Best highlight videos of Riggins. Usually all you get is a few runs, his Super Bowl run and a lot of talk about his postseason play. I remember watching Riggins run like that regularly as a high school boy when he was with the Redskins. I would say having the hogs and an offense designed around his running as an older 30 plus back probably didn't make up for what he could have accomplished as a blocking back under Allen and Ewbanks as a younger back.

That was the scary thing about John, not any break away speed and elusive moves, but his ability to pound a defense all day, punishing them. Though he wasn’t a speedster, he had pretty good speed for a guy his size. Usually by the forth quarter, no one in the secondary wanted to see John coming. That’s usually when John would break a big one. Joe Gibbs like to pound a defense and wear them down physically and Riggins gave him the right weapon for the job. Big power backs like John Riggins, Christian Okoye, Larry Csonka, Earl Campbell and Mike Alstott don’t come around any more. Like you said, if the back is pounding out 3.8 yards per carry, you’re going to continue to convert all the way to the end zone. All of those guys were great finishers. They could almost always pound it through any line for the TD. All of those guys often got off to a slow start because they were most effective late in the game, after they had tenderized the defense enough that linebackers and defensive backs would fall down or feign injury just not to take another hit from Riggins, Okoye, Csonka, Campbell or Alstott. Mike Alstott wasn’t quite as big as those other guys, but was just as hard to bring down and was every bit as effective at the goal line. I always felt Tampa never ran him enough? Guys like Riggins, Okoye, Csonka and Campbell were work horses. Riggins would carry the ball 30-35 times a game, just punishing defenses. Besides, it’s harder on linemen to pass block all day, since they are dropping backwards most of the time. When you run your line gets to dish out the punishment to the defensive line and a power back can pound any LB or DB left in the way. I like the old smash-mouth kind of football and kind of miss it. Too many big time QBs want to rack up stats and they can only do that passing, but those games often come down to who has the ball last. Without the ability to control the clock, it’s hard to hold on to a slight lead. Riggo allowed Gibbs to completely own the clock, keeping the ball out of the hands of any dangerous QBs in the last minutes. That’s why Gibbs is a hall of famer and the only coach to ever win three Super Bowls with three different QBs and that accomplishment is larger than it seems to most. It showed that Gibb’s stars were his offensive line and he proved that with a dominating offensive line, you could win with any QB. It’s a lot easier to win multiple Super Bowls when you got lucky in the draft and got a Joe Montana, John Elway or Tom Brady. That’s why Washington never had to pay some ridiculous amount of salary to some Prima Donna QB under Gibbs. Joe could win championships with even Rypien as QB. That’s not something most any other coach could do.
