Another tip for textbooks: Sometimes the textbooks come as custom editions with access codes. Your class may/may not use it. I emailed two of my professors for the upcoming semesters about this and they both told me that we won't be using the codes. So instead of spending $400 on both textbooks in total, I'll be spending around 40. So definitely email your professor if you'll be using the textbook or wait until the first day of classes if you can

MY BEST TIP: Don't buy milk for your dorm! buy one bottle at the beginning of the semester and fill it up at your dinning hall. This tip can be applied to other things like fountain drinks or grab a Ziploc and fill it up with spinach, cookies, Cheerios, fruitloops, potato chips, ect. NO SHAME - everyone in the dinning hall is also broke and feels your pain.

Annemarie Price I definitely recommend that new freshmen be careful with this. Where I go to college they will revoke your meal plan without a refund if they catch you doing something like this. So if you want to do this check the rules and be careful.

My school tried to pull that to my brother in his freshman year. Talk/email whoever's over the meal plans (Residence Life is what my school calls it) and tell them you don't want meals or want a cheaper option. It worked for me.

Why go with a meal plan? It seems like a luxury, just cook yourself and cook in bulk it will save you incredibly much! Also, hope your college experience went well :)

I'm going into my last year of college! Another pro tip is don't buy the books before class starts unless the professor specifically says to. Sometimes they'll put a book on the list because it is required by their department. This way, you won't be wasting money on a book you'll never use. Also, for GE's, rent books! It's waaay cheaper, and you don'y have to bother with holding on to it or trying to sell it later on.

If you’re not worried about being healthy, I’d recommend buying a bunch of food from the dollar menu’s at fast food restaurants and freezing them or just keep them in the dorm. If you can budget $1-$2 per dorm.
