Because Nikon is at its knees. If it goes on like this then they will be out of business. Technically, their Z Line is so far a bummer. It’s a stupid decision from Nikon also not to open their Z Mount for 3rd party lens manufacturer. Availability of lenses is key for survival. Especially when also the FTZ Adapter is giving only a lousy performance with older F Mount lenses. Stupid Nikon, I have to say.

Although this Sigma lens is the better choice over the Sony G master because it's half the price; kudos to Sony for sharing with third-party vendors how to manufacture a lens without the need for reverse engineering. I went mirrorless about six months ago and the amount of available glass made Sony the easy choice. In addition to a couple G Master lenses, I have a couple Tamron zoom lenses and adapted Sigma 150 to 600mm and I'm amazed how good the quality is on all three of those lenses.

Am quite surprised that the Sigma is lighter than the Sony lens...a few grams but still. Usually the Sigma lens is the heavier lens than the Sony equivalent. Bravo Sigma, bravo!!!

Note for anyone who shoots in harsh weather: The Sigma weather sealing is inferior compared to Sony. I’m currently in Alaska and it’s a battle using the Sigma in the rain, as moisture immediately gets in the lens. Sony on the other hand has held up great!

I just came home from my local camera ship after they replaced my copy of the 24-70 2.8. Sigma claimed they "fixed" the weather sealing issues on units with serials above 55641775. A part of me is very tempted to just sell the Sigma, take the plunge and get a GM.

It's hard to trust and use the 24-70 as a workhorse when people on forums are on their second replacement lens. Perhaps they were extra unlucky but I'd rather get some value out of a new lens and upgrade to a GM.

Thanks Jared. I bought the Sigma. Got mine from Allens Camera in their first shipment. Love the lens for my A7RIV and A9. BTW in Sony Alpha Blog testing (MTF standards) the Sigma was the only one of the three: Sigma 24-70mm, Sony 24-70mmGM and Tamron 28-75mm that could FULLY resolve the 61mp files of the A7RIV. Interesting.

There are often times I want that one-stop faster lens in low light situations. Keeping both lenses, especially at the very reasonable price of the Sigma. Both the Sony 24-105mm f4 and the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 have better overall MTF numbers (both rated as excellent on the A7RIV) , higher than the Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM, (rated very good on the A7RIV) really. (Sony Alpha Blog testing, MTF standards)

Well Canon gives you a choice, you don't need to buy their 28-70 f/2, they also have an incredibly well built 24-70 f/2.8, but for many the 28-70 f/2 saves them buying three primes, and is more convenient.

I'd like to share my experience with this lens. I bought it along with the Sony A7R IVA and I changed it after few days. The reasons I did that are : - quite consistent chromatic aberration - eye AF not very reliable - dust issue inside the lens ( serious problem for a lens that should be at the top) - quite soft on the edges From this review and others I really thought this lens would have been amazing, but unfortunately it was not the case. I'll be waiting for the Sony 24-70 2.8 mark II

Great review. This is why I watch your channel. Yes, there is some technical stuff about the lenses, but unlike most other channels, you test these lenses out. You give comparisons and give your personal thoughts why you like the lenses. I love black and white, it can even have digital noise and still look good. Sometimes it adds to the character of the image. Colour? Yes, bold colours on the spectrum from the purple-blue to the yellows and reds, nice to see. Especially when they are so bold. Great video as always. One thought ( don’t know if others agree). Sigma seems to work well with the Sony’s and Tamron seems to work well with Nikon.

I wonder how it fares it very low light situations. Using an A7iii, I shoot lots of corporate events where it's dim lighting for cocktail hours, and a popular thing now is casino nights. Almost as dark as night club situations. My Tamron 28-75 has trouble grabbing focus at times, and I have never tried the G Master in this setting. If the Sigma works better than the Tamron, I will definitely make the switch.

I am in the same boat. If the Sigma is within $200 of the Sony when I go to buy one of the two in March I will go with the Sony. When the price diff is that small then I would rather get the 1st party lens. When they are $500 or more apart then I will 100% get the third party.

The Sony is 4 years old and second hand still goes for $1,400 (used) - 1,650 (like new) depending on quality. That being said, it seems like a safer option to park your money into as an investment in terms of selling.. but if you’re running the lens into the ground, the Sigma makes more sense from this perspective

At 6 minutes in, the shot was taken at 5,000 ISO. Did you add any grain when processing the image? The noise/grain looks massive and way worse than I would have expected to see. I knot that's not the lens (which looks great) but even so I'm a bit surprised by the grain/noise I see there.

I would like to know this also. I am in the market for a new camera and have been giving the Nikon Z series some thought. But I can't get past the fact that the Z mount just doesn't have the range of lenses it should considering it is their newest tech. Ok, you got me... I was on the hunt for a zoom all-rounder lens for my A7R III and 24-70 2.8 was (for me) ideal. I already have the 20mm 1.8 G lens and it is fantastic. I really don't want to swap my camera with a Nikkor 18-105 anymore. I just wanted a single main camera with two lenses. And the Sony GM was giving me the cute eyes but the price... ugh, the price... And then, this video came up in recommendations. And guess what? I have a brand new Sigma coming my way as we speak!!! Thanks dude! The next beer is on me!!!

i know this is a year old but in short NO the sigma is much bigger on a small body throwing off the weight ratio for anybody that finds this comment & is looking for a decent zoom on APS -C around $1000 or less look into the sony 18-55mm f2.8 , sony 18-105mm f4, tamron 18-200mm f3.5-6.3, specifically the tamron 17-70mm f2.8 VC will be the closest comparable to this lens

Probably a weird question but a min. focus distance of 18cm would be inside the lens since its normally taken from the sensor plane. Sounds like sigmal is providing the number from the front of the lens ?

I just sold my 24-70GM to get the Sigma 24-70and used the extra cash to buy an Aperture light and new CFExpressA card. I wish the Sigma was out back when I purchased the GM!

I read one test that said the Sigma out resolved the GM on the 61mp A7r 4. and another test that said it was sharper than the new Nikon 24/70 f2.8, and new Canon 24/70 f2.8, witch really surprised me after all the talk about Canon and Nikon's bigger lens mounts being better than Sony's smaller one. and the Sigma lens being half the price it really is a no brainer. I wish I could find out how many lenses Nikon actually sold of the 0.95 lens lol, it's cool that you're getting behind the scenes with Burnie, its like watching history being made, and It looks like Burnie Sanders is really drawing in the huge crowds. and now he is leading in the poles. I wonder if he actually has a chance of winning. I never thought I would see the day that you would have a bag full of Sigma glass lol.

Light! Aziz!..More Light!..now that made me chuckle. :) This sure is one badabadaboom lens. Lucky enough to pick one up a month ago and it's sweet! Don't forget that when talking about the zoom range being 'just about enough for a portrait', teamed up with the A7R4 and shooting in cropped mode, you still have 26MP and an effective reach of a little over 100mm

I do not use UV filters, either. But, I do use Clear filters. Some of my Canon L glass is not fully “weather sealed” until you use a protective filter.

Like I said, win/win. They are selling this lens for 4 years already. Professionals who have the money, will buy the native Sony lenses anyway, which also is a little bit better. Sigma pays for the license/maybe a percentage of lens sales. Won’t be that big of a deal for them.

hello, I discussed with sony's users and they explained me that higher price for Sony 24-70 could be explained by three factors : sony uses titanium, more expensive but more robust to shocks than aluminium used by sigma, sony is better tropicalized and because sigma with newer technology is perhaps better than sony for photos but dual motorization of sony makes its 24-70 better for video 4K and its autofocus. what do you think, mainly for video because I have no idea what we need for video on a camera.

the reason why its so popular is because 24-70 is the most important range and there is no 24-70 2.8 for the sony emount other than the super expensive gmaster so literally everyone is looking for a cheaper alternative. i was too but there was nothing available. i ended up getting the gmaster and its absolutely brilliant. but insanely expensive

Love my GMaster too. I chose it over the Tamron (which I tested alongside it) because I need corner-to-corner sharpness for photographing my artwork and the Tamron never could quite get there.
