@@girlnextdoorgrooming My local store stopped carrying it, but one a little further away had a new brand. I bought one to try and it was pretty good. I mean it’s different from fresh milk but good to have in a SHTF situation. I initially bought one case of whole milk and one case of 2% online and had delivered to the local DT store that I’m going to have to start using up.

Thxs for this post and everyone’s input! I read them all and would add: In addition to buying wild caught salmon or Tuna in a can , wild caught sardines in water is also an option for human and pet consumption. Trader Joe’s sells the sardines in water still at a good price. Additionally, I purchase raw honey, olive and sesame seed oil, coconut oil and ghee which is less expensive to make than buying. You can brush your teeth with coconut oil or olive oil just do not put it down the drain. Instead of/or in addition to paper plates, parchment paper set on anything that will support it will work as a plate/eating dish!

One day I felt very pleased, looking at my stored food items, for emergencies. Yep! I have a few hundred pounds of rice, same with assorted dried beans, about 100 lbs of assorted dry pasta, powdered milk, cream, all types of powdered dairy, bread mixes, powdered eggs, about 2000 tea bags, and the list goes on….. I have cases of propane, large tanks filled, then I realized, if I don’t get a very large supply of water, I will still starve to death ! I live near a military base that has poisoned all the wells and the water shed around it, so I do not drink ANY water from the spigot. I buy all my ice and water for ingesting. I will only bathe in the house water. So I go through gallons of water every week. It is very hard for me to stock up, because I use it so quickly. I am a senior citizen, and I do not drive, so I have to depend on my son to pick up my water for me. He thinks I am crazy for not drinking the tap water, and he thinks I am crazy for stocking up for emergencies- God forbid I ever call it prepping for when the SHTF, he would have me committed in a heartbeat. Before anyone asks, no, he does not listen to the news, or read a newspaper (it is “too negative, and I don’t need the negativity in my life”). Basically I have raised an ostrich. 🙄

Well Cyann I live with my 89 yo mother who watches Fox News all day and night. Don’t misunderstand me, I bleed red and not blue however I wish my mom would become an ostrich some days. She truly never shuts up and she is enraged over the news 24/7. I hold up my hand and tell her to talk to it as I am tired when I get home from work and I don’t want to hear it. I hear/watch news on the Fox app so I know what’s going on. I also do some prepping and I applaud your commitment and tenacity. When SHTF happens people like your son will be glad you did all the hard work. God bless you. If I lived around you I’d take you to the store and help you with the water. Hi Leisa. I get a very generous OTC allowance from my insurance every month. I get anything that I really need first, then I use the rest of the allowed money to stock up on medical and personal supplies. I also use it to get needed canes. I now have 3 extra canes in my prepper closet along with pain meds, toothache meds, vitamins and other things. Anyone who has a secondary Medicare insurance plan should have some kind of OTC allowance each month. It really helps me out with my prepping supplies. If anyone is unsure if they have this, call your insurance company. They will walk you through how to sign up for it. It is a blessing to have this every month.

I make my own creamer, perhaps you may like it. 1 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon cinnamon dissolved in 1 cup water over medium-low heat, allow to cool and add to 1 quart of half n half or heavy cream. For flavoring adding real vanilla per your taste. Or switch it up and use real peppermint extract or pumpkin spice. I do use all organic products to avoid the nasties.
@cheerio3847
@cheerio3847 2 жыл бұрын
I'll try that. My backup coffee creamer is sweetened condensed milk diluted with 3 or 4 cans water with vanilla and cinnamon added. The cinnamon clumps and is a pain so I'm going to try cinnamon sticks next time, but maybe I'll try your trick heating it up first - maybe heat one of the cans of water to get it into suspension before adding to the rest. This way i've got something pretty shelf stable until I open the can. The backup for this backup is the powdered stuff!
@lonigirl8807
@lonigirl8807 2 жыл бұрын
@@cheerio3847 it wouldn't clump if you add the water(teaspoon) to the cinnamon a little at a time. Then, add the rest of the water. Or add it to hot water, let cool and then add it to the milk.

Another great video! I sometimes think this is what has cause a lot of people to get overwhelmed..trying to do it all at once & get it (what everybody else has gotten) all at once. As you say..we all prep differently according to our needs & tastes. When I began this journey..i would start with 2 of any item..lets say coffee. When I used ONE I`d buy 2 more. Everytime I` d use ONE of anything..rather than just replacing it with one..I`d replace with 2. (now we`re talking an affordable item not steaks or anything LOL). I soon had a years supply of coffee and I am still doing the same. Use1 buy 2. You`d be surprised how fast your pantry will fill! Enjoy the vid as always! Have a great weekend

Something else to consider. You know how germy you can feel when you first get a cold -- put some hand sanitizer on your hands and then your face around your nose. Really helps. I also make hydroxychloroquine - basically citrus, which is another good thing to have in your canning pantry (oranges, basic fruit). So, to make hydroxy, I take the peels from 3 pink grapefruit and 3 lemons. Put them in a pot and fill it with water to just over the peels. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 3 hours (do not take off the lid). Let it cool down completely, then, take the lid off, drain & filter the liquid into a container. I squeeze out any extra liquid in the cooked peels. I then put the liquid into ice cube trays, freeze them, then put the cubes in a freezer bag. They're great to throw into a cup of boiling water with a little honey & optional alcohol (hot toddy). Love your videos!

Most of us here know the basics - but one lesson that I learned from Superstorm Sandy - stress means you want EASY. So I make sure to buy the convenience foods along with the more nutritious & LTS foods. The other day I bought pizza crust mix in a pouch! I would’ve never been caught dead doing that during my “from-scratch-only” days. But I’m stressful situations, you need the energy for other stuff & you’re just very emotionally drained from things you never thought of before -- eg having to totally manage every single item that comes in/out of the cooler (bc power is out for days), when your kitchen is a usually a “help yourself to anything 24/7” kitchen.

This is a good reminder. I used to have a few days of "just add water" and the like types of food for exactly that. The first few days can be the most stressful. Over the years, I've quit replenishing them. It's time to think about those again. Thank you!

Great reminders, especially about our pets. If you can, and you feed outside birds don't forget them They endure the storms and heat and cold too. the joy they can bring to your family may be the bright point on an awful day. If you garden, purchase an extra packet of seeds and store carefully if you don't save seeds. If you live in a cold climate, consider looking into 'winter sowing' for a January/February activity for yourself or for little ones--or to grow seeds without lights and heat. Consider purchasing a pair of socks/underwear/gloves or hat each month. Add them to a care box that you can drop off at a shelter or church during the winter season. Or you can create a hygiene box instead.

We stock up loads of items. My husband is the coffee drinker. So what I have him doing is, our machine uses regular coffee and k-cups. We stock both, but I told him to use the k-cups the most. Reason: If by some chance we lost power, I can make coffee on the grill, fire, camp stove, etc.... That way he doesn't use up all our coffee supplies. I have powdered creamer stocked for his coffee as well. When I explained my reason, he so got it. And now uses mostly the k-cups. Pet food- dogs have a year supply of canned as well as a 6mos. supply of hard.- Rabbit- 1 year supply.- Cockatiel- at least 2 years. (we keep his food in the freezer and fill his container when it needs it)- Cats - 1 year supply. - Ducks/Chickens 6 mos. - Goats (2 boys) Hard to stock pile their food as they only eat peanut hay. But we try to keep 3 mos. on hand. The price of peanut hay is crazy now. Over $22 a bale. Our boy goats do not eat grain as per our large animal vet. She says it's not good for boy goats as it causes issues with their kidneys. Our boys got sick on regular hay. So a no go on that. The way I can and garden is by the year. I grow enough green beans to last 2 years and so on. That way I can keep my garden beds rotated. So the green bean bed will be used for something different the next season and so on. We grow enough greens in the fall/winter to feed the ducks/chickens. I bag and freeze for them to have something cold in the summer months. Plus they get it fresh from the garden. I could go on and on. But we live in Florida so I have been prepping for over 40 years. Never know what the weather is going to do. So we always try to cover all the corners. Great vid.

UK a viewer here. I buy a large bag of ‘plain’ nuts every month, a different variety each time (almonds, walnuts, pecans, cashews, blanched peanuts, brazils coconut, ) as they’re an excellent source of protein if meat ir fish becomes scarce, too expensive. I make a big mixed tub up with all the varieties plus raisins and choc chips, and we snack on that whilst watching movies etc in the evening. And as you suggest, I backfill the bags so I always have about three months supply.

I am rewatching this because we are in the midst of hurricane season here on the gulf coast. I just tweaked my Amazon subscription list yesterday! I added a few few things and changed the timing on a few others. I added coffee filters, already get my coffee there! Yes, we have backup coffee! I also have permanent filters but prefer the paper ones. I added 325 mg aspirin, both of us take it on Dr's orders. I like Cleancult products and I subscribe to the dish soap, laundry soap, and dishwasher tabs. I have switched to bar shampoo instead of liquid. I am on a mission to eliminate as many plastic bottles as possible! As for pet foods, my backup plan is to make if I can't go out to get it at some point. I have a vet approved recipe as I once had a dog with severe skin allergies. Even the specialty food didn't help. When I cooked for him, he was fine. It is mainly rice with some type of protein - chicken leg quarters are cheap, add some animal fat, and vegetables such as carrots, green beans, sweet potato etc. No corn! He was allergic. I need to get some candles, just in case. I do have solar lights from $Tree. Some of them need replaced. I keep the battery banks for the phones charged up this time of year. Time for more charcoal too.

If you like the flavor of real vanilla try adding vanilla beans to your coffee (either beans or pre-ground) &/or whipping cream powder. Let it sit to give the vanilla time to permeate the coffee or whipping cream powder. Same basic idea as making vanilla sugar. You can also do it with cinnamon sticks, dried mint, etc.

I totally agree with your comments regarding the chemical flavor of fancy creamers. Stopped using them years ago and went to plain old heavy cream. Another advantage is no sugar in heavy cream.

Not many prepper channels talk about Pet food, I'm glad you mentioned it. If you have a year supply of food your animals should also have a year supply of food.

Just be sure you don't stock dried foods for longer than that. I have seen many preppers cover that and kibble goes rancid.

I've been using the pure Hershey's cocoa to put in my coffee. just half a spoon does the trick. it's the kind you bake with.

Milk(or cream) gets sweeter when it's cooked. It's why the uht shelf stable boxed milk, and the heavy cream powder, taste sweeter than normal refrigerated milk

I buy some sort of paper product every month, whether it is facial tissue, napkins or paper plates or tp. I buy some sort of bulk seasoning/flavoring. That rice will taste a lot better with flavor added. I look for good quality pasta on sale. White vinegar is another item I buy regularly. I use it for cleaning as well as canning.
