Good job, I've had my latest system for the last 13 years without a crash while I traveled alot for work thanks to automation and lots of stuff I learned along the way from observations through lots of "experiments" on each trip I make. Everything you said holds true for sure. I think many people understand what the goals are but how to accomplish that varies tank to tank. Man made rocks are great when you make them out of coral skeletons and cement/aragonite. I like to use white structural cement. It becomes very porous, naturally. There is nothing like natural live rock, after cured and without Aiptasias!!!! Feeding the fish is important BUT heavily isn't always healthy! A diet based on dry foods is a must and the frozen food (full of phosphates) is the "junk food". Get the tank well fed with variety of quality dry foods like various flakes and pellets and give' em a treat here and there. the Anthias and Wrasses will need more frozen, I know... Great you talked about the quarantine!!! A must! Great video! Thanks for not having those adds!! This proves to me that you are really passionate about your hobby and the videos you make.

Great videos. My question is this: if you don't trust a TDS meter. How do you measure your source water quality?

I err on the side of changing things early. I still use a handheld TDS meter to check the % rejection of my membranes but I don't use it to determine the purity of my product water. I don't think these cheap ones are sensitive enough, but it's just my opinion. But I do strongly believe the 1 TDS is too much and should not be added to the tank.

Coral Euphoria - Do you have a pic of your ATI light intensity and duration (the graph) I wanna share mine and see what you think? I’m basically running 14 hr photo period. There’s 6 hr peak period from 11-5 with 1 hr ramp on both sides. 8x54 Watts on 75/G 😶. I have the LED’s at 24%, the first channel at 40% peak and 2nd channel at 100% 4 ATI blue plus and I keep both channels on from 11-5pm then they ramp down.

@@Reefahholic my power module is not dimmable. But pretty much I have the two bulbs on for 12 hours, and then all eight bulbs are on for 6 hours. The LED strip light that I have runs at about 85% for 10 hours of the total 12 hour photoperiod. I have them ramping up and down for 1 hour on each side of the 10 hours to make it 12 hours total for them too.

Coral Euphoria- Ok, yeah mine has 4 bulbs on one channel (the two outside bulbs- front and back). Those ramp up from 7am to 9pm at 40%. The middle 4 bulbs (4x blue+) run from 11:00am to 5:00pm at 100% with 1-hr ramp on both sides. My 3x LED clusters ramp from 7:30am to 9:00pm at 24%. Fairly low only for color pop. That’s pretty much it.

Thanks for subscribing. It's probably not really anything too terribly important and like I said I'm unable to prove it. It's just that I think that the biological filtration in the display, mainly everything that grows on the live rock, like microorganisms, filter feeders, algae, etc., is better biological filtration than anything that would grow in an unlit sump, because either a) its not being lit, so there is no photosynthetic biological filtration benefit, or/and b) it is not natural substance, like ceramic. But like i said its just a personal belief.. maybe not a big deal either way 🤷‍♂️ I think the important thing to take away is... .. have a lot of or strong biological filtration so that you can get to the point where you can feed the fish heavy, and/or have a large amount of fish, and the corals will benefit from that.

@@stephenmegel6975 I would say that there are an annoyance and borderline a pest when they get out of control. They are technically a filter feeder cuz they take stuff out of the water. And I know some people say they can annoy corals, which I don't doubt. But it's usually not a problem in my opinion in SPS tanks because the flow is high, so their little webs of mucus get broken up.

I just err on the side of changing the filters early, and have at least two carbon and DI filters.

BRS says to change the carbon blocks whenever you notice the pressure drop. I never notice that, so I just change both carbon filters at the same time, about every 4 months. But that's going to depend how much water you make obviously. For the DIY resin, use at least two color changing resins. When the first one in line gets used up, move over the second resin to the first position. Then refill the old cartridge with fresh DIY resin and put it in the second slot.

Such a great recipe for success! And in the end, it comes down to consistent work to see what’s happening and to keep things solid and stable. For me, this reinforces that reefkeeping can be easy but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a lot of work - something new hobbyists really need to know. Haha, you like the scary pumpkin eh? I thought Bayer *did* kill AEFW but not their eggs. Also, doesn't Interceptor kill AEFW? It's now available in Dr G's coral dip.

Hi, No Bayer does not kill AEFW. It will temporarily paralize them to where they have a good chance of falling off but they don't actually die. Im sure if you upped the dosage enough it would kill them but the coral would die too. Interceptor is for red bugs. It kills them. But Bayer also kills them.

How long would you wait with a new setup to introduce Acros? Do you wait for coraline or sponge growth? Are there any indicators?

I think that is a tough one. I have had acros in as early as 5 months in some tanks, but then again some acro died in other tanks at the 5-month mark. You could always try softies then LPS then Monti's, and then if those survive try one or two inexpensive sticks to see how they do.

I have had frags keeping good color and slowly encrusting. Some more than others. Thing is, why do they take so long to acclimate? Some frags haven't encrusted over the plug yet and its been at least 6 months. driving me crazy. I have never tweaked anything since I got them aside from keeping up with 2-part demand. Parameters are VERY stable. beats me

I have flat worms , and it sux, but they live on one colony and weirdly I just leave that colony alive and as a sacrifice piece :) it’s a magnet. My other coral are fine, so I’m scared to remove it. If I do just one bug may decide it needs a new home. Long term I’m going to move tanks to a fully quarantined tank. Ahhhh the next build, nothing ignites a long term reefers heart like a new build

My comments about live rock being in the display are more from a biological filtration standpoint. I think it's better to have that biological filtration in the display compared to the sump. As far as your problem with nutrients, yeah it could be could be a build-up of detritus. But it could also be other things.

Just subscribed to your channel, really good tips, and really good advice, but, and of course there’s always a but.-You say you’re having trouble with having to low phosphates. And you talk somewhat about being OCD with your aquariums, And not having sand because it has a tendency to be to biologically active. You claim it interferes with how well your acro’s grow, however I do not see that to be a significant difference if you keep your sand well-maintained.- And because substrate contains a lot more biological activity including higher phosphates it should make up the difference helping your corals to grow faster and healthier with more color. If you are good with maintenance as you appear to be,.it should be more of a plus then a minus for your corals. I have found this in my own experience to be the case. Also things process biologically much quicker and effectively with even a small amount of substrate, let’s say no more than 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 inch. I was wondering your opinion on this and if you think my comment has any validity?

Hi Charles, thank you for subscribing and for the compliments. Regarding phosphates, I wouldn't say that I have a problem with low phosphates. I run RowaPhos so I want them low. I think you're referring to my comments in the nutrient video, where I said that sometimes I wonder if I let my phosphates creep up will I get better growth, since some studies suggest that. There are even a couple of hobbyist who run higher phosphates and seem to get better growth than me, which is why I said that. But In my opinion, having more or higher phosphates don't do anything for color. In fact I believe that lower phosphates are better for color. And actually, I think that while some corals will grow better with higher phosphates, I'm pretty sure that other species will not like the higher phosphate so much, which is backed up by the different scientific studies, which I also mentioned in my nutrient video. So I'm content with keeping low phosphates because I care more about color than growth, if I had to lean towards one over the other. And again, because High phosphates will slow down growth in some acropora. One reason that I don't like sand is because it's a detritus trap and I believe that detritus needs to be removed from the aquarium for reasons I can't prove. It's not the right "nutrients" that the corals want for growth, color, and health in my opinion.

Coral Euphoria ; Thank you I appreciate your reply, However I did think I heard you say that the colors of your corals we’re bleaching out to a paler lighter color. Which I thought you said was due to lower phosphates and nitrates. And I thought you were speaking of that in a negative way, however looking back at it you did say you preferred a more pastel looking coral. But it seems from logical deduction that paler colors in acropora is a sign of stress because of lack of algae in tissue which require nutrients such as phosphates and nitrates. That is assuming you are meeting the light requirement. Anyway they do need trace amount of these elements as studies have shown. But like they say, “ if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” If that’s the way you’ve been doing it for years and everything still fine, why change, right. Thank you, very much appreciate your channel.
