10. ABRAHA ATTACKS MECCA Before the birth of RasulAllah ﷺ, those things that are related (mutaaliq) to RasulAllah ﷺ include Tubb'a having a dream with some dark skinned people coming from Habesha/Abyssinia and conquering the land of Yemen (lecture 7). This had now become true with the arrival of Iryat and Abraha. Abraha was now planning an attack on Kabbah with the blessing of Najashi in response to the Arabs disrespecting the Qullays. What comes next is the part of history which is established by the Quran itself in Surah Al-Fil, so we as Muslims have no doubt about the authenticity of it. We also have many authentic narrations which include ahadiths that are marfu' (narrated by RasulAllah ﷺ himself) and mawquf (narrated by sahaba). Western historians/orientalists have it in their books too. Abraha took 13 elephants with him with Mahmud being the strongest leading the pack. He began his journey from Yemen but needed a guide to go to Mecca as he wasn't originally from that land. He would wait for the Arab tribes heading to Mecca and follow them. Arabs knew what Abraha was planning. Even though they were mushrikeen, they had tazeem (respect) for Baitullah so they would try to fight Abraha but historically none of them succeeded. He would take from them prisoners and use some of them as his guide. They captured a man named Dhu Nafar who belonged to the elite of Yemen. They captured another person from a different tribe named Nufayl Ibn Habib who was used as a guide. They finally got to the city of Ta'if. Banu Thaqif came out and told Abraha that they did not want to fight him but just wanted him to leave their idol Lut alone. Abraha's only goal was to destroy Kaaba. It's interesting that it was the time of Isa Ibn Marriam and Abraha didn't care about the shirk, rather he was more interested in his political goal. Unfortunately we see this today where Muslims don't think there is anything wrong with shirk. Our goal should be to eradicate shirk and establish the Haqq of Allah on this Earth. We have famous muslims conquerors like Ahmad Shah Abdali, Mahmud al Ghaznavi who conquered India. Hindus would ask these rulers to sell them the statues for a large sum of gold but Alhamdulillah they did not do so as they said that they did not want to be remembered in history as someone who sold the idols, but rather someone who broke the idols. Abraha asks for a guide to Mecca. A Thaqif leader named Mas'ud comes out who offers Abu Rugal as a guide for Abraha. Note that his son Urwah Ibn Mas'ud later would become a great companion of RasulAllah ﷺ. Abu Rugal was a famous traitor amongst the Arab. RasulAllah ﷺ mentioned him in a hadith in Sunan Abi Dawud, "People should stone like the stoning the Arab do to the grave of Abu Rugal." Arabs used to stone his grave to show the disrespect for him betraying the Arab and Baitullah. Abu Rugal at that time must have thought to himself that he had honored himself by being the guide to the greatest army Arabian Peninsula had ever seen, but suhanAllah when you betray, you will become disgraced in the end. Shaykh draws a comparison here to the people working as translators for the foreign occupiers. With the guidance of Abu Rugal, Abraha now gets to an area called which is in current day Mina and this is where he dies and gets buried. Mecca is not far now. Abraha sends out a message to the people of Mecca whether they wanted to fight or surrender because he was going to destroy Baitullah anyway. Arabs at that time are mushrikeen so there was no concept of Jihad fisabilillah so they make it known that they were not going to fight. Abraha asks them to send him their leader which at the time was Abdul Muttalib who was RasulAllah ﷺ grandfather. He was not a muslim but a mushrik. He went up to Dhu Nafr and asked him to get him close to Abraha, but Dhu Nafr being a prisoner of the war himself couldn't do so, so he asked his friend Unais in the army to help him out. So eventually with their help Abdul Muttalib made his way to Abraha. Even when traveling, Abraha out of his pride would set up a huge throne and no one would be allowed to sit at the same level as him. They would have a carpet laid out on the floor for the visitors to sit. When Abdul Muttalib came to see him, Abraha became impressed with him. He was a handsome man who carried himself with honor. This can happen when you see someone dignified, they command presence. So Abraha wanted to honor him in some way and wanted him to sit next to him by inviting him to the throne but he knew that the people of Habasha who were with him won't take this lightly, so instead Abraha got up and sat on the floor next to him and asked him what he could do for him. Abdul Muttalib told Abraha that his army had captured 200 of his camels and wanted them to be released back to him. Abraha upon hearing this got upset and told him that he had felt a respect for him upon seeing him and had thought that he was a man of honor but now he has lost that respect and thinks that Abdul Muttalib is a fool becauseAbdul Muttalib told him that Although he is a mushrik, he knew enough that Allah will protect what He deems to be holy. Today we get worried that if we don't sell out then Muslims will finish, Islam will finish etc. No, we as Muslims have a responsibility of speaking the truth, work towards what's righteous and never worry that the Kaaba or Islam will finish. Allah will protect it. This mushrik understood this when we as Muslims today have forgotten this. His words had an effect on Abraha and he became afraid and wanted to go back. But his generals were upset because they had traveled for months, made all the sacrifices, battled with so many Arab tribes and most of all what would they tell Najashi. This got Abraha thinking again and he decided to stick to his original plan of attacking Kaaba. He gave 200 camels back to Abdul Muttalib. Some books mention that many Arab tribes offered him 1/3 of their wealth but Abraha was rich and wasn't interested in this, rather he wanted to destroy Kaaba brick by brick. Abdul Muttalib went back to Mecca and told the people to leave the city. Abraha initiated the attack on Kaaba. Some historians have said that RasulAllah ﷺ was born on this day, Yaumul Fil, but across the board ulema have said that RasulAllah ﷺ was born that year, aamul Fil. But the majority and the strongest opinion among the historians is that RasulAllah ﷺ was born about 50 days after this event. It did not matter to the Arab when people were born because birthdays weren't a thing for them. They also did not have a calendar. Abraha wanted to make an impact, a shock and awe moment so he ordered his soldiers to send Mahmud first. We find in all history books across the board that Mahmud would not move in the direction of the Kaaba. Every time they pushed him, he would sit down. When they would face him towards Shaam, he would get up and walk with full and firm strength and they would face him towards Yemen, he would run but when they would face him towards Kaaba, he would sit down. These elephants were trained for such battles but it's a miracle from Allah that he would sit down. They would hit him with sticks that had hooked ends, even small axes towards his face, he would become enraged but he would still sit down. Nufayl Ibn Habib who was the prisoner of war seeing this chaos made his way to Mahmud and said, "Oh Mahmud, either stay where you are or go back to where you came from, for verily you are in the Holy land of Allah." Note that Nufayl Ibn Habib is also a mushrik but he realized the sanctity of Mecca, the Haram, the Kaaba. Mahmud by the will of Allah did not move. Historians say that at minimum Abraha had 60 thousand soldiers with him. So now they started to move towards the Kaaba.

Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى‎ tells us in Surah Al-Fil what happened next. These ayat were revealed at a time when all of the Ashabul Fil had died out. But Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى‎ says "أَلَمْ تَرَ - Didn't you see?" This tells us a very important lesson. Many times we want a sign but in the past there had been so many miracles like the miraculous birth of Isa Ibn Marriam etc but people still didn't believe. Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى here is addressing them saying that weren't you the people of Mecca, don't you remember that even that happened. Allah is bringing their attention to it, even though Allah knows that they (this generation) did not see it. This is a style of teaching. Surah continues to say "Didn't Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى destroy their plan and how did He destroy their plan, He sent upon them ababil." What we know from Ibn Abbas RA and others that ababil were sent in groups after groups by Allah from the oceanside, each one carrying three small rocks (hijara), one in their beak and one in each claw. Sijjil means a rock that has been baked. A narration from Imam Syuti narrated from Umm Kurz also called al-Khuziyya, known as al-Kabiyya said, "I saw these and they were liked the Yemini pearls" which are black and white type of rocks. Another narration from Al-Tabari mentions that they were rocks with baked clay which were baked in the fire of hell. Per Al-Tabbari, each person that was hit had their name written on it and these are the same type of rocks that were used for the destruction of Qaum Lut. Many authentic narrations mention that these rocks would enter the top and exit the bottom destroying the person through. Al-Tabbari says that it was such a destruction that there was nothing left of them to bury, as we see in the Quran "فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَّأْكُولٍۭ = like the straw or the hay that has been chewed up by an animal." In an authentic narration, Asma' RA also had a collection of these rocks. She was older than Aisha RA. Aisha RA says that "I saw two from the army of Ashabul Fil." It's interesting that when the Quran was revealed, they were finished, so she would have to have been at an age where she recognized them. She said I saw them and they were disfigured, blinded, unable to speak, begging. Al-Tabari says that all of them were hit with the rocks, some were killed on impact but Allah allowed for some of them to live to be a sign for mankind to remember. At the time when these rocks were falling and they were seeing these elephants and men disintegrate, there was chaos. Abraha's army was from Habasha and did not know the way around so they called out to Nufayl Ibn Habib to get them out of there. Nufayl Ibn Habib in a very beautiful poem replied to them that where are you going to go when Allah, the creator, the God Himself is the one who is after you. Al Tabri, Ibn Kathir, Ibn Hajar in Fath Al Bari and many others say that when the mutakabbir king Abraha was hit, Allah had him hit in such a way that he did not die right away, but it caused his body parts to start falling off. Because the kafir always loves life, he didn't make tawba but told his soldiers to take him back to Sanaa, Yemen. So his injured soldiers started to take him back. This was from the hikmah of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى to show all of those Arab tribes who were defeated by Abraha that even though they couldn't defeat Abraha but Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى could destroy Him. When he got back to Yemen, he looked like a newborn chick and eventually died there. Some of the orientalists (a kafir who studies Islam to try to cause issues) put doubt on this event. All of the historians across the board Muslim and non-Muslim agree that Abraha existed and conquered Yemen etc except for his attack on Mecca. But interestingly some of the orientalists found writings of the people of Abraha in their native language which had been hidden in France. These were published by the University of Paris in France in 2009 and they talk about a miraculous defeat. Scot Fitzgerald Johnson, Francis Peters and others from orientalists today have agreed that there was in fact such an attack and there was such a loss. Pages 142-146 of the manuscript that were translated by Christian Julian Robin and Dan Gibson confirm this that Abraha in fact did attack the Arabian Peninsula and was defeated in a miraculous defeat. SubhanAllah this is a miracle of the Quran that even the kufar now have had to accept. Abraha had a son ‎named Yaksum who now became king. His mother was a noble Yemini woman who was taken by force by Abraha. There was an Arab man by the name of Sayf Ibn Dhi Yazan who had geera and felt that Abraha hadn't done right by his people by being an oppressor, so he wanted to remove his lineage from ruling Yemen. He went to the King of Rome (Kaiser) for help but he was in alliance with Najashi so he refused to help him. Sayf Ibn Dhi Yazan then decided to go to the other side to the King of Persia (Kisra) for help. During this time, Yaksum died and his brother Masruf became king. Ibn Kathir and others have mentioned that because Persian kings at the time were oppressors, they were afraid and would only display themselves publicly once a year. A curtain would conceal the king but once a year there would be a day when this curtain would drop, the king would be shown to the people and all of the people would then fall in sujood. Out of his kibar (arrogance), the king had a huge crown which weighed almost 200 pounds and had to be lifted up with chains and lowered/suspended over his head. Since the people were far way, it would give them the illusion of a jewel entrusted on his head. So that day of this celebration arrived. With the help of Nu'man, an Arab that was exiled out of Yemen and had been living among the Persians and following their traditions got Sayif to this place. Note a mushrik doesn't care and they will celebrate anything. When the hijab fell, all except Sayf fell in sujood which worked out in Sayf's favor because now he was brought to the king. When asked why he did not prostrate, he said he was too consumed with his worries that he forgot where he was. The king asks him what he needed when Sayf explained his worries to him. Sayf said that he needed the king's army to go fight the oppressors that had taken over his land. The king gathered his advisors who did not agree to this, so the king instead gave Sayf 10 thousand gold coins (or whatever their currency was). Sayf took this money and gave it out to the people. Upon finding this out he was brought back to the king who questioned him. Sayf said You're worried about this 10 thousand? I am from the land of Yemen where our mountains are made of gold and silver. Now the king realized that he wasn't after money so he once again went back to his advisors who again did not want to jeopardize their own safety by sending their soldiers to fight someone else's fight so they came up with a plan. They took all of their criminals (murderers, rapists, anarchists) and made a battalion and gave them to Sayf with weapons. They also appointed Wahrez, a Persian general to lead them as Persians would never allow anyone else to lead. Sayf also collected the Arab tribes numbering around 7500 per Al-Tabari, and they went to battle Masruk whose army was much bigger but not as good anymore after what had happened to Abraha. During the battle, Wahrez asked of Masruk's whereabouts. Masruk being afraid of death would switch from one animal to another (camel, horse, elephant) with constantly changing clothes as a strategy to avoid being found. When Wahrez found out he was on the elephant, camel or horse, he said he couldn't touch him. But when he found out that he was on a mule which is a son of a donkey, he said now he could attack him because you now had a donkey on a son of a donkey. He attacked and killed him. This is when the Abyssinian rule on Yemen ended with 4 kings being Iryat, Abraha, Yaksum, and Masruk. Now Persians took control of Yemen. The gates to Saana were locked and Wahrez's flag was too high to pass through it. He had so much kibar that he had the gate destroyed to avoid bending the flag to go in. He now ruled Yemen and after he died his sons became king. Four generations passed until the new king of Persia was displeased with their way of ruling so he had them removed and sent Bahzan RA as the new king to rule the land of Yemen who would later become Muslim. This is also the time when RasulAllah ﷺ was born.

We don’t need historians to prove that Abrahah was humiliated. The Qur’an states it. If there was any doubt this miraculous incident took place, the Quraish and the Mushrikeen of Makkah could’ve flat out denied it in trying to disprove the Quran as Haqq. But of course, Allah swt speaks only the truth.

Some of the statements of Jewish scholars who converted to islam at the time of Muhammad (upon him be peace). 1) Kaab al ahbar(ra). Kaab al ahbar said the qualities of Muhammad (sa) in Torah is Ahmed is my choosen servant. He is neither severe nor harsh nor does he raise his voice in the market. He do not do evil but he deal with forgiveness . (Ibn saad kitab al tabaqat). 2) Abdulla Ibn salam It has reached us that Abdulla Ibn salam used to say the discription of gods messenger in Torah is You are My servant and My Messenger (i.e. Apostle). I have named you “Al-Mutawakkil” (one who depends upon God). You are neither discourteous, harsh nor a noise-maker in the markets And you do not do evil to those who do evil to you, but you deal with them with forgiveness and kindness. God will not let him (the Prophet) die till he makes straight the crooked people by making them say: “None has the right to be worshipped but God,” with which will be opened blind eyes and deaf ears and enveloped hearts.” ( Ibn saad, Bukhari Kitaab al-Buyu’) 3) Wahb Ibn munabbih(ra) Wahb bin Munabbih said: "Allah revealed to one of the Prophets of the Children of Israel whose name was Sha`ya' (Isaiah); `Stand up among your people the Children of Israel and I shall cause your tongue to utter (words of) revelation. I shall send an unlettered (Prophet) from among the illiterate (people). He will not be harsh or severe, or noisy in the marketplaces. If he were to pass by a lamp, it would not be extinguished, because of his tranquillity. If he were to walk on reeds no sound would be heard from under his feet. I will send him as a bearer of glad tidings and as a warner, who will never utter immoral speech. Through him I will open blind eyes, deaf ears and sealed hearts. ( tafsir ibn kathir surah 33 verse 45)
