The 24-70 is a great lens that I own and love shooting with it and is often my go to lens. It takes amazing portraits. I have not experienced the out of focus issues that you mention.

My issue with the a7iii in Hawaii was a less than optimal rolling shutter. I stepped up to the mound and dumped the a7iii and invested in the a7Siii with the 24-70 GM 2.8. NOW I will be tuning my focus onto the a7iv. Thank you for reminding me of my decisions.

Loveeeeeee my 24-70 gmaster. If love my primes too but sometimes you just really need a zoom especially if you don't know where you're going to be shooting so the ability to do wide and mid tele is so nice!

Fave photos: The ones in the middle of the street. I find that oftentimes a location that's unusual (in this case, as opposed to a fence/curb, etc) can create more unique results. Also, you guys got killer content in 10 minutes. Mahalia was fantastic. I've rented the lens for a few weddings where I second shot (I also shoot primes exclusively) which was interesting. It's pretty heavy (as expected with a fixed focal length zoom), and since I'm just used to zooming with my feet (you touched on that) I sometimes forgot that I could change the focal length on the fly, and when I did, I found that I kept it at that length for probably longer than I should have, or I would physically back up (on the 70mm end) instead of just pulling zoom back to get the shot, resulting in missed shots. Optical quality is pretty solid, though. Bokeh was very pleasing, and focus really wasn't that large of an issue, due to the 2.8 aperture. It suffered a bit indoors, as I had to boost my ISO, but that isn't necessarily the lens's fault. Personally, not for me, and when I shoot my own weddings, I don't plan on using it again. It's also very expensive, which is a bit of a turn off, but for the usability and flexibility it offers, I could see it being worth it for some.

Thank you so much! And yeah I agree, I like using "classic" locations where you ask someone to stand right up against something, but it is fun to try different things too. The lighting in the middle of the road was just too good to pass up! I also experienced that during this photoshoot, while I was looking for different focal lengths to be able to share a bit of everything in this video, I noticed that I ended up shooting at 39mm quite a lot on this day. And yeah, while this is a great lens I just personally prefer using primes, so I tend to gravitate towards enjoying primes more than zooms most of the time.

Those last few shots when you noticed the red flowers on the bush were gorgeous!! I struggle with using zoom lenses too. I’ve only got one in my kit (Nikon shooter) and although it’s old and a bit of a junker, it’s tack sharp. However, I am always using my prime lenses. It’s so much easier to compose when my feet are the zoom motor! haha

Kenny Dimitra get the tamron 28-75 f2.8 a third of the price I believe. Light and handy and the autofocus issues have been fixed which makes the lens amazing. It is just as sharp as the GM which makes it a no brainer!

Just came across your channel as I was looking for reviews on kit lenses. I was undecided on the Sony FE 28-70mm F 3.5/5.6 OSS lens. I decided to purchase it in part after watching your post. It appears to be a good general purpose lens. And for those who know what they are doing (such as yourself), one can do great things with it. As a novice, I have challenges with composition (among other things). In this post, I appreciated that you showed both unedited/edited versions of some of the photographs that you took. Now a question comes to mind - how do you discern that you've "got the shot" in real time during the photoshoot? How can you tell that the photo is "good" but it will become amazing after post processing? Apologies for such a newbie question...

I have such a mixed feelings when it comes to zooms vs. primes. I'm a huge fan of big apertures and I buy primes for that reason. But at the same time, I miss the zoom abiltity so much when I use primes. I feel incomplete when using primes, and I feel the same way when using zooms. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don't think it's responsible to go outside during this time. Photography is not an essential job unfortunately, so it's best to just stay indoors to keep everyone safe. We won't be stuck inside forever, we will be able to go out and shoot soon!
