get when mom discovers all of her garden hoses are missing and in the shop, lol... Nice job!!

I love your engine and how it backfires and scares the crud out of everybody. Awesome flame ignition engine though

It will start on propane, however it takes two people, one to rotate the engine and one to slowly adjust the gas valve - propane has a more exacting ratio with air than H2

Simply beautiful! It runs like a fine watch.

Hi Wayne, I was curious why you are not using the illuminating gas for the pilot? Will the illuminating gas also work for that? Did the engines originally use hydrogen for the pilot or? Also why do you think the propane gives more power? is from the CO or the slower flame speed? Thanks!

enjoyable and kinda relaxing to watch it work :)

The sliding valve, is it the air inflow valve? I presume it is 4 stroke engine but sounds like a 2stroke hit and miss engine. It could be the back fire.
@TheUberGopher7 жыл бұрын
Is the slide valve only for exhaust and a poppet for intake? Or vice versus? I love these old engines but even as a mechanic I need to have some of it explained to me. This is the first slide valve internal combustion engine I've heard of.
@wgrenning7 жыл бұрын
The slide valve controls air inlet, fuel inlet and ignition. Exhaust is through traditional poppet valve

Awesome engine!!! Why can't you start the engine on plain Propane?
@gregoffenback69109 жыл бұрын
Did you have the slide value and other hardware for restoration, or did you build it from scratch? It sounds like it must have been converted to electric ignition, and popet valves.
@wgrenning9 жыл бұрын
+Greg Offenback The complete slide valve system was machined off the engine around the turn of the century. For this restoration, all the slide valve components and cylinder head were made from scratch. It was a real challenge since there are no 10 HP engines of this type to copy

How does the flame get to the compressed charge to ignite it?

beautiful engine! i think slide valves are one of the most interesting types of engines. do you know what year the engine was built?
@wgrenning9 жыл бұрын
+JPMotorhead1993 This engine was built in either 1882 0r 1883
@JPMotorhead19939 жыл бұрын
wow that is a piece of history. If you don't mind me asking where did you find the engine?
@wgrenning9 жыл бұрын
+JPMotorhead1993 The engine is not owned by me. It was brought to my shop for restoration. It is believed to have been installed in a factory in Chicago where it powered an elevator. It was then converted to Natural gas and the entire slide valve system removed and installed in a factory in Hamilton Ohio around 1910. It was removed from that facility around 1974 by the curent owner.
