Excellents tips. I also like your response to DJs who think they know the music better than their audience and must impose their tastes on them. You know that kind of DJ who feels cursed because he never finds his audience and experiences very long minutes or hours on an empty dance floor. “The DJ must play the music that the dancers expect.” If the song you are playing is emptying your dance floor, change it as quickly as possible to choose a song that will fill it again. This advice is worth all the others in my humble opinion. Thanks

I started in the mid 80's on Vinyl and I was trained by another DJ who I shadowed. I only ever DJ'd at private functions and I love DJ'ing Weddings

My first gig I knew I had to go from serato to rekordbox as I was playing on an XZ, I had change to the software and buy new decks. I practiced and then went to a pirate studio to see what a pioneer set up was like and made sure my USB worked, made me feel a lot more confident and when I went to the gig and got going I felt relaxed as I knew the gear and how it worked 😊

Another great video loaded with fantastic info. One thing if you've mostly been a controller DJ, look out for this! I had my first ever outing on Pioneer CDJs last year (for a 3hr set) & had to adjust to the sheer responsiveness of the CDJs. Not that my controller at home & mobile is noticeably laggy but OMG the difference was like night & day. My next 'first' is in July, playing the biggest club of my life, just a 45 minute set but I'm opening the night (eek!). Then the next day I'll be spinning on a main stage at a festival right in the city centre. I can't wait!!!!

Update! It was last night. So how did it go? Put it this way, if it could go wrong it did 🤣 I got to the venue 40 minutes before opening time. I couldn't see the event organiser anywhere so introduced myself to a staff member. She said ok great you're doing the opening set. But where's your equipment? Me: erm? Her: it says on our planner the DJs are bringing their own decks etc. is one of the other DJs bringing it down now? Me: not as far as I know! Is the organiser around? Her: not yet. I suppose it won't be a problem to bring out 2 cdjs & a mixer. A while later a cdj & mixer appeared. They were searching frantically for another. I was told one would soon be arriving from across town. The organiser appeared. I updated her & the venue showed her the email where they read that we'd be bringing our own playout kit. Whoops. A guy hooked up the CDJs, linked them together & got power on. I checked my usbs & all was good. Wait I can't hear either deck in my IEMs WTH? Checked the back of the mixer.... No RCA cables 🤣 So off someone popped to find some RCAs. Meanwhile I noticed the deck brought from across town was randomly rebooting. Oh my god will this ever end? Then that deck just died & wouldn't power back on. Not to worry - a man emerged carrying a pioneer XDJ all in one controller yay! They got it hooked up & I play tested in my headphones. Oh yeah we're on now!!! Not quite. First the staff had to figure out how to get the xlr wall jacks the xdj was plugged into, onto the PA system. This took like ten minutes or more. Finally I'm on! Dancing broke out all around me. The setup was a lot like a boiler room gig with dancers 2 feet away. The vibe was immense! Because of the late start I thought it best to hand over to the next dj earlier than my full hour & off they went, saying they'd loved my set (coming from someone who's played WHP I call this a compliment!!!). They mixed seamlessly from my last track & the vibe just kept going. I was bouncing! The next dj wasn't used to pioneer gear at all so they asked if I'd help. I said of course whatever I can do just yell. And they did. I helped them sort a minor thing out - all was good. Til the PA started cutting out. First we lost the subs then a zone here or there would go in & out. Amps overheating? The venue staff did their best but I don't think they were experienced sound techs. The problems worsened so the solution was to play much quieter. The lower volume was too low & the once buzzing crowd started to drift away. It shouldn't happen to a DJ, but just goes to show as Phil often says you should prepare for disaster & get experience playing on as much different kit as possible. My last resort would've been to use that single deck to play one of a few pre-recorded emergency mixes from USB & use Fx to bridge into another. I said if it came to that though, no way was I gonna stand there & mime 🤣 Anyway it was still absolutely epic for me & I was privileged to have been offered that spot among such incredible talent. Not just that but thoroughly humble & genuine people. Keep on inspiring us Phil & keep us all on the right side of what makes the best DJs so good!

Oh btw why wasn't I carrying a set of RCA cables. I'm not naming the venue but I honestly assumed none of these things would be a problem there. Now there's a lesson I'll never forget!

I'm going back to DJing after 3 yrs out. It's a friend's wedding. At the moment I'm calm. But I know the nerves will strike probably a week before. I used to be fairly confident before I teamed up with a so called friend , he DJ,d differently to me . Used auto mix in VDJ. Where as I beat/energy and popularity mixed. I had play lists in my head 5/6 usually about 15 mins long didnt fast mix as gigs were usually weddings and social events But he managed to knock my confidence so much I know stress about what/where and when to play a track. The only way I see out of this lack of confidence is going back to how I used to work.

First gig was back in the 80's and I was terrified, all very old school, bought kit from an ad in the paper including a powerful 130w McGreggor belt drive console and 2 x HH speakers. I put an ad in the paper and got a wedding gig. Didn't have the confidence to speak on the mic. Just tried to play great music and I imagine I was clueless and appalling.

My friend had a dj gig for a school dance….he didn’t know it was a Christian school and he played “Sexual Healing” and “my neck, my back”. 🤦🏽‍♂️😂🤣 either he forgot or they failed to mention that. He said they all had a good time though.

My friend played a Christian gig and was asked to avoid swearing, unfortunately he was the kind of personality you didn't tell not to do something. He therefore chose to open his set with the dialogue from the very start of the Pulp Fiction soundtrack album, which if you know it, you'll know was quite a provocative thing to do!

What makes me feel uneasy is getting paid low. But you gotta do it so you can get to the bigger gigs
@allentastic

Why does getting paid low make you uneasy early in your career? If your resume is “blank,” you’re essentially asking the promoter/venue/whoever is hiring you to gamble on you.
