Thanks for these.... always amazes how so many people don’t think ‘real’ history starts till the Renaissance! But you clearly show just how much is going on before that
@NizzahonHistory3 жыл бұрын
Yep! That is one of my goals for sure.
@somamanyoki81743 жыл бұрын
I've never heard that... Why would people think there's even a 'real' history?
@genius114333 жыл бұрын
@@somamanyoki8174 People may not say it in those precise terms, but as Nizzahon put it, people think that nothing happened during the Middle Ages. And actually, that view of the Middle Ages was an Enlightenment invention: there was Classical Antiquity (e.g., Egypt, Greece, Rome), then Rome fell, then there was this period of time in the middle of Classical Antiquity and the Renaissance (hence "Middle Ages") where classical wisdom was lost to the common man, humanity stagnated, and nothing new was learned; humanity began to flourish again when we left the "Dark Ages" and entered the Renaissance and the Enlightenment after it.
@somamanyoki81743 жыл бұрын
@@genius11433 Thanks! I mean I know about the middle ages being that way. To a degree, I understand people thinking it was "boring". It's still weird to me. Sure, it was a period of time with a lack of forward momentum, and a scarcity of written information, but if anything, that makes it more interesting to me.
@Renwoxing13 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, they also are completely oblivious to the fact Europe had multiple renaissance’s !¡! Although Europe admittedly “adopted & adapted” much of their technology from the Middle East, China, & a few rare instances from other countries : T’would appear to be a truism that Europe has been technologically ahead of the world for far, *FAR LONGER* Then Just The Industrial Revolution !¡!

Just one little thing. Wouldn't the Muslim Madrasa be considered the first universities, or at least university-like centers of learning?
@NizzahonHistory3 жыл бұрын
Madrasas are definitely similar, but the universities in Europe and the United States are not descended from them, they are descended from medieval universities.

"Here's a quick reminder of how I score inventions: long-term impact is worth 2 points and sheer practicality is worth one point. Now let's get to the list. At number 10 we have..." For some reason I just vividly imagined this line being said by Dr. Nizzahon at the start of the video. I wonder why? 😅

So what I learned is oxen used to be the go to choice in draft but they were only useful for their good stats as vanilla creatures, then when horses were introduced in the next set they tore up the draft scene with their combination of good stats and evasion and you should first pick them in most packs.

One thing that really shocked me was learning that knitting only dates back to the 11th Century. (That's according to Wikipedia, which does acknowledge that the technology is likely older, but the 11th Century is the earliest that has been found.) I really think its importance has been horribly underrated. It allowed poor people to make their own clothing directly from thread without the need for weaving.

Out of curiosity for doing historiography on this type of thing, especially in academic settings, how important is it to be able to read archaic forms of languages to get good primary sources? Do historians do that by themselves, or is it more common to get a translator?
@NizzahonHistory3 жыл бұрын
Historians learn languages so they can read sources themselves. In my case that mostly means Hebrew and Latin.

Another great medieval invention: functional buttons. Before buttons, all clothes had to be laced, or pulled on over the head. Buttons had been around as decoration for thousands of years, but functional buttons first appeared in medieval Europe.

I wonder if the horseshoe and horsecollar were the turning point in history. Where before that you see a lot of Horn/Bull worshipping. I also do understand that cattle was seen as a sign of wealth and before gold bars were the main way for bartering international trade. But I do believe there is a transition when looking at logos/flags etc from bull/cattle dominant to more horses. Obviously development of Knights basically a hybrid of heavy infantry and cavalry would play a role as well probably the major one lol.
