The bless your heart thing is both. It's not just an insult, a lot of non southerners tend to get this wrong. We can say bless your heart if someone (say, a child) gets hurt, or if someone is going through a tough time. Or, as he mentioned in his video, if you're doing/saying something off/stupid, lol. I don't want people to visit the south and receive a genuine bless your heart and think they're being insulted, lol.

To clarify: "Bless Your Heart" CAN mean "oh man how do you even get up and function on a daily basis with that low intellect you are displaying". HOWEVER - that is not the only - nor the original - meaning of the phrase. For generations, southerners have said "bless your heart" to show sympathy or concern for someone who has gone through difficult or challenging circumstances. Or empathy for someone who has inadvertently embarrassed themselves in some way - I mean, we all make mistakes, right? This is actually the more common meaning of the term "Bless Your Heart". Somehow the idea that the phrase is in fact a way to insult someone on the sly has recently gained popularity. And yes, it can mean that. But, as a southerner, I can assure you that most people here do not mean it as an insult.

I unknowingly went to a dry county in TN as well (near Dollywood/pigeon forge), I also knew that they had moonshine distilleries on every corner and assumed it wasn't a dry county because of that. I popped in to a distillery asking to buy a bottle of moonshine for a co-worker back home in FL. They said they were a dry county and not allowed to sell it, but if I purchased a distillery tour for 20.00, I could get a "free" bottle. I told the lady I was in a bit of a hurry and didn't have time for a tour. She said "turn around, see those big tanks, that's our distillery, now what flavor moonshine did you want?" They obviously make the most of the loopholes lol.

The "Barnyard" flea market in Greer, SC (Barnyard flea markets are awesome, btw) couldn't allow animal sales. You could buy a crate though, and they would throw in a free puppy of your choosing. That loophole finally got shut though.

I live in that area of TN. If I ever wanted moonshine though we usually don't buy it from a store or distillery. It's always been for me from people who make it themselves. The biggest thing with the deep south, for me, was the humidity. I worked in Mississippi for 3 weeks in July, once. Within 5 minutes, at 8 am, waiting outside my hotel room on the balcony, I would watch the water/sweat, beading up on my forearms. And after 3 weeks I finally adjusted a little to breathing. Other than that, people were friendly, and curious; asked me what the 'dry' heat in Phoenix was like? 😄 I told them, ac your house down to 78 degrees, (that's room temp in Phoenix) get used to that being the norm, then preheat your oven to 500 and open the oven door. That's What Phoenix feels like in June. Human beings, given enough time can adjust to just about anything. 😁

I honestly didn't think I would get a culture shock because I was born and raised in the US. But when you lived in the most northern New England state your entire life and only have visited New England states, it was a completely different experience. I saw a billboard for Bojangles and I had no idea what in the heck it was 😂😂 (billboards are illegal in my state so that was a whole other thing I had to get used to) but the food was amazing. Most of the people I met gave me that southern hospitality I was thinking of. But yeah, I was not prepared for the regional differences that I experienced and the communities within the communities. The town I live by, Newnan, Georgia the houses in downtown are awesome to check out because during the Civil War, during Gen. Sherman's "March to the Sea" as they went south through from Atlanta to Savannah Georgia, the soldiers torched and burned down several major cities and homes along the way but when they got to Newnan, the didn't do that. The one of the main reasons Newnan was spared is because it was a 'hospital' town treating both Southern and Northern soldiers. So for that reason, some of the houses in and around the Newnan downtown area are some of the oldest and coolest houses in the south. Another great thing about Georgia overall besides the Dawgs, is the film industry. There are tours that will take you to were some of the best movies and TV shows were filmed. Like "Gone with the Wind", "Fried Green Tomatoes", "Walking Dead", most of the MCU movies & series, "Pet Cemetery II", "Zombieland I & II", "The Accountant", and many many more! Georgia is great place to live and to visit, just be careful with the weather!! In the Spring, Fall and Winter, it will be like 30 degrees Fahrenheit or lower in the morning and 80+ degrees Fahrenheit in the afternoon and in the Summer pop-up thunderstorms almost every afternoon. Oh and the food, it is some of the best in the world(for the most part)!!!! Hope to see y'all 'round town some day!!!

I've spent over 20 years living in the suburbs outside Chicago and over 20 living in South Carolina. People down here drive way slower (which is why you made the observation about too many people driving in the left hand lane). Also, there's not as much public transportation down here because we don't have a lot of the mega cities with surrounding suburbs.

This. There's a poster here saying that even though he had a great time visiting The South on several occasions he still thought it was a racist place, and only attributes the "Southern hospitality" he experienced because he was white. That type of thinking is rather rampart in, ironically, people who think they're smart and open minded. There could be a poll on various American regions measuring how racist a region is where, hypothetically, if The South came up as the lowest or second lowest region within the poll people like him would still say "they're nice but .... In NC our liquor laws are good (except in Graham County you can buy from a resort or go north, east, or south to buy). We have ABC stores which is controlled by state government, but there is more pressure on independent stores since the government wasted 1.3million on liquor that some places didn’t sell that kind but would have done great at the other side of the state. Most common is regulated moonshine is not what you get from moonshiners. To regulars of the top shelf moonshiners that they keep and friends and family it’s smooth but the liquor % is up there. The stuff in the store is like a lite beer to them. I had access through a boyfriend then another friend her uncle was still living up in the Appalachians so I’ve had the good stuff.

It depends and the problem is people don’t know a person’s intentions when they see the flag. I wouldn’t say I’m offended by it but if I had a new neighbor put one up I would feel uncomfortable. Some of the people who fly the Confederate flag are racists in that they do believe themselves superior to minorities even if they are cordial. I used to be a reporter and covered a rally David Duke spoke at to support theConfederate flag. Some of the attendees helped me a black woman with my camera equipment then turned around a minute later and cheered as Duke made a bunch of hateful racist comments. Then when he finished they asked me again if I needed help. The irony 😂 Personally I see that flag as anti-American.

I live out in the boonies, eight miles from town and at the end of the road from town there is a sign, EIGHT churches advertised pointing east to west. Eight churches in the boonies. No joke. The liquor laws are strange in the South, much like the "Blue Laws" in Texas. They are a hold over from the religious right (most notably the Southern Baptists). Some counties are wet, some are dry. Some you can buy a "club card" that allows you to buy alcohol in a restaurant in a dry county. Southerners are very traditional and don't let go of their ideals very easily so this practice persists even though it is not terribly practical or effective.
