The McDonald's lawsuit wasn't frivolous. The coffee was nearly boiling and permanently disfigured her legs.

McDonald’s PR worked, because that’s who pushed the narrative that it was frivolous. It was NOT frivolous and it was successful.

Yep. The coffee was so hot that it gave her and 20 or more other people 3rd degree burns in multiple incidents, that McDonald's hid.

It even burned her labias. And all she wanted was for them to cover the medical costs.

TV dinners were a big thing for a short time in the 1960s. Mostly that are a trope or a punchline these days.

Pork meat goes well with anything sweet. Pork chops with apple sauce. Bake ham with pineapple. Bacon with maple syrup. Try it.

That 'people who think that if you're from England you know who the Queen is' remark got me thinking of my sister's stories about being in England and Ireland for one trip in the winter back when she was still in High School. She would say she was from Long Island and people would ask her if she knew Amy Fisher. (Honestly, at this point, just Google her, with safe search on considering she actually turned to porn to pay the bills after her notoriety, but the key point is that to just say that anyone who says they're from Long Island, means either Nassau County or Suffolk County (as the two counties that are part of New York City tend to have people who identify as New York City residents instead) and at the moment they have 2.9 million people there.)

About Hollywood, she is absolutely correct. Hollywood Boulevard with the famous "Walk of Stars" is a shabby, run-down tourist trap. Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills is what most foreigners assume to be "Hollywood". FACT : The world's first aerosol deodorant was Gillette Right Guard released in the early 1960s. Gillette was... and still is... based in Boston. I know you've heard of Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. One other thing. Diane apparently is unaware of the fact that "roll-on" liquid deodorants are rare in the US. Most people currently use solid "stick" deodorant. Some people find the dry stick type to be more environmentally friendly than aerosols.

It is a litigious country and there are millions of lawyers. You would think that the stupid cases in small claims courts are unnecessary. But then I realize that suing someone in court is the civilized way to settle a dispute unlike old times, or as it is done in some places, where prople would duel or kill each other looking for justice or revenge.

TV dinners were something started in the late 50's. They were contained in aluminum pans and heated in the oven (no microwaves back then). But yes Americans do love to cook more than get fast food. Cooking gives us the opportunity to be creative with ingredients and try something different.
@kokoken1

Ah, but some Americans live their lives in such a crazy manner that they have no time to cook. That's why fast-food restaurants and microwavable main courses became so popular. I'm writing this in late June 2024, and a new issue has popped up at most of our fast-food companies. Inflation is hitting so badly that when a meal set at McDonald's or KFC is costing more than $10, many people can't afford $40 for a four-person family. So, now the new thing is "value meals" -- less food for a lower price, like $5 or 6. It's all because of a combination of inflation that's gone out of control plus corporate greed.

The USA has a lot of celebrities, but we are not focused on them. I see celebrities often in places like New York, Philadelphia, Boston, etc. No one goes after them. I've been in elevators with celebrities and have never gushed over them. Americans are not all rich. Most do manage their money properly. Yes, we do use credit, but many use money they have. Yes, there are homeless people in the US, but every circumstance is difference. Back in the 70's and 80s, mental health advocates petitioned for more "freedoms " for the institutionalized, but what happened was thousands were released and wound up on the street. There is also the issue of mental health and drugs affecting these people. And , yes, there are working poor, but each situation is different. There are people who have aspirations of making a career in entertainment and travel to places like Los Angeles or New York. Some people are not financially prepared and to stay in expensive cities and don't have stable employment while trying to find success in entertainment. Chances that you might find yourself homeless is a reality. What you see as American breakfast is not what the average American has daily. Pancakes, sausages, bacon, etc, is more of a weekend item. Many Americans also have a continental breakfast as in Europe. The narrator is going on about cheerleaders in America. Yes, if you are in high school, university, or involved in professional sports. You won't see cheerleaders walking around 24/7. If you are an adult expecting to see cheerleaders, you will appear suspicious. There were cheerleader squads when I attended high school, but I was never part of one. You also have to audition for cheerleader, and you are talented and are selected, you must also keep up with your academic work, or you might be released from the team.

I really like Diane's content because she's very honest about her own personal experiences and misconceptions. She first visited the US at a relatively young age and is open about not being that worldly about it. It's refreshing and she has learned a lot in her travels. I did get a chuckle at you telling us Americans about The Apprentice, just because the show originated in the US and "You're Fired" was famously coined by its host, none other than the former US president and current professional defendant Donald Trump.

The reason Americans have moved away from using spray on deodorants is because the sprays release chemicals into the air and contribute to pollution. Roll-ons and cremes are considered more environmentally friendly.

I think she's getting a lot of her assumptions from tv and movies. Also one part of the US can be totally different from another part. The entirety of the UK can fit in the US state of Wyoming, you can't judge the entire country on just one region, it varies

They talk about celebrities on the news? To be fair, it's been over two decades since I've even seen a TV news program, so for all I know, maybe they *do* do that these days. They certainly didn't back when I used to watch the news on television, back in the 1990s. If they've started doing so now, it might be because nobody actually watches network news anymore. So perhaps it's a stunt they're trying in a vain attempt to get their viewership numbers back or something. Honestly, I'd always been under the impression that celebrity news was a much bigger deal in the UK than it is here. Maybe that's because when I meet British people, they always seem to want to ask me questions about American celebrities I've never even heard of.

Microwave frozen food is not the same as TV dinners which had a piece of meat, vegetables, starch and a little piece of cake or dessert and were cooked in the oven as there were no microwaves in the 1950s and 1960s.

@@annfrost3323 right, but they're essentially the same. Now, you can get the same array in a plastic tray as opposed to aluminum (aluminium for the Brits) that cooks in a microwave instead of oven. Is a Tesla a car? Yes. It's just a different kind of car.

About 32% of Americans own guns. Some (gun owners, usually) will tell you its more like 40%. What throws the statistics off is that a lot of gun owners have multiple guns, even stock piling them.

Diane is Irish. She does an okay job at ------------------------------------ Here's my American perspective on the topic Diane talked about.... the points are long, and I apologize for that..... - LA, and California as a whole, is pretty overrated.... Especially in the past 15-20-25 years..... - I used to care about what celebrities were doing, but not anymore. They don't impact my life in any way...... - there are comparison videos on KZbin to prove, or disprove that notion you have on American food portions vs British food portions - well, American houses are cheaper to build, renovate because some of the building supplies are made in our own country. - that's another point, things seem more expensive in the US, but it differs from state to state due to taxes, or whatever. --For example, a gallon of milk would be $4.50 on California vs $1.90/gallon in Indiana. - Americans don't sue everybody. At least, to me, for something absolutely stupid. Something like medical malpractice, or safety stuff I can understand. I had to get rid of some points as it would've went on a little too long. ----------------------------------- Hopefully, my comment is easy enough to read.
