There was a dark story I once read where he rescues a woman trapped in a cellar. She had clawed at the top of the wooden trap door till her fingers bled nearly to bone. When he brings her out, wrapped in his cloak from a fire, he finds there is only bones. She had died years ago and he I think he just got memories while he was in there. Weird story.

According to Morrison's script, the scene in Arkham Asylum was apparently gonna be even worse originally, ending with Arkham eating his wife and daughter's flesh and talking about how cultures all over the world have engaged in ritual cannibalism of the deceased for centuries and it's all perfectly rational.
