Both my grandpas and lots of other relatives were dairy farmers. When my grandpas retired from milking, they raised Black Angus. My mom had Swiss roots and there were many cheesemakers. I simply can not imagine life without good meat and cheese. My favorite dessert hang-out is Dairy Queen. I buy as much as possible from my Wisconsin farmers whether it be veggies or protein. God bless our farmers!

My dog's food has gotten way too expensive. I have found that, if I buy ingredients on sale, I can make healthier food for less. I bought chicken legs for 99¢, frozen mixed vegetables for 99¢, oatmeal for $3.29 for a big container, I boiled the chicken in 6 cups of water, deboned it and put the meat, gristle & skin in the blender and blended it. I used the water, which was now stock, to cook the oatmeal and frozen vegetables. Then, I added the chicken, put it in snack size bags and froze it. For less than $4.00 I made enough food for 3 weeks. I still have enough of everything to make 2 more batches.

I screenshot your comment as I have been wanting to make homemade dog food for the dog and pot belly pig. The pig will not eat some foods that are made for them, she thinks she is a human or dog. She won't let the dog eat unless we feed her dog food.

I’ve always been one who believe that eating out should be for special occasions only. I just know I can make it tastier, quicker and cheaper at home. I can just think of so many more things. I’d rather spend my money on then eating out. I’m all about experiences rather than food.

I wish my picky spouse would eat more than baked chicken and Doritos. When I make OUR eggs for him for breakfast, I get a grudging nod, trying to give his day a good warm breakfast start, instead of Tim Hortons donuts. I get nothing but pushback on my gardening choices that aren't corn beans it the "right" kind of potatoes. I asked for a trial separation and he said he wouldn't leave.

It's not that way the less mouths you have to feed, and the more you forcibly involve the rest of your family to participate in high stakes team based community survival skills. This should never be a "you" thing... it definitely should be "we/us" thing. If those around you are not willing to embrace these necessary skills and learning to survive and thrive- find other people.

Soda and entire row. Sports drinks an entire row. Paper products an entire row. The store had much less real food.

More space, and plenty of junkfood filling plenty of grocery store real estate. 😳 As well as the prices going up, less variety, and shrinkflation. I have sugar sand (no nutrients in it) and am in Texas. I decided to try growing vegetables, herbs, and figs in side in what WAS the guest bedroom. No one came to visit, so some 2 inch × 12 inch boards on empty 5 gal buckets, stacked so I can reach the back row. Put up several LED grow lights, bought some started plants, but will also start seeds. I did buy 3 - 25 lb boxes of tomatoes to make my sauce and other stuff, but fresh cherry tomatoes would be nice for Christmas! The boxes ranged from $23 - 30 a box and I got 25 pints per box. Also planting cabbage, cauliflower, some herbs, cucumbers, and a fig tree.

Someday he will thank me!?!? I need to order wheat berries! It’s scary for those of us who have never had a huge pantry before. I guess I’m late to the game. But I’m doing what I can!!! I don’t mind making bread! But my husband likes his “store bought bread”…..UGH! Nothing seems to be on sale now……not really. I’m going to start stocking up on butter powder and lard. I have a few snow peas growing…..not enough!!! Bought new dirt to get them. I’m so frustrated! They’re really trying to find more ways to starve us! One more thing, when we cull our birds, we grind them up whole, organs and all, and add a few things, veggies, fruits etc. And that is our cat and dog food for the winter. We replenish our birds each spring, for egg layers, and the random roosters are broth. Its a cycle, but it works well since the birds free range all spring, summer and fall and the feed price is very low. Just winter feed. And of course the eggs they lay in abundance pay for that. So, just some ideas to consider.

Hi Leisa Last week was a major disaster for us. We were burgled. Presumably looking for cash and jewellery, some of the first of which they found, but the latter we lost years ago to previous thefts and never replaced. Presumably because we didn't have enough of those, they turned on my pantry. Every jar we had was thrown and smashed, the Mylar bags the ripped with a knife and the contents thrown in top of the broken jars. We lost a two year production of canned and stored food. Even replacing the jars will now cost at least £1000, over a month's pension for me. Our place is usually very secure but we have scaffolding round it and we left a tiny window upstairs open. Only a kid could have got in. Well, the dog and cat food is OK! So the dog now stays home if we are both going out. He would have been the final deterrent as he sounds ferocious. I took the week off to mourn my pantry, but need to get back to it now.

The Dollar Tree has 12 oz bags (Great Northern, Red, Lentils) and 1 pound bags of beans (Pinto) for $1.25 each. 2 pound bags of brown and white rice also sell for $1.25 each. This may be a good option for some who can't afford to buy in bulk or want to just pay in cash locally. We have beans and rice, oats, wheat berries, popcorn, flour, etcetera stocked up, but, I also stock up on these beans and rice to feed our backyard chickens. We don't buy feed from the feed store for them anymore because the price just keep increasing. No food goes to waste in our house! All the extra food goes to the chickens or gets composted to feed our garden. Our chickens also get greens, garden weeds, fruit, and veggies from the garden. We also give our hens free choice of crushed oyster shells. I soak their beans overnight and pressure cook them the next day just like I do for us. This is how we fed them back in the day and they were fine. They look happy and healthy. We still buy dog food for our 2 pups, but, if push comes to shove, they will eat whatever we eat.

My husband farms and raised cattle. We have extensive family around us that farm and raise livestock as well so we are fortunate to have our own source of meat and grain. The most common response we get from first time direct buyers is that it isn’t the same as what they’re used to getting from the grocery stores. The meat cuts aren’t as big, they have more color and much stronger flavor. It’s crazy how many people are put off by that. We don’t direct sell crops, but I know there is a big difference in quality there as well. I have to remind myself as to the extent of how processed and synthetic the typical American diet is. Most people aren’t familiar with what real, natural food is.

I recently found ground beef on sale for $1.58/lb, and was able to get about 45 lbs. for $71.55. Yesterday, a local meat market had chicken for $1.10/lb, so I was THANKFULLY able to afford to get 86 lbs for about $95. Recently, even the deals at the local meat market have been 40lb of chicken for 80 and ground beef went up to 50 lbs for !50!, I got 131 lbs of protein for just over the recent price for the beef package I used to get! You live in the desert with population not much because it'sall you can afford and there's few (if any) major natural disaster threats, nothing grows in sand, it's 126+ degrees in the shade in July, viable water is not guaranteed to you, and you'll never have a cellar because it's very costly to dig deeper than the caliche bedrock (about 3-6ft down). Welcome to my world. It's at least somewhat affordable. Comparatively. Though it's definitely "Mad Max" territory. There's an increasing number of people who just can't relate to other than bare minimum survival based prepping. You have a homestead. Good for you. But please have mitigation and back-up plan(S), as in hopefully more than a few options, and are prepared for when the luxuries you take for granted that others don't have... catches up with you. Maybe it's different for you folks in the States, but here in Canada the MAJOR factor in our food prices going up is the cost of fuel. Farmers need fuel for their equipment. You need fuel for the trucks to pick up the ripe produce and deliver it to factories for processing, or to centres for cleaning and packaging. Then the goods have to be delivered by trucks to the stores and outlets where we can purchase the food. And with our smaller population, many of our remote towns and villages pay a hefty price for goods. Luckily most of them, like you, can produce a lot of their own fresh food and will can it themselves, but our growing season is a lot shorter, so we have to rely of imports which are trucked in. And with so many being out of work for so long, times are very tough already. And we are facing more tax increases on our gas and oil usage. Most of our politicians have never had to shop for food to feed their families, and I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, but the road to hell is filled with good intentions. You cannot save the world by starving people.

A very nice sentiment, but it would have to shipped by trucks, which use fuel. I don't know what you pay, but to fill our car (about once a week) it's $100 Cdn (about $75 USD). And trucks use diesel, which is more expensive. Oh, that $100 we spend weekly used to be about $55 a couple of years ago. YES on all accounts of what you are saying!! I moved back to Sweden to be closer to my kids when/if things "go south". Originally from the US but, have lived here, there and everywhere before my kids were born and, after they'd moved out... Anyhow, I'd like to push the benefits of animal fats even further... Animal fats and especially lard has so many uses, other than just for food. Making something more resistant to water, boots, jacket, tarps, etc... Greasing moving parts such as hinges, machinery and more. Protecting metal/iron tools and other things outside against rust. There are so many things you can use pig lard for. But yes, food is the main reason I'm stocking up on it. However, there are many even us preppers that don't know that solid animal fats such as lard, tallow and other fats that turn solid when at room temperature, including our old bacon grease, is renewable... Or, better said, washed if smelling off, rancid miss colored etc. All you need is a large cooking heavy bottom pan/pot, water and a means to boil your water/fat. How to... empty/pour your not so good or nice fat into a pan, add water about 3 times the amount of fat and bring to a boil. No need to stir since the fat will always float on top of the water. Just make sure your pot doesn't boil over... Once you've let your fat/water boil for about 5 minutes, which also melts the fat , turn off the heat and let it fully cool down. I usually do this during the winter if needed, since I can put the whole pot out on my back porch and the cold temperature out there will cool down the water/fat faster and also make the "fat lid" harder. When your fat layer has solidified, remove the whole "cake" from your pot, turn it over and scrape off whatever residue if any, that hasn't sunk to the bottom of the water/pot. Pour out the water and wash the pot, put your solid fat cake back in the pot and fill with clean water again, repeat above procedure until fat is nice, white and sweet smelling once again. I do this also with the cans of bacon grease I tend to collect/save. I take that brownish smelly gunk and boil the daylights out of it, until it's pure, white and doesn't even smell like bacon anymore... Once you've determined that your fat is clean, put only the fat cake into a clean pot and slowly bring it to a simmer. Not boil... Keep an eye on it and you will see tiny bubbles rising from the bottom of the pot. That is the water bubbling off/out of the washed fat. Make sure to only simmer and watch. Stirrig is ok but, I prefer just watching it so not to disturb the bubbles and thinking it's done. Once it has stopped bubbling, remove the pan from the heat right away and pour into clean, dry and hot caning jar/container. Put on lid, ring and let sit. If using a caning jar/lid/ring, it will seal due to it's hot. Also known as open kettle caning. If you accidentally scorch your fat while simmering/boiling out the water, repeat the "washing" again until clean. Sorry this is so long but, this is how I do it...

@@reginaw5324 Yes, I do believe in sharing knowledge. We can learn so much from each other. We all hold somewhere in our memories, tiny pieces of the larger knowledge base. And, if we don't share that knowledge with each other, those skills will be lost forever. I was fortunate enough to get to know a sweet elderly couple when I was younger and I loved going over for visits, and helping them out whenever I could. At the same time, literally soaking up as much "old knowledge" as I possibly could. They soon realized that I was very interested in learning how things were done way back when and, made a point of teaching me as much as they could, before they passed on. They also gave me quite a few of their old worn out books with detailed instructions on how to do so many things. Things that we as "modern" beings haven't even thought of something one could do, or even the use of many of the handcrafted items. Same with the howtos, when you can't just go to a store and buy what you need. I am so happy that my 3 now adult children have followed in the footsteps of their at times "crazy" mother and that my wonderful daughter in-law comes out here to the homestead for a few days, at least twice a month to both learn and help me out with whatever I need help with. She calls it a "break" from her hubby (my son😁) and my 1 yr. old granddaughter but, I know that she really wants to learn as much as she can while I'm still around... I'm the one out here that is "prepping" for the whole family. Kids, partners, an old male friend of mine and one grand-baby. Kids and my friend pitch in when they can or, give money if they don't have time to come out to help, so that I can buy the things and food items, that we'll most likely need "in the future". My homestead is where my kids grew up and they all still have their bedrooms upstairs on the second floor. It still looks exactly like when they flew the coop. I just shut the door to the stairs leading up to the second floor, since I don't need that much space for myself, my dog and cats. Plus, it's just more to clean and more expensive to heat during the winter... 😉

You do realize that most dry cat and dog food labeled beef is actually horse meat right? They get their beef from horse auctions and the only thing that does not go into it is if there is cancer on the horse, they cut that out and process the rest. I use bay leaves in all my dry cat and dog food. It keeps the weavals out.

I’ve done so many of the things you suggest for all of my adult life (over 50 years now), but I have gotten a great deal from your videos, too. I had never ground my own wheat, until I saw a video where you were talking about it, which prompted me to buy over 200 pounds of wheat and a grain mill. My pantry has tripled in the last 3 years, and I have rediscovered my love for canning. I am lucky to live in an area of NW Illinois, where I have been able for most of that time to live near a local butcher. I had a conversation with the owner of the one who is only a few blocks from me, and he tells me that he sources his meat from local farmers, which makes me very happy. (My Dad and my Grandfather were farmers.) It is so easy to order a ¼ or ½ a beef. He even offers monthly bundles. We grow most of our own tomato products, too. There are some things that I don’t (or can’t) produce, but that is ok, too. I am very fortunate to have the abundance that I have, but you have played a big part in making me aware of what is going on with our food supplies, and I thank you for it very much. ❤️

Coffee, I'm learning to appreciate instant. It lasts forever especially if you buy it in a glass jar or a mylar bag. Some brands actually sell it in mylar bags here in the UK. I think the trick to instant is to try a few different brands until you find one that you actually like. (My favorites are Taster Choice and Nescafe) Beef is pretty much out of our budget here in England. We can afford ground beef about once a week, but unless it's on sale/offer or I find it in the reduced/clearance section, we don't buy actual cuts of beef. It doesn't help that a lot the beef here is aged which makes it even more expensive. I'm keeping my eyes out, I'd love to get some beef into jars to put in my pantry.

@@angelal6700 In the UK, restaurant supply stores are not open to the public. The tax that is paid on what is bought there is different, so you actually need to be able to show that you are running a food based business to shop there. Even Costco is limited to certain trades (types of businesses) so costco is out too. It doesn’t really matter, I just try and do my best with what is available.

I like that you are talking about being responsibile to shop sales, make your own meals etc. Convenience items have never been higher and yet there are plenty of ways to stay away from those aisles. I tire of people who complain about prices and do nothing. And we can gripe that prices are higher but virtually throughout time.....things have gotten more expensive. I don't see prices falling, with manufacturing, cost of goods.....because even if they do, these companies are now used to charging and people paying. Since 2019, I have kept our food bill stable by shopping local, cooking our meals based on sales for the week and supplementing with a small garden. Yes, it takes some work, but our forefathers worked harder to bring food to the table and make ends meet. It's called common sense.

That canned cat food from Sam’s that is now $42.48 a case used to be under $30 until about 2021. I have a retirement rescue home for cats who had health or behavioral issues and this didn’t get adopted. The prices on cat food and litter is KILLING my budget. I put more money towards them than I do myself because of the increase prices. And the catfood is so hard to track down. Only one Sam’s store in my very large city even carries the pate. Same price bumps on dry food which I do keep a six month supply of.

There are a lot of homemade cat food recipes on youtube that save you a lot of money, if you feel up to it. It's generally chicken thighs and livers, which are cheap. You just need to add a handful of supplements and the overall cost is much lower than buying the cheapest cat food, and much more healthful.
@thecatniplife

@@ununhexium on the face of it you’d think that would be the case but I’ve done that and it doesn’t cost less than canned by the time you’ve made it a food with all the nutrients in it for them. Figure in your time and the costs goes up further. The meat costs are going up as fast as the pet food costs because that’s what’s driving a lot of the the increase for everything. Even chicken livers are over $2 a lb here. Also my cats won’t eat it. Have tried several times. Then there’s also the need to have at least a six month supply on hand for preparedness. Factoring needing to can it for that purpose the costs go up even more. I don’t trust using a freezer since our grid has proven itself to be unreliable during weather events. I just end up putting the money towards their needs and cook more beans for myself.

Living in South Korea, I don’t have nearly the food concerns I did in US. Food is grown MUCH closer to consumers. Every neighbor in our new neighborhood has a garden. They garden in the govt land at the curb right outside the community. Just about every plot of land, someone gardens. Govt let’s ppl garden on land for free!! We live in a small area with plenty of meat animals. Just heard the cows in the distance walking around our village this morning. I had a nicely stocked pantry in US. Vacuum sealed and canned and stocked up on shelf stable foods and shipped it to Korea! Some was expired by the time we got it as the transition to Korea, buying a house and receiving our shipment took longer than expected. Expiration dates, those are just suggestions right??? 😂 we have Korean Costcos that carry USDA ground beef and a few cuts. I need to get to canning some. Had to give away my meat I had canned in US. Our biggest threat is the idiot to our North. Preps won’t help us much as we’ll be evacuating if something happens. We just planted a fig tree and 4 blueberry bushes in our yard. Hope to get some fruit next year. But I shipped over my jelly and jams I canned in the US. Long term canning is not really a thing here in Korea. But they do make things for faster consumption so jars are plentiful over here, albeit expensive.
