I finally succumbed to my desire to have a white kitchen.. (refaced the cabinets and donated the oak doors, drawers, hardware etc, to a friend who has 1970s pressboard cabinets) .I have color though.. my cabinets are white but the color comes in counters flooring and small splashes of color on the exposed walls above the cabinets and around the windows.. . My kitchen was so dark, now it's bright without having to turn on flood lights!

My favorite kitchen of all time was the huge vintage kitchen/dining room in Moonstruck. Lots of light/white and a giant table with room for everyone to congregate in the kitchen while still leaving room for cooking & cleaning. Way too many open or exposed shelves, though. I would want all the cabinets closed except for a very few cabinets (one or two) with glass doors to display antique & hand-made items, such as woven baskets & ceramics.

Trend that I’m over: exposed light bulbs on every light fixture. I mean like over industrial/ farmhouse type. I think it’s better to have a mix of styles, especially if it’s literally a chord with a bulb hanging on it. It’s one of my favorite ways to mix styles is through light fixtures. Throw in some more traditional or contemporary fixtures to jazz it up a bit. I actually still love subway tile. I think it’s classic and hard to go wrong with it. I do like seeing it done a bit different though. Do a stacked or vertical design, or maybe a straight herringbone.
@stefaniebarber47722 жыл бұрын
The lightbulb I agree but like standard subway tiles give me visions of NYC rats in my head. I don't get that thought if it is in a different pattern.

We stayed at a beautiful hotel in England years ago that had renovated its bathrooms to include partially enclosed showers, that is, with a half glass wall. Needless to say, water went everywhere. I couldn’t imagine what housekeeping thought! I ended up cleaning the bathroom after every shower. No reduction in room rate was offered. It has to be one of today`s more ridiculous design trends, along with open kitchen shelving. Great video, Garrett, thank you!

I think some of those are hotel rooms retrofitted with half glass for accessibility reasons. The existing floor slopes the wrong way though so the whole bathroom floor gets wet and slippery so you have to mop it up with towels to avoid getting your feet wet or slipping.

"The first trend we hate is... painting antiques" - immediately clicks 'like'. Agree on pretty much all of these. Floating cabinets - I'd forgotten how much I hate these! I've got one in my current bathroom but it's between a shower enclosure and a wall so it doesn't look too bad, although it's a pain to clean under. They're just one of those things that are often trying far to hard to be 'modern' but just look ugly and cheap. I could rant all day about things I don't like, but one thing, I don't know if it's been mentioned or if it's still a trend - a while back there was a thing for boxy plywood interiors. Sheets of plywood stuck to walls and ceilings. Featureless cabinets and built in cupboards all made out of bare plywood. An expensive material that looks cheap. Trying so so hard to be trendy but looking like a bike shed or pop-up shoe shop. I normally love wood but I can't stand this look. I'm sure it can't age gracefully either. Just seems like a waste of good wood to me.

I am over oil rubbed bronze. Had it in last house and all hardware rubbed off to brass! Current house remodel I mandated black matte doorknobs, hinges, strike plates door stoppers. Couldnt believe how hard it was to find in traditional. What little there was is very modern so I had to custom order everything😤 I am also over round door knobs. Lever style is more practical. Easy for arthritic hands, easy to turn if hands are wet or lotion-y, and you can open with your elbow! :D

So there's a good deal of white but definitely not everything is white.

Very thin grout cracks & falls out as the tile expands & contracts with temperature changes. "Normal" white grout needs to be repeatedly sealed or it absorbs dirt & never looks clean again. I really hate grout in a kitchen. I wish my rental had smooth & uniform counters & backsplash, e.g. cut from stone or a stone-like manmade material. You still need to caulk the seams, but maintenance is nothing compared to "miles" of grout lines.
@nogames89822 жыл бұрын
@@jeanvignes that's one of the reasons I went with gray grout lines. The idea of white grout lines was nice until I thought about the cleaning and then I decided no way

I had an all white kitchen in a little 1945 ranch house and it suited it perfectly. Now I have a house in the woods that’s a little more rustic, so I have a midtone cherry wood cabinets, black and cream granite, bamboo floors, and walls that are a tan sort of color. Again, this kitchen suits the house perfectly. I also have a couple of open shelves on the opposite side of the kitchen from the range. Absolutely no problems with dust or grease so far and we’ve been here for several months. One trend I really hate is that fake distressed furniture. You know, with chippy paint or part of the paint buffed back off. It just looks cheap and tacky.

I bought it back in the 70's for $25.00 at a thrift store It ha traveled the world with me. Love the cool, clean and warm. The houseboat , you can see all the areas. So it is wood everywhere. A white kitchen would be a stark contrast to everything and would not make for a cohesive first floor.

The cabinet is tucked between 2 walls and secured on top of the rads (that you don't see) and supported on both sides under the cabinet. Advice: Couches and chairs made before the early-mid 80's are worth reupholstering, since the frames made pre1985-ish are made from solid wood with good joinery work. Couches and chairs made post 1985 (unless it's a super high quality line piece like from Baker) are usually made from cheap pine and stapled together. Post 1985 chairs and couches are throw away items. Hunt antique fairs for old couch and chair frames as those things will last 1000 years. Sad note, in the 70's, my mom had a gorgeous dusty rose velvet camel back Victorian couch that was 100 years old made with an oak frame, until my two 6'+ brothers, each over 200lbs, were wrestling and broke the frame. Still makes me wanna cry, as it had lovely lines and was very comfortable.

”Wood isn’t supposed to be gray” - looking at my newly restored ash wood floor and some distinctly grayish pieces of wood, this piece was a bit funny! Though I do not like any of the gray wooden floors I’ve seen in stores where it has been colored gray or wood that has been grayed out by uv radiation outside, the natural gray tint in the ash wood is gorgeous.

Your comment is a stretch on what I was saying. What I was speaking about is vinyl flooring or wood that is stained gray. That is completely unnatural. You are seeing some warm gray undertones in the ash wood, but it is hardly a completely gray floor.

I don't have a white kitchen. I have gray cabinets. When I moved in to this house, almost every wall was painted a pale mint color, and I didn't hate it. But I immediately painted two rooms and I've painted more over the past year. My kitchen is now an ochre color, "Turner Yellow"--the name sold me! I'm going to paint those gray cabinets this year, mainly bc they're painted with latex and it's chipping off (ugh). I'm painting them a dark green that's almost black.

We are adding some dark floral wall paper as an accent wall, with blush cabinets on top and a darker color on bottom. Keeping the walls white so that the dark colors pop in the kitchen. I love a blend of bright spaces with windows and light, but with some moody color schemes. 👌🏻

I did paint my mothers dark cherry wood bedroom set. first chalk white then sateen white and found beautiful glass square knobs and will pass it on to my great grand daughter .Now it looks very nice and is at least 80 years old the drawers the whole set is sturdy and strong. I like some flipping not all. Definitely did not care for the bead thing. I am African American and in Africa beads were representative of culture or religious symbol. Thanks for your videos and your fur babies.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh what a fun video to watch! Taste is so personal, I actually LOVE LOVE the white kitchen, the subway tiles (done right), I also like the floating shelves AWAY from cooking area and different than you I actually like the modern look of floating vanities, counter etc… I HATE the wooden beads, the pampas grass, the fury pillows, the painted antiques and the backward books 😂😂😂😂

I love my white Kitchen-after remodeling a previous white kitchen to non white- I realized it was not my style to have non white- white just feels cleaner and less cluttered.

Here's why I got rid of our glass tub enclosure: I had my 2 year old grandson in the tub for a bath. He didn't want to come out. So he scooted to the side where the glass was closed. I slide open that glass and he scoots to the other side where the glass was now closed (laughing diabolically). This goes on for several rounds. Meanwhile Grandma's (me) back is giving out. Glass doors gone, shower curtain in place.

I love a white kitchen. Just the cabinets though. I love, love, love bold colour on the walls and throughout the space. Makes me want to investigate. I just bought a new home last month and the whole thing is gray. Inside, and out, and can't wait to paint and add my personal touch.

I love my white kitchen it's so easy to decorate the way I want. I also have a floating vanity which I love, but it's between two walls and the vanity mirrors can actually be opened out. I also want to decorate with wooden beads (actually a rosary) as a way to incorporate something religious without being obvious (I'm catholic while my husband is agnostic).

I just remodeled my kitchen in all white and it looks wonderful. I’m bringing in color with art and blue and white reupholstered dining chairs. And of course people bring color to each space as well. I live in an area with long winters and this kitchen puts a smile on my face every time I walk into it- vert cheery and classic and timeless.

I love my open cabinets, but I use everything on them. I just buy nice spice bottles and dishes and I just love the look of a simple cheese grater sitting on a dark wood shelf.

Love my white kitchen! But we went darker and more interesting on the granite, so it’s not complete white all over

What I hate the most is all stone countertops. If we drop any glass, it breaks into pieces in addition to the maintenance of some. It's really not the best option I think for countertop. The second thing I hate are all ceramic floors. If there is liquid on the floor that we don't see and we walk on it, we are sure to fall and can seriously hurt ourselves like it happened to me a few times. I have often noticed that the trends are often not functional and safe sadly. But in the other hand what I like is your show. Thank you.

Kitchen talk again! I want white slab cabinets because the dirt shows so I can clean it off. Lol. I suppose light gray would work, but…gray.

I took my grandmother's mirrored perfume tray and repurposed it. Besides a bottle of port and glasses from a local designer, I scattered some crystal hearts I had lying around. Definitely not wooden beads, but they do add a little shine to the otherwise dulling mirror.
