During my trip to Taipei, I bought my 4 month old shiba inu puppy about 10 years ago, I came back to Singapore first, and when she flew in here, she was lucky that she doesn’t need to be quarantined, I just drove to Singapore airlines house, picked her up and came home. Nevertheless I did filled up some documents at AVA centre, that’s all, no fuss!! And her chip was done in Taipei.

What amazes me about Singapore is the fact that its able to keep its rural areas fresh while maintaining first world development at the same time. Singapore is in the same league as Japan,South Korea and Taiwan as they are the only first world countries along with Cyprus and Isreal in a third world region.

U can get part-time helpers who dont stay with you. They charge by the hour. And our temperature are not always above 30 degrees. There are months where it drops to below 30 degrees (like last year)

I would like to remind people of the "family" topic. As long as you are married and you earn enough money, you will easily get the dependents pass. Earlier only the wife could be a dependent (Had friends where she was the expat and it was a challange for her husband to come along). Always consider what your partner will be doing in Singapore (it is very problematic if one just sits at home and waits for hubby to come back home - have a plan for your better half what he/she will be doing). Sometimes I told people - "you come as a single to Singapore and leave as a couple - or you come as a couple and leave as singles"

Hi, you had shared in one of your videos about getting your pet into Singapore. Want to learn more about the process, as in the nitty gritties about the rules. What tips would you give?

My vet is the one who looked up the protocol - its a fairly standard procedure. Takes about 5 months to complete and it has a window of about 3 months after that so book your departure accordingly (unlike me!). Certain races are also forbidden - pit bulls, Rottweilers, mastiffs - the usual suspects. The smaller the dog, the easier it is to find a flat that accepts them. Take good care of your furry friend!

If you don’t mind living in a small place, I’m sure you’ll find something! But CBD is by far the costliest neighbourhood to live in, so even s 1-bedroom flat is probably ridiculous, like 5k a month of higher... Nothing is ever far in Singapore, so you should probably look around Boena Vista for a quiet place just one or two MRT stops away, maybe Haji Lane if you are more the party type 😁 There certainly a lot of good options at about 3k / month or under outside CBD.

G'day mate. We are moving to Singapore from Sydney in couple of months. Much appreciated for all your videos, they are very helpful. You have mentioned a topic about the salary, what you consider a 'good' salary for a family of 4? Leaving in 3-bedroom condo, one kid in private school and another in day care (she is only 2 years old), no car. We were offered $20K SGD per month base, plus whatever bonus if it comes, but worry a bit if that's sufficient for a high quality life style?

Yeah mate, that should be enough! Daycare is COSTLY, but if you can manage to find a flat under 4k a month, you should be good!

@@SimonSaysCanada Cheers mate. Not sure about Canada but we live on the Central Coast, about 50km from Sydney and day care is $140 per day. Sydney is close to $200. Government subsidies around 30% if the spouse works or studies, so the fees here are very high. I've heard that in Singapore many opt for a nanny but being an Aussie that's not very appealing as the child losses opportunity to socialise, spent time outdoor, etc. Will sort out once we get there. Thanks for the tip on the price for the unit, might use the guy you suggested to help with the real estate.

Not all maids are treated badly by the employers,many employers are bullied by the maids too, everywhere else s the same,there's good and bad ppl. At least I treated my helpers as my younger sisters,eat and use the same things as us,slept in aircon room,respect each other,stay in contact even after they went home.

My partner and I are looking to move to Singapore (from Australia) but he is finding the market is not open to “westerners” and more so aimed at hiring local Singaporean’s since the peak of Covid. Did you transfer from one office to another or apply for a job externally?

I did transfer for one office to the other, and the business made it as easy as possible to get my employment pass and dependant passes. I would not recommend just moving here and figure it out - the government won,t let you anyways. You need to have a job lined-up before the move - preferably in an industry that still hires westeners - but your partner is right: they will always hire locals in priority (as they should) and employers have to justify why they are importing foreigners for any specific role. For me, it turns out there simply not a lot of experienced Singaporeans doing what I do. Some, but not a lot.

But just talking on my perspective as an aussie tourist (i guess you can say) who stayed for over a year in Singapore. There's gay bars, saunas, events, clubs, apps. If you are wanting to parade it around and start smooching in public (ive seen it) ppl will stare and will probably get a few disapproving looks but honestly if you don't shove it in peoples faces it's fine. Even with the cctv cameras around nothing happened...Anyway that was my perspective. Hopefully that law is repealed one day and i think eventually it will be. The youth are more understanding.

I can assure you that for LBGTQ people living closeted lives to not upset their family or close friends, section 377A is a very important bread-and-butter issue. Imagine a law discriminating against brown eyes - but it’s okay; it’s generally not enforced anymore. How much of a choice have you had for your dyes coloration, and therefore how much can you do to comply with the law,? Lucky for me, I’m straight and have blue eyes, so I should just worry about low taxes and garbage-collection issues? 😛

There is certainly some of that, yes. But listen - and this is definitely NOT a competition or a fact I am proud of - but white people’s racism versus all other skin colors has to be the negative gold-standard against which all other racism is measured... And when seen in that light, I find Singaporeans’ casual racism quite inoffensive, if a bit insensitive. Not sure it’s genuine racism either - it’s more a matter of nationality than it is about race or skin-tone. All that being said, F*CK racism in all its shapes and forms! One Love, Simon

My father is German and my mom Singaporean and as a kid Chinese Singaporeans will always say ang moh kou ( red hair Dog ) whenever he walked by .or Chinese uses slurs towards malays and Indians and vice versa. I speak 3 Chinese languages so for me it's ok and all this slurs is pretty normal actually. Not saying I have never used it cause even my mom would use it too towards Malays etc at times. To me it's pretty normal. But I was curious have it happen to you cause I haven't been back for 5 years now as I have been living in Germany for the last 13 years and Australia for 5 . Need to disagree with you on the Singapore local education system. It’s very good at producing kids who score high grades, but there is not enough focus on communication and presentation skills, emotional and social intelligence, critical thinking, questioning authority etc. It also produces kids who may be highly competent in some ways, but are sorely lacking in self-confidence. Vocational education is also not seen as a route to a normal middle class lifestyle, and is therefore not aspired to by most local families. In international schools in Singapore, this is an issue as well. For e.g. the Swiss, Dutch and German schools do not seem to offer viable paths for vocational education for expat children. For e.g. I have a Danish friend living in Singapore whose daughter wants to be a furniture carpenter. This is a perfectly respectable career choice in Denmark. She does very well academically, but would rather become a craftsman than an office worker like most of us. There is no avenue for this in Singapore, whether you are in the local or international system. She will need to return to Denmark to train....

Well, lumber jack or diary farmer are both perfectly acceptable trades in Canada (as is furniture carpentry), but with no applicability to the reality of Singapore, of course. No lumber trees, no pastures for cows. If my kids want to become either of these things, we / they’ll have to move somewhere where these trades are possible, and hopefully valued. For critical thinking, challenging authority, and communication skills, this may be true, but the Canadian system does not teach those skills either, so that’s where good parenting needs to come in, I guess! Challenging authority is not a thing in Asia in general, I find. Only happens in countries that have thrown-out monarchy and / or have had a couple revolutions of some kind!

@@SimonSaysCanada My point about vocational education applies also to trades that are relevant for Singapore (e.g. plumber, electrician). Most local families would not regard such careers highly. In Germany/Austria/Switzerland/Netherlands/Scandinavia/ Northern Italy vocational education (or apprenticeships) are a viable option. I worked at Siemens for 10 years, and found out that many of the German top management had not been to university, but had instead ‘come up through the ranks’, starting off as apprentices. The only thing I know about Canada is the ‘I’m a lumberjack’ sketch from Monty Python-not the most reliable source of information!😆

Hello Simon, great content, but have to point out on the last one - we are a conservative Asian nation. Our birth rate is also a critical issue. Also, I grew up (and I think many others as well) hearing this maxim, "So if so & so jumps down, you will also do the same is it?!" (you know when you grew up in a HDB flat...) Meaning to say, don't follow other people blindly.

Other then that the 377A law really is for nothing Nobody gets jailed for being gay and the law is never enforced. Maybe only when it comes to Minor offences below 16 years old and male prostitution cases. Private conducts and having a relationship is no problem here Given a very very conservative society it's hard for the govt to legalize it but i guess in the future the law would be gone as society changes.

I like your content and expressions of things. I only take exception about our laws and especially relate to lgbtq. We are generally helpful and tolerance, but we guard our laws jealously as they are there for good social reasons being a small multi racial, religious and cultural society. The reason we dislike some Westerners or other self centred liberals coming here trying to bring in or influence their "so called warp" human rights nonsense to try to change our people claiming progressive mindset but actually degressive in nature that many of us cannot tolerate. As guests to our country, we welcome you but don't try to interfere in our laws which have served us well since our nationhood. We cannot afford the mess of many western insanities seen today.

Hard disagreement on this one. This particular LBGTQ law isn’t yours to begin with - it’s Britain’s colonial penal code, which applied to all colonies. Most old colonies have shed this imperial penal code in favor of something that better represent their population. Singaporeans suffer under this law - I knoa a few closeted who were more confortable discussing their situation with a straight white Canadian then they were their families or Singaporean friends, which is terrible no matter what your values are. Being gay is no more a choice than having brown or green eyes, of as it applies to me, than losing your hair. Having 21rst Century laws against LBGTQ in a modern country is as wrong-headed as having laws against green eyes and bald heads. Note that it doesn’t affect me - I am not LBGTQ at all. But it affdcts a few of my Singaporean friends, and I can’t ignore it out of empathy for them. Singaporeans suffer under this law - it is up to Singaporean to fix this issue. Homophobia and intolerance belongs in the past, along with the rest of the British Empire.

The only legal way to have sex (even married couples) is "man on top". Any other position is ILLEGAL. It's never been enforced, but it's still there on the books. Just FYI and laughter.
