This is definitely true. 44% of households SAY they have guns within the house in surveys. There are about 120 guns for every 100 people in America. What is noteworthy as well is statistics around who owns guns and why. A huge increase in minorities and women owning guns versus the stereotype of mostly white guys with guns. Also it should be taken into consideration that anyone that illegally owns a gun isn’t going to be answering a poll about it. Many people who legally own a gun also wouldn’t answer such a poll. So it is very likely that far more people own guns than what is reported in polls. I was given a 22 for Christmas when I was 4 years old. Obviously I wouldn’t have been answering polls. My rambling comment is to say, common sense would indicate far more of the population owns guns than any statistics would indicate.

The McDonald's coffee case was actually a legit case. The lady, who was in her 70's, wasn't driving, but a passenger in a parked car. She ended up with 3rd degree burns on her legs, thigh, butt and groin and was in the hospital for 8 days. She had to get skin grafts and was partially disabled for 2 years. Turned out that McDonald's coffee was 180-190 degrees, which was hotter than the industry norm, and that McDonald's had already settled hundreds of cases before this due to people getting injured from their coffee. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZDNkohri555i8k

@St.Maliki2 жыл бұрын
Mainly a big part of the misunderstanding of this case is people don't understand what "punitive damages" actually means. The woman wasn't awarded that crazy amount of money because she went through that amount of pain. It is awarded to her to specifically punish McDonald's and change their ways. If the exact same thing happened at a small coffee shop she would have received less than .01% of what she got. And that much smaller amount of money would compel a small coffee shop to change their ways. But if they penalized McDonald's to pay that much smaller fee they would just go on business as usual, and paying a small fee every now and then. Punitive damages is not meant to make things right between the defendant and the victim, it's to make sure the defendant doesn't continue to do it again and again.

Re The McDonald's case. McDonalds had already burnt and had over 100 complaints to the government about scalding coffee. They were warned numerous times by the Government and told numerous times to reduce the temperature of their coffee or face punishment. They chose to ignore the warnings because they thought scalding hot coffee meant it was more appealing by staying hot longer for people like truckers. The plaintiff was was a 79 year old woman and a passenger in the car. The car was stationary in the drive through not moving. She was handed the coffee through the window and it was so hot it was burning it was painful on her hands as it was so hot heat was radiating through the paper cup. Because the coffee was so hot you could feel it through the cup she had to put she had to remove the lid in order to blow on it to cool it to a drinkable temperature. But since McDonalds filled the cup literally to rim it spilled onto her lap. Scalding hot coffee burned her genitalia requiring painful skin grafts to her private parts. Because the coffee was on clothes it was trap in the fabric and prolonging the damage as opposed to hitting bare skin and rolling or being able to be wiped off. But for McDonalds refusing to lower the temp of coffee and making it so hot that customers needed to remove the lid to blow on it she doesn't get her genitals mutilated. McDonalds knowingly served a dangerous product and recklessly disregarded the safety of the public.

Homelessness in America is almost entirely a mental health problem and that is the result of court decisions from several decades past that restricted the ability to restrict people to asylums unless and until they present themselves as a clear danger to themselves or others. So they're turned out on to the streets because they don't have the ability to maintain steady employment and they fall through the court-created cracks in the social welfare system.

Yep. And also an expensive housing situation. A lot of the homeless people I’ve known are people that suddenly had their rent go up or the owner sold the property and they were kicked out by the new owners. Then once they were homeless they were stuck in a place where they couldn’t afford the cost of current rents after paying lower amounts for years. Working without being able to feel safe and keep up their hygiene also ends up impacting the jobs they do have. A person I knew got fired because they smelled bad after being homeless for a couple of weeks. Obviously after that it was made harder for him to stop being homeless. My family is actually going through something similar right now where the building we’ve been living in for over a decade has been sold and we’ve been told they’re renovating and we can move or switch apartments but pay the current rates. Whether we stay or go that’s 1000 dollars more than what we currently pay. So basically impossible for us. The woman who sued McDonalds over the hot coffee really DID have her labia fused as a result of 3rd degree burns suffered from the coffee. McDonalds had already been sued for similar incidents dozens of times and had nearly always at least agreed to pay the medical expenses of the burn victims. She initially sued for $20k to cover her medical expenses but McDonalds wouldn't offer more than $800. The JURY was responsible for the amount awarded (which was eventually reduced to $640k, from $2.7M). The jury awarded $200k (later reduced to $160k) for direct compensation and an additional $2.7M (later reduced to $480k) in punitive damages, which are, by design, intended to discourage continued bad behavior on the part of the defendant (typically a company). This case is a classic example of proponents of tort reform misleading the public about the specifics of a particular legal case. In this case, they framed the entire conversation as simply some old woman who stupidly spilled coffee on herself and was trying to make a quick buck; the truth was very different.

As an American who grew up in Belgium, my classmates used to ask me if my family owned a ranch or an oil company b/c at the time (dating myself here) Dynasty and Dallas were the big American show imports ... but then when we would go back to the States to visit or for my father's job, Americans wanted to know how we could live in a hut and if having a crocodile as a pet was dangerous. So stereotypical ideas flow both ways. Obviously, we didn't own either a ranch or an oil company, nor did we live in a hut or have a crocodile as a pet. Nowadays with the internet, those obvious generalizations are rarer, but we still have to remind people to take what they view on TV/Internet with a grain of salt ... and not to believe everything that they here about a place or person.
Along with the Fire/Quit lie. We also have "Will to Work" States. Which means if there is no signed contract between employer/employee, that either party can terminate the "work agreement" without stating a reason.
@davidt38922 жыл бұрын
Colorado is considered an "At-Will" state which means you can be fired for no reason. But the employer then has to appeal to work-mans comp. to justify the reason you were fired, if its found you were let go for no reason you will be entitled to 60% of your wage. The amount in which you can claim in compensation is base on how much you have earned in a 6 month period divided by 26 weeks then multiplied by .6 hence the 60%

That does not preclude wrongful termination lawsuits though.

I think gun control will be a thing of the past. Just as improvements in metallurgy made the printing press possible. Improvements in machining and logistics will allow nearly anyone to create gun parts or transport them, making it nearly impossible to stop every single gun part. Now we have 3D Printing completing a large half of what it takes to make a gun, and home metal machining jigs can complete the rest.

hahaha - funny about the firing/quitting part - as some people have already said - that is, basically, true. Maybe people in some middle and upper class jobs have employment contracts with safety-nets built in so they can't just "get" fired, but every job I've ever had so far has been "at will" and that means I can quit for any reason - without prior notice to the employer. I can quit immediately or I can put in two weeks notice (which is the more professional thing to do). The employer can also fire you for whatever reason. I usually give two week's notice if I'm ready to quit. Also, we are a litigious country - and even Americans think people take suing too far. Some people have made a career out of it. Certainly some shady lawyers do. I remember when I lived in London for a bit - I was on a double decker bus and the driver was pulling up to a bus stop with an older lady sitting there and, I kid you not, it was like he was drawn right to her. It looked like he drove the bus into the stand on purpose - the glass shattered around the lady and she had a cut or something on her head. The bus driver was like some foreign guy (maybe African or Caribbean) - he was very nervous. The police were called and we all have to get off the bus. I remember talking to another lady on the bus as we were standing outside just waiting for the next bus - and I said, "Oh wow - this is just crazy. I wonder if she's gonna sue that guy. She definitely can sue the bus company." And the lady looked at me like I was asking her to sell drugs or something, she said, "I'm sorry, we don't do that here." And I was like, "Well, this would be the perfect day to start!" I almost wanted to sue the guy myself - I'd never been in an accident on public transportation before - I was traumatized seeing the bus headed directly towards that lady and seeing all that glass shatter around her. Also - Hollywood is a BIG place - it's not just ONE area. Of course not everything and every neighborhood and every street is gonna be glamorous. Hollywood is a brand. The Hollywood sign is a rickety old sign that is symbolic of what that location is to the entertainment industry. It's iconic - not majestic. I thought it was funny that she thought all of us have guns - no, I would guess most of us don't. But the way things are going - maybe we all should get something! Anyway - another great reaction. I didn't know Dave was a gun owner - I thought firearms were banned in the UK. I would love for you to talk more about this - who is allowed to own guns and what is the process for you guys over there compared to here.

I get mail from attorneys trying to get me to join class action suits all the time. I throw it away. Also how common employment contracts are depend largely on the industry. I work in media. @TodaysSpecialMinis2 жыл бұрын
@@anndeecosita3586 Yeah, lawyers can be a trip sometimes - especially ambulance chasers. When daytime soap opera shows would have characters that got married on the show or had babies on the show (i.e. the fictitious characters were married or had a child as part of the story lines), the network TV stations that broadcast the particular show would receive gifts for those characters from viewers.
