1. Make runs feel harder 2. Change the terrain and/or elevation 3. Safely increase volume 4. Learn relaxation techniques 5. Prioritize consistency above all else 6. Figure your body out 7. Feel good, run good 8. Remove time pressure Fuel well

Why was the 6 hours sleep a thing? Classic 6 day races didn't work like that, so why did it become a thing?

Most beginners just walk a marathon so it's basically a walkathon then posts so many bullschits on social media.

I agree that harder speedier sessions definitely make your regular runs feel much easier. 💛

Great video with useful advice, thanks. Increasing my protein intake even by a small percentage made a huge difference. Removing a run and introducing a strength and conditioning in its place improved my mechanics and movement in my hips.

I've got a cycling bib that says "it never gets easier, you just get faster". The high end (zone 4 or 5) is always going to be hard. But if you're consistent, what used to be your zone 4 speed will become zone 3 or zone 2. I do group bike rides and noticed my heart rate in September was much lower on the exact same routes than it was in April, even with the rides getting slightly faster!

10 months in an I look forward to each run. Took about 4 -5 month of consistently before my mind and body got to running being easier.

Running has always been challenging for me. I’m naturally heavier and slower, which is why I gravitated toward powerlifting and strength-based sports. But yesterday, I tried running with a metronome, and it completely changed the experience. It helped me focus on my cadence and turnover, keeping me in rhythm. Surprisingly, concentrating on the metronome also calmed and relaxed me. Not only was I faster, but the run felt so much easier!

It’s funny when I first started running I went and got this guy that I knew as a coach. He happened to been also a barefoot runner so I used to tell me that if you run, barefoot your feet will tell you when you’ve gone too far cause I didn’t do that back then but but he said every time he wants to increase his distance since he goes back to barefoot runner, he said because his feet would let him know. OK that that was enough. He said it soon as your form falls apart, but I learned a lot from him. He like the first year running I stuck to that 10% and specially the 10% rule on long runs and he had another rule two of your long run could only be 30% of your weekly mileage and so that kept that attractive, and but by the end of that year, I could runhalf a marathon decently strong for a new runner and and I really build up to it. Well volunteer. I did a marathon two marathons and then I moved over to ultras so I learned a lot from him. He was really disciplined. He was a military guy and and that’s how he coached and so he was good. Great video. I really like this one made me think back.

During my long run today I used a meditation technique. I noticed where I felt uncomfortable, thought that’s interesting and let it go! Surprisingly the uncomfortable bit moved around and I felt fine when I’d finished even if it was cold and wet! 😂

Apropos of Mary's relaxation strategies, I've found that relaxing your gaze--that is to say, ALMOST (but not QUITE, 'cause that'd be dangerous) closing your eyes while running--just. Feels. So. GOOD! Did it yesterday during my half-marathon pace practice and it instantaneously calmed me down AND invigorated me.

For me... If it feels easy, I didn't push myself hard enough and I feel like it was a wasted run (even if it actually wasn't)

Recently, I've been finding it difficult when I get to the last rep on my threshold intervals. Brain telling me my legs are too weak to maintain that pace for those last 8 minutes. Definitely helped to drop the pace by 5 or 10 sec per km, just to let my HR move away from the LT2. Also increasing the recovery from 90s to 2 or 3 mins. Great tips and advice! =D

I was in a similar state until I had an in-person session with my coach. She pushed me to complete the last interval where I might previously have given up. She commented afterwards that I was not really running hard enough because I was smiling and able to talk after the last interval. It was a bit of a wake-up call. A couple of weeks later, I'm running much further (70km per week at present) and running my marathon goal pace intervals 15-30 seconds faster than the target. I also switched my Garmin from %MaxHR to %HRR, which gave me much more room to run faster in the Z2 easy runs.

Your point of how relevant our believe of what is possible, is influencing what is actually possible, reminds me of how George Dantzig "accidently" solved two long standing math problems, because he thought it was this weeks class assignment hah

I have a good habit of going to a walk at lunch time to break up the work day. During warmer, New England months I go for walks after dinner to help the digestion as well. Between that and my running 35 miles on average per week, I'm at 15-20k steps per day. The recovery for my legs from the beating I give them is in arguably beneficial. I'm really glad you made this video to make runners on your channel see your good results from walking!
