Assassin’s Creed II’s ending is definitely mind blowing to me. Seeing Minerva talk to Ezio with Desmond (you the player) observing via the animus just to find out that Minerva used Ezio as a means to communicate to Desmond (essentially talking to you the player) about their history and an impending global catastrophe was a definite WTF moment right there.

There's this old PS1 game called Vagrant Story where you hunt down a mysterious cult leader with supernatural powers. The twist is that it later turns out that the reason why he lures you deeper and deeper into a cursed city and sends boss after boss for you to fight is that he was preparing you to be his successor and he wants to transfer his dark powers to you so that it will not to fall into the hands of evil men.

I have heard that SOMA was really incredible and I hope to get to playing it someday. However, as someone who believes in God and Jesus, Christ as my Lord and Savior; I know that we are more than dust and an uploaded consciousness. We all have souls, we all feel hope, joy, love, peace, anger, despair, hopelessness, numbness, ect. Even though the story of this game (as well as many other books and movies) may be well written, we do not need to question our existence to the point that we fear life here on earth, as I have heard that a lot of people just start questioning their existence after playing this game. We just need to be patient and be still and know that God (the creator of Heaven and Earth, the Father of Jesus, Christ, and the Father of Israel) is in control, and know that He loves you and everyone else in the world thar He created.

I was late to the party and just played and completed Soma for the first time about a month ago. Man, it did not disappoint. In terms of thought-provoking narratives with deep philosophical implications, it really doesn't get much better than that game. The devs really knocked it out of the park. Reminded me of an episode of the Twilight Zone (best series of all time) and the ending left me feeling satisfied yet very uneasy. Definitely a must play title.

@@thehater6189 I think the overarching question is "What makes us human" and the game basically explores different angles of this question. like what if your body is synthetic or your mind just a copy, could it be considered killing if you switch off a robot with a human consciousness in it etc.

The body replacing its cells is not necessarily the body copying itself, because your cells also change over the course of your life. The DNA in all cells can change based on your experiences e.g. people that suffer long-term stress or disease have cells whose DNA is adapted to these experiences, and cells can also be infected by disease that radically change their structures such as developing into cancer tumors or simply mutate the cells themselves such as HIV. The term "copy" implies that the existence of the new object is exactly the same in structure, form and function as the object the new object is based on, and philosophically speaking, this also becomes even more complicated if we reject philosophical essentialism, that the idea of a copy implies in order to be true. If no object has an essence which defines it as that object, can copies of other objects even exist? And what is the difference between an imitation and a copy in this scenario, since an imitation assumes the form but not the essence of the object it tries to reproduce? This is also a spiritual question, because in classical western philosophy, the idea of an essence is also intrinsically linked to the idea of the soul i.e. the reason AI is seen not as its own life form but merely an imitation of humanity is because it does not possess a soul. But if the basis on existence is the idea of possessing a soul, what does that make of children? Can children be considered copies of their parents? Children possess the same DNA and therefore exhibit a similar cellular structure, as their parents do. And if we extend this argument even further, is not the very notion of life a copy of a copy of a copy? Because if essentialism does not exist, then the lines drawn between when what defines a particular object starts and when it ends is purely subjective and therefore arbitrary. Humans can collectively agree on that generally speaking, X is an X and not Y, but we can also collectively agree on that sometimes an X can look like a Y and still be X. This is for example true for monozygotic twins that are considered as their own individuals but on a cellular level are exactly the same. So I think the topic is quite more complex than what you suggest here. Maybe this explanation is sufficient for you, but to state it is *the* explanation is false. The reason why games like SOMA stick with people so long after completing it is because while one can be content with a particular answer like yours in your case, the more honest approach to SOMA's questions is there are no real answers to these questions. Your take could certainly be considered correct, but as I demonstrated, it certainly does not have to be. It's actually quite subjective and arbitrary based on individual feelings and understandings of what the definition of life is, and I'd argue that's exactly why SOMA sticks with people the way it does. If there was a definitive answer, I think people would be content with that it is what it is and then move on with their lives.

@@ReanuKeevesAus It follows Arkham Asylum's ending where Joker injected himself with the Titan drug which apparently poisoned him and made him fatally ill. At a certain point in Arkham City's story Joker emerges again with renewed energy, apparently fully cured. But in the end you discover that he's been working with Clayface who has been masquerading as the Joker to sell the story that he's no longer dying. The main clue is that when you use Batman's detective vision (which lets you see everybody through walls, with their skeleton lit up) during the parts where you see the cured Joker you may notice that he doesn't have any bones. If anybody noticed that during their first playthrough then they're likely to chalk it up to a developer oversight/glitch/whatever, but of course this reveals that it's been Clayface all along. Naturally in the end Mr. J succumbs to the poison despite Batman intending to share the antidote with him, and Batman carries his dead body out of the theater.

Prey (2016) had an ending that blew me away completely. It maybe wasn't very original and it wasn't something that has never been done before, but it's so unexpected it caught me offguard. It's also well done and quite well reflects player choices and actions throughout the game

One of my favourites of recent times was RETURNAL. So many questions amid the scant details the game gives you and it makes you think long and hard about what really happened. The Tower kind of helped clear things up, but only a little. Still one of the best in my opinion though.

He’s only a few years older than me so he’s more like a big brother, but I would go visit and we would bake cookies and brownies (I didn’t know he was in his stoner phase lol) then spend all night with him playing and me watching while eating junk food.

Wander paid the price by being Dormin's vessel and he did revive Mono like he said he would. Mono was sacrifice because she was destined to revive Dormin which ironically happened.

MGS2 was a game that absolutely filled me with a sense of existential dread. Campbell's nonesense mixed with the fact that I was playing it at 3 AM just felt so jarring and the fact that you're naked and unarmed inside of a completely unknown environment, taking away any sense of power you built up during the course of the game really solidifies for me just how masterful Kojima is at understanding storytelling.

I think people don't give it enough credit, but Nolan North's as Walker in Spec Ops the line, is one of the best acting I've ever seen in a video game. The way he changes his way he interacts with his team during the game, or the way he screams when Walker starts to losing his mind, it's really amazing.

Assassins Creed: Blackflag. The ending scene: you're at a tavern. A female baladeer sings "The Parting Glass". You look around. At one table, you are visited by the friends you've met along your journey. They're all either dead or in prison, even the woman you loved. Gets you right in the feels. In a thread elsewhere, several of us had the same thoughts concerning losing these friends. I may replay the game someday, but it will be years. The memory of that final scene is still too raw.

Ending of Final Fantasy X had me in tears. Its like you say though, the twists of the story comes midway and towards the end, but the ending seals the deal of the twists. One of them (the summoner having to sacrifice themselves to save the world for a little while) gets reversed, but the other one (Tidus being a dream) does not, so Yuna has to endure the Eternal Calm without the one she loves. So heartbreaking !!

Before even seeing your list of spoilers my immediate thought was of how much the ending of Xenoblade blew my little new-Xeno-fan mind. Same thing happened to me a year later with the latter half of Disc 2 of Xenogears. Just hours of mindblowing storytelling. Spoilers for everything>> 10:08 *Klaus' universe was actually our universe and world, Earth; not Shulk's universe and world. The universe Xenoblade takes place in is the one created by Klaus- the endless sea and boundless sky. And actually the series expanded on it way more than just a little. It retconned a few key details- Shulk's universe now being a pocket dimension- and made it way more like Xenogears' Perfect Works, where before XB1 was initially just a new standalone IP that just happened to be made by Takahashi's team, NOW its a definitive Xeno-verse series of games with Xenoblade 3 being basically as close to a Xenogears remake as we'll get. Xenoblade 2 actually takes place on Earth, Klaus' world. Xenoblade 3 takes place in an "endless" simulation between two real-life seconds- the beginning and ending respectively showing those two seconds that sandwich the entire 1000+ years of Aionios' world. it always sounds so funny explaining it in so few sentences, no-context like this. 1:12 speaking of which, the Whispers sound very... Xenosaga, from what little I yet know of Xenosaga so far. The gnosis, right? Same concept? Im still in the middle of Saga1 so... no spoilers plz

Little Nightmares just leaves you in awe with its ending. It's another game that starts you off not knowing much about what is going on, and ending knowing possibly even less. Additionally, there are these little creatures called gnomes right. So, the "protagonist," Six, progressively gains this unexplained, unquenchable hunger. At the end of each level, she usually finds some kind of food, but at the end of one in particular, a little friendly gnome brings her a sausage, but instead of her taking the sausage, she attacks him and eats him. If you play the DLC levels that has you control a little boy, its ending informs you that you, the little boy, were turned into a gnome by some mysterious power, and were the one to try and bring Six a sausage.

I thought about Star Trek too and I think you're absolutely on point. If I scan somebody then spread his ashes into the winds and reassembly him out of thin air later it's not the same person. In the series they handwave it away by using the same matter as the original but why should that matter.

The true twist reveal of Inside, is when you find out that it was all planned and pretty much predicted by the science lab. And that the blob was actually luring the player to become one with it. I randomly saw a vid explain Inside and it's secrets

Another good one imo is the ending of 2018 God of War. Idk bout everyone else, but finding out Atreus was Loki threw me for a loop while simultaneously answering so many questions based off subtle hints through the game. If anyone did realize he was Loki before the end, they are def smarter than me.

About the Star Trek thing: There is actually a whole episode where that is the case. Ryker teleports, and it created a perfect copy of him with all his memories that was left behind. The problem was when said copy decided to go after the crew, cause he figured the teleporter just malfunctioned and left him stranded while the other Ryker just carried on as normal.

Rain World is a hidden gem of a game that specializes in brutally unforgiving gameplay and an atmosphere unlike any other game I've played. Without spoiling much, the ending flips that on its head and turns the more grounded, atmospheric, and danger-ridden vibe of the game into surrealistic, mind-numbing bliss. No big boss battle, no over-the-top craziness. It certainly blew my mind :D

The one ending that honestly pissed me off was the ending is to the very first Saints Row game, we did all that work and was as basically a sitting duck on a boat with a bomb and it felt like everyone they showed in the final cutscenes knew what the plan was.

Silent Hill 2 is the benchmark for how to do a twist ending. It’s built up through the game and its presentation and the ending is left for you to decide. How much is coping mechanisms and how much is real? It’s such a surreal environment that it’s really hard to say for sure but that’s what makes it so memorable.

The one shock twist in Inside was towards the end. As the boy has spent the entire game avoiding everyone in the facility, it was super creepy to have someone run up behind him… only to run past him! Like, what could this new guy be such a rush for? Then, the boy joins other people as they look into the containment chamber. Some of them regard him briefly, before going back to their work. That one part chilled me, and let me know that we were totally in uncharted territory, both in game and narrative wise.

4:28 Star Trek TNG actually did have an episode on that theme. There was an episode of TNG where they rescue a guy stranded on a planet and it turns out it is Commander Riker, who had been duplicated after a transporter malfunction, leaving one copy to go on living life as normal on the Enterprise, while the other was left stranded on a planet for years.

Totally agree with this list, the only I've not played was the jrpg. I definitely think though that Infamous was my favorite, but Soma was the biggest mind explosion of all for me, maybe in the top 3 best stories I've ever heard, it was life changing, and I got to experience the whole thing doing couch coop (swapping control) over a few days with a friend, truly amazing.

You're wrong about the twist in Xenoblade Chronicles. The experiment opened up other universes. The world from XBC2 is the original Earth. We see this with the Land of Morytha and the Beanstalk, Klaus states as much as well. XBC, however, is in another universe, created by the experiment, that half of Klaus was dragged into, as well as another scientist and one of the Trinity Processors. Alrest was Earth, not the unnamed world with the Mechonis and the Bionis

Was a big fan of the ending of Inscryption. The whole game kind of messes with your head, the little hints at lore are creepy, and then the end comes and it gleefully blows past whatever you thought was going to happen. It felt like reality was falling apart (which, I guess in the context of some of the characters, it actually was).
