I have a leather couch, which is the only piece of furniture my dog is allowed on in the living room. Well...she's actually too big to fit on the chairs...lol That couch wears like iron, is easy to clean, and the patina over time is fantastic. Loved this pet-friendly video!

A tip for cleaning pet hair is to mist it with water (VERY lightly) or spray static spray on it before you vacuum it. It works in cars too. It breaks the static connection the hair generates.

Indoor/outdoor rugs and cowhide rugs are pet friendly. A little bit of Dawn dish soap and a water hose is all you need to clean them.

We put on a storm door with a doggie door in it. No cutting into our doors or glass. We just close the door when it is time to come in at night or when we leave.

The color wheel 😆 I was hairdresser and we need to know by heart to neutralise fake undertone and all. But in reality we work with color chart not this wheel! It’s funny to see designers do similar with this wheel and kick out after school 🤣 I think the company to make color wheel have deal with school. Very nice video 💛🇨🇦

I am guilty of the feature wall. My house is all pink, duck egg and cream and very feminine and I find wallpaper that is very flowery and I adore but it would give me a headache if it was all across the room so most of my rooms have wallpaper I love but which is OTT on one wall

I love that I'm listening to you while sitting between 2 sleeping cats. All of the litter boxes in our home are in cabinet end tables that I bought off of Amazon. My cats prefer sleeping in baskets with blankets over cat beds. When they are not sleeping on the furniture that is. I saw a really cool cat tree that looks like a tree.

My mom has quilted 4 blankets for my little coton de tulear. I keep one in the back of my car, two in my house, and the 4th my parents keep at their place. Since they were made by her grandmom, she added little tags with greetings to the dog and washing instructions for me.

I have 2 cats. One of them is a half long hair. I bought 2 stretchers for dogs for them. On top of them a blanket that I can wash. I bought a cat tree in a neutral color. I don't want a cat tree in a purple, red or whatever screaming color in my house. All the blankets and pillows are also in a neutral color. Years ago I have a conversion cupboard made for the litterbox. It was worth the money every pennie. When my cats are no longer alive than I don't want pets anymore for at least a couple of years. They are expensive with food and cat litter and I want my home clean for a longer period of time than 15 minutes. Irma from the Netherlands

This was a great video and I would love to see more pet friendly decor tips! We have 3 old dogs (all are about 15) and 1 middle aged cat. We are now retired to open and close the back sliding glass door a bazillion times a day so we no longer have to worry about a dog door. However the dog door was a godsend in our pre-retirement houses. I didn’t care what it looked like and the fact that it could be a little drafty in the cold, snowy winter. It was a necessary evil back then. All my furniture fabric is performance fabric which is washable and looks beautiful. Unfortunately no matter what fabric we get, the cat loves to claw the material so I just have to accept the clear plastic protector on the sides and back of our furniture 🙄. It isn’t too noticeable. But I LOVE the litter box furniture in the links! Those are GREAT especially for my daughter and son-in-law who live in a tiny coop in Manhattan…not a lot of space to hide a litter box but these litter box furniture pieces will work

Love, love, love this video!!!! No one else does this content, my 2 corgis (double coated super shedders!!), rule the roost and they are always considered in my decor and how my house functions without compromising style and comfort for ALL of us. Cleaning is key and your comments on surfaces and materials is so helpful. I’ve learned by trial and error for sure. Low nap carpet and quality vacuum and carpet cleaner are my go to. This really helps me not feel apologetic about what I’ve done to protect my furniture and make investments in tools and attractive doggy products. I believe in frequent grooming for my guys, keeps everyone healthy and happy!!

I'm late to this conversation, but THANK YOU for being so realistic and also for caring about the planet. I just moved, and I have the dreaded honey oak cabinets. But just because they're out of style, does that mean I really need to change them? I don't think so! Thank you Garret, you are the wisest voice in design!!!

A great fabric if you have cats is velvet. They don't scratch it because their claws can't hook onto the fabric.

I have two amazing merino wool orthopedic dog beds I ordered from England, and at least the cushion covers are machine washable. But I agree, dogs beds generally do not hold up that well to machine washing. The washable rugs are indeed a lifesaver, especially if you have puppies or elderly dogs. I have three washable runners. Having rugs professionally washed costs a fortune.

Garrett, thank you for such a great video! You are the first designer I've ever known to address our pet families and incorporate their needs into our wish for a well designed home. This video couldn't have come a better time for me. I was asked to foster a two year old cat, and I ended up adopting him. He's gray - my sofa is white! He's having a wonderful time scratching it up! 😂

Blankets are your friend! I keep my seating surfaces covered with blankets that I wash all the time but when someone comes over, I just go through and grab all the blankets and put them in the storage ottoman. All of my furniture stays cat-hair free and is ready in a snap. CAT FAX As a rule, always use multiple litter boxes for your cats. One more than whatever number of cats you have, 2 cats = 3 litter boxes. Some cats don’t like an enclosed space but those big bench type things Garrett showed are the best option if you wanna try it, I still strongly recommend always having an extra, uncovered litter box with low sides available. Keep the water separate from the food and keep them both separate from the poop. Always make windows accessible for cats, get a cute patio chair cushion and put it up in a window for them.

Cats don't like to scratch velvet or microfibers. You can buy sisal-covered panels that you can attach to the wall for kitty to scratch if you have a small space and no room for a scratching post. Also, you can buy (or make) cat trees out of actual tree trunks/branches and they look really good.

My sofas are velvet and it's awesome. Easy to clean and the cats don't scratch it. (They love the linen weave chair. Which has held up pretty well to the abuse but not as well as velvet because the velvet isn't being clawed.)

We have a nice screen that we hid the litter box behind. It high enough to keep the smell if any, behind the screen. The litter box is between the screen and the wall with enough room for the cat to use in privacy. I just move the screen to make room when I clean the litter box, after, I move it back. We have just purchased some mesh for our patio so our cats can sit outside without the fear of them squeezing between the patio bars and falling. We are currently going to paint the mesh white so it blends with the patio bars and become invisible to people below and across from us. Our cats have cat trees and there are cat toys and balls all over the home. Yes it looks messy, but I would pick all the toys up and put them in their toy basket if we are having company. This way if they want toys to play with they can take them out of their basket one at a time. But most of the time the floor is covered we cat toys and that’s ok with us. After all it’s their home too and they are growing kittens (Star and Luna are 7 months old at the moment and are very playful) ❤ 🤗 🇨🇦

A great solution for our tiny chihuahua to get onto her “perch” so she can look out the window, is a carefully stacked set of cushions with fabulous carpet like covers that I got in Turkey. Beautiful and useful. Thanks for the video about the role of pets in our lives.

Good Morning Garrett, The best thing today is to see Albert, Linus and Cornealius in one frame♥️ Thank you for the cutest vlog:) I am not a pet parent, yet:) but I thoroughly enjoyed it and what I like the best is you talk so genuine like my friend who would speak with so transparency and no sugar coating. I genuinely appreciate you as an individual first and for sure that makes you the best designer 😍 I am a dog person and will remember everything that you mentioned whenever I will get one:) You have a fantastic weekend and see you soon..xx

Who the heck wants to smell a litter box in their bedroom or living room?? People may not be able to see it (tucked away looking like furniture) but they will certainly still SMELL when kitty leaves.

Part of the price of having kitties is frequent cleaning. I have 4 cats and just scoop frequently. And yes, I can scoop both large boxes, turn around and someone is back in the box. Didn't plan on 4 cats, but took my mom's 2 cats when she passed away. If that is the last thing I can do for my mom, I will do it happily.

I absolutely appreciate and connect with your advice about the importance of lighting! I belong to a canasta group. The four other homes have abysmal lighting! In every case, the living room is adjacent to the dining room table where we play. These hosts keep the living room area totally dark. In all four cases, there is one chandelier over the table, and that is our *only* light. So depressing. In my living room, I have a chandelier centered above the coffee table and hung low enough to appreciate, but not so low that it obstructs your view of the fireplace. Also, table lamps on the two end tables flanking the sofa, recessed lighting in the ceiling, and a floor lamp adjacent to one of the armchairs. Those lights are *all* turned on when we play.

A dog door was essential for me. Luckily, I was able to install it in the door leading to the garage which is a few steps down and not in any sight lines of the main living space. I purchase heavy cavass dog bed covers form a company, they also sell a waterproof liner. I use old memory foam mattress toppers or pillows to stuff them. A friend had a carpenter make custom gates from a stair banister and spindles, they look great.

Pet feeding stations are another potential sore point, especially when our fur babies are messy eaters. Sometimes in the desire to make them pretty folks sacrifice safety (think porcelain feeding bowls from Villeroy and Boch, how long do you think they last and how far will the shards go).

I like wood sleigh toddler beds and mattresses for my large dogs (without the side rails). With a tough mattress cover they last a really long time and they aren't too high for older dogs to manage. They make dog doors with a glass panel on top for glass sliding doors and they are fairly inexpensive (you use it on the non-opening side).

My 1950 house has a walk-through living room with the door to a screen porch on one side. Front door on opposite side in an open foyer into the main room. Large opening into this main room to the bedroom wing at the foyer, another large opening into what was used as a small dining room but is now a den. Small fireplace on same wall as opening into foyer to bedroom wing. Technically the fireplace is centered but because of the larger opening on that wall, it really isn’t. It’s so odd.
