My grandmother passed many years ago. She would be 108 if still alive. Her favorite Christmas was a homemade rag doll,her very own orange and a few chocolates. She spoke of that Christmas foundly. I remember being in middle school, and a teacher gave us fruit as a gift for Christmas. It was extremely exciting to be given fruit.

At my old church, the children where given what they called Toot bags, a brown paper lunch bag containing an orange, apple& a few whole in the shell nuts( walnuts, almonds)it was explained to me that this was the custom of many of the old families before they immigrated from Germany/ Russia1900-1930/40s. My children got a kick out of this! My exs step mom was of German decent, she said she remembered her grand mother talking about Toot bags,they acted like these bags were a treatabd look forwsrd by the children. 😊

Christmas is creeping up on us. Your wood stove looks cozy. I love wood heat. Nothing like it. It does take a little practice as to how much to put in so it doesn’t get to hot. Once you are used to it no other heat will do. Have a great evening everyone!

My mom was 93 when she passed. Born in southeast Kentucky just before the depression. Like others have said it fond memories. My mom spoke of a pan of fudge that her mother made once a year. If the orange in the stocking and a small toy. Of a large candy cane stick that would appear Christmas morning. All the kids had to share that one piece of candy - there were 5 of them. Mom said no matter how hard they searched for that candy before Christmas they could never find it. Times were hard. She said she never wanted to go back to that time. That people starved. But she was grateful for the love and bonding that happened to its family and friends.

I love drying oranges and using them in decorations too! I especially love the cinnamon smell in my home! I generally create a potpourri to add to a kettle which I place on the top of my wood stove. That way it can humidify our house all winter and make it smell nice too!

Our home is log cabin inspired year round...what some call "Christmas" throw pillows are our year round... We have had the same tree for years...spent entirely way to much, it seemed at the time..but still looks brand new. 7 footer...the only thing that goes on it are about 2000 clear lights (a constant reminder...Jesus is the light of the world..) and antlers. Antlers we have collected on hikes, vacations etc over the decades. I do the entire kitchen in a hot cocoa theme, all hand painted, and in a primitive style.. I like it and can leave it up, like you, through February. Simple and primitive..a reminder of what the season is all about. Have so much firewood from Ian left...and now years worth from Milton..we are just hoping it is cool enough to light it...southwest FL, either it is freezing on Christmas, or we have the AC on..but we love the ambiance and aroma of a big fire burning in the fireplace..toss a piece of cedar or pecan wood in...

Since we have had our woodstove for many years, the wood we cut this year is for three years out. It is plenty dry that way even though 8 months is all that is recommended to not end up with a lot of creosote in your chimney. I have heard that Ash wood can be used right away as long as the tree was dead when it was cut down.

Awe Tessie I’m loving this already. I went straight back to Grandmas house. Handmade mittens we looked forward to every year. And the peppermint sticks that were only had at Christmas. I still to this day do popcorn and cranberry strings for our tree. I have oil lamps in every room and some two! When our kiddos were young we did paper chains and baked and hung Christmas cookies, they loved sharing with visitors n family what ones were theirs! We used to always have a fresh tree, I know it’s shameful but we have a fake tree now because we keep our tree up way past Christmas just because we so enjoy the thankfulness of the Lord and the joy of all He has created. ❤

I am hoping to be plain Christmas within a few years. I spent six successful years entering and winning sweeps, and it has taken a while to dwindle down the gifts I have for others. I have kept very little for myself, and it has been like a full time job, so I scaled back what I do. I want to make some crafty things, like chili jar mix. I think those gifts are way more appreciated. I also pared Christmas gifts down to immediate family only. I had been giving stuff to up to 50 people. I also want to do more for the service people in my life. They deserve it. Thank you for this video!

Love the idea of adding essential oils to the lamp oil. We do a cranberry-popcorn garland. And I have been using cuticle sessors to cut oval openings in chicken eggs (save the contents for scrambled eggs in the morning) which I am allowing to dry, so I can make shadowbox eggs for the small live tree I have. Have always had a live potted tree that we bring in a few days before Christmas. Also need to make some straw Swedish ornaments.

Tessie.when we lived in our cabin in the woods. we had 17 cords of firewood stacked. i loved chopping wood and stacking it. u get warm many times over with a wood pile and wood stove. For xmas we put out food for all the woodland critters. Now we live in town. Hubby still feeds the birds here. i love a homemade xmas. I gave my collections of little house on the prairie books to my grandgirls. I may ask for Santa to bring me a new collection this year. love your videos!

You are reminding me that I need to trim the wicks on our oil lamps. We do run kerosene in our oil lamps, and live in an old house, so it's not air tight. We used to buy lamp oil, but it smelled just like kerosene and kerosene was cheaper. We basically just use our oil lamps for backups, when the power goes out. I love the idea of a Little House Christmas, and I am slowly wanting to go back to some of the old decorations, etc. I am getting so tired of this fast paced world we now live in.

Hmmm thinking maybe I should look into the lamps. We do use some solar light bulbs from time to time. Have no wood stove , we have gas. I remember the episode where the Ingles received oranges, mom said during WW2 they were thrilled to get citrus for Christmas. I remember putting the old twisted candy canes into oranges and sucking on them until the juice came through. They need to be the old-fashioned candy canes to make this work. Blessings
