DICE was really good for this between Battlefield 4 and V, including the Battlefront games. I’m sure they’ll get back at it again after 2042. Footprints, mud allocation on firearms, lighting, and different sounds. The sound design of Insurgency Sandstorm is probably the best. Probably in anything but a stealth game/section it's completely pointless but I absolutely love when you can instantly believe your character is walking is on a wood floor verses the ground, mud or the grass. Something I adore in Fallout: New Vegas, and they had zero reason to add this: special dialogue if you couldn't pass a skill/speech check. Seeing the difference between someone at Speech 50 sounding like a professional diplomat and 49 sounding like a caveman was always hilarious. In a similar vein, having occasional "dumb" dialogue options if your character had a low enough intelligence; i.e. when a robot guard asks for a passcode, and if your INT is low enough, you can respond "ICE CREAM!" There wasn't any real mechanical purpose to put those in, but they make the game and your character feel all the more immersive and real.

MY TIME HAS COME OK here’s a list of a bunch of small details in botw!!! -the rito village music will slightly change depending on how many side quests you’ve completed and whether or not kass is there -link’s body temperature is ever so slightly cooler when standing in the shade and ever so slightly warmer when in the sun -if you leave the game idle while link is shirtless, he’ll flex! -similarly, if you leave the game idle and (in game) it’s late at night link will fall asleep before quickly jolting himself awake -if you kick a chest open with no shoes on, link grabs his foot and hops around in pain -you can catch bokoblins hunting animals in the wild -if you throw a boomerang at a lizalfos (their weapon of choice) they’ll just catch it -each monk in each shrine is posed differently -there are different animations for eating skewers, drinking elixirs, eating meals and manually using fairies -when your quiver is empty, link’s stance will change slightly and firing the bow will only give you a small strumming noise edit: adding more details !! -on certain nights in the hebra mountains you can see the aurora borealis! -walking around naked and talking to NPCs will generate interesting and different dialogue options! (i recommend getting nakey and talking to paya in kakariko village, her reaction is *chefs kiss*) -the temple of time music is actually just the temple of time music from ocarina of time slowed down -similarly, the stable theme has epona's song as a leitmotif -each of the staircases in rito village has a different amount of feathers depending on what floor/story you're on -wearing a fire weapon in a cold area will raise your body temperature and vise versa -you can ride bears, deer, and even lynels (for a short amount of time lmao) -if you whistle near a school of fish, they'll beach themselves, which is an actual fear reaction in fish -additionally, at around 8pm ingame time, if you're standing at hebra peak, it'll stop snowing and clear up momentarily. if you listen closely, the music will actually become more "clear" too, you can hear more of the flute! it's so beautiful

One detail that I always look for in games is in the cut scenes, if my character is holding a certain weapon when the cut scene begins, I expect my character to be holding that weapon during the cut scene and to still have that weapon after the cut scene. Unless they show the character putting the weapon down or holstering it; or the game goes to a different time in the story. That's one thing that used to piss me off in the Gears series. I was replaying BOTW recently when I noticed that groups of Bokoblins and Moblins will have conversations with each other if you sit and observe them for a while. You'll see them turn to the other and there's a speech animation, and they'll go back and forth like this for a bit before jumping up and down like someone told a great joke. Sure, a lot of other games have enemy NPCs talk to each other. But this is not something most players notice in a game like this. Especially given these are supposed to be mindless monsters. I have a lot of issues with BOTW's mechanics, but I have to give them credit for attention to detail. Yakuza 0 is another one that does something similar. For example, you'll see NPCs approach a vending machine, then ponder their choice before making a selection. There's a whole bunch of sequences like that. Really makes Kamurocho feel more immersive. Yet for some reason, a lot of those little touches were dropped in the later Dragon Engine games. People in the new games just mostly walk around and look at their phones. Oh, well... I guess that is pretty realistic.

#3 - I’m sure it has been mentioned, but Shenmue was the first game I remember having an interactive journal… and, though kind of dull and boring, it was a necessary companion to the game if ever you set down the controller for a week and then wanted to get back into the groove. Unless you had a player’s guide or reliable internet source at the time, the journal was your only hope for remembering where you are in the storyline and where to go next. I found it fascinating as a young gamer, and it’s only just a small part of the charm of that game that left me with such a fond memory of my first complete play through. Then there was fan backlash and they became the laughing stock for how bad their lettuce looked. When the released it to dvd, they reanimated the entire cooking scene with a better head of lettuce. In the South Park rpgs there are some truly amazing 4th wall breaks you never see coming. Like Cartman showing up dressed as Patriots coach Bellichick and call you a cheater if you input a code early in the game that you aren't supposed to know yet. Or my personal fave, in the Fractured but Whole, if you try to skip the opening cinematic Cartman will at first ask you not to, since you would miss out on story details, but gets increasingly annoyed if you insist. Until he gets fed up and actually sends you straight to the credits roll, since you obviously don't care about the story of the game. And btw, if you try to skip the opening with a clear game file Cartman will acknowledge the fact you've already finished the game and let you do it without consequences.

There is a small detail I love in games that makes a huge impact in the immersion, when you stop at a store or a window or even the trash in the street and you see bottles and bags with made up brand names for sodas, chips, gum and other products instead of just a red or green bottle or can. Those little details improve the experience.

The weather effects in Witcher 3 are pretty amazing. Speaking of, and this is an odd detail that I’m surprised the developers thought of, but if you equip Active Shield in your skill tree and use an active Quen in a rain storm, the rain actually impacts the shield. You can see small little waves from the rain drops impacting the shield, and it’s so inconsequential but so cool

Sound design, lighting and first person perspective immerses me most. Especially in horror games, like Outlast 2 or Alien Isolation or Metro Exodus for instance.

This is what I love about BOTW. The sound design is just so satisfying. The sound of your movements differ depending on what armor and what weapons you have equipped. I like it when you're wearing a fabric armor and you're quieter than if you were wearing a metalic one. I wiah more games had these details.

Awesome list. If you make a part two You should mention how in Halo infinite whatever gun you're holding in game Will be the gun that you see in the cutscene when Master Chief is talking. Most games usually shift to the default weapon during cutscenes so I like that halo infinite was able to model every weapon into the cutscenes

The Snow effects in Last of Us 2 to NOT look realistic at all. I do not know what the hell you think snow looks like. Snow is a powder that only compress if you step on it. If you brush it with your feet while stepping. It does not leave a even trail of compressed snow like your foot is some type of powerwasher. If you are walking in a foot of snow. You are slow and take long steps. It doesn't look like an ant army just went through. I hate it when people give games more credit then they deserve and Last of us 2 is the king of that

Another thing I really appreciated about HZD's Frozen Wilds DLC, is that when performing a roll, you can see that there's grass underneath it. Which isn't just a step up from the main game, but it's something that happens in reality. And that's honestly a pretty cool attention to detail!

On the "guns working realistically" note, I am very surprised you guys didn't mention Escape from Tarkov. You have to manually load each round into your magazine, and reloading your weapon in the field without emptying your full magazine first means you have several magazines in your inventory that are like half full, or 1/4 full. So eventually, you have to hide, unload all those partially filled magazines and load the rounds into new magazines so you have some complete mags.

About NPC's and their reactions to the player... There is one game series that I really love to pieces because of the NPC's (and there are LOTS of them) have their own little story development throughout the game. These are the Trails games from Nihom Falcom. Those NPC's not only develop their own story throughout a single game (every time you meet them after some small main story development their story also has advanced), but even throughout several games in those series. And, as said, I am not talking about a only a few NPC's here. The trails games span about 9 games in a row (Trails in the Sky 1, 2, 3th, Trails from Zero, Trails to Azure, Trails of Cold Steel I, II, III, IV), and you can still meet characters in the last game that where present in the first game. Talking about commitment and world building...

Playing 'last of us 2'. Sneaking around and spotted a guard and his dog. Last two arrows. Decided to take out the dog first but was worried about him sounding alarm. 1 shot dog and went to immediately take out the guard. Before I could, he saw his dog die and said holy sh!t before I 1 shot him too. Instead of instantly alerting all the rest of the enemies he freaked out about his dog dying right next to him. Thought that was a cool detail, little grim but still cool

I myself was thinking how cool it would be if some NPC commented how you changed your outfit or something like that. Most devs don't integrade that stuff, but it would be nice if they start to do that in the future. Most people appreciate that, especially in AAA games.

Regarding games starting to handle firearms realistically, I have used a many different types of firearms, a lot of fun ones in the Army. When I first started playing video games, two things stood out to me. How am I able to carry so many relatively large firearms and why is my reload so fast? But, I realized it's a game and it was for gameplay. I suspended disbelief and enjoyed myself.

Odd most games I think why does this guy reload like it's his first time touching a gun and gets exhausted after sprinting two feet. Lmao
