Waiting 3 hours outside in the corral before the race is just insane. I waited 15 minutes to start my one and only marathon😂 Thanks for the snapshot of all the logistics.

I haven't run a marathon yet, but did my first half at Royal Parks in October. I can testify that having your name on your vest and having random strangers scream encouragement to you absolutely makes a difference. I would never have believed that, but you can't help but feel better from the positive vibes. It does also made pacing harder, as I found out to my cost 😅

I just came back from the NYC marathon too. Your advice is spot on. Another important note is if you’re from a more humid environment, you may not realize how much you are sweating on the course, and dehydration can seek up on you. That happened to me, and I had some pretty severe nausea at the end. Also, bring from Alaska, it was a pretty warm day for me; summertime like temperatures.

I had so much fun at my first marathon in NYC. I think the organizers do a good job managing the insane logistics of shutting down part of the city and having 50k people run through it but yeah there's a lot for everyone to keep up with to make it happen. I intentionally did not put my name on my shirt because the cheering is enough and I cant handle even more stimulation. The city's energy is incredible though. Its true too that if you are wearing a medal, people will let you have the last seat in a crowded subway and comp you a drink. Experienced both myself. NYC is great.

It'll be my wife's first Half and, hopefully, a big PB attempt for me (high confidence of that with Phily B's coaching behind me!) Knowing the kind f things to look out for will be key to as little stress as possible!

San Diego RnR marathon is 330m up and 400m down and the gib hill (163 freeway) is after mile 21. But that is not the hardest part - after mile 9 the marathon splits from the half and it feels like running in the wrong direction as suddenly all the spectators are gone.

Oh funny re tip about the cups, but practicing the hydration method is important. I ran London last year and I became dehydrated because the bottles, which I’ve never used them, were discarded like I do cups - as soon as I reach the end of the hydration tables. So I tossed them half full (did not occur to me to hold on to them until I finished the bottle until midway through the race)

I was in the same corral as you! I looked for you. Disappointed I didn't see you but not surprised since it's so crowded at the start and everywhere along the course as well! I had such a great time and was so happy to finish. You both did a great job with your finish time. It's really not known as a PR course! I'm 62 years old and this was my dream come true marathon. Also my last. Such an amazing time! 🎉 Congratulations to you both 🎉!

Thanks for sharing, some really important points here that race organisers should pay attention to. I recently did Melbourne marathon which was great course and race, but so many things that were missing from the website - e.g no mention that you get a race finisher t-shirt so loads of runners didn't know to go to get one!

Congratulations to you both. Loved watching both of your race vlogs. I recently did the Sydney Marathon, which has been nominated to be a future World Major, hoping to get that status in the next 2 years. Sydney, a stunning place to run, this course was also quite undulating and had a lot of tight turns and switchbacks, making it tricky for rythm and also tough on the legs in the latter stages. But like you said, you do your homework on the course, prepare and run accordingly. Well done again and keep on doing what you're doing. Very inspiring 🎉

Doing my first full marathon next April in Manchester and will see how the experience goes, fingers crossed😂. I know the cost can be massive but i believe it's the whole experience, your not just paying for the run, your going to New York for Christ sake!!! 😂 love your channel, looking forward to everything you experience next year in Boston. All the best. X

One other tip for NYC - take a large safety pin. At the start they give out Dunkin beanie hats for free. If you take a safety pin you can attach the beanie to the back of your running belt so you have a souvenir. You can’t really carry it in your hand or wear it for the whole of the marathon.

Love it, I’d like to add a comment about people cheering you on. It’s amazing to hear people cheering you on, but they won’t do it if your running next to someone in a costume I recently did the great south run in Uk (10 miles, not a marathon) and all I could hear was ‘GO ON SPIDER-MAN, YOU CAN DO IT!!!’ Never mind the sweaty mess that’s next to him called Paul eh 😂 Yes, I was jealous 😂

It needn't be over-expensive Big 6 city marathons leaving a carbon footprint of a Yeti and a hole in the bank account. I personally think of hidden scenic marathon gems like the spectacular Eryri marathon in Wales. A nice local summer marathon in cool Scandinavia which I wish to revisit anyways? Or, right today Nov 12 a buddy runs the ORIGINAL Marathon in Greece. Flight for xx (!) Euros from Germany and he rented a whole holiday house(!) for some more days DIRT cheap because it's absolutely out of season. Cheaper than a day in the Major cities. Or a very local, scenic one near to your place?

This is why I really have no desire to do these large point to point races like Boston and NY. The logistics take much of the fun away for me at least. There are plenty of bigger races where you can still navigate everything easier.

Interesting, I ran my first marathon this year through charity at Boston. And I thought it was amazing the crowds, the energy I’ve run plenty of smaller races and triathlon in the small town field is nice but I thought it was tremendous running at Boston.

I live right outside NYC, I will probably run it next year just because it's there, but it will probably be one and done. It does seem like a pain and we have plenty of good marathons around here with beautiful courses that you can just sign up to and go. Frankly a lot of the people who hyper-focus on the 6 majors to the exclusion of any other races kind of give me the creeps.
