These are such good tips! I had a very similar experience with my roommate freshman year and it was kind of a bummer but really helped me learned to live with someone :) Oh and the cleaning your room and making your bed everyday tip is SO important and nice to come home and be stress free!

as somebody who lived in the dorms and is now living off campus in a house, my advice is to BUY AN ELECTRIC KETTLE. you will use this for everything (oatmeal, tea, jell-o shots, sugar wax, you name it). i still use it to this day and they’re pretty affordable.

I got a reusable metal water bottle from target and it's made by a company called [proof] and it is SO GOOD. I did a little experiment and I put ice water in it and left it in a hot car all day and overnight and in the morning it still had ice in it and was super cold. If you're looking for a bottle that's one I highly recommend!!

As an RA another thing that you can do is talk to your ra if you are having problems with your roommate(s). We can always have a chat with the roommate for you or even just give you advice on how to deal with it. Our job is to make your time on campus as easy and fun as possible

that was such a big room! you're so lucky! i'm gonna be living in san francisco in less than a month(so excited!) with 2 other girls(we were randomly put together) and from the text conversations that we've had, we've hit it off really well. we're all contributing to different items and it's going so good. haven't met them yet but hopefully we'll all have a great 9 months living together. speaking this into existence.

i FEEL u on your freshman year roommate experience !! i had a very similar experience where my roommate was not the most considerate about others around her and we did not speak unless necessary, and she did end up moving out at the end of the fall semester. i lived alone for the rest of my freshman year & ended up loving it!! so to any incoming freshman, don’t think you and your roommate must be bffs, and you do not need a roommate to get the full college experience!

If you don't have scholarships/financial aid, american colleges are NOT worth it. British universities cost a bit less than 20'000$/year for international students, and you can get a room with a bathroom for yourself (no roommates) for about 9000$/year (in London, because it will be less expensive in smaller cities)! Moreover, you get your bachelor degree in 3 years instead of 4 :) Therefore, paying that amount of money for only 3 years for a degree from the LSE (for example) is definitely worth it compared to american colleges! I really enjoyed your video !

Ok, in France unless you've lived there for quite a while, it doesnt matter what the cost of college is for citizens, because you haven't paid taxes. I can't say the same for Britain, but it's possible. The same goes for within the states in the U.S., it's better to stay within your own state, because financial aid in other states isnt nearly as good. It all about where you/your family pays taxes

In Saudi Arabia they literally pay you to attend university in Saudi and pay full tuition fees if you want to study abroad exp.in the Us or Uk,+ a monthly allowance at that country for you to focus on studies and not worry about money

when you said you got your backpack and went straight to your friend’s room until like eleven I FELT THAT. the only difference is that i’m not a freshman in college but a senior in boarding school. it sucks so much because there isn’t no communication with two out of three roommates and it’s so horrible. :(

omhinhyun most Australian uni students still live at home so we will literally show up for our class and then leave, the community just isn't there. We don't really have sporting teams at all and when you enrol for uni you enrol into your degree rather than applying just for the university

Same for New Zealand university! Either single or double rooms, same sex. Or like me: never lived in any halls (we don't call them dorms)... I lived in a "private" rental the whole time. We rented a house and shared it with others. I had some amazing and really nasty flatmates!

Same as UK . There is sort of a community I suppose but in the uni closest to me nooo one stays at the weekend. But there's no sororities, and you're in separate rooms in halls but you have a communal kitchen and living room . But the night life is so much better round where I live

I know this is a year late but that’s so crazy, I chose my school at the very last minute as well (had a dorm and roomate ready at the other school all lined up) then went random at my current school, and got placed in a triple that was also a converted study... crazy

Advice for roommates, if you have issues with your roommate, talk to them about it. Then if it doesn't get resolved talk to your RA. If you are still having problems do NOT be afraid to switch rooms. I had a toxic roommate first semester of freshman year and we both decided that it would be better that she moved out (as she already had another room to go to, if she didn't I would have left)

I will be a Sophomore next year and dorm life was interesting...I COMPLETELY agree with the people on your sheets thing! I HATE that and I get grossed out too, so you're not the only one! I'm also so sorry you had a bad first year with your roommate. My roommate and I got along fine and didn't have any fights or anything but we weren't really friends so that was kind of weird. I do also wish that I had told her some things that bothered me like her slamming the drawers in the morning and turning on the overhead light when I was asleep, but you know, I was too scare too!

Nope! And some people at university/college Never even move into a dorm at all! I went to university in New Zealand and it isn't compulsory to live in a dorm (we call them halls). I lived in a rental flat house, apartment or townhouse the whole time I was studying. I started as a 20 year old and had been living away from home for 2 years. The university didn't help me (at all) to find a house to rent ... I had to find my own place and flat mates to share the house with.

Margot, normally I am a huge fan of your products, but I am quite disappointed with your decision to team up with Amazon. Amazon is infamous for very dangerous working conditions, and the horrible treatment of some of their employees. I encourage you to look up some of the practices that have been in the spotlight recently. Your videos are always wonderful, and strive to promote positivity, however by teaming up with Amazon, you are further promoting a company that is really unfair to a lot of people. No hate here, just asking to maybe rethink about the moral dignity of brands you choose to feature :)

Kate you absolutely can switch rooms, but sometimes that’s more trouble than it’s worth.

Kate at my school if you wanted to switch rooms you had to go through a whole process of talking to an RA with you and your roommate to see if the problems can be solved, and then talk to the head of housing with your roommate to again see if there are any solutions and after all of that another room was never guaranteed so sometimes it’s just easier to get through it the best you can

Yes and no. It depends really on the place but it’s always going to be a hassle having to pack your things up, go for the awkwardness that brings up, and then obviously meshing in and taking a lucky stab of whether you get a good roommate on the second try
