Arthur Treachers, Howard Johnson’s, Bonanza, Friendly’s, York Steak House, Sizzler, Ground Round and so many others were mainstays of my 70s and 80s childhood existence. Always a treat to go out to these places and eat with my grandma or my mom. Missed those times and certainly miss both my grandma and my mom. Wish every day I could go back and relive it over again.

What wonderful memories! Those places really defined the dining experience for many of us back then. It's heartwarming to hear how much you cherish those times with your grandma and mom. Those special outings leave a lasting impact, and it's natural to miss them dearly.

When I was in college, every Thursday night, a group would go to Authur Treachers. Years ago, driving through Boston, we stayed at Howard Johnson and walked to the restaurant. Oh, I loved Red Barn

On Lake Erie, near Cedar Point, there was an orange water ski ramp visible from the highway. My dad told us it was a sunken Howard Johnson's... and being little kids in the 70s, we believed him. Mmmm... fried clams and Swiss Chocolate Almond ice cream.

That sounds like such a vivid and nostalgic memory! The idea of a sunken Howard Johnson's and those specific treats must have been quite enchanting as a child. Do you have any other fond memories from around that time?

Nathan's is a Coney Island NY classic that is still around, although the quality is not the same after expansion.

Absolutely, I couldn't agree more! Nathan's is truly a legendary spot in Coney Island, NY, and it's fantastic that it's still around after all these years. While it's a bummer that the quality might not be exactly the same since expanding, there's no denying the nostalgic charm and iconic status that Nathan's holds. It's a place that brings back so many wonderful memories for so many people. Long live Nathan's! 🌭🌟

I remember the Ground Round as a little child. My mom would take me there for lunch. I was too young to know better but when I was done eating I would dump the plate on the floor. Looking back I feel so bad for the staff but apparently that's what I thought cause you threw the shells on the floor. 😂

Haha, sounds like you were just adding to the ambiance of the restaurant with your plate-dropping skills!

There are two Arthur Treacher’s in northeast Ohio, one closed for a couple years but reopened due to popularity. When I was in high school I used to order the family pack and eat the whole thing myself. It was that good.

The downfall of many fish and chips shops was......they switched from cod (good tasting) to pollock, considered by many to be inferior. A cost-cutting move with bad results.

In my home area, we had Burger Chef, Red Barn, Arthur Treachers and a couple Ground Round restaurants. And i have some…interesting…memories regarding Ground Round. First time i went to one was in 1975. Parents and i took a long camping trip through much of the west but going there took us up through Chicago. We got through around lunch time. I saw a sign for Ground Round and it advertised free peanuts. Managed to convince parents to go there. Lunch crowd was being treated to a ‘summer fashion show’ that was a bunch of women in bikinis. Another time, around ten years later, a friend and i went for the chicken wings. We ordered the hot. We had them taken back twice because they weren’t hot enough. After the second time, the manager showed up and set a fire extinguisher in the seat beside us.

It sounds like you have some unforgettable memories from those restaurants! From the unexpected bikini fashion show to the fiery chicken wing incident, it seems like Ground Round provided quite the experiences. What other memorable moments do you recall from dining out during those times?

YOU FAILED TO MENTION THAT BURGER CHEF CLOSED BECAUSE IT WAS PURCHASED BY “HARDEES” .. It Was THE ONLY BURGER ESTABLISHMENT TO HAVE A BAR - WHERE YOU DRESSED YOUR BURGER THE WAY YOU WANTED IT TO BE
@VintageandClassicTV
@VintageandClassicTV Ай бұрын
You're right! Burger Chef's acquisition by Hardee's did play a significant role in its closure. It's notable for its unique concept of letting customers dress their own burgers. Thanks for highlighting that aspect of its history!

@@VintageandClassicTV Yep… where I grew up the Burger Chef was remodeled and became Hardees …which is now gone as well.
