Hey everyone! So we've done some other solo style training videos that are great supplements to this, such as how to throw proper cuts using body engagement. Proper cutting mechanics are always important. We're starting to build up a decent chunk of solo training videos, so we've created a playlist specifically for those. We've racked up a good chunk of videos now, so if you have any suggestions on different kinds of playlists we can do please let us know!

I have studied karate for over a decade, and have recently taken up the longsword, with no one to train with. What really impresses me is the similarities between these two different arts. Many of the moves are similar (like the two tracks when moving), and I have heard my sensei tell me many times, "Slow is smooth, smooth is fast." I also REALLY like the statement "Practice makes permanent." I am stealing that for when I teach in our dojo tomorrow!
@TheUltimateWriterNZ Жыл бұрын
Is that because Karate was a Samurai Martial art and based on sword play?
@FifthTrumpet10 ай бұрын
@@TheUltimateWriterNZdefinitely not, it was originally a martial art that combines jujutsu grappling with Chinese striking forms, came from what is modern day Okinawa But I’m sure swordsmen did learn it the same way HEMA practitioners learn grappling

Never done HEMA, but as a former competitive kickboxer and boxer, I can tell you the hours I spent doing basic footwork drilling was worth every second of it. I'd imagine this wouldn't be different for your combat sport or others (not doing the boxing/kickboxing footwork, but spending that same amount of time doing your own footwork drills).

Solid advice! I would never rest the sword on my shoulder though in the guard of the Vom Tag. The reasons are 1) you hands are very exposed for hand snipes (especially one-handed ones) and 2) Your defense against a good Zwerchhau will be delayed. What is your reasoning behind it? All I can think of is more power, but with a Vom Tag strike, I think you already have enough force, and usually there are better and more elegant ways to score than powering through.

Lauri Uuniemi As far as I know there are no definitive arming sword manuscripts, so it'd be hard to state something as "arming sword drills " Messer however is a completely different story, and in my opinion would be used very similarly.

Hey, so totally new to HEMA but doing my research, but wanted to ask if its easier to follow german or italian longsword ? And is there any set texts you would recomend purely for beginers?
@CallofWar56 жыл бұрын
Kieran Lock Joachim Meyer has great exercises for beginners like the Meyer's Square. I would recommend the German style because it is more complete and definitive about how to use one's sword against another. Regardless of what style you choose practice mastering the basic cuts and body mechanics as this will determine how good you can become really. Once you understand fencing theory you can pick whatever style you want and be a baller. So focus on mechanics and sound theory.
@BloodandIronHEMA6 жыл бұрын
We would personally recommend German Longsword. But if you wanted to go Italian, go follow The Phoenix Society and their videos religiously. We would highly recommend picking up "German Longsword Study Guide" from Keith Farrell. It's a great place to start for absolute beginners - www.woodenswords.com/German_Longsword_Study_Guide_p/book-ger01.htm From there you can get into either Liechtenauer, or Meyer. We recommend Meyer since he talks more theory, footwork, etc, but it can definitely be difficult to digest compared to Liechtenauer (That being said, Liechtenauer isn't all fun and games either. For Liechtenauer check out wiktenauer.com/ for Meyer check out the 1570 edition on Amazon or Purpleheart. Usually a healthy mix of both is the way to go.

Since ballistics gel isn't a super accurate medium to cut through due to all the jiggle, would putting it inside a relatively firm but easy to cut through container like a milk jug fix the problem?
@tempestindustries94465 жыл бұрын
I would think a tatami mat would do well. I mean thats what you use for Katanas and such so idk how well longswords and such would do
@diarrheadan80885 жыл бұрын
Yes something like a milk jug would work or just put it In a bag and duct tape it all around to make it firm.
@diarrheadan80885 жыл бұрын
@@tempestindustries9446 tatami mats are alright but they don't give very well, that's why you get the illusion that katanas are actually good swords when in reality when put against good armor they're useless. They're too light and built for low armor combat, katanas were also considered bad weapons during their time and basically only got used if you were in a really bad situation. Polearms were the melee weapons of choice for samurai.

@@galdarienloyalar3148 Shoulder cuts from side to side. When the instructor moves from one position to the other I’m not getting it.
@galdarienloyalar31482 жыл бұрын
@@matthewwilliams5407 im guess its when you're crossing over and your lead hand is twisting over your offhand. Its just clunky in general, just have to build strength with it. If stepping with it over complicates it, stand facing forward with your feet slightly over shoulder width apart and knees bent. And practice doing X's in the air, over one shoulder to the opposite hip. Once you have that down don't stop the motion, let the sword circle around on your side. Its the same as doing the X just circle. To add power drop twist your hip into it and drop your weight on the leg your cutting towards.
@galdarienloyalar31482 жыл бұрын
@@matthewwilliams5407 when you want to add steps you're going to have to learn more about foot work. I was a fenser, so I'm still getting used to the wider stances. But Main stance though is heels of your feet are parallel with the balls of your shoulder, your dominant foot facing forward straight at your target, your back foot is facing at a 45° away. Drop your weight and make sure you center center of balance is directly in-between your feet. Have most of your weight on your toes, that to the point your heals are off the ground but its a good 70% toes 30%heals. This makes it easier to pivot and you have better balance. As you step full weight goes to your toes, your back leg goes to the leading possition in front and you old lead foot pivots to a 45 as soon as your new lead foot lands
