The people sleeping everywhere part... they’re mostly construction workers and are not Singaporeans. Majority are from Bangladesh and China. We import them for ridiculously cheap labour (modern day slavery, if you ask me). These guys work seriously long hours and under harsh conditions for close to nothing. Try working under the hot Singapore sun the entire morning. You’ll be so tired by the afternoon you’ll fall asleep easily during your breaks. Poor guys. I’d get them a couple of bottles of ice cold water or coke if I see them working in the hot sun.

The hygiene plate that you see has A B C and D. The passing grade is C, in fact most of them are C. It's perfectly ok to eat from a stall rated C, don't worry about it. There are are regulated by the government. Singapore can be cheap, you just have to know where to find the bargains. For expats, I strongly suggest that you make more Singaporean friends, otherwise you'll be paying more than you should for everything. Singapore DOES rains a lot, because we are a tropical country. It only rains a lot more during Mid Nov to early January. That's the monsoon season. The rest of the months is seriously hot. Our fashion can be quite dull, due to the humid weather. If you can find a balance between tee shirts and shorts and still look loud, go ahead. That will be cool. Singapore is indeed tiny, but you need to know where to look for fun. Our definition of fun is quite different, it's not like we can go on a Long drive along the countryside or mountain climbing. For example, we can go to island hopping. St John's island, Pulau Hantu, Pulau Ubin, Coney Island. You need the locals to be your guide. Lastly, those mappers are foreign labourers. They have to wake up real early for work and it's a laborious work, so normally we do see them nap on the floor. Don't eat at restaurants, if you truly want the Singapore foodie experience, Hawkers are the way to go

well said bro. just read Stomp.SG comments or the Straits Times comments on social media to see how repugnant these SIngaporeans are where it comes to attitudes towards foreigners. Singaporeans are too lazy to clean their own dingy little HDBs, so they pay some 3rd world maid 600 bucks per MONTH to clean up after themselves. They like the feeling of power it gives them, to literally own a 3rd world slave. Who the hell needs a maid in a 40 square metre apartment in the 21st century? Then they cry about how hard life is because they have to work extra hours to pay for their maid. Here's an idea: clean your own fucking laundry, rasie your own kids, and save $600 per month! GENIUS ! Then the locals apply for jobs, demand a high salary (despite having zero experience) and then CRY that the foreigners are taking all the work because nobody wants to pay a local art graduate 6000 SGD per month to do a shitty job working on a construction site. As for the highly skilled jobs (which the foreigners are allegedly taking) , it's because locals do badly in school, they study some shit course at uni (such as Chinese Cultural Studies) and then wonder why they can't get a job in finance or as a Project Manager. Again- blame the foreigners. And when it comes to local universities: just read the comments on STOMP. They blame the PAP for giving opportunities to foreign students, and cry that we are taking places from them. Here's the truth of the matter: Singaporean students are given a higher scholarship and bursary than foreigners, and they are spoon fed at every step of the way, including receiving benefits for extra training. And what do they do with all these benefits? I'll tell you. IN my department at NTU (engineering) , do you know how many Singaporean students there were? ZERO. Most were Indian and Chinese. Do you know how many were in my friend's department (Humanities)? About 90% were local. What does this tell us? That locals HAVE the same opportunities, but they flush them down the toilet for an easy degree, then they blame the foreigners for taking the opportunities from them. They are the worst people in the world. The country is built by foreign blood and toil. These people couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery.

@tonymoly87396 жыл бұрын
Some fun facts here. Singapore is a tropical country, hence we have high levels of humidity with the scorching dry season for most months of the year and the wet monsoon season on the last quarter of the year. Most Singaporeans have an umbrella in their bags when they're out. It's common sense to wear good proper shoes or non-slip thongs when walking about in the streets regardless of rain or shine. Food in Singapore can be really affordable if you eat at air-conditioned foodcourts in shopping malls and the many hawker centres and coffee shops scattered across the island. Food and merchandise prices in Orchard Road shopping belts and prime or touristy areas are hefty due to the sky-high rentals there. Cooked food in Singapore is generally safe for consumption as our government's NEA has strict regulations on food preparation/handling and they often conduct stringent checks on the standard of hygiene in the premises of these food operators. To save money and eat more healthily, cook your own meals at home which most families do. A good percentage of our work force are made up of foreigners especially the blue collar workers and those in the service industry. The people you see lying and resting on the floor of void decks, corridors and grass are foreign labourers and construction workers from India, Bangladesh and sometimes China. They are having their siesta during their lunch breaks. Even we Singaporeans are coming to terms to seeing them sleeping on the grounds to catch forty winks:) They have no qualms sleeping on the grounds in public. That only goes to show how clean and green Singapore is! Lol 😂 Singlish is a 'language' that is uniquely Singaporean. It takes someone of our own kind to truly understand and relate to its usage. Believe me, Singlish has given us Singaporeans a great sense of identity, pride, camaraderie and even comfort when we hear fellow Singaporeans use or speak it especially when we are in a foreign land.

You don't have to worry about any food in Singapore . ALL food/drink stalls are regulated according to the NEA rules. No food stall can be opened unless the staff has a food hygiene certificate (issued by NEA) and there will be occasional checks by them. Any food stall that does not pass their standards will be shut down immediately. This includes any food stalls at carnivals/fair/pasarmalam

I'm actually surprised regarding Singlish. Most of us, when speaking to a foreigner, will not use Singlish. We may have a Singlish accent but the words coming out would be normal standard English. However, since you mentioned the taxi driver ("taxi uncle") spoke to you in thick Singlish accent, he's probably the older generation. If you speak to the younger people (under 40s) you'd get normal English cuz you're an "ang mo" :)
@juandenz20086 жыл бұрын
When I went to university there were lots of Singapore and Malaysian students. They spoke "Singlish" amongst themselves, but it wasn't difficult to understand. It seemed to just be normal English but with an accent, sometimes the grammar was messed up, and then they throw in a few "lahs" and "aiyahs" for good measure. Yeah sometimes they might use a word from Malay or some Chinese dialect, but not often.
@foxtwo6 жыл бұрын
*Grin* The lahs and aiyahs are not useless ... they change the context of the sentence depending on the tone, and where they are used in the sentence. And yes, Singlish is kinda "shorthand English" here... it's much faster to say "eh, go where?" then "hey, where are we going?"... we save a few words here and there but we fully understand each other depending on the context. It's not "messed up grammar" per se, but compared to normal English, it's messed up. In Singlish we have grammar rules too, just that foreigners don't know them :) Using the example above: "You go where?" - "Where'd you disappear off to? We were waiting for you!" "Where you?" - "Where are you right now?" Notice there's no lahs cuz grammatically the "lah" would not be appropriate.

Hello Hannah, this is not a correction but more of an explanation of why we call older men and women uncles and aunties respectively. That's because; 1) In Asian culture, it is disrespectful to use a person's name if they are older than you. Conferring them a title is usually the way to go, and since we don't know their names, we just go with Aunty/Uncle. Sir and Mam is something we would use in a more professional setting rather than a casual one. 2) Also in each respective Asian culture, we have our own special names for our aunties and uncles that are related to us. These names will denote by what relations they are too us. So for differentiation, we also use Aunty and Uncle.

One of the shocking things to me about Singapore was how many food items in Cold Storage are actually imported from Australia. These include dairy products, meats and cold cuts. Then I found out that Cold Storage got started in Colonial times by importing chilled and frozen foods from Australia, so I guess it makes sense they stuck with it. As a European, It was rather surprising to me that most of my "Western" food came from Australia and how much cheaper it was than the European version of the same food item. Still, Singapore is still crazy expensive when it comes to Western food items, but anything that comes from Southeast Asia is dirt cheap. I remember Malaysian tomatoes were like 30 cents a Kilo and the Italian version was like 10 dollars or more. The price of alcohol was another shocker and good luck if you want to buy a car, a Suzuki Swift costs the same as a BMW 5-series in Europe. Same thing with real estate, which is unfathomably expensive, particularly if you consider public housing which should be dirt cheap, but it actually costs the same as a nice, private detached house with a garden in pretty much any other country. Did I mention that most Western Europeans get their public housing units practically for free and don't have to pay half a million dollars for the "privilege" of living in a government housing unit in some drab, grey tower? I have a friend who got a council flat in London, without having to pay a penny. Yes, she does have to pay a symbolic amount in monthly rent. Another friend has a council flat in France, he doesn't even live there, just keeps his stuff in there and visits a couple of times a year. Long-term living in Singapore is extremely challenging, unless you're on a huge ex-pat pay package, but most people aren't so lucky.
@ymhktravel6 жыл бұрын
I agree mostly with what you say about public housing in SG. Only HK fare worse in this area.
@juandenz20086 жыл бұрын
+Christian Koncz . Thanks for your insights. I think housing while still affordable in some countries is a big problem in others. Places like Australia, New Zealand, Canada, HK are all seeing housing prices go crazy in major cities, so now many people can't afford to buy a house. I heard the same thing was happening in some major cities in Europe too. I think many smaller european cities still have affordable housing though. Some countries in Europe are quite generous in terms of welfare, which is why so many migrants marched across Europe to get to the most generous countries such as Germany and Sweden. Also some European countries have a lot of pro-renter legislation such as price controls etc.

Welcome to Singapore Hannah! About the food stalls - the NEA develops the hygiene guidelines and food places are rated A to D. D is the lowest you can go, which is like, scoring 40% of the requirements. Any lower and I think their license would be suspended or something. It has nothing to do with the food quality, more of practices like using gloves, keeping storage and stall dry, etc. Singapore has 2 seasons, wet and dry. The wet season or monsoon season is usually around September and February. Get ready as it's about to get real hot and you'd miss the rain. Enjoy your time in Singapore!

1) In my opinion, if a hawker store is allowed to operate, its clean enough. Stores with good foods generally have a B or a C rating because they are just too busy to bother. Stores with an A rating are the stores that either had no business or really devoted to converting the kitchen into a "clean room". 2) I've never seen Singaporeans sleep on floors of public area and I believe no Singaporeans in their right mind would do that. 3) Most (> 95%) of the the construction workers are foreigners. They would usually take a break and find a place to rest. I do see quite a lot of foreign students sun bask in NUS UTown though. 4) Singapore is expensive but not $16 per cup of tea expensive. You're just paying for the prime location.
@humblehouse6 жыл бұрын
Singapore is small but compact - there is rather good city planning in place so as not to waste precious space. For eg, there is a cluster of natural attractions in the Mandai area (Northern) like the few zoos. Sure, they are not exactly cheap but definitely worth a visit. Or you can check out the few reservoirs like Macritchie which are free and have good running trails (but do be careful of animals and keep a look out as certain sections in the forest can be isolated and there are rare cases of crime). For more insights on living in Singapore from a Western expat of view, I would suggest you check out the series of books by Neil Humphreys. Really insightful as he lived here for several years and explored a wide spectrum of Singapore. Thanks for the video. Hope you will have more fun time exploring Singapore as there are really many interesting places especially the outdoors :)

lived in SG for 1,5 years, totally agree on every point and well done running a marathon!:) I'd add these : - SG is very safe so you are totally alright if you feel like going for a walk / run to the park late in the evening or even at the middle of the night - there are snakes in the wilder parts of the forests (e.g. Bukit Timah, MacRitchie), so watch your step all the time if you are up for a trail run in the jungle. - if you are vegetarian - even if you see a bowl of plain noodles or fried vegetables at hawker centres - always ask whether they added animal fat or chicken floss or smth (oh , yeah, they love frying pretty much everything on animal fat and adding animal powders, even to the sauces). asking whether food is "vegetarian" is not always safe, so ask specific questions. same thing at the restaurants , even western - once I got "Mediterranean rice" (which is just rice and veggies) with...chicken powder.

New to your channel. You seem expressive, lovely and most importantly a genuine and cool person! Keep up the quality content and hope you continue to find living in SIngapore a great experience! Those taking naps are mostly construction workers and mainly because its convenient for them to rest between long and dull working hours throughout the day. They are foreigners from less developed countries so you can imagine they are simply bringing their culture and way of life to this country.

Hi I live in Singapore and this popped up so I totally agree with you like I don't think I've come across such a relatable video about Singapore ahaha. Like, I agree that the food at the hawker centres are AMAZING although the environment can be quite messy and revolting at times... And it's quite true that some Singlish is hard to understand even for a Singaporean like me. Sometimes the taxi drivers and hawkers would speak dialect which most of the younger generation (like me) can't understand. It might help to learn a few basic words in dialect though, it'll make life much easier ;)

A plausible reason for why construction workers just nap everywhere is due to the fact that some of the 'louder' work can only be started in the wee hours of the morning or it may cause disturbances to the residents nearby. As such, the workers would be exhausted at that point (probably early noon time) and need a break before starting work again, similar to a night shift worker's sleep schedule. Also, from my observation, they tend to sleep at void decks of the flats which are near their jobsites so that they can return to their work quickly.

Great enriching video! I never planned to go to Singapore, but now you made it interesting to me. :D About Australia: I wanna know and see everything about it. I don't even know where to start. How is it to live with the climate in Brisbane and Sydney (and wherever you lived as well). Are there a lot of poisoning animals in the cities? Do people go to nature or are they feared to die by an animal attack (spider, snakes, elephants xD, etc.)? How cheap or expensive is the life in the cities? Is there racism although Australia has a multicultural society? Is it hard to find work? Are all women as cute as you are? ;D Seriously, I'd love to have all of these questions answered because I wanna know if I could live there for a while. And please tell what city you would recommend most. Thank you so much in advance! Your channel is awesome!! :)

One crucial thing I wished I knew was that plenty,but not every,Singaporeans are super whiny and racists towards foreign workers.It’s what ruins my experience in Singapore tbh,they find the most ridiculous reasons just to degrade any foreigners behind their back.Don’t even deny this.
@John_Smith_866 жыл бұрын
When life is so good, that you need to find things to complain about. Sounds bad, but then again at least we don't have many "real" problems. Which is good.
@ej48946 жыл бұрын
80% of them are whiners. I agree. But the rest are a small and growing minority who's out there making a change for our foreign labourers. That's whats being taught in SG schools nowadays so the next generation can be better people. Learning from our mistakes and making progress is key to change.
@energiam8805 жыл бұрын
It's not just low skilled migrant workers who sleep during break times. Scientists/engineers do too. I did an Internship in Singapore with one of the government's scientific research labs. People are generally hard working and have a much better work ethic compared to most people in the west. But it's not uncommon for people to power nap for half an hour at their desk. Looking forward to being a (British) expat in Singapore. The few months I've spent there were the best moments of my life!

I'm an Australian who has been in balmy Singapore now for eight years. I am a bit shocked you didn't realise how small the place is - it is a little over 700 sq klms, and that's actually a bit misleading as part of that are industrial islands used for oil processing, and the entire east coast (including Changi airport) is reclaimed land. Just to clarify your issue with sleeping workers. Most of the industrial workers here (construction, engineering, renovations, cleaning, whatever) are work crews from India, Philippines, Bangladesh, China, Malaysia et al. They typically work long hours and get paid very little by western standards, with their quarters being dormitories and shared accommodation. It is common for them to just chill during work breaks and don't forget, they do a lot of manual labour so they do get tired. Many locals hardly cook and some apartments don't have much in the way of cooking equipment, and with the cost of hawker centre food being so low, it is no wonder that so many routinely eat there.

Chanced upon your video! Agree with your points haha. The thing about construction workers taking naps though; they usually do that during their lunch breaks. I think their jobs are just too physically demanding so they grab rest whenever they can. Also because their worksites are usually nearby so after lunch they just head back to work. Either that or sometimes they’re just waiting for their bosses’ instructions, say if they ended work earlier. It’s quite sad though that they have to grab rest on the floors. It’s really quite considerate of them; when i notice them under void decks, they will never make use of void deck facilities such as the benches or tables, they’ll choose to sit or lie on the floors instead, when those facilities are free and available for their use!
