I forgot to add the score for the last match: Chad won 9 to 6. I'm pretty happy with how close that was. And by the way, regarding the few apparently inevitable sexist comments about female competitors... Jane Johnston beat Reese Pollock for Silver. Just so you know. Strength matters, but skill is the biggest factor in armed martial arts, and there are plenty of competent female fighters in HEMA.
@chadherbert186 жыл бұрын
Super close match! Had me sweat'n when Jane called: "LAST EXCHANGE!" Not trying to assume gender by names, but I check the list and I think 6-8 of 36 fighters were swords-women! 1 in 6 ratio - better than the 1-15 ratio in the technology field I work in - lol...

I can attest to the competent female fencers, have a number of them with my club....one of them is terrifying to fight at first since you don't expect it from someone as "bubbly" as she is, that and her small frame doesn't help the image
@GallowglassAxe6 жыл бұрын
Very nice fighting. Now you said you have a tendency to be defensive when you fight. You should work on that. I've done modern/sport fencing and there are a lot of great epeeist and foilist who is predominantly defensive. They can read or set up an opponent to attack them in a certain way in order to parry or counter cut. This rule seems to favor the defender more with after blows and doubles.
@jambalaya2016 жыл бұрын
Skallagrim hey Skall one question Is it allowed to make moves/swings with one arm or do you have to hold the sword always with two hands?
@Jesses0016 жыл бұрын
That last fight was indeed close. Good fight. As for females vs males, males clearly have an advantage in combat sports over females being generally stronger and having higher testosterone, allowing for better combative aggression. Also males seem to have a level of instinctual body mechanics females do not. That all being said, a female can overcome these disadvantages with training. Strength is an advantage, but skill is even more important in such matches.

This really drives home for me how serious sword fights were. You enter a duel with someone and seconds later someone is dead or grievously injured. It's ruining movies for me, however. Now every time I see a battle scene where two massive armies charge at each other and then immediately pair off into 1on1 duels I roll my eyes. It would be nice to see a movie about medieval or ancient warfare with full dedication to historical accuracy in terms of tactics and weapons/armor used. No one can say there isn't a way to make 2 phalanxes squaring off cinematically exciting, because I can imagine the scene now, shot for shot.
@Masa6x6 жыл бұрын
I fully agree, altho I would prefer to see phalanx vs cavalry or something, instead of 2 phalanxs, using different formations to counter the enemies. A historical movie would be great, and if you've seen the go pro footage from skall's instructors dueling saber, it looks better than the movies.

Your ability to honestly recognize you mistakes and your will to analyze your past matches will allow you to improve much faster than anyone who wouldn’t do the same. beeing a woman in swordsmanship does not have the same drawbacks as it has in boxin, especially the body strenght is not as required in swordmansship then in boxin, swordmanships rewards swift decision making and good blade control, both things that can be done no matter if there are two balls hanging between your legs or on your chest.
@bardbarbarian53136 жыл бұрын
does the weight of a sword matter, short answer no, long answer, in most cases no, since most blades (and especially longsowrds) are balanced out at the hilt of the sword or the grip, it is pretty easy to move them around (which of course does not apply so much to blade heavy swords like machetes or falchions) but as i said in a case of a longsword the weight is negliable and with practice you won't even notice it at a certain point of training as much as you would think).

You didn't show your points and of the opponent after the last match, @Skallagrim. It would be nice to call before each match if you are red or are blue.

You mean verbally? Because highlighting his name in red was good enough for me.

Oh, did I forget to include the score for that one? Chad won 9 to 6. And I was red every time, which is why I wrote my name in red.

While watching this I was thinking - man sword fights in movies suck. And here is why. In movies fighters (focus: fighters not minions who just die) exchange dozens of attacks before they finally land a decent hit and while I'm aware that in full plate or even chainmail hits from duels like in this tournament wouldn't be leathal it still shows how actually difficult it is to parry a blade that is moving so freaking fast. And thats why in movies fighters who seem to be able to parry most of the opponents attacks look so calm (Im not talking about their face expression when its hidden under the helmet I'm talking about body language they move so confident almost like they knew they can't get hit and that results in the lack of emotions, nerves, excitment, feeling of danger of being killed) because they do parry most of the blows. And I know I know it's for entertainment, but is it really so entertaining when it lacks all the emotions I mentioned earlier, when it practically lacks the fear of danger and death. All in all I found those duels way more exciting than those flashy hollywood ones in movies. So thanks for good video Skal. I hope I delivered the message english isnt my mothertongue. :)

I listen to you review swords and talk about different historical movements and techniques, but to actually see you using them in a practical tournament is really awesome. Would love to see so much more of these type of videos. I understand with everything going on in the world, getting to alot of tourneys right now isn't going to work very well. But definitely would love to see more of this type of content in the future.

As a fencer I love watching this. It's like watching someone play the same sheet music in a completely different style, the ideas are all the same but the execution is crazy to me.

I'm actually curious: what requirements are there in order to participate in the tournament and how much does it cost (if anything at all)? I'm interested in potentially going in 2019 to enter the longsword tournament myself, though I know the outcome is that I will likely lose with minimal points due to vast inexperience and no time (and little money) to afford formal training. I know someone like me asking may sound like a bit of an insult, but I really am curious.

Great footage and commentary. I always find the rules for martial arts tournaments interesting in themselves too. Obviously there need to be rules to compete and keep everyone safe, but it's intriguing to think about the full reasons for them too. For instance in this case, points are given for cuts or thrusts to any body part - so presumably they are thinking in terms of unarmoured / lightly armoured combat (or perhaps just to judge who is better at landing blows in general). And yet, to score points a cut needs that at least 75 degree swing, invalidating mostly pushing or drawing cuts. I don't mean to point this out as good or bad, it's just interesting and one reason why tournament fighting in many disciplines has a skill set of its own that doesn't tend to apply to battlefield or self-defence training.
