If I remember correctly you did have to put sticky tape over the missing tab to record. To protect your own tapes you broke the tab

The tab in the corner of the VHS spine affected recording. If it was pulled out, then the VHS couldn't record information. Very similar to the tabs on an audio cassette tape. If you removed those, you couldn't record also. To get around this, you put tape over the holes (or stuff paper in them) to all recording again. Now, some VHS tapes had copy protection and wouldn't allow you to dub them. If you did, your playback VHS would display a distorted image every few seconds.

The VHS cover art from "Transylvania 6-5000" and "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" were iconic in the videostore and made me grab them. There was also a giant poster from the "Super Mario Bros." movie that really got my attention. Loved the vídeo. Always great to see the Rad Packers doing stuff together.

When I was a kid there were three covers that scared and intrigued me. They were The Elephant Man, The Return of The Living Dead and Blood Beach! My dad brought me to a video store his friend ran all the time and TROTLD and Blood Beach were two big posters on the wall. So they stuck with me lol. Freddy’s Dead and Jason Goes To Hell made me want to see them and I love them both now! Good job and thank you both. Please please PLEASE do a part 2 of this! Keep being awesome folks!

Garrett - I remember what you are talking about with the tape. So if you broke the tab off, so you could NOT record over it anymore, you wpuld put scotch tape over to be able to record on it again. I never did with a bought movie, but I guess would work. I just maybe broke the tab off and then later changed my mind and wanted to record over whatever was on it.

There was macrovision protection that would make dubbing VHS problematic. In a sense you could do it, but your recording would be mostly unwatchable. In the early days of VHS there was no protection. I first encountered Macro w/ things like Back to the Future and Cobra.

I would have to say North Shore. Growing up surfing in the 80's I couldn't wait to pop it in the VHS player. 40 years later I own it on Blu-ray and it remains one of my favorite go-to guilty pleasure movies

Not only were the actors in Death Becomes Her taking a chance on that subject matter but so was the amazing director Robert Zemeckis. They all did such a great job!

The dawn art that I saw first was Actually the yellow box w green font. Such a weird artwork for thr vhs

In regards to copying tapes back in the day, some tapes did have a protection on them called macrovision. The movie would still copy, but it would be a mess of rolling tracking/picture and all kinds of weird color fluctuations. I recall specifically renting and trying to copy Halloween 5, and it came out real bad. Dick Tracy was another one with protection. Possibly Roger Rabbit as well. I don't think any of the really old 80s tapes had them, but starting in the early 90s certain ones did have it. My family had a 5 foot tall wooden cabinet with swinging front doors filled with mostly copied or recorded off TV/HBO tapes. I think the most we ever had was maybe between 100-150, but almost every tape had multiple movies on it, usually 3-4. Who cared about quality, nothing looked that good on VHS anyway! haha, I'd rather have a cool triple/quadruple feature on 1 tape. I know I had Gremlins on the same tape as Escape From NY. I even made a tape where it was Night, Dawn, then Day Of The Dead back to back.

I suppose watching so many films in bad quality is preferable to buying so many films today in tricked out editions and then having them just sit on a shelf. It was always about the experience back in the day rather than just building a collection. It's also really hard to recreate the experience of watching so many of these B movies as adults yet we still try.

Hey 2/3 Rad Pack. Great topic. Love Mel’s story about her family video collection. Super fun. I remember roaming the isles of many video stores searching for gems I’ve never seen before and those funky cool covers were always the tipping point of renting or not renting the movie. Also Garrett, the VHS tapes had copy guard on them so if you tried to straight copy it, the image would look funky. But you could buy a copy guard remover device from Radio Shack that would do the trick.

When I flipped the sleeve for the Scream Factory Blu-ray Deadly Friend and didn't see the VHS art, I was ticked off. That's one movie I was afraid to rent because it looked like a heavy metal movie of sorts and I was terrified of that culture when I was a child. Now? I'm a huge metalhead and I now know that the movie had nothing to do with the genre of music.

@@Born2BeRad I didn't mention the doohickey that VHS tapes used to determine which were okay to be recorded over, but I thought I would now, because I noticed that early on in my childhood. I was obsessed with VHS and understanding the ins and outs. Any movie that was for sale or rent, which contained a movie or show on it, usually had the little tab missing. I might have found a few very cheaply recorded VHS with the tab still on. I could be wrong about that, but I somehow think I remember seeing some. A blank VHS had the tab still attached. I remember being at a mall in the 90s where some bunch of folks had a few tables set up with VHS and Beta tapes for sale. Some were new, some used. I remember they were trying to get rid of the Day of the Dead VHS, and they said that if you tape the little notch in each cassette, you could record over the movies, so if you wanted to store up on recordable VHS, they were going for very cheap. I'm pretty sure I knew that probably a decade before. But it was funny hearing these people trying to sell off the bulk of their Day of the Dead tapes. I believe I bought one to watch the movie. I think I recall there being a Critters Beta tape. I was going to buy it until I realized it wasn't a VHS. Now, I kinda wish I would have boughten it. It was neat.
